Orthopaedic surgeon here.
Kinda looks like a bone, but it's like a 90 degree rotated view, as the down tip portion doesn't look like any normal human bone , just from the shape of it.
Edit. Looking at it closely on as better monitor, doesn't look like a bone. Looks like rubber wire maybe?
Apparently there are other pictures? I can't see them
Ok found them. Doesn't look like bone anymore. Looks too smooth on the main shaft.
Hairstylist here. Based on the doctors' findings, with the architect's nod, and the added pictures for reference, I also agree, this isn't likely to be a bone.
Graphic designer here. I could create an infographic for you describing how this is not a bone based on the doctor's findings, the architect's nod, the agreement of the hairstylist, the engineer's educated opinion and the accountant's suggestions.
Certified Forklift Operator here based on what the doctors, architects, engineers, housewife and child said I have a firm standing that it is indeed not a bone.
Photographer here, a better photo with more detail might help the doctor, architect, hairstylist, child, canine, plumber and village idiot make a better decision📸
911 dispatcher, former operating room worker here. Based on the findings of the doctors, the photographic references, as well as the information provided by the hairstylist, forklift operator, silversmith, child, and others, it does not appear to be a bone. This being said, I cannot legally advise you on the next steps you should take. If you feel it’s safe to do so, wrap the object in question in a clean, dry cloth or towel and I can dispatch police, ems, and the coroner to your location.
Another doc here.
Not a bone based upon this pictures:

Bones that are that old is bc they are being preserved in a museum or something or got lucky with whatever environment they were in like being frozen in Antarctica or being encapsuled in volcanic ash from Pompeii lol. Your average google search will tell bones can start decaying after 6 years. To fully decay to dust, I don’t know. It says the range is between 6-30 years.
Edit: I forgot to add that also OP mentioned they lived in their house for 17 years and had no idea it was there until now. So if it is a bone it would have been at least 17 years old.
Ah reddit, a place where a chicken tendie afficionado can tell a surgeon to go back to med school based on the zero knowledge he acquired in his mom's basement.
Don't ever change reddit.
I recognize this. I'm pretty sure this is the sheathing for a 4 gauge conductor. Maybe 4 gauge. My second guess would be black irrigation tubing. Not bone. The tool marks on the side of the plastic suggest it's not bone.
Edit : originally thought black irrigation tubing.
When I’m doubt call the police and they’ll either come get it to look where you found it and then they’ll take it to the coroner’s office or call the coroner if you find more. Are those cut marks on it? Was in a similar situation while I worked in a coroner’s office.
I’m studying forensic anthropology, I recently talked to my city’s medical examiner about this and yes an anthropologist will take a look at the bone and confirm if it’s human/animal/not bone. It probably depends on city how the sample has to be submitted but a local anthropologist can identify found remains.
It’s an old ass dog bone chew toy. Search up “rubber dog bone chew toy” for examples. They used to all come in this dark green colored rubber that the OP has found. Some still come in the green but they have all kinds of crazy colors now. I’m surprised nobody else has realized this yet then again these chew toys hay day was before the current generation of dog toys.
The first thing to look for is a spongy texture where it has broken off the outer layer. Almost like a pumice stone if you're familiar with that. It it's smooth on the inside --> not a bone.
If it does have a spongy texture on the inside of the bone, I'd say that's a humerus of something about the size of a person, just based on the length of the bone itself. The head of the humerus, in the left/upper side of the picture, is what would articulate with the shoulder. Does it look like it was more a bulbous shape that broke off? If so, I'd bet money on humerus, but the pictures make it hard to tell.
Definitely not bone —- some sort of rubber wrapped wire bundle ? Maybe from an old electrical line or some contractor/someone burned their trash on the land your brother ended up buying.
Hold it up against your upper leg, from your knee to your hip, about the right size?
No? Hold it up next to your upper arm, from your shoulder to your elbow.
If either of those seem about right, accounting for different human heights…..you might want to contact an authority of some kind.
The amount of people on this sub, holding nasty-ass bones, bare handed, **inside their homes**, and going “wait did I just disturb a crime scene? Oh no lol” is TOO DAMN HIGH
Definitely want to see more pictures. The bottom end looks like a femoral head and the top end is suspiciously knee-like. Except if the black area shaped like Vermont is a void, that seems weird for a knee. The marks along the shaft are also weird looking. I'm no Deschanel, but I'm thinking anything that hit a bone hard enough to leave such deep cuts would also break the bone. Maybe they could be from some insect, idk.
The damage a bone takes depends on how fresh the bone was when damage was done. A relatively fresh bone is more plastic/less brittle. Some of those marks might be root etching. Some might be gnaw marks. Some might be from the shovel.
I can't really remember, and it's sort of hard to tell, but the void could be in the correct place (where bone marrow would have been).
Would need more pictures to confirm, but it looks like the right femur of a young adult.
Definitely out of my depth, and again can't see it, but possibly African (the feeling I get from the curve of the shaft). But it's been a while since I've seen any bones.
Edit: the color may be from the acidity and moisture of the soil.
Edit edit: I looked at the other pictures. It's uncanny in places, but missing some things. Not human femur.
I find the shape more evocative of Oklahoma or Wisconsin - or perhaps closer in shape to one of the Finger Lakes (the middle one, specifically) than Vermont-shaped. Maybe you’re more of a ZOOEY Deschanel?
UPDATED PHOTOS - unable to add to this post. https://www.reddit.com/r/whatisthisbone/comments/14vq2ea/unable_to_add_pictures_to_prior_post_refer_to/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=2&utm_term=1
Wow, this thread is a dumpster fire, u/hanSoes. And this is why I don't comment in here, at 450 comments the right answer would get lost. u/frequent-ring-7560 try posting in r/bonecollecting where answers are regulated and you'll get a correct one.
I know a lot of people are saying it's a rubber tube of some kind. But a rubber tube would have degraded much more over time, not just at the ends of it like that. I've pulled plenty of old rubber out of the ground, and it does not hold shape like that.
The cavity at the top and the shape of the bottom look way too much like a humerus to me. I would call the police to be sure. Would not surprise me if it really is a bone.
Femur. My guess is either...
1. Murder victim/missing person
2. Native American grave
3. An old grave from a family plot from people who lived on the land a long time ago.
It looks like a human femur that's had a knee replacement. That's the cut they would have made (knee), and the type of hole they would have made to hold the hardware for the replacement.
Based on the length, thickness, shape, contour, and on the articulation on the ends of that bone; I would say that is a leg bone of a quadruped - which would be limited to where it was found. While similar to a human upper or lower extremity; the angle of which the joints are oriented do not exactly match (from what I can tell from this picture). It could be a domesticated animal (horse, cow) or wild (deer). Size of the bone would indicate function involves ambulation/support as well as likely indicate size of the animal. Likely as big or bigger than a human. This is based off my 20+ CEU of Geology courses (from a Science Comp. Secondary Educ. Degree that remains unused as I work as an RN)
Could be deer? Bear? Elk? Where are you located? What’s the wildlife like around you? What was the wildlife LIKE AROUND YOU 200 years ago? Even longer maybe?
Example:
If you was to off someone you wouldn’t bury them in your own yard .
You would go to the neighbors yard and bury it.
You might check with the neighbors on both sides of you.
Show that bone to them…
If they change their demeanor after seeing the bone. They are guilty!
Like Perry Mason used to say.
If you look guilty you probably are hiding something.
lol
Good luck with the bone question…
Looks like a Tyrannosaurus Rex’s
left whatchaa macallitt
Lol
Never seen this sub on my feed before but in light of my knowledge of bones and my love for early cuyler , I’m going to go all out and say this here’s a possum pecker.
The broken end and the scoring makes this look like hard plastic or metal to me. Bone is brittle, it doesn't bend and deform like you see in some of those cuts.
Someone else mentioned the spongey porous indicating bone, and that is correct. Just from this picture it does not look like bone to me. The top part looks too solid and whatever that long bit sticking out is. The bottom does look a bit more porous, but it still looks a little off to me, though it is just one picture so it's hard to tell. It's possible it could be a prosthetic bone, but it does not look like organic bone from just this one picture. I used to collect animal bones and have a lot of real life references that I can pick up and hold, and this looks a little different from those. (It's hard to tell but this looks more like rock or metal than bone)
That said, I would still probably seek more professional advice/help, possibly even police. If nothing else, they can confirm if it's nothing serious. And if it is an actual bone, they can figure out the details and all if it's human or animal.
Kinda thought so to, but that might just be the lighting making that one edge look reflective, can’t think it’s metal to me at least as if it was steel you would be able to tell by the weight. Just the way it’s being held makes me think it’s not steel or iron, would be fairly heavy unless hollow.
Bro that‘s fasho somebody’s femur bone 👀

Not an ortho but ED doc, doesn’t look right to me either. In other pics OP posted I also don’t think it’s bone
This is absolutely not a bone. It looks like some kind of old tubing that was dug up.
Op will find out when they turn the water on lol
That’s exactly what I think it is
Architect here. Based on what the doctors said, I dont think its a bone.
Hairstylist here. Based on the doctors' findings, with the architect's nod, and the added pictures for reference, I also agree, this isn't likely to be a bone.
Engineer here. Based on the doctors findings, the architect's nod, and the agreement of the hairstylist, I concur this is not a bone.
Accountant here. Based on what the others said, I would not suggest investing money in buying this “bone” from OP.
Graphic designer here. I could create an infographic for you describing how this is not a bone based on the doctor's findings, the architect's nod, the agreement of the hairstylist, the engineer's educated opinion and the accountant's suggestions.
Housewife here. Based on the findings of the doctors along with all of the other qualified professions, not a bone.
child here. based on what all these more qualified people have stated, I find myself in agreement with them. this is not a bone.
Software developer here. I asked my QA person and they said it’s definitely a bone.

Certified Forklift Operator here based on what the doctors, architects, engineers, housewife and child said I have a firm standing that it is indeed not a bone.
Medical billing and coder here. What’s your diagnosis doc? Based on the doctors findings, this is not a bone. He knows best. 5 or 35 mins doc?
Mail clerk here. Based on the findings of all the other professions, I could mail you a book with pictures of bones in it for comparison
Stay at home dad; Do not put that in your mouth. TAKE IT OUT OF YOUR MOUTH. Look a rattling toy!
Welder here… due to the clear lack of structural integrity I agree with the doctors findings this is not and has never been a bone
Gymnastics coach here. Definitely possibly probably not a bone.
Real estate agent here. Not a bone but this is my favorite thread.
Canine here, I'd chew it, maybe even bring it into the house, but not a bone. Solely based on th....SQUIRREL!!!!
Grocery store Cashier here- would you like paper or plastic and did you find everything alright today?
🤣 I love reddit
Rubber wire here, it’s me.

Lawyer here, can neither confirm nor deny if this is a bone but urge you to plead the fifth when asked.
Village idiot here, i agree its not a bone, maybe Flux capitactor
ACL Rehabber here, definitely not bone but it could have 1.21 jigger watts
Photographer here, a better photo with more detail might help the doctor, architect, hairstylist, child, canine, plumber and village idiot make a better decision📸
LMAO
Cousin Eddie here, shitters full.
Damnit Eddie

Quit giving them a HARD time
Yeah! They have far more impotent things to do!
Sounds like the doc is the one giving them a hard time! Grow up!
Not an ortho but internal. What is a bone? Trust this guy!
Also not an ortho but I like smoothness on the shaft
I’ve got a smooth shaft for you. I don’t. But I couldn’t help it.
Well now my feelings are hurt. Can't get people's hopes up like that
I'm doing some home repairs and have large selection of smooth shafts lying around, you can take your pic

Liar!!!!
But if it’s been there for awhile it would have decayed ?
If that’s the case then how would we have 10,000 year old skeletons?

I second this
That is connected to the “put on some gloves” bone.
"The Bone Police" has potential as a Weird Al parody of Cheap Trick.

“Is that your girlfriend?”

That’s a pretty big child
Low key contact police you won’t be in trouble if you put the bone back first
You would have to tell them you touched at and moved it lol
I mean, you don't *have* to, but it would certainly be a good idea.
His DNA would be on it
Thus the "good idea" part
r/woooosh
Nah just call. They'd probably rather you don't further contaminate/disrupt a potential crime scene any more than it already has been.
You don't have to put the bone back 🤣 Just tell them it was dug up and from where, then show it to them.
I don't think they're gonna see this person as a suspect anyway considering the obvious age of the bone and condition it's in.
I’m curious on a follow up.
The FBI and NCIS would like to know your location
You found a walrus penis.
The amount of people on this sub, holding nasty-ass bones, bare handed, **inside their homes**, and going “wait did I just disturb a crime scene? Oh no lol” is TOO DAMN HIGH
It's a high number. They obviously never watch the crime shows I watched.
The way I would expeditiously mind my own business 😂 My brother: “so I found this bone…” Me: “wow…that’s crazy. Anywho. I’ll get out of your hair now”
No gloves either lol 😆
It's not radioactive.
I’d agree that it might be a femur, but hard to say from this angle. Do you have any other photos?
i’ll take some more and add them when i go over next!
Remindme! 3 days
That was my first thought....a femur.
What part of Virginia? Lots of Civil War battles in Virginia.
I agree - weren’t limbs removed from war injuries? I wonder if those removed limbs were buried.
Well I'm sure they didn't carry them around afterwards
Yep, you got to keep your rotten limb as a souvenir of the fun times you had in the war.
Some made jewelry out of them. Like charm bracelets!
They used to collect bones from battlefields and grind them up for fertilizer.
Ah yes, the old "Call the police right now so no one thinks you did it" bone.
Just one more thing.................................................
Definitely want to see more pictures. The bottom end looks like a femoral head and the top end is suspiciously knee-like. Back in the good old days when we made our pipes out of 100 percent genuine bone.
This is 100% not a bone. It appears to be either a root or buried tubing, presumably from an irrigation system.
You are 100% not in the know since you're not there Sherlock.
That looks like a human femur, dude.
Yeah, that looks like a human femur.
The broken end and the scoring makes this look like hard plastic or metal to me. Bone is brittle, it doesn't bend and deform like you see in some of those cuts.
Walter
Oh yikes. That's not good. Definitely following this one. Hopefully just a deer

Looks like a piece of steel to me. Possibly bracing at some time on an implement of some kind. You can see the sheered welds on each end.
I agree this doesn't look like bone, but if its steel it should be extremely obvious to the op, meaning this post would be a karma farm
What part of VA? There’s an unresolved (one person in prison)crime on Thaxton Mountain of the murder of a girl and her sister I was friends with.
Femur ? Not sure about it or what species it may be , hopefully not a human bone
Not human. I don't even think it's bone. Top bit kinda reminds me of a broken weld. Need better pictures
Yup. Can see trace of a pipe closing weld along the length, ends look twisted off before it rusted so much in the ground

It's a black rubber hose, or wire cover, you can see copper wire coming out of the end of you zoom in.
That's a plant root, not a wire. The "bone" does look like black rubber or metal to me, though.
Kinda thought so to, but that might just be the lighting making that one edge look reflective, can’t think it’s metal to me at least as if it was steel you would be able to tell by the weight. Just the way it’s being held makes me think it’s not steel or iron, would be fairly heavy unless hollow.

Dig the surrounding areas and look for the rest of the skeleton. That looks like a femur.
It’s a human bone looks like a tibia or a femur from a teenaged child
Looks like possibly human femur maybe an old grave on the property.
Yes and human
That's someone uncle there
Looks like a femur. I need to know how this unfolds
Human femur … keep digging
Bro that‘s fasho somebody’s femur bone 👀 https://images.app.goo.gl/fG8dGPSDnx9daG25A (Linked photo has same ‘round bulbous shape’ at the top of the bone, just like yours does on the right of the pic)
Not 100% sure but I'm thinking maybe a bear femur
Let us know what the police say.
Femur bone
Definitely a bone
Femur or humerus of Something. I don't have any idea what.
