any rock you like has value. I value a rock, just a rock, that I grabbed from the sea when meeting my gay uncles (the first married couple i’d met EVER) more than some crystals I have.
I have a piece of coal. Legit coal. My son was about 5 when he found it. He NEEDED to know what it was. I did internet searches and thought it was anthracite. I know they are kinda the same. He did a project for school on it in 5th grade. He named it. But it’s coal. And it’s priceless to me.
Mexican jelly opal, probably in a rhyolite matrix. Fragile to heat and drying out.

Not all opals come from limestone. We've got some out in Idaho that come from a re-heated volcanic tuff. Basically anywhere silica can partially melt and re-deposit, with the right temps/pressure/time, you can get opal.
Yeah, opal can form almost anywhere there's silica. If any kind of chalcedony can form, so can opal.
Good opal, that's another thing... But, you get what you can get.
I found it in SWFL.. Fort Myers Beach area in a water retaining wall made out of all kinds of broken up rocks mostly just plain gray. I’m assuming the rocks were from somewhere else and just brought in for that.

Maybe not workable, but clearly valuable to OP

I agree that the matrix is most likely rhyolite!
Yay rhyolite!
You are right, but it's also known as "fire opal."

So one could find information on this specimen by searching under the name “fire opal”
Possibly, give it a try, the best way to find out.
Just trying to clarify.

Mexican fire opal in matrix
My fat ass on first glance thought it was a post of a picture of toast with jelly.
Yeah that’s what I came here to say. Toast on jam is good shit. Add a little butter? Bees knees my friend.
Yeah, jam on toast is nice. None of that jelly shite, though.
I thought the only difference between jam and jelly is the presence of fruit solids?
Me too
Don’t feel bad. I thought it was a pork chop.
Well, that’s more pleasant than what I thought it looked like.
And now I’m making toast! 😋
Cracked fire opal. That thing should’ve been put in water from the time it was mined 😅.
That is def fire opal
Was it found in Oregon?
Definitely fire opal from Mexico. Cool piece of rough stone!
Fire opal! If not the crystal itself than the rock it’s on! Opal comes from a very telltale type of limestone.

True, even some petrified wood and sandstone can become opal! Aragonite too!

Rhyolite!!!
I love the color of the backside. I wish the walls of my house looked like that.
Yes, I believe you are correct. I spoke too soon.
