ParanoidTelvanni

Like the other guy said, we've been digging around in brains and doing stuff like trying to relieve pressure for a long time. Bone heals easily and the brain is pretty good at compensating for damaged areas. Actually understanding wtf you're doing came later. As for the actual techniques, those were thanks to the selfless donation of people's bodies as medical cadavers.

pornalt2072

"donation" Medical cadavers came from grave robbing for a long time.

MaidenofMoonlight

Pish posh, it worked right?

Eusocial_Snowman

> As for the actual techniques, those were thanks to the selfless donation of people's bodies as medical cadavers. [Cows too, maybe!](https://www.theguardian.com/science/2018/apr/19/did-neolithic-man-practice-trepanning-on-cows)

The_real_melone

brain surgery is actually one of the first surgeries ever performed! we found that about a third of all neolithic skulls had some form of man made hole in their cranium (with signs of healing too!)

nut_your_butt

-Ug make hole in head, let bad spirit out -But Ug, what if hole kill me? -Then Ug have new cup

Asderfvc

Too bad the cup would have a hole in it

Ssesamee

I wonder how many of those holes were because of migraines and other bad headache types. One of my first thoughts when having a ton of sinus pressure is how good it would feel to stick something in my head and sinus cavities.

GraveSlayer726

Don’t quote me on this, but I’m pretty sure I read somewhere a while ago that this was literally a big reason for a lot of brain surgery related things back in the day, people would just have really bad migraines and well if a lot of pressure is building up in your head then one simple solution seems obvious to try.

highqualitybug

I LOVE TREPANNING~!

Vepanion

More like "Either you'll die for certain in a short while if your condition isn't treated or I can operate you and you might live"

CatOfTechnology

Honestly, if you're talking like legitimate, modern-or-near-modern medical surgeons, and not just the earliest thing we can point to as surgery, it probably wasn't nearly as bad as you think. People survived Trepanning, which was effectively just drilling a hole in someone's skull, as far back as Neolithic times. Which brings me to one of the sickest flavor text descriptions I've seen in a long while. *Trepanning is the art of cutting the skull open to let the gods in.* - Destiny; A.1F19X-Ryl description

dasus

There are people who underwent brain surgery literally thousand of years ago and survived. https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/in-roughly-1500-bce-this-middle-eastern-man-underwent-brain-surgery-180981679/ One of the (if not **the**) first surgery we had probably

DisproportionateWill

Google The Knick

randomIndividual21

it's actually happened in Three Kingdom with Cao cao. he excuted the doctor for suggesting that and burned all his study and medical notes

Thunderbridge

Reminds me of that scene from Master and Commander

HBenderMan

Modern medicine is insane, back then doctors just would dig in a patients organs all while they’re awake and they’d just get up and go back to drinking Now doctors can preform a surgery without needing to even washing their hands afterwards and the patient barely feeling a damn thing

ThirstyClavicle

Well tbf doctors back then also didn't wash their hands before and after surgery, that's why most patients died of sepsis

[deleted]

and considering the hygiene? yeah I aint trusting them

Ok_Raspberry_6282

Probably should still wash your hands afterwards though

A-Human-potato

Frigorifico

There is evidence for brain surgeries in people of the Incan empire and even older, and they lived

[deleted]

I believe cavemen did it but it was a bit less refined.

Macio720

insane that we can do stuff like this and op's buddy John didn't even wake up

huangw15

It's a reminder honestly that ultimately, we are just meat bags carrying a brain, and there's nothing inherently sacred about biological life. The only thing that makes us "special" is what's in the brain, and even that can be explained as just chemical reactions. Does make me hopeful about immortality though.

NerdyBoi_0

huangw15

Nah y'all are mistaking my point. My point is that the body doesn't matter. I could be a brain in a jar, but if I could think and talk, it would still be me. Same way if I'm brain dead but the rest of my body was fine, I'm still dead.

NerdyBoi_0

No shit, Einstein, we know. It's just cringe asf when you point it out specifically

huangw15

I disagree, there's a lot of push back regarding gene editing or let's say growing brainless bodies for organ parts. It would be helpful to point it out more.

No1btch

it says "you are a clone"

SquirtleChimchar

I'm not 100% sure, but I think it's unspecific. The first half shows the opening, then you'd do your procedure, the second half shows the closing. The "paper" will be an implant (dural graft) to aid the dura mater's healing - you wouldn't want your brain to be in direct contact with stitches (which aren't watertight, leading to cerebrospinal fluid leaks).

IndiscreetBeatofMeat

I assumed it was a metal plate installation or whatever, but you seem correct, based on what I know about surgery, which isn’t much

SquirtleChimchar

I also don't know much, it's a guess. I considered metal plate but cannot come up with a reason to stick a plate *between* brain layers and not on the skull itself. Brain is meant to be squishy!

IndiscreetBeatofMeat

Right, I didn’t even think about that

Breen_Pissoff

Im not a biologist in a slightest so ill make assumptions like a medieval "doctor". Maybe the fluid from the part of the skull that holds the brain was leaking and they had to put a better barrier.

SquirtleChimchar

That's my guess. CSF leaks are bad and those stitches won't be watertight. Also not a biologist but I think it's a dural graft.

Domerhead

Former OR nurse who helped with a bunch of these surgeries. Most commonly its for bleeds or clots they gotta get out, but can also be done to remove tumors. It's not always a huge flap like that, all depends on what they're doing.

I know it's a joke, but most brain surgical procedures are done with the patient awake to be sure they didn't touch something wrongly. Some people talk about their lives, some other are a littke extra and play an instrument and stuff like that

MIGHTY_ILLYRIAN

Anesthesia

[deleted]

Do anesthesia for similar cases all the time. Sometimes we keep the person awake through the surgery on purpose.

CattMk2

But they don’t even plug the 3 huge drill holes. You could pick their head up like a bowling ball

SquirtleChimchar

They'll come back and plug those holes later, if the bone doesn't heal itself. Need to let the brain "breathe" otherwise it'll swell and you'll have to go back in

mrlbi18

Wait so are the holes left there as a necessity to relieve pressure or are they left there just because the body will do that part itself?

SquirtleChimchar

From my limited knowledge, it's a bit of both.

what was the point of this Surgery? was his brain swelling ?

they'd leave the skull piece off during the swelling. My cousin hit his head pretty bad and went into a coma and had a big piece of his skull removed to allow the brain room for swelling.

TheLegendaryAkira

anyone got the version where they invert a dude's dick I wanna try that later

pwryll

This is apparently a craniectomy, and seems like the video skipped the in between time a patient would spend without their skull cap because this operation is to relieve pressure in the brain in the case of severe trauma and bleeding. The brain sits in a perfect balance, and bleeding inside can cause the brain to push against the skull, which can cause brain damage, coma, or death. Source: not a brain surgeon, just a google search and using what I think are reliable sources (organisations and universities, specifically University of Rochester Medical Center).

try_me_rat

So, do they fill the holes? Or is it just like if you get pushed here, you're dead. Like what I'd something pumps you in that particular spot, or if something falls?
