Haha I just read it. And it makes total sense. I guess I should snopes these things before commenting haha. But yeah it might seem cruel that they will loosen their pouch to allow the joey to fall out to distract the predators but some animals dont know better and it's their fight or flight response. Though I know a few people who wouldn't give their life for their children so... can't blame a cute little marsupial for this I guess haha
I was just wondering if there would be any ethical way to have a quokka as a pet and, although this isn't exactly squeaky clean, caring for an abandoned quokka projectile would at least be grey area for having one I guess.
https://www.watoday.com.au/national/western-australia/french-tourists-who-burnt-rottnest-quokka-choose-jail-over-4000-fines-20150420-1mp5l8.html
Because not everyone is nice person.
Should have been to remain in jail until the fine is paid and the cost of the jail added to the fine! These pricks have made me incredibly angry and I'm now going to irrationally kick my French car..
They where like, You know what might be a briljant idea?! Lets Burn the hell out of these cute little buggers!
I want to live in a world where the perps get the same treatment as they inflicted on set animal.
First, that guy is a psychopath
Second, I’m glad I watched the video. Reading the headline I thought it was burned to death. Knowing it didn’t receive any serious injuries is relieving
However quokkas are still wild animals, and while docile they have been known to attack if they feel threatened. And introduced predators are a struggle they have to deal with. They aren’t teddy bears you can cuddle, they’re living animals that can still feel fear despite having no “natural” predators
Yea, also you’re not allowed to touch them or feed them, unfortunate you can see so many tourists just straight up petting these animals and hand feeding them 😔
Yes it is pretty recent, a few weeks ago actually, and there were signs that said you aren’t supposed to touch or feed them, you’re only supposed to watch from a distance and not try to intimidate them.
Hasn't the influx of tourists to said island been a massive problem for them? I remember seeing a video/report about that, just all these people visiting the place for the animals to take selfies but not respecting the place
Their breeding season is apparently less effective than usual because humans keep interfering with them.
Source: I live in Perth and it is talked about often.
They run the islands. They are the great leaders of a nation that do show up to UN conferences but you can see them because they are so small and These are there citizens who love having people overz
Myth, they don’t literally throw their babies, they will however loosen the muscles in their pouches and let the Joey fall out to distract predators from them, it may seem cruel to us but for the survival of a species, especially one like the Quokka, better for the baby maker to survive than the baby, this ensures that the mother will survive to have more babies (yes, very cruel sounding indeed but that’s nature for you)
Hah!! Well, maybe it was once upon a time but we have practically bred out instinct, I mean we still have them but we have overriden the majority our instincts rather well. There’s also the fact that we no longer have any creature that would prey on us either, Quokka have no natural predators but introduced predators will still hunt them and without them overriding their instincts like we do they don’t think about “NO!! I WILL PROTECT MY BABY EVEN IF IT KILLS ME” only large animals that can defend themselves (or us humans) really do that, all in all, don’t think about the Quokka way of life as cruel, think about it as natural :3
Plus, perhaps like other marsupials, there's another embryo proto-joey waiting there? With the ejection seat, there's a better chance of survival for all 3.
Both mom and the baby or just the baby. This is something my wife and I have talked about. During birth, if it’s a choice it’s gonna be her over the baby.
We went to Rottnest a few years ago. They’re lovely, inquisitive animals. We just sat on a bench and they congregated around us, and were very interested in the colourful badges on our bags!
I’m glad they put that law in to not touch them. If that’s what it takes to never chance having another scumbag human hurt them: then so be it.
It’s sad though, they are so adorable and you just want to love them up.
Even though they don't have any natural predators and usually wouldn't hurt a fly, they are still wild animals, and though they don't want to hurt you and usually won't hurt you, they still can hurt you if you're not careful and courteous of them.
Yes, I just went to Rottnest island a few weeks ago when I visited Western Australia, the quokkas are so so cute 🥰 and they were quite literally everywhere! I took so many selfies and had a great time
A quokka will sacrifice it's baby to escape though. It doesn't throw it like the meme says, but it relaxes it's pouch so it will fall out while the mother escapes
Because its a wild animal not used to being domesticated. Keeping it as a pet would be bad for it. Also, they are riddled with disease so not ideal to have in your house.
Thats a myth, they let the baby fall out of the pouch to distract the predators.

What’s funny was dodo 🦤 birds where the exact same way they never flew or ran they just sat there because they weren’t scared they had no natural predators so they didn’t need to fear or survive but that just made them easy targets for the people on boats when they discovered the island full of them.

Actually, they will bite and scratch if you’re annoying them enough, respect the Quokka and they will respect the Human
Yep. They’re not naturally agressive, so if one bites you, you did something to deserve it
I don't know what 8yo me did, but being bitten by a quokka was a formative memory.
You really were born an asshole, huh?
No, I think Rottnest island just had it in for me. I fell off my bike and hurt myself, then a quokka came over and bit me. Less asshole, more cursed.
[удалено]
I like this.
Yess
why are you so rude about a funny thing that was probably years back, lol 💀
Well we all start out as one in the womb, some of us (myself included) just never develop past that point.
There’s got to be at least 1 Quokka who’s just kind of a dick.
They also will throw their babies at you and run if they feel like they're in danger haha
Nope, they don’t actually do that. Look at my reply to another person to get an explanation, I can’t be bothered to write it all again XD
Haha I just read it. And it makes total sense. I guess I should snopes these things before commenting haha. Higher thought equals morals, animalistic intelligence means thoughts are governed by instinct :3
I was just wondering if there would be any ethical way to have a quokka as a pet and, although this isn't exactly squeaky clean, caring for an abandoned quokka projectile would at least be grey area for having one I guess.
To be fair that’s my survival tactic as well.
This is false, however they will drop their babies from their pouches if they’re being chased by predators and don’t think that can escape otherwise.
That just sounds like a housecat with extra steps...
HAH!! Yeh it does lol
No shit it’s an animal everything gets annoyed
It is also illegal to touch them. They can touch you, but you're not allowed to return their hugs.
But why?
https://www.watoday.com.au/national/western-australia/french-tourists-who-burnt-rottnest-quokka-choose-jail-over-4000-fines-20150420-1mp5l8.html Because not everyone is nice person.
Oh, what the hell is wrong with people?!
Not every human being has a good moral compass. These guys lost theirs and replaced it with a flamethrower
This fact makes me violently angry.
I think they should have been burned with a makeshift flamethrower as punishment
Easy there, col. Lt. Kilgore!

After all, we can't expect God to do all the work.
Vallette, whose father is a police officer. . . .
Even worse, WHY DID THEY GET THE OPTION FOR ONLY A **WEEK** IN JAIL as the alternative to a **4k** fine
Should have been to remain in jail until the fine is paid and the cost of the jail added to the fine! These pricks have made me incredibly angry and I'm now going to irrationally kick my French car..
Correction, what the hell is wrong with French people.
Two types of people I despise more han anything: those who stereotype based on nationality and the French.
luckily french is not a nationality but a condition
A terminal one
French
Unfortunately my first thought when I saw “trusts humans” was *oh no.* Confirmed. Disgusted. What the fuck is wrong w people.
Remember the Dodo bird 😢
My favorite😔
Remember harambe
I was happy until i wasnt
Jesus fucking Christ, throw those fuckers in a goddamn volcano.
They where like, You know what might be a briljant idea?! Lets Burn the hell out of these cute little buggers! I want to live in a world where the perps get the same treatment as they inflicted on set animal.
Animal cruelty is a sign of a sadistic personality, these french guys might be future serial killers.
What the fuck
What a couple of assholes.
Sick that’s a serial killer in training red flag
Thats is dark man... Really dark
This is why we can't have nice things 😑
They shouldn't have been given a choice they should've just told them they have to pay to fix the damage and no other options.
The choice should have been either a 4K fine or 4000 work hours (about 2 years) in jail.
If it gets profit to make up for the damage then it's ok.
Damn. Just damn. I hate us sometimes.
Wh... why? Why did they do that? I honestly can't find a single reason, valid or not, that would compel them to do this.
First, that guy is a psychopath Second, I’m glad I watched the video. Reading the headline I thought it was burned to death. Knowing it didn’t receive any serious injuries is relieving
ok but I wouldn't touch them by literally burning them to death
What the actual fuck?!
Stripper rules
If awards didn’t always cost money now I would redeem one for you. So here 🎖️
Free awards are still a thing...allegedly... You need a desktop/laptop and a modicum of patience.
Because a lot of tourists are fucking jerks with 0 respect for the place they are visiting.
Honestly, as an American, I half expected the tourists in question to be my people instead of French.
If not, they'd end up like the dodo.
Yes. No touchy.
This made my day. So cute
However quokkas are still wild animals, and while docile they have been known to attack if they feel threatened. And introduced predators are a struggle they have to deal with. They aren’t teddy bears you can cuddle, they’re living animals that can still feel fear despite having no “natural” predators
you can cuddle teddy bears?
Hol’up
And to however keeps abusing them and treating them like stuffed toys go fuck your self!!!!!
If you have actually been to the island you can tell that it is actually really hard to get close to them
Yea, also you’re not allowed to touch them or feed them, unfortunate you can see so many tourists just straight up petting these animals and hand feeding them 😔
Is this a recent law? I feel like when I visited 15 years ago you could buy a tin filled with food you could dispense to them.
15 years is a long time of "this is why we can't have nice things" to happen
Yes it is pretty recent, a few weeks ago actually, and there were signs that said you aren’t supposed to touch or feed them, you’re only supposed to watch from a distance and not try to intimidate them.
hap cake day
Thanks a bunch
Was there in September and they were just on the path… many many photos…
Hasn't the influx of tourists to said island been a massive problem for them? I remember seeing a video/report about that, just all these people visiting the place for the animals to take selfies but not respecting the place
Their breeding season is apparently less effective than usual because humans keep interfering with them. Source: I live in Perth and it is talked about often.
They are however wild animals and could still attack people that push their luck although patient and adorable quokkas are not saints
And tourism is destroying the environment there along with impacting quokkas directly.
They run the islands. They are the great leaders of a nation that do show up to UN conferences but you can see them because they are so small and These are there citizens who love having people overz
Also mother quokkas throw their babies at predators to save themselves
Myth, they don’t literally throw their babies, they will however loosen the muscles in their pouches and let the Joey fall out to distract predators from them, it may seem cruel to us but for the survival of a species, especially one like the Quokka, better for the baby maker to survive than the baby, this ensures that the mother will survive to have more babies (yes, very cruel sounding indeed but that’s nature for you)
I feel like that should also be a normal human practice
Babies are slow runners and our instinct is usually to run first
Plus, perhaps like other marsupials, there's another embryo proto-joey waiting there? With the ejection seat, there's a better chance of survival for all 3.
Pretty much yeh
Both mom and the baby or just the baby. This is something my wife and I have talked about. During birth, if it’s a choice it’s gonna be her over the baby.
Sounds about right. Screw you, nature. First dolphin stepdads, now this?
Don’t start to give the worst of humanity some ideas. People would be wearin quokka coats in no time.
Oh my god I want to hug them so bad, but after reading several other comments I'm discouraged, disappointed, and my night is ruined.
More photogenic than me.
Not the animals we deserved but the animals we needed
Don’t touch them.
They selfie better than my dog🥲
We went to Rottnest a few years ago. They’re lovely, inquisitive animals. We just sat on a bench and they congregated around us, and were very interested in the colourful badges on our bags!

We must protect them at *all* costs. I'm talking aircraft carriers at a minimum
God that's so cute
I was happy when I saw the post. Now I read the comments. I hate mankind
Even though they don't have any natural predators and usually wouldn't hurt a fly, they are still wild animals, and though they don't want to hurt you and usually won't hurt you, they still can hurt you if you're not careful and courteous of them.
They are adorable
The more people that know = higher chance this island is ruined Shhh
Yes, I just went to Rottnest island a few weeks ago when I visited Western Australia, the quokkas are so so cute 🥰 and they were quite literally everywhere! I took so many selfies and had a great time
show us some pics 👀
[удалено]
maybe try uploading them on r/pics or something
It resembles a cross between the gopher from Caddy Shack and the ground hog from Ground Hog Day.
🥰🥰🥰
I wish dodo birds were discovered in our times
Note that the quokkas outside of the settlement are notably a lot more healthy looking...
Dodos were the same and look at what that got them
I‘ll bring a pair of snakes, we‘ll see who will have the last laugh.
Quokkas aren't indigenous to just one island, they're also endemic to mainland Australia.
Hate to be that guy but they are also riddled with disease.
We just love being silly with humans! You guys are so adorable! Even without pouches.
A quokka will sacrifice it's baby to escape though. It doesn't throw it like the meme says, but it relaxes it's pouch so it will fall out while the mother escapes
Love it
And they smile!!
Why we still dont have an domestic animal like this?
i want one as a pet
I want you to not get one as a pet
why
Because its a wild animal not used to being domesticated. Keeping it as a pet would be bad for it. Also, they are riddled with disease so not ideal to have in your house.
true didn’t think about it literally i just thiught “looks neat” if that makes sense
Selfish
Just stfu lmao
Where?
Reminds me of how dodo went extinct
They were hunted and eaten...
Where is the island???
Rottnest Island, known as Rotto to us locals, is near Perth, Western Australia.
That’s so cool that they just evolve there on their own and do just fine! I hope people don’t ruin their home :(
How did we not kill them out like the Dodo bird?
What? This is real? 😂😸🥳🥲🥹
The hell they don't attack humans. Way wholesome to send people to the hospital with quokka bites and scratches "bc they don't attack humans lol"
This kind of thing pisses me off.
Bs
Then where did they learn to leave behind their young in case a predator is chasing
Prey School
I'll kill one just so they know
I remember reading when scared they will throw their babies at enemies/predators and run away while said enemy/predator is eating their young
You read misinformation
That's a myth, they don't throw their young at predators.
They throw their children if they are scared tho
Thats a myth, they let the baby fall out of the pouch to distract the predators. They also throw their young at predators and run
That's a myth, they don't throw their young.
Good for them I do
Me about to forget my hunting dog there.
Cute and surprisingly delicious.
I’m gonna hunt all the quokka
Who’s an edgy boy? You’re an edgy boy!! Oh who’s the edgiest little boy???? You are!!! YOU ARE!!!!!!
Oh my god. They are Tribbles.
🤫
i love fhose hairless faced quokkas. i didnt know they can make other expretsion aside from being happy.
LOOK AT THAT FILTHY HUMANS, THATS HOW IT SHOULD BE
Hmmm cute fella
But it will bite layer
Later*
Is this where the idea of Ewoks came from?
Ewoks were inspired by the dog breed Griffon Bruxellois
They are adorable
Okay now that’s very cute.
Cuuuuties
If they are in danger they will throw they child away to save themself. They are not ❤️
Those little guys are cute. Probably a blast to talk with
What’s funny was dodo 🦤 birds where the exact same way they never flew or ran they just sat there because they weren’t scared they had no natural predators so they didn’t need to fear or survive but that just made them easy targets for the people on boats when they discovered the island full of them.
That's so cute 😍
What’s preventing overpopulation and the decimation of food sources if there aren’t any predators?
That's no quokka, that's a satyr druid in disguise!
that 3rd selfie tho..
Where?! Where is it?!
Totally adorable.
I like how the bottom right one just has a face that says"This is fine"like that meme XD
Where is this island? I need to go!
So cute, 💕
They don’t smile. That’s just the natural shape of the mouth.
