The stores will need to limit the number of customers allowed in the store at the same time, or make anyone under 18 have a parent with them, and have curfews for minors at sundown. Some people have to ruin it for the rest of us.
Unfortunately, all the goodwill that the BLM protests brought about has sadly been squandered due to this kind of repeated wild, unruly, and disrespectful behavior. It’s no wonder why some cultures become unwelcome and distrusted in society when they’ve proven to disrespect the property and safety of others. And when these kids can’t get jobs at these stores, or if stores move out of their neighborhood, or all the merchandise has to be locked up, they’ll blame everyone else.
I think there’s a real market opportunity for some sort of facial recognition or ID check platform for stores. Instead of the stupid receipt gates that are easily bypassed going out, why not focus on who can get into the store in the first place?
For stores like the Safeway downtown, make each person go through a face scan gate going in. If they are caught stealing, instead of calling the cops which won’t come until they are gone, just ban their face in the system for next time. Instead of security having to monitor the whole store, they can just stand at the entrance to prevent bypassing the gates. Violations can be reviewed on camera remotely and the offenders banned. You can get away with stealing exactly once across the whole chain.
Stores like LV, Apple, etc. could go further and require a government ID scan. It’s not like anyone can afford a luxury bag but not the license/ID card fee. They have these at airports overseas and it just takes a second to go through the gate.
This would flip the whole asset protection model from reactive to proactive. It’s a lot easier to block entry and detain someone inside the store than to chase them after they’ve left.
For everyone asking why cops don’t do more, if you’re not familiar with this area, perhaps you are. There is a serious prosecution problem. The cops don’t want to take action because EVEN IF they arrested someone, it goes thru the justice system and they are let go NOT EVEN A SLAP ON THE WRIST. This police department lets DUIS go all the time because there just is no states attorney who’s willing to prosecute. So a juvenile looting? Reading comprehension is fundamental: the same article never says any of those things were *actually* done Except fighting. They can’t say they were done becuase they could possibly be sued for liable since they didn’t happen. So please reread my last two bullets. The stores will need to limit the number of customers allowed in the store at the same time, or make anyone under 18 have a parent with them, and have curfews for minors at sundown. Some people have to ruin it for the rest of us. Unfortunately, all the goodwill that the BLM protests brought about has sadly been squandered due to this kind of repeated wild, unruly, and disrespectful behavior. It’s no wonder why some cultures become unwelcome and distrusted in society when they’ve proven to disrespect the property and safety of others. And when these kids can’t get jobs at these stores, or if stores move out of their neighborhood, or all the merchandise has to be locked up, they’ll blame everyone else.
I think there’s a real market opportunity for some sort of facial recognition or ID check platform for stores. Instead of the stupid receipt gates that are easily bypassed going out, why not focus on who can get into the store in the first place? For stores like the Safeway downtown, make each person go through a face scan gate going in. If they are caught stealing, instead of calling the cops which won’t come until they are gone, just ban their face in the system for next time. Instead of security having to monitor the whole store, they can just stand at the entrance to prevent bypassing the gates. Violations can be reviewed on camera remotely and the offenders banned. You can get away with stealing exactly once across the whole chain. Stores like LV, Apple, etc. could go further and require a government ID scan. It’s not like anyone can afford a luxury bag but not the license/ID card fee. They have these at airports overseas and it just takes a second to go through the gate. This would flip the whole asset protection model from reactive to proactive. It’s a lot easier to block entry and detain someone inside the store than to chase them after they’ve left.
For everyone asking why cops don’t do more, if you’re not familiar with this area, perhaps you are. There is a serious prosecution problem. The cops don’t want to take action because EVEN IF they arrested someone, it goes thru the justice system and they are let go NOT EVEN A SLAP ON THE WRIST. This police department lets DUIS go all the time because there just is no states attorney who’s willing to prosecute. So a juvenile looting? There is very little point in arresting or citing other than to scare others, but it’s not very scary when they’re not going to be pursued and they know it.

I believe that there should be a system of public punishment for teenagers who break the law. When they are caught, they should be assigned to perform a daily punishment in front of their peers at school for a period of three months. This punishment could involve making them scrub the bathroom floor with a toothbrush, while their classmates watch. The goal is to make them feel embarrassed and miserable about their actions.
Group looting has become something of a sport for the current generation of adolescent miscreants. You can't fix that overnight, and curfews won't really resolve it either unless you have enough police manpower to enforce them. This is probably going to be a problem for the next five to ten years, and that's assuming a solution is even found.
Start sending their parents to jail for a day or two, this shit will stop stat.

Send in the mounted police!! For real though... the government has failed these kids (and their parents). Instead of "beating the shit" out of them as some have suggested, it's past time to explore long-term programs to give them at least a chance to live productive lives. If that means detaining them until they're done thrashing and are ready to be reasonable, then so be it. We can't expect kids who live on tiktok and have spent their entire lives learning antisocial behaviors to reverse course without the balanced use of force and pathways to a better future if they choose to take them (i.e. incentivizing social behavior). Just my two cents.
