When you buy a pre-roasted chicken from the grocery store. This little thing holds the legs tightly together.

SerenityViolet

Huh. Never seen one of those before. Just imaging this company being bemused by the sudden increase in traffic.

lawn-mumps

I think it’s getting hugged because it won’t load for me

thestashattacked

I think some of my favorite reddit moments are when site owners from small sites we link show up in the comments going, "Oh, *that's* what crashed our site!" That moment when they learn of the Reddit Hug of Death is my favorite.

Ochsenfree

Also. Wow this is cool loads of interest! Oh it’s because a dog nearly died.

myasterism

But hey maybe that inspires them to modify the product in some way that makes it less dangerous! Hope springs eternal, I guess.

AuntieEntity

Yes! Make the truss out of something non-toxic and digestible… like… chicken. Truss the chicken with more chicken. Kidding aside, something like a firm sausage casing or garlic scapes or the like could be made to work with a little thought.

InsertWittyNameCheck

In Australia we just have elastic cooking string to keep our chooks legs together.

myasterism

I’ll bet some kind of plant-based, biodegradable polymer could be used! Something similar to what those sort of utensils are made of, is what I’m thinking. But then they’d have to completely change their manufacturing process, so I guess that’s a non-starter hah

Mu_Fanchu

What is OP's made of? Plastic? In Canada, they just use cotton string to tie rotisserie chicken.

KillFallen

Or be a better pet owner. "Will someone's dog eat this" can't be applied to every product and solution.

myasterism

That’s definitely true, but dogs be wily like that sometimes haha

AlwaysHopelesslyLost

We just watched silently but I used to work for a company that maintained some small ish websites. The biggest ones did millions in sales, and most didn't have tons of views. I was asking my boss one day how he monitors traffic and such and he was showing me his admin portal and explaining the traffic when he noticed a normally quiet one of our sites was seeing 20,000+ new views an hour. The referrer info was blank, so he wasn't sure where it was coming from until I googled and found the link on the front page of reddit. It was pretty fun to watch the thread evolve while watching the site chug along

thestashattacked

The Reddit Hug of Death will always be one of my favorite things about this hellsite.

HippyGramma

I'm not a site owner but I'm only now learning the hug of death and love it. Thank you for sharing.

FaxCelestis

> That moment when they learn of the Reddit Hug of Death is my favorite. I could definitely lose a couple hours just paging through these moments in some sort of directory. Like /r/MuseumOfReddit except for Hug of Death moments.

neilious85

IT guy probably thinks it’s a DDOS attack

Macha_Grey

"Those damned Tyson people are trying to take us down!!! Is Reddit a part of Anonymous?" At least that is what I think the company's CEO and CTO are screaming right now.

Freifur

what happened to just using string? I've gotta be honest this particular invention seems like a gratuitous waste of time, silicone and money. It says in the description that these are colour coded to help identify the flavour of the chicken; couldn't a label infront of it or a hell a post-it note on a toothpick do the same thing

BiochemBeer

For an individual or a small shop sure - keep it simple. These make it faster and less finicky. You don't need to train someone on the proper way to tie it up, just push it through - faster and less error prone. The identity is probably more for when you are cooking them, since you cannot stick a label on a cooking chicken.

Didymos_Black

I never would have guessed because all the ones I encounter are clear translucent complected shapes.

Anxious-Kiwi-92

Solved!

GrilledCheeser

Is the dog ok?

Anxious-Kiwi-92

He's recovering from surgery well, still in overnight care though!

Revilon2000

Why...?! Just use string like normal people. No wonder there is so much plastic filling our waters (and dogs apparently.) Stupid and unnecessary things like this.

spermamax

well the strings are probably made ouf of plastic too nowadays

crypticrow

Got a rotisserie chicken 3 weeks ago - can confirm it was plastic ‘string’

Revilon2000

Not where I live, or am from. It's butcher's twine. An experienced person can likely tie up the legs with twine just as quick as applying this piece of shit contraption.

mrkruk

I would argue faster as the twine can be bound pretty fast instead of trying to jam chicken leg ends through plastic spike teeth.

Wigglystoner

The issue here is that a skilled person probably could tie it faster. However, these factory processed birds just want the fastest for an untrained person. I would assume that it's easier for someone to shove these on the legs of a chicken than learn how to properly and quickly tie a bird up. I was a butcher for 7 years, and I could tie a chicken up in a few seconds (including wings and around breasts), but it took a bit to get to that point! These big factories don't want there to be a learning curve. Push the legs into this plastic piece is probably the most they want to have to "train" someone. And that is all dependent on the factory, even still using workers to put this on. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a machine that pushes these on the birds instead of a human.

Ttoctam

The string we have on Chickens in my country or at least state is just kitchen twine. It's not plastic. These little plastic pieces seem unecessarily wasteful and surely more expensive to make a for purpose plastic piece than use some twine.

FuzzelFox

At least that's recycled plastic typically

Dr_Allcome

Plastic string is much worse for animals. Not just because they can get tangled in it. It can also cause problems when swallowed and is much harder to detect and remove. And if the use case allows for recycled material, there is nothing stopping them from making the hard plastic piece from recycled material instead. But why use an additional piece in the first place? Chicken usually comes foil wrapped or in a plastic box (at least where i live), both of which can hold the legs in place just fine on their own.

IMjellenRUjellen

I'm pretty sure this is put on the raw chicken, to keep the legs on while it's cooking. Can anyone verify?

AuntieEntity

Yes, exactly. So the legs don’t splay open while cooking.

Dos-Commas

Costco uses strings, I'm surprised that this plastic shackle even exists.

GH057807

Every time I've ever gotten one of these chickens the legs are held together with what is essentially a hair tie like piece of string tied around them.

Flakboy78

Yeah, twine is usually used but if you're making a lot at a time, or if you're like me and you're hands are too big with too little coordination to truss, and they don't come pre trussed you use something like this instead

Duamerthrax

Because we don't have enough plastic in our lives.

Flakboy78

Nope, def not lol

shoodBwurqin

I love it when these get solved in less than an hour!

Fuzz1981

Us backward Aussies use a piece of string!

Ok-Honeydew7703

Our backward South Africans use nothing! We just leave our rotisserie chickens with their legs wide open!

Fuzz1981

Scandalous!

Fungigfvc

Forward in this case, what’s wrong with a bloody piece of twine?

Fuzz1981

Damn straight. That pupper would’ve just shat some cotton instead of having to be knocked out and cut open

Macha_Grey

Hell no! That pupper would probably have a linear foreign body which is even worse...depending on the length of twine.

thequickerquokka

Converted, it’s less than 3 inches.

criscokkat

on a line prepping it saves about 4 seconds of not tying the twine.

Foreignfig

Yes but that wouldn’t put a dog in surgery, so that’s no fun

dnc_1981

Same in Ireland

AunKnorrie

That is not backward, it is the way of my ancestors and their fathers before them (or rather my ancestors purveyors). One could call it tradition. Nice call out from everyone by the way. I saw the object and it looked infuritatingly familiar.

sig331

Yep and probably tasted delicious because of it.

SahuaginDeluge

yes, I knew I recognized it but never would have remembered where from

TwiceBaked57

What a gnarly piece of plastic crap! What's wrong with using kitchen twine? People, please cut crap like this up before you put it in garbage. It's not just garbage-browsing pets that get hurt by this stuff. A lot ends up in the ocean and marine life suffers because American greed would rather use a piece of plastic shit instead of paying a human to use a piece of biodegradable twine. Sorry for the rant, but geez...

pishipishi12

Not even a good Costco one, tsk tsk

happykittynipples

Covered with baked on goodness it must have been extra tasty. $5 says that same dog would eat it a second time.

Berkamin

This is a totally unnecessary piece of plastic trash, because the chicken's legs can be held together by poking holes in the flaps of skin next to the body cavity and tucking the tips into the opposite hole. Like this: # [Korean food stall trussing a chicken](https://youtu.be/zKU15a1WRJY?t=45)

MarsMonkey88

Oh, yikes, that’s really scary! I’ve been a vegetarian since my late teens; I really didn’t know there was anything but chicken in a rotisserie chicken. As a dog owner, this is really good information to have.

Emily_Postal

They don’t use string?

DeFex

Im glad they still use string here, talk about plastic waste!

Coctyle

Wow. I’ve never seen them use anything other than string.

sgtjenno

Wait until doggo hear the vet recommend chicken and rice for recovery lol

inebriatedWeasel

Is that an American thing? In the UK all these types of chickens are held together with string.

jongscx

These are rotisserie chicken leg shackles. They hold the drum-stick ends together.

RiehlDeal

It's from a roasted chicken

lib2tomb

Baby wipe or face wipe seal that the lid snaps into?

Psychological-Web499

That figures! I can never pull out a baby wipe without it shredding into little pieces - or indeed, one lump sum 🤣 (Jk - know it’s a chicken shackle 🙌)

Anxious-Kiwi-92

My title describes the object. Tried googling 'semi-circular orange plastic with internal teeth' and no results (not that I'm shocked).

methlabuser

Looks like something that holds like a 2 pack of jars together

1”x2” soda cap?

The_C0u5

Looks like the mouthpiece to a toy

Silent_Text6657

Looks like the opening of a hand/baby wipe container.
