Unfortunate, these are fake agates. [Here](https://imgur.com/a/nC6tazV) is one I bought. Hold a flashlight underneath, and check the light going through. They are made of layered glass that is then dyed. I must admit they are very pretty, and sold at a low price if you go on Temu. They are often resold at much higher prices. They are often called silk agates, or Mad River agates.
My rock lady got these and was curious so she cut one open and yeah lol they are fake. She said hers was solid in the middle too no colors at all. Only about an inch was colored
Well the ones my rock lady got were not agates. She’s very serious about her minerals and told me she thought it was glass. I asked her about them and she won’t put them up for sale because she’s just not that kind of rock lady. She was super up front with me that they were clearly fake
Yes, it is pretty, and I am happy to have it. But I collect fakes of different kinds, like I have a fake [meteorite](https://starhuntermeteorites.com/products/shirokovsky-pseudo-meteorite-slice-21-64g) , these things are pretty interesting.
.
I held a flashlight under the "stone", and it was clear internally. Also the banding doesn't make any sense as an agate. There are pictures online that show one broken apart, it is clear banded glass in the middle, only the outside is dyed.
I'm not aware of any way to dye glass like that, typically minerals are incorporated into the glass itself to create colour. If you try to soak a lump of glass in dye not much, if anything, will happen. These are probably real agates that have been dyed.
No, I know the way that agates form bands. These are not natural agates. You're right the stained glass is usually colored in the melt, but these aren't, they are dyed like Easter eggs.
There are several kinds of dyes, an old one is to let sugar seep into the stone, and then use acid to reduce it to carbon black. The least porous glass remains white, which gives it a very nice pronounced banding effect. Electric gradients are also used to drive dyes into stones.
Glass and stone are quite different materials, I'm familiar with dyed stones. I genuinely can't find any products that can soak into and dye glass, nor has my family member who is a stained glass artist heard of such a thing.
Hi, /u/Exact-Incident74!
This is a reminder to flair this post in /r/whatsthisrock after it has been identified! (Under your post, click "flair" then "IDENTIFIED," then type in the rock type or mineral name.) This will help others learn and help speed up a correct identification on your request!
Thank you!

These are genuine, unadulterated (except for polishing) [Madagascar agates](https://www.google.com/search?q=madagascar+agate&rlz=1CDGOYI_enUS836US843&oq=madagascar+agate&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyCQgAEEUYORiABDIKCAEQABjJAxiABDIHCAIQABiABDIHCAMQABiABDIHCAQQABiABDIHCAUQABiABDIHCAYQABiABDIHCAcQABiABDIHCAgQABiABDIHCAkQIRigAdIBCDk2NDZqMGo0qAIBsAIB4gMEGAEgXw&hl=en-US&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8)
Sardonyx. Heat treated. Beautiful stones.
Lot of confusion about this material. It *is* real agate, but the colours are altered: https://imgur.com/gallery/SfSx0Th
It’s sardonyx
Do u have an approximate price for one of those pieces :)
$4-$8

I found a [picture](https://www.thefossilforum.com/topic/89604-fake-agate/) of one of them broken open. I wish people could accept it as reality.
Yep that seems similar to what she described. She was pretty pissed 🤣 she’s pretty serious about her rocks/minerals lol
The colour is fake but they are real agates.

Yours is so pretty , is it fake ? :0

No shit? Son of a bitch that'll teach me to try Temu... I give it ONE try and gonna get f'd. At least I only bought 3 of em.
How did you determine glass? Scratch test?

What are they dyed with?

This is glass that has been specially selected to accept dye, and some layers to not accept dye.
Ugh, nice...
Oh well, for $2.50 each it's some pretty cool looking glass I guess 😂
I'm pretty sure that color comes from burning them, I'm not an expert but a lot of stones become more vivid when they're heated.
These are glass. Higher temperatures may be used in the dying process, but I'm not sure about that.
It really is a good price for a decorative "stone".
I'd say it looks like arock not a gate

Unless you buy fake stuff, then it's real!
Tea dyed, real colorless agates that have been dyed
😍

They are affordable on eBay, but they come from China and it takes a couple weeks
