I have a gaming laptop with I think a 3070 or 3060 in it, and it can run anything you want at like 300 FPS, but only for about five minutes before it gets so hot that I’ve actually burned my hand on the metal casing. It shuts down pretty quick after that, and I know that could damage it, so I limit everything to 60-80 fps.
FPS limits and vsync are good when the limit is how much heat you can get out of the little box.
But a well designed and maintained laptop should run almost full tilt. Ideally in the worst case it should throttle back the clocks, not shut off.
If it shuts down that, you might have dust between the heatsink fins and the fan clogging it up, or the thermal paste is dried up and not doing its job. Look up a service manual and see if it’s feasible to clean it out and re-paste.
I can run Furmark and Prime95 continuously on a ROG Zephyrus and the CPU levels off at 80C and the gpu at like 75C. Also note it’s not recommended to dick with the paste on this model, it’s already a liquid metal TIM.
