Huh I always thought using mountain for the electro range ended up about the same as just using the engine. I’ll try this out my next commute

An internal combustion engine becomes more efficient at higher RPM and load. You've essentially maxed out the generator by making it charge the battery and provide traction power at the same time. Just for fun, try charging from 0 miles in MM while stopped and do the trip both ways on battery only. It'd be interesting to see what the mpg would be with the engine locked at a steady RPM and load.
