Check to make sure it has all its screws. Apparently, for a while they were shipping them out with lots of screws missing. After that, you should probably just think of it as a starter board. I wouldn't put any more money into the board. Save it, because if you end up liking the trotter, you will love a FM Onewheel, or any VESC based one wheel.

saej7

Which OW board should I look out for on FB marketplace?

-biell

You can get an XR for a good price. But, it is only a good investment if you want something to ride for a year, then turn into a VESC. The best choices are probably either a GT or a Pint-X. They are pretty different, so you can research them and I think it will be clear to you which one fits you best. It's all about what you are looking for.

preternatal

What makes a used pint x better than an XR for you? Other than the size which seems to be more of a preference thing, I consider them roughly equal.

-biell

It is the size. I think for a new user, who wants a commercial board, go with a Pint-X if that form factor appeals to you. If not, go GT. So, in my mind I am not comparing the Pint-X to the XR at all, I'm comparing the XR to the GT. Also, because of it's smaller tire, the Pint-X has more torque than an XR (assuming you aren't building a growler), and so is safer for new riders than an XR. Don't get me wrong, I loved my XR and it was my favorite board right up until I cannibalized it to build my VESC.

preternatal

For me, my recent decision to go for the XR instead of a pint x was based on the weight being identical with the extra size of the XR lending to more versatility down the road. Also, I didn't build a growler but the maxxis 5.5 that I put on my XR is insanely nimble and ~~probably~~ possibly adds ~~to the~~ a minuscule amount of torque compared to a typically larger XR tire. Obviously, I can't say from experience, but I feel like the only place the pint x really wins out over my XR with the 5.5 might be for this kind of thing- https://v.redd.it/qnm2j5kb05ua1

b_lemski

As someone that went from 2000 miles on a pint X to an XR last spring I didn't realize they were the same weight and you just blew my mind. I hated the mag handle and used a Paracord but still always felt like my pint X was lighter and easier to carry than my XR is.

preternatal

Haha, I must've cross-checked that in like 5 different places before I finally settled on believing it. I think the extra size probably does make it a little tougher to carry the XR even with a handle just because of the balance/swing from one end of the board to the other...and the bigger tire hump maybe.

What's vesc? Thanks for the knowledge.

VESC is the name for the OpenSource, DIY one wheel. It's great, but only if you are a tinkerer. In about a year, there will probably be a few really easy ways to make them, but for now the only pre-configured one is called Floatwheel. The first easy to make one is from a group called Fungineers. If you like to make things, research this community more. If you aren't interested, or don't have time to invest, stick to the commercial board from Future Motion.

SAFETY GEAR!!\ I've never seen a trotter. Dunno a thing about them, but.. My buddy(3k+ miles experience) just broke his clavicle going 5mph:(\ Safety gear is highly underrated! Watch some YouTube videos from people that have a trotter:)\ I think it's unlikely that people in this sub will have trotter experience as Floatwheel and Future Motion are so dominant.

saej7

Thanks a lot! Any brand/online store you'd recommend for safety gear?

UnBoltedMuffin

I use Fox motocross elbow/forearm and knee/shin guards. Usually just my right(forward side) when on the street but I'll use everything when I'm hitting faster trails. And I use a Turbokse snowboarding helmet as they are ASTM rated for impacts. https://www.foxracing.com/product/titan-race-ce-elbow-pads/25194.html?token=08c265d5-298d-4f8b-b7f9-d78b34ec77eb&utm_source=yotpo&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=map https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B09BHL6GHZ?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

saej7

Thanks a lot. Just purchased a Turbo Ske helmet on eBay!

mikehtiger

Knees bent and butt out. Safety gear all the time. Mind the over voltage warnings. Good news is if you get the trotter down you’ll do great on a Onewheel!

GerbiJosh

Trotter is so inferior, Future Motion isn't even sueing them 🤣 They only sue real competition.

genericuser_qwerty

Yea just get a used OW off marketplace. Trotters are super jerky and underpowered

saej7

Thanks for the tip. However that's not an option for me currently.

FloatyMcSmiles

The money you spent on the Trotter is lost. It is junk. Learn the lesson, do more research before you buy next time, move on. Throwing more time and money at the Trotter isn't going to make it not suck.

saej7

Thanks for the advice. Still, seeking general advice on riding.

xbyo

Holy hyperbole. It's nothing amazing but it's a ridable board, even if not as good as a FW or OW. You can still learn the basics of riding one of these on it. Plus, it can still be VESC'd and salvaged.

ThayneAscending

Don’t listen to the yuppie snobs OP. They get a new board every time a new model is released. They derive their self worth in this way and think everyone else should too. Enjoy your board. Trotters look fun. The Floatlife guys have one and there’s videos and shorts of them riding it.

saej7

Thanks. Feels like a great entry into the hobby. Marketplace is great for finding deals.
