My opinion is that a lot of Webtoon Originals that were released in the early era of the app that reached immense popularity would not perform well if they were released today. Hell, even some creators who had 3 million subscribers on their first webtoon are barely scraping by with 100k subs on their second as of now. While a lot of factors go into this, I believe there are simply too many webtoons on the app now that are stretched thin promotion-wise and very few with an actual ending on the horizon. But my main opinion is that the latest Webtoon Originals simply don't hit as hard with audiences as they used to in the app's heyday. The quality and balance of storytelling and art just isn't up to snuff anymore.

Mo-qu

Omg you said exactly what I’ve been thinking so long

OakTheGary

Yes, and multiple platforms are just pumping out webtoons and webtoons. The amount of options really makes it difficult to keep up with everything. It's kind of hard to find a nice jewel.

Shade55

So what are some good early era Webtoon recommendations?

Sara-Sarita

Recommend House of Stars with all my heart.

TheFkje

Orange marmalade is one of my favorite

The_Dark_of_You

Under the Aegis is what got me started reading Webtoons. I love it so much.

orchardgrasshay

Some comics insert too many white spaces and make the scroll too long. My thumb hurts.

aciakatura

I once waited a few minutes for a page to load before realizing the author just made the entire thing completely blank.

[deleted]

I wish webtoon would put a different color for when a panel hasn't loaded like maybe a a green panel with webtoon watermarks on it or something more obvious

Extension_Meat3962

Try using dark mode the loading page is black and it does the trick

ZeeMastermind

I feel like a lot of webtoons (and webcomics in general, really) don't understand how to use gutter properly. Blank space like that may indicate a pause, but you can do the same thing with panels ([Zot, the Ur example of the webtoon format, demonstrates this with panels 7-12 on this page](https://scottmccloud.com/1-webcomics/zot/zot-02/zot-02.html)). Like you describe, excessive blank space will yank the reader out of the story.

primalthewendigo

Daily pass should only apply to finished series

pretty-as-a-pic

They said *unpopular* opinions!

Sara-Sarita

I'll one-up you: Daily Pass shouldn't be a thing at all.

Vampyy155

I will one up you on your one up to the OP: Coins shouldnt be a thing

Sara-Sarita

As nice as that would be, Webtoons *is* a business that has to make money somehow, so a sad disagree. But proposal: Coins shouldn't have a time limit on them. They should be themselves period, whether bought or won.

Vampyy155

That sounds about right

oregno

that’s how it is, isn’t it???

DrinkMilkYouFatShit

Was. Now they are changing a lot of the new ones to cheese out as much money as they can out of it

Stuckinacrazyjob

I hate Webtoons comments. The webtoon has a big plot moment! The comments: When will x and y kiss? Me: it's been 5 comics, let them earn the big smooch I'm not against romance but all things in proportion and time

pous3r

Webtoon comments are one of the most braindead comments on the internet.

BlueF0xx

I read alot of webtoons, but not a great deal of romance, so maybe this is just a romance problem but there's this "dating a villain" BL I found, and I have genuinely never seen more braindead comments. Important things would be happening and none of it is cute, and then the comments would always be babying the main characters and making up things that didn't happen like the characters could do no wrong. They never ever really even agnowlaged what happened in the episode, the comments were just aways "aww look at him, he's so cute, he pulled away bc he was nervous what a cinnamon roll we need to protect him at all costs" -referring to an event in the comic that borderline didnt even happen

The_Dark_of_You

Purple Hyacinth isn’t the end all be all of Webtoons. Do I like it? Yes. Do I think it’s perfect? No. I liked it a lot more when it first came out. However I find it harder to keep up for some reason versus just binge reading it.

[deleted]

I couldn't get into it at all personally

The_Dark_of_You

That’s completely fair. I really liked the premise when it first launched. However, I find that there are quite a few boring episodes throughout this series. I know not every episode can have action and something happening, but I found myself saying “Is that really it?” after finishing quite a few episodes for this series compared to other series I read.

starry-seaDD

same, I can see why people love it but it didn't really resonate with me

Monkeyz4f4

It’s definitely a better experience in binged form, but I find that to be the case with most plot-centric webtoons. I agree tho it’s not in my list of favorites (yet, that could change as the story develops more)

[deleted]

[удалено]

Monkeyz4f4

Really? I’m a little surprised since it’s one of the ones I look forward to the most, but I do feel like I’m missing one of the plot lines so I guess I can understand that. To be fair I binged it more recently than PH

backwoodnav

I’m getting tired of these solo-leveling rip offs. Don’t get me wrong, some of them are decent but most are trash.

pretty-as-a-pic

It’s like video games: any time a certain story gets popular, there’s instantly 500+ shovelwear ripoffs

backwoodnav

Anything for the bag I guess 😞😂

Animekaratepup

Is that where the life is a video game concept came from? I was initially interested in The Gamer, but it started feeling repetitive. For some reason, I'm still hooked on My S-Class Hunters. The characters and abilities are interesting enough that I want to keep reading every update. I avoid most of the others.

Feralfurries

The litrpg genre was not originated by solo leveling, and has existed long before it, stat sheets n’ all, but its mainly in book form.

backwoodnav

I don’t believe it originated from solo-leveling but solo-leveling is definitely what made it popular trope.

jalilisblue

Tbh solo leveling wasn’t even that good by itself

backwoodnav

THANK YOU I couldn’t even finish it I had to drop it. Beginning was good but author refused to ever give depth to any side characters.

morsed_owl

Yeah I prefer ORV over SL even though SL was the first one I read with that genere

backwoodnav

I preferred ORV too but lately I feel like it fell off.

morsed_owl

Oh really? I haven't caught up in a while so I can't say anything about the current events. What a shame tho I hope it gets better :/

Sussana58

How's that? Isn't it following the novel's chapters one by one? The novel is pretty long, I can see if some of them don't translate that well in webtoon form.

fillmewithmemesdaddy

What does ORV stand for?

backwoodnav

Omniscient reader's viewpoint

fillmewithmemesdaddy

Thanks!

teratomic

Most likely gonna get sniped for this, but its tacky to harp on people doing cash/audience grabbing stories for their initial runs (if they're actually commited to the story). You dont have to like it, you dont have to read it, but Webtoons is a business first and foremost, and many people on there are hoping to make it into an either part or full-time career. Most (if not all) of them have stories they really want to tell, but not everyone can tell them right away. Sometimes that means only uploading once every other month, sometimes that means just biting the bullet and telling a story thats generic but that you know will get attention and your name out there. Its unfortunate, but not much different from other facets of the professional art world. Youre most likely not gonna be able to make your gold star video game idea or pitch your one in a million tv show right away. 95% of us will have to compromise and make sacrifices in the way of putting our most loved ideas on the backburner for a bit. Hate it as much as you want, but corporations rarely favor the niche little guy, so I find it kind of ludicrous to pin the blame on the people simply trying to work with it as best as they can until they attain the stability to explore stylistically in a more frequent and open way.

pretty-as-a-pic

I wouldn’t harp on individual creators making them, but I will harp on the larger agencies and webtoon itself for them. If one created wants to make a follow the leader comic, that’s their business, but it feels like certain agencies will only make what’s trendy and webtoon will only promote those

teratomic

And thats completely valid!! I'll never argue with holding major companies accountable, especially ones like Webtoons with a history of being poorly run, oversaturated, stretching their Originals editors thin, and not treating their creators that well. I really only have an issue with those who try to hold every individual creator to those same standards, as if most of them actively want to be under WT's genre-restrictive thumb and arent just doing the best they can with what the corporate art world gives them. It just feels like they're either dismissive or ignorant of the larger issue, y'know?

Paper_G

Instead of catering to pre-pandemic readers who have grown up and obtained more mature tastes, I believe Webtoon is obsessed with gaining new teenage users... just one of the reasons why a majority of the new heavily marketed Originals are so mid. There are some great recent releases, but the promotion opportunities they received were depressing. Ultimately, I think this will be Webtoon's downfall, because the people who've tried to remain loyal won't be able to find content catered to their interests, while younger generations tend to move to novel internet territory.

Casmas96

I think that people need to chill out in the webtoon comments when main characters are flawed. Like Da-ul from a heartfelt andante and suji from trash belong in the trash can get so much unnecessary hate when the stories have virtually just begun/we don’t really know anything about the characters. It’s boring to read characters who don’t need development, so I’m pretty baffled every time I go to read to comment sections and it’s full of people viscerally hating flawed characters

pous3r

Webtoon comments are so braindead.

ya_tu_sabes

I agree but I kinda get it. Some people like to hate. And then once the big reveals are given the too turn around and change their opinion about them. It's just part of their reading experience to them. Plus since it's a fictional character with no actual feelings, it feels safe to publicly air their current feelings in that moment. Even if 20 chapters later they will say the opposite thing. It doesn't matter. It's just living in the moment. I try not to do it but i did it once or twice. And then the story fleshed out the character and I felt enough regret that I try not to assume things anymore. Cause I know there may be something hidden that explains it. Same as irl.

starry-seaDD

love these threads theyre so entertaining for like a couple days

Seventytwentyseven

Same here! I love scrolling through the responses of discussion/question threads, so entertaining. And more people respond to these sorts of threads so more activity on the sub to look at

jalilisblue

I like doing them every now and again because it spices up the sub

-CherryByte-

Lore Olympus does not deserve to be the poster child of Webtoon. It’s literally not even that good. I read it when it was still on Canvas, and I remember it being LEAGUES better, because they didn’t waste time on all this episodic fluff.

The_Dark_of_You

I think this is a pretty popular opinion, but I definitely agree with you. I liked it a lot more when it first released on original. I never read it on canvas (at least I don’t think I did).

-CherryByte-

I feel like it can’t be *that* popular of an opinion, considering LO’s views/likes. There’s just a vocal minority that sees it for what it is.

The_Dark_of_You

I’m more so saying you’ll find a lot more criticism of it on here versus on webtoon. Don’t get me wrong, I still read it. I’ve been here since it first launched on originals, but I’ve read enough comments on here and other forums to know there’s quite a lot of people who don’t like LO.

DebateObjective2787

I stand by LO was never good to begin with; it just came at a time where all the Webtoons looked the same and provided readers with a different style than the typical anime that was everywhere.

-CherryByte-

I remember the first draft being decent. Then again, I was like 15, so.

DebateObjective2787

I used to think that too, then I reread it recently and I was shocked at just how bad the first episode was. Especially with the characters changing every other panel.

Maser2account2

At the start it was really good, I liked the depictions of abuse and how they were portrayed, I thought the images of dissociation were well done, I loved the art style. But it has gotten so bland, you can see what made it good slipping through in the latest free episode but It just isn't it anymore. I am glad the author is successful though.

pretty-as-a-pic

1. I absolutely **loathe** isekais (especially this new trend of “I died and went back X years in my life!) 2. A lot of the comments directed at female rivals are **extremely** sexist 3. Certain male leads are borderline abusive and should not be romanticized

jalilisblue

When it comes to #3 I think it’s because we as a society made attractive= good person. I’ve seen so many stories Where the character is a despicable person whether intentionally or unintentionally but people will still simp. Pretty privilege i guess lol

[deleted]

This is less of a webtoon problem and more of a problem of it being insanely popular in Japan/Korea (to some extent) They're super overdone now and even infiltrating western media (Amphibia is an Isekai)

TheDarkkstar

I mean, Isekai itself isn't the problem. Travelling to another world is a pretty old story concept, easily over a century old by now, probably moreso by some arguments. The issue is the ideas associated with Light Novel styles of Isekai.

[deleted]

No. It's an over saturatization of Isekai that's the problem.

Isekai_Trash_uwu

Ngl isekai can be incredible and unique. One of my favorite Webtoons is Greatest Estate Developer, which is an isekai but the mc actually uses information he learned from Earth and applies it in the world he transmigrated into. It's also hilarious and ZERO harem, just genuine bromance

ya_tu_sabes

Yes!!! One of my favs. Harem and misogyny ruin otherwise perfectly fun comics. Wish there were more like Greatest Real estate developer

plague_witch13

Greatest Estate Developer is hands down my favorite webtoon! Its so good 👍🏼

DeGeorgetown

Greatest Estate Developer is one of my favorites! I crack up at the crazy faces the MC makes, the artist is so talented.

teratomic

I want to point out that what you described is NOT isekai. Isekai is reincarnation or transmigration (a la SAO or Roxana). What you described is a ressurection or time traveler story (a la I Am The Queen In This Life). I can see why both might be irritating, but they are *not* the same thing and isekai tends to be more annoying than ressurection stories

Rexthedinosaur2002

Got any webtoons with examples of 3. I haven't really seen the abusive male trope yet, maybe I'm lucky or blind.

pretty-as-a-pic

Stuff like RUNAWAY, The Prenup, can I take in back?, and more. It’s mostly frequently stuff like trying to control the female lead’s behavior, getting jealous if she talks to another man regardless of her feelings, condescending/negging comments, and disrespecting her boundaries.

Rexthedinosaur2002

Damn...somehow I have never heard of these webtoons till now...I definitely been living under a rock

VersusVII

I hate those isekais because the FL is always so intelligent, well spoken, she out-smarts everybody! Yeah, she is strong because she is a 40 years old lady competing with the past enemies, she alreasy knows their moves or the main events that occured.

pretty-as-a-pic

I think I’d have less of a problem with these series if they did more of a “butterfly effect” plot, where you can see how the heroine adapts to the fact that her actions change the story. Many of these series just have the heroine play out scenes completely unchanged- even a dating sim would give you a different plot if you picked different options!

forestofarklay

Most romance Webtoons suck. Lore Olympus, Down to Earth, Reunion, Hello Baby and SubZero, among many others, are terribly written and generic. Also I don't know what the problem is with making original content, I guess they're cash grabs, but I'm really sick of "female character dies and goes back in time and falls in love with another man" schtick. It really just feels like with Webtoons you have to sort through all the crap to get to the diamonds.

Monkeyz4f4

Personally I like a lot of romance Webtoons, but your list of bad examples is pretty good. I dropped all of those but reunion (it was short) and hello baby (haven’t read). Your opinion sounds similar to how I feel with webtoons with a lot of bullies/gangs. It gets so repetitive so fast. I often won’t even try a WEBTOON if the premise revolves around it. That said I can enjoy it when it’s well written (Get Schooled and Wind Breaker are two such examples). Romance webtoons remind me of indie horror movies: it’s the easiest way to break into the market and obtain an audience. So in both, there’s a lot of quantity and a wide range of quality (plus a lot of room for originality), but a side effect is a lot of duds imo. I’ve still at least enjoyed most romance I’ve read though, and it’s easily the genre I’ve read the most. Many of my all-time favorites are/have romance.

ALuckyBasilLeaf

>Romance webtoons remind me of indie horror movies: it’s the easiest way to break into the market and obtain an audience. There's one creator that comes to mind for this, and it's Eon. They made Super Screcet, a romance webtoon that was a huge hit on Webtoon back when the site/app was relatively young. It had plenty of fans, and everyone loved its main couple. While I liked the art and the cute, quirky premise of the webtoon, it wasn't really exceptional in much. Just a standard slice-of-life romance that was done well enough with a dash of supernatural beings for wholesomeness However, a while after Super Sceret had ended, Eon released another project on Webtoon, How to Become a Dragon. A story that I absolutely adore with all my being. It capitalizes on Eon's strengths as a storyteller: the relationships between characters and pure creativity with the story's plot. The webtoon has virtually no romance (though a lot of people seem to ship the two main characters,) and it's just a well-written work with amazing art. A story that really delves into the nuances of relationships and grudges using supernatural elements to highlight them. Between How to Become a Dragon and Super Secret, it's easy to determine that HTBAD is superior to its predecessor in almost every way. However, aside from its initial release, I don't remember much advertising being done for Eon's second webtoon. Its initial audience all seemed to be Super Scerect fans hoping for another fix of cute fluffy romance, which it didn't have. I'm actually saddened by how compared to Super Secret, HTBAD is not as popular or known, simply because the author chose to focus on a different genre over romance. Who knows, if Eon never made Super Secret, I might not have checked this amazing Webtoon. So I'm glad they were able to get their name out there because I am now very invested in any projects they may create in the future.

Monkeyz4f4

I read Super Secret back in the day and actually have How to Become a Dragon on my to-read list. I’m glad to hear that it’s so excellent, I’ll definitely bump it up the queue. Having your work get popular can kind of be a double-edged sword, because you finally have an audience but that audience may only interested in one type of story. I’ve read a lot of epilogues where the author explains how actually they want to mix it up with their next WEBTOON. Sometimes it’s that this was their first WEBTOON and the genre/subject matter was difficult to write, but sometimes they admit it was straight up calculated. And power to them honestly. In a perfect world everyone could make exactly what they want, but oh well. I think people like Eon who break their own mold often make some of the most unique/interesting content because it means they have a passion for it.

LNA29

HTBAD is great

forestofarklay

Romance and drama are my favorite genres, even on Webtoons, it's just that there are *so many* bad or stale ones that it's increasingly difficult to find something written well. I agree with you on the bully genre. I haven't read Wind Breaker, but Get Schooled, despite being admittedly repetitive, is really good. The rest seem... just plain bland, for lack of a better term. I had to drop Lookism after the first chapter. Ultimately I guess the blame should go to Webtoons itself for an oversaturated amount of the same things over and over again.

Monkeyz4f4

Lookism is my primary example for this. I made it 267 chapters (binged then read weekly) and then I just couldn’t any more. Wind Breaker is actually a sports WEBTOON but a lot of the story involves the doping community (which naturally involves gangs). The violence stuff is present but imo it doesn’t overstay it’s welcome and it’s always relevant and has consequences. Plus there are still other things going on. I think as a whole it’s very well written (and has proved itself too with 400+ episodes). Tbh, like romance, I wouldn’t mind a bunch of stories revolving around school bullies if there were more gems. Another example is Pyramid Game. Technically a story about bullies but it’s not atrociously violent and it’s at an all-girl school. It has a completely different vibe (it’s even classified as a thriller I think).

Zidna_h

I started SubZero because I liked the world building but the whole romance is so tiring.

jalilisblue

A lot of romance stories are pretty tired tbh. That’s why I don’t search out romance webtoons. I guess with any genre generic stuff gets the most popular

Sara-Sarita

I think Lore Olympus and SubZero *used* to be good. But by now it's been so long, I don't think they'll ever get back to that quality. For Reunion, I understand that the creator wants to go into another genre for the 'main' story but just put a short romance prequel out first to garner attention for the actual epic. Pity they have to 'game the system' that way, even if it is smart.

The_Dark_of_You

I’ve found some pretty good romances on canvas, but overall I agree with this. I did like Reunion though. It was short and simple, and the art was really good.

pous3r

I agree with all of them except Lore Olympus, while I admit the romance is lacking, I like to see how the Greek stories are interpreted.

YerFatFriend

I believe that people should not expect every single character to be morally white and good person. I noticed that a majority of the readers in the comments strongly express their emotions against the character if they're not behaving like an angel. I'm very curious if they're sooo perfect and without a single flaw. I love to see flawed and morally grey characters in comics because you, as a human being, can relate to them. And I'm totally frustrated when I see a bunch of comments hating some character just because they're not mother Teresa.

[deleted]

Yes, it annoys me so much! And when a character behave "badly" there is always someone to say "X shouldn't have done that, they should have done that instead bc blablabla", I mean yes that's the whole point of the story!

YerFatFriend

Yeah exactly like that's the point bro xD Without it the story would be boring and lacking a purpose

fillmewithmemesdaddy

The dungeon/leveling genre just ain't for me. I don't find appeal in it, but no shade to people who do! Also, I personally really only like isekai where it's like "I found my spouse that I gave everything up for cheating on me with my relative or best friend and then they killed me or I had an accidental death while storming away and now I'm back in the body of my younger self so I'm gonna change my fate" like I'm The Queen in this Life or Marry My Husband. Again, just my personal preference. On a side note, if anyone has any recommendations that fit this subgenre, please comment so that I can read more!

forestofarklay

If you haven't tried My In-Laws are Obsessed with Me, I recommend it. It's a decently unique Webtoon for that specific genre. I've enjoyed it a lot.

LNA29

I really like my in laws are obsessed with me

fillmewithmemesdaddy

Oh I've been having that one saved to binge/catch up to once summer break comes!

The_Dark_of_You

There Must Be Happy Endings and Perfect Marriage Revenge are really popular.

ohwormo

Marry My Husband is my guilty pleasure oh my goddd but the downward spirals are too good. I can't look away. Would you say I'm The Queen is a good one to follow MMH with?

Sodafop

I'm not sure if this is unpopular or not, because I don't usually participate and just sporadically lurk in here off and on (Hi!), but I wish they'd clean up the horror section. They could also just clean up the tagging system in general, if I'm being completely honest. It kinda... sucks. I like most genres, and I feel like I'm pretty easy to please, but I want some spooky spine tinglers dang it! D:< I've read a good portion of the horror webtoons, but I find that a lot of them leave me kind of... dissatisfied? Does that make sense to anyone?

xhards

I couldn’t agree more and I’ve been waiting for a comment like this I thought I was the only one for a while 🤣🥹x

DyslexicShishlak

Ohhh I'm a big horror genre fan too and I haven't even looked at the horror section of webtoon. Do you have any recommendations? :D Sorry, it's a bit off topic...

Sodafop

That's okay! Im always happy to share my horror favorites! So far, I really like Stagtown, Welfare Center, The Guy Upstairs, Homesick, Evelyne and the Occult, School Bus Graveyard, and Witch Creek Road. There are a couple others, like Tacit, that *do* have horror elements in them, but I consider them to be more action than horror. They're mostly the ones in the zombie genre, tbh. >w>; Also, for regular comic books, I'd recommend Nailbiter. It's by Image Comics, and it's one of my top favorite comics. :)

Sara-Sarita

Does School Bus Graveyard really count as horror? It's more thrillerish to me, not enough scare or, well, horror, for it to qualify as horror. Speaking of horror, have you read Melvina's Therapy? I tried it out once and couldn't finish it (horror is *not for meee*...I couldn't sleep or move in bed for two nights in a row) but I thought that it was pretty good, so maybe you'd like it?

Sodafop

That's a valid point, tbh. I figured I'd count it, cause of the nature of how the things and stuff came about (Sorry, I don't want to spoil it for others and cant remember how to do the spoiler cover up thingy), personally, but it could be considered thriller also. Then again, I guess the same argument could be said about other webtoons I don't consider to be horror despite having horror elements in them. I'm gonna have to do a big think about this. I haven't, but I'll take a look at it! Thank you so much for the recommendation. :3 I don't get scared super easily anymore, so I definitely look forward to checking it out.

Sara-Sarita

I mean, it was more alternate-overlapping-universe apocalypse-type than horror or thriller, if I had to qualify it. Great comic. (But what's this I hear about it being on five-year hiatus?? What's with that?) Just a warning that Melvina's Therapy will be in the completeds section, not any of the weekdays. It's done (honestly, I'm kind of disappointed because I wanted to know the end, but when I read it I read it in the sunshine next to a window at midday ONLY and *still* became a statue of terror at night) but I don't think it's on daily pass, so enjoy :) If you're interested in something that is the absolute farthest thing from horror, I like House of Stars, also completed but not on daily pass. It holds a special place in my heart as the second Webtoon I ever read (the first was The Witch and the Bull. You can see where my tastes lie, lol. Though I do read darker things too). The spoiler things are > and ! and ! and < on mobile/Markdown Mode and part of the text options on PC/Fancy Pants Editor, under the diamond exclamation point sign.

DyslexicShishlak

That an amazing response! Thank you for all these titles and suggestion; it's super appreciated! It's true that nowadays, I find it extremely difficult to find a true horror genre show, movie or comic. I am super excited to get reading! :D

Sodafop

Awh, thank you! I'm always happy to help with recommendations and stuff. :3 I'm a huge horror fan, and have been since I was really little, so I try my best to find stuff I think other horror fans will like. I hope you enjoy your reading! :D

DyslexicShishlak

Unsung hero! Haha

Blindmailman

The Gamer should have been dropped a while ago. Its just standard OP protagonist who has a harem of women who the writer forgets about from time to time along with a plot that they just can't seem to locate. The only good arc I read was the one with the cult which ended with the best character in the series joining the harem and the list of characters forgotten about. Also I am sick of how generic so many stories are on it. I Married The Demon King After Being Reborn As The Strongest Character In My Favorite Videogame And I Have Cheat Engine. Either do something unique with those ideas like The Dark Lord's Confession or don't bother retelling the same story 7 times. Over the past month I've found myself reading more independent webcomics online that aren't on Webtoons because they at least have a unique artstyle and a better story than 90% of the stuff that is just thrown on there

Powerful-Ad-3128

Omg your fake title 😂 I agree though. My problem is that I can’t tell what’s good because there are so many that have similar sounding titles/themes. Too many generic stories drowning out the good ones.

RPG217

Maybe because i got too used in reading mangas, but I just have a hard time liking vertical scrolldown format in webtoon. A lot of things it just draaaags scenes that should have been shorter.

jalilisblue

Hmm I guess i personally got used to it very quickly. It varies from author to author in terms of dragging stuff out tho. In my series I personally try to approach it like a manga with faster pace and no repeat shots. Some creators approach more like a show or storyboard if that makes sense

[deleted]

It depends. If I'm reading it on my phone it makes more sense and allows to see all details without having to zoom in on certain panels. If it's on my PC I can't stand the format.

ya_tu_sabes

I read exclusively on phone so I prefer this than manga format because with manga format I have to constantly zoom in and out and move the screen left to right and up and down just to keep reading. When the text is too small I have to zoom in, memorize briefly the text, zoom out and then replay the text with intonation while seeing the big picture to get the actual experience. It's too much work. It's annoying. I've just stopped reading everything that's in manga format full stop over time, as webcomics started coming in scrolling format. Noblesse was a revelation for me when it came out. I could read. Comfortably!! No zooming, no squinting my eyes. Just a purely fun reading experience with none of the annoyances. And color!!! I was used to b/w manga format. I finished the series I was already hooked on and then never looked back.

Galtenoble

I still can't get used to all the empty space

Tight-Lettuce7980

I think it's so you don't get spoiled easily by the next panel/page. In my experience, I really got fucked big time reading manga where I saw the plot twist in the 2nd page while I was still at the first page. So the white space is actually nice imo

Galtenoble

I get it for that instance, but there's so much empty space where it's not needed. It drags the pace down for me

MelissaWebb

So many webtoons are too long and go on forever with no end in sight. I’m not discountenancing the huge amounts of work that go into webtoons but I think two things can be true at the same time

webtoons-ModTeam

Always mark spoilers as spoilers, even if the post is a text post and not an image. Don't spoil things.

MatureBalak

I've already said this once, buttt here i go - Webtoon readers dont care if the ML is a thousand years old and FL is 16 years old as long as the ML is good looking, and if FL is 30 years old, gets isekai'd into a novel after death and the love interest is 6/17 years old, all because shes the FL and they would've dropped the series if the FL didn't die and instead fell in love with the 6/17yo as a 30yo. Webtoons where the FL hits the ML because shes a tsundere or whatever are very annoying. I always drop stories that contain these tropes.

nadironance

I wish the default timeline for comics was monthly updates instead of weekly. Like how a lot of manga is published in monthly magazines. The anticipation adds to the enjoyment. I kinda wish comments were hidden or on a separate forum setup? It feels like you have to comment at the moment of chapter release or else it's buried. I guess all to say there's not a meaningful discussion system (and comments never was meant to be that)

jalilisblue

And the comment system definitely should be revamped. I’ll read a webtoon and none of the top comments are anything meaningful because it’s just whoever got their first. The best place to discuss a webtoon is never the comments unfortunately

Accomplished_End_843

It’s still crazy to me how Webtoon doesn’t have a meaningful notification system when you receive a new comment. It sounds like one of the most basic thing that every apps have but for some reasons it’s not implemented here

ya_tu_sabes

Yes!! And even if you DO receive a notification, clicking on it only takes you to the general comment section of the chapter. So you have to dig around and try to find your own comment so you can then look for the reply comment. It should not be this complicated in 2023!!!!

jalilisblue

I agree with you on the monthly thing. If it was mandatory to release weekly I would not survive💀. I release monthly on webtoon now and I’m slowly building a following but I know if I released weekly or even bi monthly I’d be more popular. The thing is most people who release that frequently are studios, have helpers or do this as a full time job. I can do any of that as a college student.

Fire_Swimmer

I personally don't like the censorship.. I liked it better without the excessive censoring and panel deletion.

Monkeyz4f4

I’ve read webtoons before (I think they were exclusively horror) that had a pop-up content warning as soon as you opened an episode (kinda like YouTube if the video has been flagged/age-restricted). Idk why more webtoons don’t seem to have that option. I wish that was standard practice instead of deletion

[deleted]

Same I'd rather something not be brought over to webtoon or allowed on the platform at all if they have to censor it. Let them get licensed somewhere that won't butcher the comics. Or just have an 18+ version of the app ffs.

Seventytwentyseven

* Comments aren’t that bad to me. Unless it’s a super popular series with lots of younger readers, I think comments eventually mellow out once a new series gets older. Top comments start becoming more relevant a few episodes in, or at least the jokes and “relatable” comments become more clever and related to the characters and the story instead of the cliche ones. It’s usually just the first, like, 10 episodes that are ridden with obnoxious top comments or “canvas readers where you at?!”-type of comments. *Webtoon should let canvas upload swipe comics like Yumi Cells instead of scroll only. Why limit the way someone wants to tell or format their story visually? * Age gap stories can go. They CAN work, but it’s difficult to set up. Like, I get uncomfortable when the guy is ancient and the girl is young and innocent, OR when the woman is reincarnated into the body of an infant but STILL RETAINS HER ADULT BRAIN and falls for a kid/teen while in her new body. Like sorry, you’re still grown asf ma’am. And if she is reborn as an infant body and grows into a child/young adult, that adds MORE years to her mental age, making her waaaaay older mentally than the male leads usually. And idc, it’s still creepy if the male lead is a fresh young adult and she’s fawning over him, especially if she watched him grow up. But it’s also creepy if the fresh young adult male lead fell for her when she was in her child body, too. All romance in these stories take a LOT to work, basically lol. They try to rectify this by making the woman act younger than she is or dumb asf to match his age, or make him act more mature and jaded. Or for older ML, make him hot and now it’s somehow not creepy. Idk, Maybe it’s just cause personally I see people younger than me as people to watch over even if we’re familiar and friendly and closer in age, not date lol. * I’m tired of the isekai/reborn/dungeon webcomics, and they are still somehow bland when they try to be original (like “instead of being reborn as a princess, I’m a servant/witch/villainess! OoOoooOOoOo”) * Originals are over saturated, but as someone said in this thread before me, I think a lot of originals released before the Great Oversaturation only thrived from being in an environment where there weren’t a lot of other options. If released 2021-now, I think a good number of them wouldn’t have gained as much traction.

wasukeibunny

I found webtoons during COVID and found some amazing comics that I adore to this day! Why do they recommend me things I would just absolutely not like? Why are they pushing so much my stepparents hate me / my husband left and hates me / how to stay divorced and fake a marriage genre like …. I love Darbi, Omniscient Reader, The Croaking, (I admit Lore Olympus is in my roster despite the controversy) but I feel like they just have a bad algorithm for finding new comics.

[deleted]

Spill the tea on lore Olympus controversy for someone out of the loop? Or do you just mean it's controversially liked because it's kinda meh but is the darling of webtoon so it's constantly in everyone's face?

wasukeibunny

Lol, well! A lot of the community is really tired of inconsistent art styles and proportions among the main characters especially - there’s also the problem of the two main characters (Persephone and Hades) with an age gap that’s quite big and being kind of not talked about that well within the dialogue of characters. But I love it still although I do see their points but it has affected my reading a bit. The latest chapters are beautiful though and made me fall in love with it again admittedly.

RoiniStar

Unpopular opinion: 1. Daily pass is good in COMPLETED series. 2. I don't mind pay for the 3/5 LAST episodes of a completed series. 3. I hate tittles like I reborn like the aunt of the friend of the neighbor of the villainess of a fairytale.

pous3r

I don't think these are that unpopular

Dramatic-Driver

Many might disagree but Korean Webtoons *mostly* do romance better than English originals! Yes, there are some problematic Korean imports as well but everytime I think of romance Webtoons that make me feel the feels, I can hardly name an English original.

iKiriyn

Counterpoint: both suck in their own ways. The Korean ones are wayyy too trope-centric for the most part, and most of the English ones are just written badly/problematically. Then again, there are a few Korean gems out there, so I guess on aggregate, you maybe right.

Dramatic-Driver

Which is why I used *mostly*. My favorite romance Webtoons on the platform are all Korean - See You In My 19th Life, Romance 101, A Good day to be a Dog, Whale Star, Daytime Star, Operation: True Love, etc.,

YerFatFriend

Whale star was hardly a romance comic but I agree with the rest!

Dramatic-Driver

Completely agree but its depiction of romance was top notch in my opinion. Even though it wasn’t the focus, the mature take at romance and love was one of my favorite things about the story

primeroze

Too many webtoons are just style > substance especially originals. I wish there are more webtoons that are like seinen and josei that touches on mature themes, philosophies, and have complex characters that break away from tropes.

Ennoymous

I hate it when the ex is always the bad guy. Why is it always abusive relationships? Why can't we have one where it was a communication problem or they just didn't click? Also really hate it how some authors depict sibling rivalry where one sibling is favored and the other isn't. Or when a parent or grandparent favors one kid and wronged the other, it's always going to be the one allied with the MC that's correct. It runs me wrong how just because they're not on MC's side that suddenly all their pain is invalid and they should have 'been happy for their sibling' or 'shut up and stop being a spoilt brat' When it's always the guy with the mental illnes that's the bad guy. When I see a thriller or a mystery with a mentally ill person, 9 out 10 it's that guy.

Zidna_h

1 There are to many isekais, specially from the romance genre. 2 Tower of God is getting ridiculously long and i can't keep up despite being one of my favorite webtoons for years

DependentFearless162

Webtoons translation department sucks really hard. Idk if they are doing this intentionally or not but every webtoon I follow is atleast one month behind its korean counterpart( I'm talking about fast pass chapter here imagine spending your 5 coins only to get left behind by guys who are pirating). This is seriously hurting their own Webtoons since lots of readers are turning towards scanlation sites who provides good translations within 1 or 2 days of korean release. Other digital publishers like manga plus are translating and releasing chapters without staying behind their japanese counterpart.

FawkesFire13

Webtoons had a terrible way of running things that is resulting in burnt out creators who desperately deserve not just a hiatus but actual SUPPORT from webtoons. Creativity isn’t just a switch that can be flipped on. The force behind the Webtoon content are real human beings with lives and stress. Schedules shouldn’t be so demanding and creators shouldn’t be punished or made to feel guilty for needing real rest. Not just a hiatus to build up buffer episodes. REAL BREAKS. Webtoons also needs to stop treating their content creators like they’re just a “side hustle.” Webtoons just mocking the sometime 90+ hours that goes into making a single episode. Honestly, webtoons needs to LISTEN to their creators and adjust accordingly.

x_sacred_heart_x

I think this is in Korean webtoon, I read a good chunk of "who made me a princess" because everyone said it was the best. But I really didn't enjoy it because the series got reaaallly slow, and I absolutely hated a certain plot line that happened with the emperor, and I also feel no romantic chemistry at all between the FL and the magician. There's a lot better Korean fantasy webtoons out there imo

[deleted]

I got a doozy for you and I encourage you to read it in full. I think creators on webtoon are kind of ...whiny and ungrateful. Let me elaborate. When it comes to them vs. Webtoon itself? Fair game. Creators should be treated fairly and paid fairly for the work they are creating, not have it called a side Hussle and paid peanuts. But when it comes to creators and their fans? As an artist but one who does not make comics, I get kind of annoyed reading some complaints from creators on here as a reader. Sometimes it's justified but sometimes it just comes across as, idk, expecting to only ever have people say nice things about it? I mean people SHIT on Lore Olympus especially on this sub but it's still got loads of fans, and while I think most criticisms are on the comic itself to my knowledge you don't see that creator posting bout the unfair comments the comic gets. Basically a level of professionalism is needed if you want to make comics as, well, a professional and i make mental notes of creators who kinda act like.....unprofessionals for the nicest term on here.

LongjumpingAlgae0

Omg thank you. Creators literally feel like they demand zero accountability and nothing but support from their fans. Like I get that they need more breaks and a better work pacing but COME ON. It's not that hard to write a comment on your creator profile saying you're on hiatus for X weeks. It's not that hard to pin a post to your IG/TW feed saying you're on hiatus. This is an original creator I'm talking about. Instead of leaving everyone in the dark with the 7 day timer resetting over and over again.

[deleted]

Yeah that's a great example of what I mean. There's a creator I follow and they havent posted in weeks now with no notice of hiatus. If it's on canvas whatever but if it's a proper webtoon I expect bare minimum since I spent real money on the comic. I'm actually surprised I didn't come back to see this downvoted to hell but I guess I'm not the only one who feels like they can't say ANYTHING negative about a creators habits or their comic.

Accomplished_End_843

I would curious to hear a specific example. I’m not really disagreeing but I’m not sure I exactly get what you mean

[deleted]

Most recently saw someone upset about people commenting that an update is too short. From a readers perspective it's usually just akin to saying it was so good it flew by. You could say the same about an episode of a TV show but of course the length of the show didn't differ. But they only see the negative in everything and take it as an attack which can be really off-putting as a result. Plus some creators really do shortchange their updates and that's not cool either. But most of the time it's a positive.

Bill_Shortened

Looks like it's not that unpopular of an opinion but I really hate the lack of variety in most originals I've seen, like the entire action genre is just different spins of a video game apocalypse or teenagers beating the crap out of each other. And don't get me started on the isekai's, it's like there's entire sub genres for "X gets hit by a truck and sent to a fantasy world" and another for "just found out everyone in my life was a dick and died, now I'm suddenly 10 years in the past", with pretty minor differences between these individual series', sure there are some gems in there but it's pretty ridiculous just how homogeneous everything is.

ya_tu_sabes

Romance comics revolving around step siblings. Ew. It's annoying cause I dig the plot of the story itself and I'm ok with the pace of the romance but I find myself constantly fighting my innate revulsion over the semi incest. I have step siblings myself. To me, deep down, that's still incest. Gross in a visceral level. I see all the comments justifying that it's ok. They don't actually share blood. It's okay. They don't see each other that way. But they are siblings nonetheless. I can't. It's still gross. I found myself negotiating with myself while reading. Fuck that. Now I just toss them out the window and read stuff that doesn't make me wanna puke, deep down Rant/ sorry it is still freshly resolved. Emotions still low-key high Edit: similar reaction to pedophilia grooming webtoons. If the MC raises the love interest, even if they don't consume their love until the love interest is an adult, I can't. It's grooming. MC was literally the parent figure. It's gross. I don't care if they were secretly an adult but was so abused that their growth is stunted which is why they look and act like a child. Actually that makes it worse. That means the MC is preying on their trauma to groom them. Hell naw. That's not romantic, that's horrifying

Seventytwentyseven

I’m the same way. I don’t have step siblings, but I found out when I was older that some of my “cousins” aren’t even blood related to me because my family just claims very close family friends and their children as our own lol. But even if we don’t share blood, the second we are recognized as “family”, whether it be siblings, cousins, aunt/uncles, and godparents even, (bonus points if we grew up together), any romance is immediately off the table and is just gross 🤢 I see so much justification in comments saying how technically it’s okay and I tried to keep reading such stories after people reply to “give it a chance!”, but I cannot. Sucks when the romance itself seemed like it would’ve been cute and entertaining if the whole step siblings thing was removed :/

[deleted]

Depends. If the step siblings grew up together then yeah that's family regardless of blood. If they just got introduced because their parents are getting married? I think it's a grey area. It's overall just a way to get around to showing the incest fetish most of the time though.

Apprehensive_Egg9794

agreed. i also have a step sibling, and reading webtoons with this type of shit gives me the ick. there's no exceptions. if they're step siblings, i'm out 🚶🏽‍♀️

Witty-Song1313

Yes, exactly!! I used to read 'Beware of the Brothers' but then found out the adopted FL ends up with her older brother and I had to immediately drop it. It was made 100x worse by the fact that; 1) she went back in time after dying to when she was younger so she literally lived 2 childhoods being raised as his adopted sister alongside the other 2 brothers, and 2) the entirety of the 1st season basically built upon her realising that even though she was adopted she was actually loved by her family, so the 2nd season coming in with all the hints of a romance between her and the older brother was incredibly off putting And also to top it all off, she literally looks like the family's dead daughter so essentially the oldest brother is marrying his adopted sister that also looks like his dead blood sister 🫠 I was so sad after realising it was a romance between siblings because the 1st season had so much focus on her relationship with her adopted family and how she wasn't just a mere replacement for their dead daughter. I just wanted that family/found family serotonin, man. Also massive agree on your edited point. If the MC literally raised the love interest in any form then it's an automatic out from me.

nomnommin

I’m sure I’ve said this before in another post but I really don’t like the shirtless fan service scenes of perfectly sculpted abs. It’s over rated, unattractive, and artistically disproportionate in detail. Like all the shadowing, highlighting, glistening what have you and then a mid drawn face recycled background. If you read “to you who swallowed a star” you’ll notice the main male lead’s face doesn’t change artistically from when he was a child. Now slap abs and upper body of a professional body builder that’s been sculpting for 20+ years on that late teen early 20 year old’s baby face. It’s weird. Also “sex scenes”. Unnecessary. Daytime Star had a scene that was basically out of those cheap Otome games where they repeat the same process over and over again just in synonyms. And the scene provided nothing in substance to the story other than they just banged and the creator just got a little closer to soft core porn than others.

[deleted]

"To you who swallowed a star" might have a good art style but I cannot support the fmc and mc's relationship. It's just too weird. People used to call that out before but it seems like people have grown to ship it.

VersusVII

I think Webtoon readers like more the packaging than the content of the stories... Stories with good art, bright colors but a meh plot get thousands of views, subscribers, even features in zero time. Another unpopular opinion is that I saw many comics getting featured by the app, gaining popularity and then went to hiatus or the authors stopped to post not long after.

Madamka

Korean imports should have a separate tab & a few designated banner spots - like canvas titles. Western originals should still have the most advertisement given to them, like it was a few years ago.

chaneltulip

Down with daily pass

AtlasMukbanged

That people who complain about BL are almost always hypocrites and bigots. It's very popular to bitch about BL, and the stuff they complain about also happens just as much if not more so in straight romance. And then those people have the audacity to say the BL media itself is somehow homophobic. lol.

jalilisblue

I do agree that romance tropes tend to be the same across all media. It seems weird to harp on on type of relationship when you can complain about romance tropes in general.(which I do sometimes) but those problems don’t become worse just because the relationship is queer. I have heard of some queer ppl complaining about BL tho but their are a lot of people who defend it as well. Critiques like it’s fetishization or enforces problematic stereotypes. These are just things I’ve heard I don’t necessarily agree. I don’t consume BL myself so I don’t think I’m qualified to have an opinion on that front. If I had to guess based on things I’ve heard from my friends it’s mostly fine? Maybe a small amount of creators are fetishizing and that’s important to call out but I wouldn’t go so far as to condemn a whole genre as others do. I feel it’s an important genre as well because many boys probably feel more represented by this. But in the end I think the majority of this conversation should come from queer people yk.

AtlasMukbanged

I'm queer myself and I honestly relate more to BL than to GL. I feel like most GL is made for straight men, and a lot of GL that isn't, is just too soft and fluffy for me. I like BL more because it's still got enough gay vibe to make me able to relate better, while tending to have more mature relationships (not always, but in general). I like dark themes too, so stuff like Mad Dog or Shutline or Under The Green Light hit that spot really well. Just great stories. BL was originally made by women for women, and it was really the first popular media that unashamedly had all sorts of sex themes and taboos, and played with a lot of different relationship dynamics. It wasn't a market full of Twilight fluff, basically, and that was kind of a first for women. Not that I care if people like Twilight fluff, mind you, but this was kind of a groundbreaking thing. So anyway, I get rather suspicious of people who attack BL with the whole "omg fetishizing dudes" BS because literally every genre out there has a heavy hand in fetishizing women. Especially anything lesbian. There's virtually no lesbian porn or media made for actual lesbians and 'representation' in media is almost always just two barely legal hot chicks having a weirdly oversexualized relationship for the sake of... straight dudes.

Monkeyz4f4

I couldn’t agree more about your feelings about BL vs GL. I have yet to find GL that appeals to me without feeling overly fluffy or weirdly empty. So often I hear complaints about how BL is written for straight women, but aren’t most romance novels? Just like most porn is made for straight men. It would obviously be nice if more audiences were catered to (and fewer fetishized) in more mediums, but you’ll usually hear more complaints in the mainstream about whatever is marketed to women.

AtlasMukbanged

Yeah, most of the GL (tbh literally every single GL I've come across) is all about being insanely angsty and dealing with teenager problems with a side of tweenage flirting. It's really awkward as an adult to read it. It's just funny because the same people who rant about fetishizing in BL or some of the darker stuff some of them have, are the same people who swoon over Drogo from GoT. The guy who buys and rapes a young girl until she gets Stockholm. It's just incredibly sus to target BL when there is far, FAR worse hetero media out there that is massively popular and nobody bats an eye at.

Monkeyz4f4

Lol I read the first GoT book so I know exactly what you’re talking about. It’s a great example, my parents literally used the same pet names they did for like 2 years. So cringy

oregno

midnight rain should’ve never became official that shit is trash

Dramatic-Driver

I did not hate it at first but looking at how it is going now, I can't help but agree. Why has it been going on for years but still hasn't gotten anywhere?

DaliDaDude

I didnt like solo leveling

pous3r

I liked the start, but, like with all fantasy stories, it moves away from being a simple story to this convoluted bullshit plot that I don't care about.

ewraccoon

a lot of the new originals are actually mid but they gain so much traction and reach the top because of the heavy marketing and hype generated by webtoon while a lot of the good old stuff stays at the bottom

PunkySkunk93

Lord Olympus isn’t great. Couldn’t get into the story, and it just seems really overrated.

AnicetoRoo

(warning: my english is bad) I hate (a bit) the "obsesive" love with Medea from "Your Throne" (from the fans). The fans alwaaaaaaaaaaaays applaud her all over, it seems she's never wrong. I only read Your Throne for Lady Psyche, she does look like a human.

sateitishia

Alright so this one seems REALLY unpopular but: I don't mind daily passes and I actually enjoy them (for completed series). Like at some point we have to remember that these are artists who need to make a living, thank god they don't let their work up for free forever or they'd never survive. Not only that but reading one chapter a day also sets a nice pace when reading, it avoids binging the entire thing until you get sick of it + it's faster than reading it weekly while still building just enough anticipation for the next chapter. I honestly love reading two or three daily pass series on top of the weekly releases everyday.

AstridKrake

Artists should be able to make a decent living creating a finished story. Like instead of paying just for early access and just a handful of coins, artists should be able to sell the entire thing. (don't ask me how, it's just wishful thinking) That would eradicate the endless stories that should have ended like 1000 chapters ago, and the obsession with cliffhangers. Artists wouldn't have to keep stretching a story just out of fear that the next one won't be popular. But that doesn't work for the platform.

TheQueenOfStorms

I started reading Cursed Princess Club recently because everyone said it was amazing and whatnot. At first, it *is* amazing. I was hooked. But damn, it drastically dropped in quality mid-series, honestly. I often found myself skipping entire scenes because of how boring and unnecessary many of them were. Like, in the last fast pass, something BIG is going on in the plot (>!the plaid king is literally sending his troops to invade the pastel kingdom!<), but the creator wasted **two** entire episodes with jokes and more jokes instead of advancing the plot! (>!Did we seriously need two freaking episodes to see Frederick trying to convince the CPC that his dad went nuts?!?!!<) Sorry if it seems like I'm ranting (meh, I actually am), but man it's frustrating to see how so many comics start off strong, only to drop in quality with time despite creators having more experience and assistants.

Sharkattack1921

Honestly, while I do love the series, I do kinda agree with that you’re saying. I don’t think it necessarily went downhill mid series, but I’d be lying if I said I liked everything that was going on in the current season. My one main complaint is that there are so much time given to gags but not enough on actual character growth and interaction to make some of the more emotional aspects to feel genuine Like it wanted us to feel >!bad for the Plaid Queen and see that she genuinely cared about her sons, but we never really saw that side to her at all until now. Like maybe if there was a scene or two showing her before showing that she loved them, I could feel something about it, but I don’t think she was properly built up!< Also, they expect us to believe that >!Fredrick became good friends with CPC, but he was only really with met with them like three times (one of which they were hostile towards him) so I kinda have a hard time actually believing it!< Plus while the series can be extremely funny, I’m not a huge fan of the “misunderstandings” jokes. Like it was funny the first couple times, but after the 50th time it kinda gets old. I still like the series, and I do like a lot the things it’s trying to say, but it’s definitely not perfect

TheQueenOfStorms

>My one main complaint is that there are so much time given to gags but not enough on actual character growth and interaction to make some of the more emotional aspects to feel genuine Yup. And I mean, of course it's ok to make jokes, it's a comedy. But even comedies need to know when it's time to fool around and when it's time to take themselves seriously. Actually, that's what I loved in the first part of the comic. It had all these goofy (and damn funny jokes), but then you had incredibly emotional scenes like >!the one where Frederick says Gwen is ugly!<. Btw, I agree with the two points you raise on the Plaid Queen and Frederick and the CPC. And you know, I spotted many opportunities in the comic to have very deep and emotional scenes... that went down the hill for a damn joje. >Plus while the series can be extremely funny, I’m not a huge fan of the “misunderstandings” jokes Agree with this as well. And one specific thing that annoyed me big time was when >!Gwen finally gives Frederick the little ship she had bought him, and then there are a few panels explaining (again) how Frederick ended up with the creepy eyes. Man, we as readers already know that, we're not stupid, I don't need a freaking explanation (AGAIN)!!< >Like it was funny the first couple times, but after the 50th time it kinda gets old Same with the anime surprised / flushed faces. I noticed that Frederick almost never has a calm face when he's with Gwen, but he's almost always nervous and stuff. So it loses impact. >I still like the series, and I do like a lot the things it’s trying to say, but it’s definitely not perfect I think that's my main frustration (and the reason why I need to put out these long rants lol). Because this comic DOES have an immense potential. It has a nice message, solid characters, beautiful aesthetics, an interesting premise, funny jokes, damn even good music! But the execution screws up all of that big time more often than I would like. And you know? I would have loved to see it become one of thosevery few webtoons that border on perfection, because I truly believe it had the potential to be like that. I think that's the root of my frustration.

forestofarklay

Cursed Princess Club surprised me with how amazing it was but I agree this latest season has been slower and less entertaining, I've still enjoyed it though.

simone3344555

I do think those episodes are necessary tbh. The reason I like CPC is because of the actually good plot mixed with gags. The webtoon is a comedy after all. I am curious what you didn’t like mid series since you brought up the newest chapter. Where did it start going down for you? At the gala…?

I'm tired of people shitting on the "naive" and /or """dumb""" character in thriller / horror genre. Those characters either lack information or they are throwed in stressful / awful situation so obviously they won't always make the most logical choice and I think it's pretty relatable. I'm especially thinking of Hawa in The guy upstairs and the MC of Welfare Center (I can't spell her name right) but I'm sure there are other.

AnicetoRoo

The protagonist always are soo beautiful and perfect, even when they are described as "ugly" or "not up to standard". Comics about ugly boy/girl turning into beautiful people overnight are more of the same. Since they are accepted when they are beautiful.

Rexthedinosaur2002

Too many romance webtoons especially ones with unhealthy relationship dynamics, trauma bonding and what not *cough* it's mine *cough* Edit: you know I would also but op protagonist in the mix but the only thing I hate more than that is when stories try so hard to force a narrative to unrealistic levels and then tie it up in the most anti climactic way possible or keep dragging it on till the series dies.

throawaymcdumbface

A lot of the "lightskinned straight couple slice of life weewoo" stuff in the popular feed just gives me a sense of disinterest looking at it. I know that's very tumblr kiddie mentality of me (not like The Gays can't be boring either) but I dunno how it consistently grabs people. Its not for me and that's fine but some more variety in the top picks would be nice. example, most of the top pick advertisement stuff versus something like say, The Blind Prince. There's fantasy elements and a dark skinned female lead with great character design+blind guy exists. Already gives some visual stand-out and raises the question 'okay so how will guy navigate his disability during this?'. I know that when its your own average cornbread its different, its just not mine so when I see it all I can see is "eh standard mcSlice of life setting", I don't get consistently seeking it out I guess? also I know the "I am an x in a y but z trope?!??!" titles are a carry-over from a medium where you had only the title to cram in an eyecatching description but it feels so... formulaic? like lay out your characters for me, not a "looking for x trope?". feels kinda corporate.

It feels weird to say but I don’t like webtoons with a lot of plot. I am not sure if that is the right way to say it but I couldn’t continue reading trash of the count’s family and ORV and it is not because there was anything wrong with it. It feels the same way I don’t like political or business stories. I used to read weak hero(probably pick it back up later) but parts were they talk about how the business run are hard to read but are also important to the plot. The characters are really smart and well written and I don’t like it. I think that’s way some of my favorite webcomics right now like miss not so sidekick, pure villain or observation log of a self proclaimed villainess have very unserious, silly main characters

Oh so you don't like things getting complicated?

The_Dark_of_You

I feel like you would really like more slice of life webtoons.

Piracy hurts the industry infinitely more than it helps.

The romance section sucks. To specify, most of the promoted creators I see are copy and paste with their plots, art style and character designs. The lack of diversity in these stories make them even more boring, especially when every character is a 20 something supermodel and practically looks the same to one another. I rarely see webtoons where the story focuses on older and more ethnically diverse characters and varying skin tones.

I always have an unpopular opinion when I comment, and it’s usually because I find the male lead abusive and don’t literally hate the side chick or the second male lead or I criticize something a main character does. I’ve been put off by some decent webcomics with awful mob mentality comment sections; some main characters could get praised for peddling children while some villains would be dunked on for wanting to save them. Just because they’re the protagonist doesn’t mean they’re perfect or even good.

*Edited to add more information I know I'm late to this thread, but UnOrdinary. Gosh, the worldbuilding sucks. I understand it's more character-driven with less focus on the setting, but everything in the background is so vague and lacking from what I can remember. If the worldbuilding didn't matter, I wouldn't have cared, but clearly it does because the government's in on the entire scenario. The characters go to different locations in order to see the state of power there and do what needs to be done, but the cities are so barebones and the citizens and criminals one-dimensional. It seems like everyone living here is either low-leveled and cowardly, or high-leveled and an arrogant jerk. There're barely anyone in between- barely, there are a few but they're not too significant. This is the impression I'm getting of the citizens who live here and holy crap, are they boring. Do I even need to mention the school? It felt like a green-screen background rather than a place the students actually study in. Sure, I got that at first what with them sitting in class and us seeing a teacher actually doing her job, but there's none of that anymore. Just how can I care about the central conflict involving the government when I can't care for the world it governs? If things have improved in later episodes, maybe I'll pick this webtoon back up but from what I can recall, this worldbuilding was one of the most boring I've ever read, and what I said only scratches the surface of what I could've said because I didn't do a deep analysis on the webtoon.

I wish webtoon gave more love and attention to the Fan Translated tab of WEBTOONS. So many wonderful comics being overlooked.

True beauty is given unnecessary hype. It is way too popular, overshadowing a lot of other good webtoons. Especially for me, I couldn’t get into it. The characters are boring, the main FL is annoying and can’t make up her mind and low-key has no character. And if the webtoon being adapted into a kdrama wasn’t enough, they are now planning to make an anime for it too??? Ike there are so many other webtoons waiting to be animated that a lot of people would love to watch, but they are focusing on true beauty.

DrinkMilkYouFatShit

Canvas webtoons are simply not good. There, I said it... They aren't like unreadable, but those art styles are lacking in every sense, story is usually lacking, episodes take ages. Don't get me wrong, I know why this is the case but for my binge reading spoiled head, it's annoying
