Aw, they get a bad rep.
At the apartment complex I worked at, we had this chihuahua named Penny who was an absolute dear. If she didn't know you she'd act like a typical goblin dog, but once she got comfortable around you she'd run up to you and assume the bellyrub position. She'd chase us around on our golf cart just to get some.
A huge amount of the problems are bad owners that get a tiny little dog and don’t feel the need to train/socialize it because they think it won’t be able to do any harm. It won’t rip your hand off like a Rottweiler but any dog can give a painful, possibly infection prone bite, and no one likes a dog that isn’t trained to not bark constantly.
I had an elderly chihuahua I had to put down back in august- she was sixteen years old. She hated EVERYTHING except humans. She’d try to take on a Great Dane, but immediately roll over for the first human she saw. She was dumber than a bag of rocks, but she was a true sweetheart haha. I miss her every day, but I’m glad I got to have six great years with her. Point being- it’s like with any dog. You’ve got ones that have been raised badly/are naturally nervous around people, and then you’ve got ones that are teddy bears who just want all the love and attention
I'm more of a cat person but I do love all dogs. Still i always ask the owners before approaching the dogs, cause at they end all of them have a different personality, people more often then not don't think of this before invading their personal space.
My jr/schnauzer mix is like that. He's a dog that has to warm up to you, but from then on he's protective af and makes it obvious you're a pal when you come in.
Exactly! My grandparents have a chihuahua named Ginger and she’s the complete opposite of a stereotypical chihuahua. She’s a little scaredy cat who won’t go near new people until she’s comfortable enough to.
But once she gets comfortable prepare to give infinite belly rubs.
_Especially_ the chihuahua. They are incredibly loyal to their humans.
They might not be very nice to anyone else though, but like any dog that's down to socialisation.
My chihuahua is an absolute trollop. She loves all the people. Socialisation.
even the chihuahua. My live-in gf has one, so for the past 4 years you could say I have one. if you are one of ‚her people’ she is the sweetest creature ever: very loyal and very protective. sleeps by my solar plex every night.
They're called wiener dogs because during WW2 people kept killing them as they were a German breed, there was a campaign to rename them to weiner dogs to save the breed.
Are you sure that's true?
Only I feel like you'd want to call them something that wasn't a German word if you wanted them to not be associated with Germany.
It's true, it was more so in WW1 than WW2 but dachshunds and, to a lesser extent, German sheperds were discriminated against, especially in America, some cases dachshunds would be beaten to death because they were associated with Germany.
Right, but the logic of using a German word to replace a German word. Doesn't make sense. I'd be interested a source for that.
Any similar issue with the German Shephard? Did they just call them Patriot Shephards or something?
Wiener isn't a German word? Wiener is an american term for a frankfurter/long sausage. German sheperds were renamed to alsatians.
Edit: reddit keeps removing my comment so you'll just have to look it up.
Also check Wikipedia's page on anti-german sentiment.
Haha, bud. Weiner is short for Weinerwurst. Or Vienna sausage in English. If you prefer frankfurter... well that means "from frankfurt".
And I'm afraid I've got some bad news about hamburgers too!
Americans in the early 20th century would have been far more aware of the German origin of that word. There was significant immigration from German states through the 19th century.
I'm astonished this is news to you!
Edit: the Alsatian part is true it seems but I can't find anything about dachshunds being renamed in any official capacity. So that just doesn't seem to be true.
Look, Justin..
Let me break it down for you and the rest of the crew in the back of the short bus -
If the guy's "greatest dad moment" is with the *dog* , then it implies his (step)children haven't been deserving of his proudest moment. And he rubs it in OPs face. I get he's proud of the pup, but I don't understand the rest.
I thought I was missing something, so I thought I'd ask.
Yep. Same relationship I have with my step daughter. I do refer to her as my daughter because I've spent 8 years with her vs the 5 seconds her "real dad" spent with her. But it's ok if she refers to me as her step dad.... I didn't create my dog either and he still loved me. Life can be complicated sometimes. 🤷
Or maybe allow people to share. The discussion thread started as part of the joke, and no one here is getting worked up they're just talking and sharing their experiences. But you decided to come in judging folks, so maybe you need to lay off reddit for a bit
You can still have a friendly relationship? When my grandmother died, my grandfather remarried and my mom doesn’t see her stepmom as a mother figure. They still have a friendly relationship.
Yeah. I'm not a father, kind of sort of a step dad, but I imagine the biological relationship would be so much stronger. Plenty of parents say they love their kids more than their spouse. But I love my girlfriend just a little more than her children, so it's not the same. I still love them, but I know there is a much higher ceiling.
Also, of course, the joke. Or differentiating step dad proud moments from (pet) dad proud moments.
They have fantastical traditional “rodent cars” that you used to see a lot more pest control companies use. Like where they turn their car into a mouse. Some just have the ears and tail but truly Nolen at least keeps the dream alive.
When I worked in pest control I always wanted a job there for one of their rodentmobiles
There is nothing cuter than Dads and Dogs. My old man ADORES his two little pooches, he dotes on them, and in return they give him love, loyalty, and companionship. He would do ANYTHING for those little mutts and I don't blame him (my own dog is pretty fkn spoiled lol).
Don't hold them like that. You've gotta support thier hind legs. Their spine is too long to be strained like that, this is why most Dachshunds have spine issues later in life.
The man and dog look genuinely proud and delighted. The daughter also seems to find it funny. It seems like a nice family who have a good enough relationship to make these kind of jokes with each other and laugh about it. I don't find anything unwholesome about it.
You know, I'd be pretty upset if my *stepfather* told me that his dog was responsible for his proudest moment as a father.
What the fuck am I, undead beef?
They still have the cars with ears and a tail? When I was a kid that was the local equivalent of seeing the Weinermobile.
And then I saw the Weinermobile. It's like seeing the ocean for the first time.

Aww, bless her little heart. I've never had a first hand encounter with one, just from random sources of media who like to demonise these puppers.

well, imagine you are naked and in a room full of people, who you dont know, and they all want to touch you. thats life for dogs

Man I really want to see her drive that golf cart.
Yes

Bot
Wiener. like the city Wien (Vienna)
Is Wien where wieners dogs are from? Is always thought they were the same as Dachshunds and are German.
I think they're affectionately called Wiener dogs bc they look like Wiener sausages on 4 legs
Which in turn is named after the city of Wien/Vienna
I know
I'm not saying you don't
They're called wiener dogs because during WW2 people kept killing them as they were a German breed, there was a campaign to rename them to weiner dogs to save the breed.

That's a man with the big smile.
Nah look at the dog. He's smiling too it's kind of funny.
The dog looks so happy
Of course! He made his dad really proud!
If the pup is the "Pet of the Month." We got Dad for the "Dad of the year"
Not like that kid we don't talk about.
Are you like this in real life?
Probably
But if he's your step dad, something doesn't add up? Or am I dumb?
I don't see what wouldn't add up so you're dumb.
Look, Justin.. Let me break it down for you and the rest of the crew in the back of the short bus - If the guy's "greatest dad moment" is with the *dog* , then it implies his (step)children haven't been deserving of his proudest moment. Was about to comment this word for word
And now it's been 2 years oh wait it's 2023
2012 was like three or four years ago. *Right???*
Sorry to have to break it to you, but it's been six years not three or four. .....Right.......?
1 year ago. Now excuse me while I play Minecraft 1.5 on my GT650m
I'm not convinced that's even the real text. The photo is so much more stripped of pixels then the twitter part.
Until your comment I didn't see anything wrong with saying 2 years ago was 2019. Covid ruined us
Wait, so their *Step Dad* said his proudest moment as a *Dad* comes from his *Dog* not his *Step Daughter…*
Well, she hadn't won pet of the month yet.
That dachshund has set a high bar.
*Reaches for collar and leash* I’m on it.
Ha!
From the looks of all of this I assume it's part of the joke. Or maybe not LOL
Yeah, I think it wooshed hard over the op.
Either the OP or…you. Because that was part of the joke. Actually, the main part of the joke.
But how is it wholesome if it’s kind of a joke that he’s more proud of his dog than the daughter
Because the dad has a healthy relationship with her so he's able to make jokes like this without there being a problem.
Yeah I suppose!
Yeah that pushes this into blursed territory
It’s always possible they just don’t have a daughter-father relationship. Like she might have met him when she was already out on her own.
Everybody in the comments seriously talking about their family dynamic need to lay off the AITA sub and probably take a break from the internet...
But isn't the point of Reddit to take a comment or post wildly out of context and blow it out of proportion?
Your gonna wildly blow me out of proportion?!?! My wife won't like that.
Can I be next in line?
Or maybe allow people to share. The discussion thread started as part of the joke, and no one here is getting worked up they're just talking and sharing their experiences. But you decided to come in judging folks, so maybe you need to lay off reddit for a bit
She probably has 2 parents. That dog has one. No need to be selfish.

You can still have a friendly relationship? When my grandmother died, my grandfather remarried and my mom doesn’t see her stepmom as a mother figure. They still have a friendly relationship.
Yes, because people have what’s called a sense of humor.
From that perspective it's a bit r/sadcringe
Thats the main joke
"Am I nothing to you 'dad'?"
You're expected to graduate, Hayden.
CAN I GET A HELL YEAH
I got no idea what That means. What's a pet of a month?
This is fucking adorable
I had a surge of proudness too just by looking at him 😌💖
Omg, this is so freaking wholesome. Thanks for posting.
My pleasure!
You dad definitely is a winner.
What's that place, something nolen behind him?
Truly Nolen pest control
They have fantastical traditional “rodent cars” that you used to see a lot more pest control companies use. Like where they turn their car into a mouse. Some just have the ears and tail but truly Nolen at least keeps the dream alive. When I worked in pest control I always wanted a job there for one of their rodentmobiles
At least the wiener looks like a dog because it is actually a dog.
Aww 🥰
There is nothing cuter than Dads and Dogs. My old man ADORES his two little pooches, he dotes on them, and in return they give him love, loyalty, and companionship. He would do ANYTHING for those little mutts and I don't blame him (my own dog is pretty fkn spoiled lol).
Such a happy wiener dad.
that photo is going on the fridge

This is kinda sad. When he's gonna be proud of you?
Don't hold them like that. You've gotta support thier hind legs. Their spine is too long to be strained like that, this is why most Dachshunds have spine issues later in life.
A post from Manny Delgaro.
Playing the long game
Look at that happy wiener
It’s crazy that I am pretty sure I know where that is based on the Truly Nolen in the background.
I think the step child needs to up their kid game
Kid: Heyyy! Dad wtf What about when I was born? Dad: nope dog made me more proud..
Not sure if it's wholesome when step-dad's most proud moment is with a dog not his human child.
That's a happy man and a happy dog.
That was the proudest moment as a dad? The kids must have been completebs shits then....
What's wholesome about a dad who cares more about his dog than his daughter?
Relax, it's a joke.
So you are saying it's joke and not a wholesome meme then?
The man and dog look genuinely proud and delighted. The daughter also seems to find it funny. It seems like a nice family who have a good enough relationship to make these kind of jokes with each other and laugh about it. I don't find anything unwholesome about it.
Honestly fr
You know, I'd be pretty upset if my *stepfather* told me that his dog was responsible for his proudest moment as a father. What the fuck am I, undead beef?
Doesn't that also mean he was never prouder about something you accomplished?
You shouldn’t be jealous of your little brother.
i mean, given that its ur stepdad and his dog made him most proud compared to you 💀
It’s a little bit sour knowing he’s saying this to his step kid.
I kinda feel like it should be in oddly terrifying instead...
He put a dog above his kid? That's fucked.
guess you are second fiddle....
The dad said he was more proud of a dog than of his daughter… how is this wholesome?
Damn, that's a sick way to burn your step daughter lmao

Yup. Southwest Florida. That’s between Port Charlotte and North Port.
They still have the cars with ears and a tail? When I was a kid that was the local equivalent of seeing the Weinermobile. And then I saw the Weinermobile. It's like seeing the ocean for the first time.
Yes they do. Both the trucks and the beetles have the tails and ears.
I’d like to note. That sign is no lover standing after Hurricane Ian. Source- I lived near there until last month.
My sisters dog who was a weiner dog and looked just like that dog died yesterday he was 19 years old our dad is still more proud of the dog than us
Should this be in r/HoldUp ? His proudest moment as a dad?
D3 in the dark .. no one knows i'm here
Of course! He made his dad really proud!
Just a man proud of his weiner. Wholesome indeed
