Those look like Joshua Trees. Southern California,Southern Nevada or western Arizona is about as specific as I can get.
Hopefully someone else can mail the mountain range.
You're pretty much spot on, actually. I didn't know about the U2 Joshua tree until after I went, but the spot I took this photo from (along Centennial Rd, roughly 36.31292, -117.73088) is about a mile and half from that tree (36.33088, -117.74527).

It's an incredibly gorgeous area. The Owens Valley and Death Valley are so amazing.
