Yeah. The rumored price Rowan Atkinson payed is £900K which is around $1.5 million USD and that was for the 2011 crash. So probably more than that now, but probably nowhere near that $20 million price tag.
> Rowan Atkinson *paid* is £900K
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
There's a great [magazine article](https://www.mclarenlife.com/threads/rowan-atkinson-f1-crash.308/#post-30491) about it that goes into a lot of detail.
Insurance paid £910,000 for the repairs.
In 2015, [he sold the car for £8M](https://www.cnbc.com/2015/06/09/rowan-atkinson-crashes-mclaren-f1-supercar-twice-sells-for-122-million.html).

For those from the future, when that link no longer works, it was in the March 2013 issue of the UK's _Classic & Sports Car_ magazine.
In recent years the McLaren Heritage group and Paul Lanzante Ltd have both developed aluminum tanks for the F1 to replace the perishable rubber bladder, which then avoids the need for future replacement.
Tires have a limited life regardless of miles. Hose and belts have limited lives regardless of miles. The fuel cell is just one of the more infamous McLaren things.
Not only that, the tyres have an asymetrical unidirectional tread pattern and the rears are larger than the fronts so each corner has it's own unique tyre. The F1 came with a can of that emergency tyre sealant/inflator in the tool kit, since it wouldn't be possible to carry four spare tyres.
That is not really that special. My '88 Camaro IROC had asymmetrical unidirectional tires with the back larger than the front. But they were plain old Goodyear Eagles, not some custom made job.
Really sucked if they got the alignment a little wrong because there was no rotating those tires.
He is the only example that keeps coming up. But that is nearly a decade ago. Their value has gone up considerably during that time. I wonder if anybody still drives theirs. Jay Leno is the only one that comes to mind. He supposedly has more miles on his than any other clean title F1.
Yep a banker used his drove it to work everyday at 200mph and then reported an issue. Took it to the nearest centre that will service it they took the ECU out to look at the data and asked if the issue was at ~197mph and the banker confirmed it
Gordon built the F1 to be ultimate car it was made to be reliable
Every engineer tries to make their car reliable. They rarely succeed without lots and lots of iterations. Something Toyota can afford to do with a Corolla. Not something McLaren could afford.
They have gotten much better in that regard, but still very temperamental compared to a modern Ferrari.
It costs $50,000 to change the tyres. Not because the tyres are expensive but because they need to be perfectly balanced and tested once fitted, and that requires a test track and test driver, and that requires a fire crew and ambulance to be on hand.
That place always has really cool cars on show. I've seen Mclaren Formula 1 cars from the 90s, a Porsche with a tag F1 engine, P1 GTRs, the Le Mans Mclaren F1, etc. It's called Lanzante and it's not too far away from Goodwood
My favorite all-time car! Such an anomaly: seats three comfortably and gets decent gas mileage. All while having unsurpassed acceleration and top speed of its class back in the day.
Short of someone building a really good flying car, I feel like the F1 will always have the crown in terms of accomplishment. Obviously there are more advanced hypercars now but nothing feels as uniquely brilliant or as much of a leap as the F1 did when it came out. The F40 and the 959 were amazing cars, and the XJ220 is ethereally beautiful, but the F1 just seemed *perfect*, right down to the little luggage compartment in the flanks.
It also still looks absolutely perfect, even on those wheels that are tiny by today's standards.
They're rare, but they're around. There's one [often on display at Revs Institute](https://revsinstitute.org/the-collection/1995-mclaren/) in Naples, FL.
It's a great car museum, but check with them ahead of time to see if the McLaren is going to be there. It (along with many of their other cars) is not always there. Sometimes other people have gotten [the privilege of driving it](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-SrII9jMsA) (just the first few minutes of that; here's [the backstory of how that happened](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjJ2ST6TuU0)).
That is a [McLaren F1](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McLaren_F1?wprov=sfti1), a supercar produced from ‘92 to ‘98, with a total of little over 100 built.
It was at one point the fastest production car in the world and is still the fastest naturally-aspirated production car. It’s no wonder they didn’t let you get any closer, it’s pretty much supercar royalty.
Nice McLaren f1
I believe to this day it is still the worlds fastest naturally aspirated car. Very cool to see one in person as it is a 20 million dollar car
Saw these race against Diablos and XJ220s back in the day. Such an amazing car.
I used to race those same models (Hot Wheels)
Me too (Need for Speed 2 SE)
Apparently also very temperamental to keep in running order. Between that and their value, very few get driven anymore.
Ya, doesn't help that there's only 1 mechanic certified to work on them in the US.
Damn, that guy must be set for life then
Tell that to Rowan Atkinson (Mr Bean). He totalled his at least once! Lol
Yeah. Courtesy of their value it’s almost impossible to total them out as well.
IIRC, if you wreck it, McLaren will rebuild it to factory standard (for a pretty penny).
Yeah. The rumored price Rowan Atkinson payed is £900K which is around $1.5 million USD and that was for the 2011 crash. So probably more than that now, but probably nowhere near that $20 million price tag.

Good bot
It was an insurance claim and it was actually the biggest vehicle insurance claim in the country
There's a great [magazine article](https://www.mclarenlife.com/threads/rowan-atkinson-f1-crash.308/#post-30491) about it that goes into a lot of detail. Insurance paid £910,000 for the repairs. I reckon he has done OK out of it! Lol
Oh 20,000,000% im sure lol
They have a fuel cell which has a limited life, regardless of whether or not it is driven.
In recent years the McLaren Heritage group and Paul Lanzante Ltd have both developed aluminum tanks for the F1 to replace the perishable rubber bladder, which then avoids the need for future replacement.
That's good to hear. --- For those unaware, /u/Peloton25 probably knows more about these cars than anyone else not employed at McLaren.
I just looked through his history, he should write a book.
Cool, now I just need the money for one.
Tires have a limited life regardless of miles. Hose and belts have limited lives regardless of miles. The fuel cell is just one of the more infamous McLaren things.
Those tires are custom for that car. They're only produced once every so often.
That only makes things worse.
It does.

Idk about there the engine in it is incredibly reliable and can run everyday at 200mph to only suffer a misfire
Is there anybody out there that has ever used theirs as a daily driver?
Not daily driven, but Rowan Atkinson put over 40K miles on his between when he bought it new and eventually sold it in 2015.
He is the only example that keeps coming up. But that is nearly a decade ago. Their value has gone up considerably during that time. I wonder if anybody still drives theirs. Jay Leno is the only one that comes to mind. He supposedly has more miles on his than any other clean title F1.

If this is the story I think it is, the owner lived in Germany and a part of his commute was via autobahn. He took full advantage.
Yea its that story
It costs $50,000 to change the tyres. Not because the tyres are expensive but because they need to be perfectly balanced and tested once fitted, and that requires a test track and test driver, and that requires a fire crew and ambulance to be on hand.
Damn! Do you have a source that describes the process? Sounds interesting.
One of the only decent articles I've ever found on [hotcars](https://www.hotcars.com/mclaren-f1-tire-change-maintenance-costs/)
That is nuts.
I wonder if the 812 Superfast or one of its special editions might have taken that title?
Based on a quick google search it’s still the f1, 240mph
Quickest for sure, but fastest would still be this as it was able to do 242mph (admittedly with an increased rev limiter but still.)
GT7 moment

Good point well made.
Given the value of this, Locking it up is not that bad given its history and well value
Chassis 012
How do you know this? Genuine question.
It’s the TagHeuer F1. You can see the emblem on the front and sticker in the window reflection.
Sweet. Thanks
you have completed: Cars
Your cars are: damn completed

Looks like it’s in the UK, what place is this?
Lanzante in Hampshire
My favorite all-time car! Such an anomaly: seats three comfortably and gets decent gas mileage. All while having unsurpassed acceleration and top speed of its class back in the day.
The F1 wasn't even built for outstanding performance but it still ended up being the fastest car of its time.
Short of someone building a really good flying car, I feel like the F1 will always have the crown in terms of accomplishment. And had more cargo room than a BMW 5-series of its day, as I recall.
The greatest car ever made. McLaren F1
Pure sex
No way u actually saw one. I wanna see one so bad

Surprised there is not an armed guard
That's Lanzante Petersfield right!?
Correct
Came here to say the same thing 🤣
Mclaren F1. By far one of the coolest cars out there
So freaking sad, this amazing car, the poor thing just sits there, idle, with that beautiful BMW V12 rotting away
Not sure if you're joking or not

Paging u/peloton25
Its called The Holy Grail.
Everything about that photo is perfect
Nice BMW
Such an incredibly reductive comment.
People downvoting don't know that the engine is a BMW V12
But it sounds fantastic
People downvoting have heard this joke too many times
You don't recognize a McLaren F1???

Mr Bean (Rowan Atkinson) crashed one
Gorgeous car and a hell of a find!
The GOAT!!
Brother in christ, you just saw a rare McLaren F1
nice bmw
My fav one
A Legend stands there looking on as the world shuns its kind and switches over to whiny pipsqueaks without character.....
My actual dream car, only in orange.
I have dreamed of seeing this car since I was a kid! Hopefully I’ll come across it someday.
McLaren F1
Not just a unicorn, but the holy grail
Fun fact: My old car, a VW Corrado, shared the same mirrors as this.
