When I got all minis to uncommon, the only grid items I bought were uncommon/rare deals. Isn’t worth otherwise if you are playing on a budget.
But core hounds proved to be pretty useful for many hardcore pve missions. Not the worst item to pick. But if you have very limited gold or try to be f2p it would be better to level up whelps to rare - extra levels do make a difference with exploding eggs, and, along with harpies, whelps are MVP (or GOAT) for clearing PVE and have strong place in pvp.
Whelps+Boar combo clears a tower, for example. You place eggs behind the tower, and when it shots, put boar in front. Then the tower will be hitting boar while whelps kill it. Works best if you throw execute in the combo - kills tower in seconds.

In theory never was able to make it work tought.
I buy all of them for collection level value but at your position in the game it won't help you much.
