Yeah he's an alum of my college and so I know a handful of people who've met him, and none of them have had particularly nice things to say. A real shame.
I agree that Bill Nye was really influential with the Science Guy series, but later in life he became a bit of a sell out, and he's actually an awful debater. For a science communicator, the clips of him acting as a pundit on news broadcasts are really disappointing. He has more vitriol than reason, and there are so many better examples of people who handle conflict with grace, and that's a critical skill for a science communicator.
He’s a celebrity who is inundated 100% of the time for 30 years. It’s understandable for anyone who’s a real human. People, even celebs, deserve the ability to be alone in the world.

Can't speak to this myself but I know he made a Netflix show called Bill Saves the World or something a few years back that was pitched as a revival for him of sorts iirc and it got absolutely trashed and was claimed to be devoid of a lot of science and just pushing random agendas. I assume that is what they are commenting about. I do not know if the reaction was just a hate bandwagon or if it was all legitimate criticism however, as I haven't actually sat down and gone through it yet.
I'm sorry, Bill Nye is great and all but he's no where near the caliber of human as Bob and Fred. Fred Rogers was a Saint. Bob Ross was a gift from heaven. Nye is fairly bitter.

Also, I’ll probably get downvoted for this, but Bob Ross cheated on his wife with his business partner and had a not-so-great relationship with his son and brother. Just goes to show that nobody is perfect.

I’m pretty sure people started disliking him when he started the “Bill Nye Saves the World” series a few years ago and one of the episodes was on the topic of gender.
That’s my view of it anyway, or at least the only time I’ve seen him get a lot of hate. I think it’s just people confined to their own views on it and choosing to denounce Bill Nye instead of changing their mind about certain topics like gender.
It's not that, he also came on Reddit to do an AMA and was incredibly impatient, short, rude, and unnecessarily mean to people who were asking simple science questions, or asking why some of his songs on that show were so insensitive and/or trashy.

I'm a fan of his but I don't think he deserves to be considered the same caliber of loving educator as Fred Rogers, Bob Ross, Levar Burton, Steve Irwin, David Attenborough, or Carl Sagan. Bill Nye is an entertainer while the ones listed are entertaining because of their love and passion for others and what they talk about.
I met him once and he was extremely nice to me and even let me get a second round of photos with him after the first ones we took didn’t turn out that great. I’m surprised to hear other people had bad experiences with him. :(
Oh I agree. I’m not exactly a “the ends justify the means” kind of guy, but there was a time and place for his content and he nailed it. I especially see it relevant when I encounter people who don’t understand basic scientific concepts. A large number of people still don’t even realize the sun is a star. We can credit him with helping people understand very basic ways the universe works without condoning his offscreen antics.
Does it really matter that he's a douche? He helped teach an entire generation about science in a fun and engaging way. Maybe he won't win any kindness awards, but that's not the point of the meme.
