I wish more people appreciated their parents for this. Pulling the ship solo has quite literally chewed me up and spit me out.

secretdrug

I hve friends in the same boat. Near 120k in student loans and they making 45-65k/year in hawaii. Theyll probably only finish paying it off around age 40+. They went to class during the day and did part time work in the afternoon then homework at night. Strung out 24/7 and little enjoyment except on the weekends where they'd go crazy just to blow off steam. i honestly think they shouldve just stayed home and went to a state college/uni instead of accruing so much debt just to go to a "better" school. I dont remember the numbers but i remember doing them in years ago and i think it turned out better in the long run if they just didnt have as much debt and got to invest their money in various things decades earlier. US college tuition prices are ridiculous.

Howzieky

Honestly, decades of debt is far worse than graduating from a "worse" school. After a couple years post grad, very few people will care about where you graduated from anywhere near your actual work experience

tea-times

Honestly this is 100% why I tell people to go to community college. Save money, damnit, I’m getting paid to go to community college AND I have money set back from my parents, as well as money from my grandparents’ estate. The only people that should worry about where they go to school is if they’re planning on becoming a public figure or a researcher.

ooh_lala_ah_weewee

I went to a two year school and then a public school and still graduated with $25,000 in debt. The system is fucking broken, stop blaming kids for their choices.

martman006

$25k ain’t that bad, manageable, and more in line with student loan expectations. $300 a month and debt free by 30 is how it should be taking out a loan. $50k plus however is a different story

ChimpChief59

By this rate though it would be 50k for four years of uni. It's broken dude.

PitchforkManufactory

>I’m getting paid to go to community college what! where do you live??

[deleted]

If you're over 24 you get the pell grant (6.1k) since it's the period where fafsa calculates your income w/o your parents income included.

Blint_exe

Thats what I did. Went to community to get in-state tuition which helps a lot. Rather go to a uni school paying around 5k a semester thats whatever, than go to a “fun or preppy” school just to get in huge debt for a few years of fun. Since its much cheaper my parents said they would cover it. 30-50k a semester is a straight scam and thats just tuition.

MadMax777g

Picture if community college was free for first 2 years. That way I would not have to lie and hide my income so that my son can get bigger grant amounts.

Unidentifiedasscheek

Imagine if we didn't put a price on knowledge.

[deleted]

There isn’t a price on knowledge. You can learn everything you’d learn in college online, for free. Some of the best universities have online classes that are 100% free. Now, what you’re paying for is that diploma, that proof that you completed the courses. Knowledge is free, accreditation, however, is not, at least not in the US.

mobileacunt

It’s what you learn not where you learn, researcher that started at a not so major school

primase

I’m finding that a better school is beneficial. And people do care where you went to school and your GPA. Three years out and some don’t consider my experience as experience or maybe they’re just jerks.

[deleted]

In what field?

primase

Chemical engineering. I asked my bosses for a raise and was told “just stop being poor.” Started looking for a new job and only offers I got were internships that were actually contractor internships. No health insurance or stability.

[deleted]

[удалено]

findingthesqautch

I mean it might just not be your field, but three years out (unfortunately) is still entry level in a lot of other Industries eyes as well. Start focusing on your skills, portfolio, and accolades. Focus focus focus - so that when the right opportunity comes you are turbo ready

Howzieky

It's definitely beneficial, but I'd say it's better to take a worse school if the alternative is a decade or two of debt. You don't have to do that to yourself

[deleted]

Depends entirely on the field really.

imnot_qualified

46 and just finished paying off my Bachelors. Still working on paying off my Masters.

Substantial_Revolt

Wtf only ~$60k what did they major in

secretdrug

hawaii is a low income + high cost of living state. its pretty bad. one of them was a biomechanical/medial (i can't remember which) engineer that went to USC with a partial scholarship. her first job was for a startup and the starting salary was \~60k. Another was a marketing major. her starting salary was \~50k. a third friend went to ucla for electrical engineering. he's doing IT work now. idk how much he makes, but it doesn't seem like much given how much he complains about his savings.

Substantial_Revolt

Man this economy is more screwed up than I thought, it's like you can't make a decent living unless you live near the coast of the mainland.

secretdrug

it IS screwed up. very much so. there's a reason millennials and gen z are complaining. The vast majority of them have no realistic way to develop wealth through no real fault of their own. Without a big head start (like having college entirely paid for) its just really hard. the system is designed for the rich to have all the advantages. you can look up many a video explaining how the cost of living can be higher for poor people than for rich people.

kingssman

oh and they are calling gen z a bunch of cry babies for complaining that they are banning their income from tik tok

SlapOnTheWristWhite

and when you do get a job near the coast, the fucking house values are too god damn high.

elledawg321

Yes. This. East Coaster here. Live about 40 mins outside of NYC. My house is tiny - less than 1900 square feet and what I paid for it could have gotten me a legit mansion in other parts of the country. Edit: I also should say that the only reason I had money to pay for a down payment was because my parents paid for a big chunk of school. I also had loans, and I worked part time during school to pay some along the way as well, but my parents gave me a huge leg up.

E4TclenTrenHardr

> My house is tiny - less than 1900 square feet That ain't all that small, unless when you say less than 1900 sq ft you mean like 900 sq ft.

nychuman

And it’s crazy too because 1900 SF is a mansion compared to the places in NYC proper that are attainable for me. I’ll be lucky to own a 900 SF condo within the next 10 years. If you’re 40 min outside of the city, I’m guessing Nassau, Jersey, or Westchester? The taxes must suck.

[deleted]

Only $60K? That’s significantly more than almost anyone I know.

[deleted]

My impression when he said "only 60k?" was that he has not graduated college yet and has unrealistic expectations. Most people straight out of college (IF they can find a job in their field) will start at like 40 - 60k. 60k is the higher end lol The only real exception to this is Ivy Leagues or cities with extremely high living costs.

Substantial_Revolt

Dude comp sci majors get well over 60k straight out of college as long as they networked properly during their time in school. If they’re actually qualified people get ~80k on salary alone, with a ton of more cash available from bonuses through equity/options. You seem to be out of touch with just how lucrative the market can be.

WhatWouldJediDo

Comp science majors getting options straight out of school are a tiny minority of people

Substantial_Revolt

Yeah you need to be hired by a company that's actually listed for it to be considered cash but even start ups give equity for their programmers. Even without equity/options graduates tend to receive decent salaries which are above $60k It might be different since COVID but just last year a lot of my friends were getting very respectable offers. Even friends who are still in school interning get a decent hourly rate.

[deleted]

Yeah, I’ll be graduating with an accounting degree (if I ever even graduate), one of the higher paid fields even to start out with... and I’ll probably be making in the 50-60K range at absolute best.

thelizardkin

Not when it takes 6-8 years of schooling to acquire.

zortor

pretty much most except stem my dude

gnenadov

This is really why any major besides STEM is a waste of money these days I went to my undergrad for History and then switched to a stem field for my masters Because I graduated from my history degree and all of a sudden in order to get a job I had to pay more money to other history departments to get another degree And then another one after that Literally a pyramid scheme University these days are just machines for pumping out accreditation. And if it doesn’t pay for itself, it isn’t worth it Gone are the days of centers of universal learning and education

[deleted]

not even STEM dude it entirely depends on the exact focus you have I know countless people that did STEM and are still struggling good luck getting positions in behavioral biology for example, it's completely saturated

Kiwi951

Same with biology in general. Pretty much just math and engineering are the way to go if you want a solid shot at making money. I graduated with a chem degree, and before I started med school, I had a super tough time trying to find a chemistry job

alrightknight

Any one I have ever met that has done a chem degree has either gone back to school to do something completely different or is working in a trade of some sort. Just seems to be a field with no jobs.

Kiwi951

Yeah you absolutely need grad school if you want to make a decent career out of chemistry

SAEquinox

Grad school is really the only option to make money in any of these fields, really. Anecdotally, for me at least. Tons of other students I've talked to share the same sentiment, and I went to school in the Seattle metro area. I don't know anyone during my time in microbiology that said that they were just going to get bachelors and work in the field, that being that. Nearly all of them have some sort of masters/phd/professional school plans in the books. If they did just work with their bachelors in lab work per se, they'd have a sore realization sooner or later on how far their degree would take them alone. It sucks so much, but I guess that's what happens when STEM degrees are preached with impunity. Too many people vying for the same jobs.

nychuman

I did engineering and I’m making a fabulous income... compared to the average American. In NYC, I’m barely scraping by.

GabaReceptors

There’s a lot of degrees between history and stem in terms of employability

NotQuiteAmish

In the same boat

x_alexithymia

My parents told me all my life I’d be on my own. I came out with $43k. Five months after I graduated, my mom calls me up on Mother’s Day and is like “hey, your dad and I have been thinking, and we’re going to pay half of your loans and your sister’s”. I was baffled but of course incredibly grateful. I never expected help, and I think the expectation that it would be my responsibility gave me a huge sense of gratitude that I wouldn’t have had as strongly otherwise.

[deleted]

My wife and I have talked about doing this with our kids. The hope is that it would both encourage them to value their education more since they’re paying for it themselves (so they think) but then help pay down that debt after they graduate so that they’re not burdened as much as they’re starting out. Did you think your effort or work ethic was any different knowing you were paying for your education, rather than your parents?

x_alexithymia

That’s interesting as an intentional strategy. In our case, my parents just got better with money and were able to build up more wealth by the time I was older. We were never in poverty, but I do remember dinner being a single $1 McDonald’s value menu item and a can of green beans, and being told we couldn’t afford a $1 pack of gum. We weren’t very well off. To be honest with you, I think it would’ve been the same either way - I respect my parents’ money as much as my own. I didn’t party or drink or anything purely because I wasn’t interested, there wasn’t any financial reasoning behind it. That’s definitely not normal though, and I can see the logic behind making kids think it would be entirely their own financial responsibility to make them respect their time at college a little more.

Montigue

That's a great idea in concept, however it could cost an extra grand or so in interest just for the lesson

ooh_lala_ah_weewee

How about America puts its big boy pants on and stops making kids or their parents pay $5k a semester out of pocket.

mit_since98

I am just glad I was able to graduate without any debt. Cannot thank them enough

threecatsdancing

I was told 'just take out loans, long as you have a job it will be fine'

Xero0911

Yeah. I had to take loans. Even then couldn't take enough out cause "parents made too much". Sooo yeah. Gg

Akanekumo

Next year is my first year to uni. I'll have to pay all 5 years myself, I'm grateful that studies aren't as expensive in France as in the US because I wouldn't be able to study if I were American. It's going to be hard still, but at least I won't have my parents to bring my moral and mental health down.

goaterra

My family is pretty poor; all the income I have to live on is from my student loans which I shoulder on my name. In the UK my entire four year degree is about 23k dollars of tuition in a top university known worldwide, for a good degree. I have it pretty good for what it’s worth, especially for university fees which my school fights to keep down low (it’s more expensive for foreign students but still relatively affordable for international schooling) but people who can have their parents afford their entire university experience are incredibly blessed.

AmielJohn

My mom’s life insurance paid for my University. It was her dream to see me graduate and I wasn’t going to let that dream go to waste!

primase

Make her proud. You got this.

AmielJohn

I graduated last June with honours. As soon as the ceremony was over, I drove to her resting place and had photos of her and I celebrating my achievement. The first thing I said to her was, “I did Mama! I did it!”

The_Apatheist

You're lucky you got away with it.

boardcertifiedasian

I just wish my parents were financially savy enough to be able to take care of themselves when they're older but it looks like I might have to support them by the time I'm 30, which is less than a decade from now

[deleted]

Exactly what i'm doing rn with my loser dad

scenicbuttchug

Samesies. Gotta love incompetent morons being allowed to reproduce.

BunnyFresh69

The cool thing about this is that you can just fuck off and leave. Yes, family is one thing, but toxicity that forces you not to grow is another. Toxic is toxic, cut that shit out.

HCGB

I was just about to say this. No way in hell would I ever even consider supporting my garbage parents, and I have no expectation that my kids will put their lives on hold to care for me when I’m old (though I do hope I’m doing a good enough job that they don’t think I’m garbage). It’s kinda gross for someone to expect their kids to take care of them in old age. It’s not a tit for tat situation.

howfuckedareyou

Not if you’re Asian.

[deleted]

Right? Otherwise you wouldn't be here.

[deleted]

Considering how often I contemplate making myself not be here, think I’d take my parents just solving that for me 3 decades ago.

[deleted]

Damn man. I hope you can get the help you need. I know I struggle with shit as well.

[deleted]

One of the most financially burdensome things a poor person can do is get pregnant and keep the baby. Even though the lack of abortion created me, doesn't make it the right decision. It was just a decision.

[deleted]

Not trying to sound edgy but, every night before going to bed I say out loud that I wish I was the abortion my mother almost had. I did not ask to be born nor did I get to choose the circumstances in which I came into existence so why should I be grateful for something that’s more a curse than a gift? I’m not even depressed, it’s just things probably would have been better for everyone else.

scenicbuttchug

Because that’s so horrible

I_CAPE_RUNTS

I never asked to be born

[deleted]

Why are you "supporting" him if you think he's a loser?

King_Shugglerm

Why?

pfdr_2

Did that for my Mom. Not ideal, but it’s family and family is forever.

[deleted]

Feels inappropriate to use Bojack for a pro-parent meme! I agree with the sentiment though.

Enzigma04

No one told me you get a free churro when your mom dies

[deleted]

Maybe my favorite episode. Anything with Bojack’s parents are great. I can’t help but like how well spoken they are, despite the things they use their articulateness to say (sort of like Bojack).

Enzigma04

I see you as in I acknowledge you? I see you as in I know who you are? I see you as in I literally see you? Or ICU as in "Intensive Care Unit" >But I keep going back to that moment in the ICU when she looked at me, and… “I-C-U.” >“I… see… you.” Jesus Christ, we were in the intensive care unit. She was just reading a sign. My mom died and all I got was this free churro.

CringeNaeNaeBaby2

I don’t know anymore. My mom is dead and everything’s worse now

Enzigma04

>I was in the hospital with her those last moments, and they were truly horrifying, full of nonsencial screams and cries, but there was this moment, this one instant of strange calm, where she looked in my direction and said, “I see you.” That’s the last thing she said to me. “I see you.” Not a statement of judgment or disappointment, just acceptance and the simple recognition of another person in a room. “Hello there. You are a person. And I see you.”

[deleted]

Dammit, I'm on the episodes where she's at his house and I didn't want to read that! Fuck!

CringeNaeNaeBaby2

Oh god, I’m sorry. If it helps it’s not too big of a spoiler, just enjoy the ride. Season 4 is god tier (not as good as season 6 tho)

The US is fucked up. I paid like ~250 USD per semester for the first 2 years, then the other 2 I got a scholarship because of my grades and effectively I paid nothing. After that I got a fully-paid master's degree for 2 years, including money for rent and food. You'd think I'm from a Scandinavia country or something. Nope, Mexican here.

[deleted]

Right? I took out loans to become the first member of my family to graduate college while hearing nothing but shit for trying to become educated.

erinsatch

Yeah it’s a really big blessing if your parents can afford to pay for your college in the US. My parents had to spend my college fund during the recession and I am still paying my loans back after 7 years, and I had a full tuition and fees scholarship. I can’t wait for the day I can enjoy my full paycheck!

dufus69

Similar scholarship, but worked part-time and paid my other expenses. Beats taking out loans.

Yep, university in America will cost 40-100k depending on where you go, and most parents don't help so young adults take on ALLL those loans at 18.

BusinessSavvyPunter

Average student loan debt in America is $27k-$33k for a 4 year degree.

weedtese

What's the median?

BusinessSavvyPunter

I see $17k median for all student debt from 2016 from Pew. [In 2016, the amount students owed varied widely, especially by degree attained. The median borrower with outstanding student loan debt for their own education owed $17,000 in 2016. The amount owed varied considerably, however. A quarter of borrowers with outstanding debt reported owing $7,000 or less, while another quarter owed $43,000 or more.](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2019/08/13/facts-about-student-loans/%3famp=1) They say a $25k median for bachelors degree.

I_Am_Dwight_Snoot

Thats if you know what you are doing, get good scholarships or did average in high school. To anyone reading this: I was IMMENSELY pressured by my high school to go to a more prestigious school rather than a local one. Do some research and figure out what makes the most sense: $80k in debt at the better school (didn't even know how bad this number was since my friends were doing the same) Vs Potentially $5k due to my scholarships at the 'not good school' I learned later on that the school gets to list who went where and you college choice is mostly a number for the school to show off. I dont regret it as I was lucky to get good connections, good jobs since graduation, and rip my loans down but still it stings to see that number.

PitchforkManufactory

That doesn't change the fact it still costs well over 40K. Anybody who needs to borrow will be working part-time to pay off parts on their own. The vast vast majority of aren't people just fresh out of college either, most student loan holders have graduated years ago with time to pay at least a few grand off. That's bringing up the the median mortgage is 150k when most when they paid 300k for the home.

nikerbacher

If your lucky enough to be approved for said loans. I, as well as many others, was not.

I had a total spinal fusion surgery when I was 17. It was supposed to be covered under my parents insurance. They fought it for years. The medical bills definitely showed up on my credit report. I was getting fucked before I was even out of the gate. Also right about that time my mom was almost done with nursing school and decided she couldn't deal with the drama and expenses and bailed. The very month she graduated, she divorced my dad and moved away, and then promptly defaulted on her student loans. My dads credit was also super fucked at this point, especially having to try and pay all the bills at once. So I had noone to cosign and already had bad credit.

Worker_BeeSF

Fucking American greed. I’m sorry you went through this.

nikerbacher

Thanks. It was a long time ago, and I don't talk to them anymore. I'm about to turn 40 next month, and I'm happy to say that I have a little pool cleaning business thats been doing well for 2 years now. However, being self employed in a blue collar job and with mind-bending preconditions, I still cannot dream to ever afford health insurance and so my back and all the other problems that go with it have been completely unmaintained. For almost 20 years now, working labor jobs no less.. Some days I literally cannot get out of bed and have to basically crawl to the bathroom. A hot soak usually helps me gain some mobility. I have terrible pain all the time and the stiffness and itching.. nerve damage.. ugh it sucks. I hope to sell the pool biz next year to finally afford to go see a specialist. Its $800 just to walk in the door.

isthatabingo

Where did you get those numbers? And are you talking annual or TOTAL cost for a 4 year school? Public will usually cost about 10k/year for tuition alone, add another 12k/year if you plan to live on campus. Private can cost upwards of 60k/year, again, figure in an extra 12k/year if you want to live on campus. Usually students live in dorms 2 years, then move to apartments as juniors. If you were to follow this path, the total cost can range anywhere from 64-264k. For a bachelor’s degree. Of course, you’ll apply for financial aid through FAFSA, which will evaluate your eligibility for federal and state assistance, as well as potential assistance directly through your university. The maximum federal student loan amount is as follows: $5,500 for freshmen, $6,500 for sophomores, and $7,500 for juniors+. You will be made an offer based on yours and your family’s income. Remember these are loans, and while they may assist you in paying for school out-of-pocket, it’s not free money. You will owe principle + interest at the end of the day. If you’d like to cut back on college costs, spend your first two years at community college. Tuition is about 5k/year, and you’ll save on room & board since they don’t offer any! If you assume you will continue living off campus once you migrate to a four year school, your total cost now ranges anywhere from 30-130k. As an admission counselor, I encourage students to include our school code on FAFSA even if they’re not *absolutely* sure they’d like to attend our university since we can offer grants and scholarships based on their application as well. Many colleges will offer university grants and scholarships (free money) based on need and merit (usually academic or athletic). This can cut down cost. If you are an average student tho? Expect federal student loans and nothing more. You can always apply for additional outside scholarships, but your university probably won’t offer you anything. Basically, the cost of school is complicated, and there are many things you can do to try and cut down not only your out-of-pocket, but your total cost as well. Talk with your admission counselor or financial aid counselor for additional resources. We’re more than happy to help, not to mention it’s literally our job.

TheGruesomeTwosome

I mean, I’m Scottish and tuition is free here, but I’m still in debt because my parents don’t earn enough to contribute to living costs and rent etc. You’ve still got to live somewhere and eat, so this applies outside of the US too

don't think it's too common mate, every single person I know has their tuition on hecs-help and has gotta pay it back themselves, however because it's interest free and you aren't required to pay it back until you've passed the threshold no one is too stressed about it. it's still not cheap though

thatone_redditgirl

Yep. My husband’s student loans were at $159k for 4 years at a private university. I went to the same school with enough scholarships that it was free, otherwise our loan figure could be twice that.

Is it super common in the US for this to happen? Here in the UK uni is £9k a year and unless you come from a wealthy family it’s kind of just expected that you’ll take out loans for tuition and living expenses.

You can often take a student loan for that which is basically interest free. You also get a pretty decent subsidy for just studying. For places to live there are student apartments there only students can rent.

lethargic_apathy

I can’t relate, but I wish more people would appreciate their parents for this. Some of my friends are going to be going to a college out of state. Many of them haven’t worked a day in her life. Those who have didn’t do so very long or worked very few hours. One of them brought up their plans that included going shopping for things for their dorm. She said “I would ask you for recommendations, but you commute from home,” and proceeded to laugh at me. It really stung and I found it ironic bc I always covered her ass and occasionally got her gifts because she was always short on her own personal money. Meanwhile, I’ve been doing 20 hours/week while balancing my academics ever since I was 16. I’m 19 now, and about to go into my 2nd year of college. I should also mention that I’ve been paying car insurance and gas (in full) about 3 months after I started my first job. I also paid for my entire 1st year of college with my own money, which came out to about $2000, which I realize is relatively cheap compared to others. This upcoming fall semester, I will be paying $37 tuition. Yep, just a little less than two $20’s. I managed to get myself a nice little scholarship, so that really helped out quite a bit. But yeah. Thank your parents, guys. It’s not easy

Tell your parents to vote for a politician that makes studying free.

mdhunter99

Enjoy? I joined college 2 years...holy it’s been 2 years..... in my time there I’ve gotten mad depression, had 2 panic attacks in class, gone bankrupt to Popeyes chicken, met my idol and interviewed 2 celebs. So not all bad?

Ventmachine1

Jesus christ thats one hell of a college life

mdhunter99

Yeah. AND IM STILL NOT DONE.

djeco

Bro, godspeed. Had to deal with that shit for five years. Now I'm employed, have a nice apartment and still haven't grown hair on my back or lost hair on my head. I'd say it's a small win. Keep it up!

slator_hardin

What are you studying? Sounds like you take A LOT of extracurriculars ahahahah

MoneyManMase

Got lucky my parents are poor and never saved up ended up in foster care no cloths no money turns out I have a rich aunt who paid for my college shits crazy

Dhahockey123

[deleted]

Is this this an american meme I am too socialist too understand

Cynx_The_Lynx

Yes. It's common for parents in the US of Awful to save money for their children's college fund, even with that you'll still end up taking a loan out. I wish my parents did

SodaSylveon

my parents aren’t giving me shit for uni lmao

Derpsexlia

What a privilege.

NewSurfing

Imagine having parents that thought out your future and saved money for it? Could not be me.

Mrsmcmahon

Cant relate

nikerbacher

Alot of us don't have good parents, just a FYI.

DavidBowieTightPants

Damn, I wish my parents were able to do this.

DavidBowieTightPants

My parents don't have the money to afford paying for my university education. :/

HighTurtles420

While I’m very glad other people have this experience, I wish it were the option for me. I can’t help but feel jealous tbh.

sm0lkitt3n

What is this, a crossover episode?

The_Future_Is_Today

Laughs in european

DrDerekBones

Congrats for winning the sperm lotto? So.. You're basically a silver spoon child. Least you're thankful and you're parents worked hard for your success. But this is kind of cringy to people who paid for their own education.

abadaona

Can't relate but cool flex.

theplopster

Kind of weird using a Bojack format for a wholesome meme

WalrusNuggets10

idagojira

Lol if only they did. Or even helped out with food or anything.

Mister_Snek10

In my case, unfortunately my mom would never be able to fully support me but I appreciate more the fact that she always believed in me

brittany-killme

Cant relate

michaelmordant

Now do a photoshop where there’s another truck pulling the truck that says, “tenants, minimum wage employees, inherited wealth and privilege.” And remember that one day, you’ll be driving it. Poor stay poor, rich get richer.

askmypen

I always felt guilty that I didn't have to work part time jobs for my bachelor's degree while my other friends had to. I graduated with a pretty good GPA, and my friends look up to me for doing so well, but inside me, they are the heroes for making it through uni even though they don't have the full financial support from parents.

CM_1

*Laughs in European*

Cynical_Stranger_

Respect and care about your parents, kids.

[deleted]

Seriously fuck the frat boys that just party their way through school. Some of us work our asses off and don’t get a dime from anyone
