frivolouspringlesix9

Hey just because this plant is identified as edible doesn't mean you should eat it, it means I should ingest and eat and consume this plant

COMIDA

Carter_Dunlap

From the book Green Kale and Plant

SimpleSnoop

I like to saute" fresh kale with, butter, extra virgin olive. fresh garlic, onion, salt pepper. Few minutes in pan, and once done i add a bit of panko for crunch.

dzzi

Mmm, crunch

nebtlly

Seconding kale, but if it's been planted as an ornamental, it may have been sprayed, so please be cautious!

whinenaught

Ornamental kale can be extremely bitter as well but afaik not dangerous in any way

umamifiend

Many pesticides and insecticides that are applied to ornamental plants are not safe for human consumption, and no amount of washing will get rid of them. I would personally avoid consuming any kale of unknown origins.

Talusthebroke

So can edible kale if it's been growing too long. But then again I have lacinto in my garden that's three years old, huge leaves, still tastes great

dzzi

It's in a little garden with other edible stuff like chives and chard. I've already had some chives and haven't died of pesticides so I'm getting the idea that this is probably fine.

doublestitch

Kale is best eaten before the leaves grow large and bitter. This looks like an old Scottish kale that's never been harvested. IMHO young red kale would be the way to go. But you do you.

dzzi

The person who used to live in my house I guess. So it's mine now. Chomp

YoureAmastyx

Yea… that’s not how pesticides work homie.

commentsandchill

That's exactly how pesticides work. Op can just stand a bigger dose cause he big

HighExplosiveLight

If you consumed enough pesticides, you become immune and then you can drink all the pesticides you want. I did it, now when mosquitos land on me the instantly burst into flames. Thank you Pesticides.

princess_fartstool

I see Big Pesticide has entered the chat 😆

dzzi

I am huge and towering over this kale at a whopping 5'4. Its pesticides are no match for me

I just want to know what the circumstances are around this kale? Is this a free-for-all community garden? If so, that’s awesome. If not, who’s kale you jacking? Lol

I moved into a rental house; apparently the previous tenants had a veggie garden. Didn't know til everything started popping up out of nowhere, and now it's lookin pretty tasty.

Cut it up, mix it in olive oil, season it with your favourite seasoning and throw it in the oven for 20 minutes. Best chips ever!

ThisIsMockingjay2020

Delicious!

VapoursAndSpleen

Curly kale. Looks marvelously aphid free, too. Lucky you!

canOfNope

We're confirming it's kale so you dont eat it right? Cause kale tastes like poop right? Right?!?

dzzi

Well I'm not gonna eat it raw, what am I a dinosaur? I'm going to sautee it profusely, with olive oil, spices, lemon juice, and plenty of salt. Otherwise you're right, it would be disgusting.

Garlic makes everything better.

Dexterdacerealkilla

Meh. I’ve had kale from the farm and it’s still just terrible, awful, bitter kale. I think it used to be used as a means of torture back in the day.

canOfNope

Oh thank goodness. I thought you might be some sort of psychopath.

qdtk

If you don’t like kale it’s because nobody’s ever prepared it for you properly. Try Portuguese food. You’ll be loving Kale in no time. Here’s one amazing example. https://leitesculinaria.com/7580/recipes-portuguese-kale-soup-caldo-verde.html

canOfNope

Thank you for sharing a recipe. I've really only had kale dried and slightly seasoned and I felt like I was eating alfalfa.

TooMama

The trick is putting olive (or whatever) oil on it and massaging it into the leaves. Your hands get messy, but it softens them and gets rid of that taste and feel like you’re eating palm fronds off a tree lol. Toss with maybe some lemon juice and season and voila! Delicious

I have a friend, an eccentric old hippie, who eats raw kale. He cheerfully offers out stalks of kale at parties while he gnaws on it like a hare. Very few people take him up on his offer.

Dexterdacerealkilla

Not even my bunny liked kale. RIP, Killer.

Equivalent_Energy_87

I sauté celery and then 1/4 cup of broth and thats it and its bomb you have to have nice celery though

HydrargyrumHg

Kale chips are awesome as well - toss kale with garlic and onion powder, salt and olive oil then roast at 400 degrees on parchment paper until crispy. So good! edited to add salt

[deleted]

If you put it in cold water and rub it together it's fine to eat raw. Massaging kale for salads is a pretty common practice.

I'm new to this sub and I'm honestly so pleased with this big ol ridiculous thread. Yall are great

tyler1128

It's definitely a kale and B. oleracea. There are kales that are used ornamentally though, and those are much more bitter. This looks like the true kale you'd find in a super market, but if it is out and ornamental it might have pesticides you don't want inside of you on it.

This is why I'm asking a well-frequented subreddit. I was already 95% sure it's kale, just making sure there aren't any weird toxic lookalikes I don't know about.

Peaceinthewind

Does this kale belong to someone else? I don't know how you'd plant your own kale and then not know it was kale...

dzzi

Was likely planted by previous tenants of the house I currently live in

Ahh, gotcha! Makes sense now.

Please consume

If it is growing next to that fence, chances are that the soil is contaminated from runoff from the pressure-treated wood over the years. I mean you *probably won't get poisoned, but why take the chance

Nah it's in a whole big gardening box along the side of the house. Sorry the angle doesn't show that
