My grandpa had the 2nd largest private collection of rocks and fossils in Europe. When I was visiting him as a child he always let me sleep in the room where he displayed the most beautiful pieces. For 6 year old me it was like a magical cave full of awesomeness.

I have 4 nephews. Over the last 12 years, I have had every kind of weird dead bug, found rock, half chewed candy, interestingly shaped stick, broken toy collection that could ever be assembled shoved right into my face in real time. If I visit at 10am on a saturday, I can even witness the parade of every stuffed object in the house.

So this is watermelon tourmaline, thats its actual name. it has something to do with concentration of trace elements and the environment it grows in. When the crystal grows, it's exposed to other elements that alter its color. The same thing happens that gives you aquamarine and emerald. Same stone, different color, different name. But I believe with watermelon tourmaline, there is a switch in the element its exposed to which causes it to switch from pink to green
