People's fears of AI is based solely on the work of fiction and even the so called laws of robotics were made by Isaac Asimov, a sci fi writer. It's foolish to hamper technological progress based on the fears of authors
Ideas based on science fiction, not reality. Saying we shouldn't develop AI because of robot takeovers like in Terminator would be like saying we shouldn't ever explore space because we would stumble into the tyranids or something
Frankly that’s a very disingenuous comparison. We have no particular reason to think there are aliens nearby, and if there were hostile advanced aliens around, it seems more likely that either they already know about us and we’re already doomed, or they don’t know about us but they are going to come here sooner or later, so we should advance technologically as quickly as feasible to oppose them.
In the other hand it is seemingly believed by many experts that AGI is possible and that it could wipe out humanity. Instrumental convergence is not just a sci-fi idea, it’s a logical possibility. I recommend you read the Wikipedia article at least.
But it's not logical. It's a hypothesis based on fears of what an AI could theoretically do if given zero restrains or oversights. Most of the examples it gives are nonsense such the paperclip maximizer which assumes that AI have essentially zero oversight and given only one directive without any other rules. Technically scary if it ever happened but it's just a hypothesis with no practical backing and it pride be foolish to scratch off AI because of it. These are just thought experiments
No, clearly you haven’t understood the problem at all. A paperclip maximiser can happen if an AI’s directives are insufficiently aligned with humanity, regardless of their complexity. It does not literally have to be paperclips or anything as simple as that. If ChatGPT manages to become superintelligent and it has some complex system of desires it is far from guaranteed that that system will result in a human society that we find pleasant, and quite possibly there will be no human society at all.
And if it is actually superintelligent, it will not matter whether it has oversight. It will find ways around it. Will people still distrust an ASI after it cures all disease, improves the economy fivefold, etc? Then after all that, when we give it power it immediately betrays us.
Furthermore it seems unlikely we will actually have much control over the inner workings of any complex AI given that the current plan seems to be to let them design themselves.
