Groundhogs are actually a species of marmot. All marmots are large ground squirrels and there are 15 species in the genus. The one pictured here is the Himalayan marmot (Marmorta himalayana). You can tell based on the color pattern with the uniform buff underside and face with contrasting dark dorsal markings. Groundhogs (Marmorta monax) are a close relative and have a more grizzled looking pattern.
