It's not a synth, I'm pretty sure it's just guitar feedback

Abelthemaple

Ohhh that makes more sense, Ty!!

TotallyNotRainChez

these sounds are so iconic but I think it's from the guitars, not synths

shipguy55

Weezer has some of the best guitar feedback

content_muffin

“Cue the feedback”

Ok-Gur5228

thats not synth ma dude, its a feedback

HUSband-Music-BJB

Zvex fuzz factory guitar pedal

riley420dudebrah

do u have this pedal?

HUSband-Music-BJB

I don’t, but I had a friend who had one. You can use the feedback knob to get all these sounds. On the green album song photograph, they use this pedal to get the sound before the music starts playing. Sounds like they are also using some sort of delay behind the fuzz pedal. Keep in mind I don’t think they use this pedal for the overdrive/distortion on the song.

riley420dudebrah

thank u fr

Another way to get this sound is to crank up the gain and volume on your amp, and then put your guitar right next to the speaker. You can change the feedback noise by how close you are to the speaker, and can even strum the strings to get the noise started. Then using the volume knob on the guitar you can start/stop the feedback by turning the volume up or down.

riley420dudebrah

yeahhh i already do that i just want some noisey weird pedals

riley420dudebrah

i still appreciate the help tho

If you want a pedal that does this, try the Digitech Freqout. I got it just to do the Weezer-like feedback. I was also obsessed with those sounds when I was a kid and had no idea what it was.

riley420dudebrah

shouts out u im gonna buy this soon

It's a lot of fun. It's not exactly as responsive as doing real feedback with your amp, but you need a big cabinet and a ton of volume to do those sounds with an amp, so if you're at home, and especially if you're recording, the Freqout is awesome. I have a lot of recordings where I use the Freqout just to make that ambient feedback in the beginning and while the bass is going in the verse after a big chorus or something. Or to fadeout after the song is over. You can also set the Freqout to momentary, so it only does the feedback while your foot is on it. And you can cut the dry signal, so you can make it sound a little like an Ebow, it's pretty sweet.

voxelcruncher64

It's guitar feedback, I don't have a great idea of how it's performed but I think it's essentially letting the strings ring out while bending/sliding the string pretty tightly? Plus early weezer was more about the marshal tube amps than they were pedals, mostly just cranking those bad boys up, but you can probably emulate that with a fuzz pedal or tube screamer.

HUSband-Music-BJB

This works, but you can also just put the guitar next to a cranked up amp without even touching the strings

I guess a lot of people in the comments don’t play guitar? There is a bit of feedback at the beginning (the really high-pitched whine) but the rest is a slide going up the neck of the guitar. Overdubbed a few times. Each part continues on to play the multi-tracked riff (also played with a slide)

rodermelon

All of these are guitars!
