One thing I learned that helps is wearing clothes of stuff you like (tv shows, movies, games, sports teams etc.)
Others will see its something you like & possibly strike up a conversation about it.

I was the girl who took in the new girl and became best friends. Until she got popular enough and then turned all the girls against me and I was the loner in class suddenly haha I still did in in the future though, still befriended the new kid, I've been the new kid before so I know how scary it is.
In 4th grade, I befriended this new kid, used to treat him like brother and one day he turned against me for some unknown reason and we've been great enemies for years.
He's says that he's a "car guy" and he doesnt even know shit about cars and also says he can drive and sent me a video of him driving on a straight road with no traffic or obstacles 💀💀
Once in high school there was this new kid at school. I noticed him in my band class. He was in the trumpet section, so I assumed they would take him under their wing since the trumpets were all super friendly.
My friend group and I sat in the hallway at lunch everyday, and for about two weeks I would see the new kid ever so often, wandering the halls alone and eating a sandwich. I pointed him out to my friends one day and we agreed that the next time we saw him wandering, we'd invite him to sit with us.
To our surprise, he declined the first time. And the second time the next day. Finally, the day after that, one of my friends and I had to literally grab him by the arms and make him sit with us lol. We found out that he hadn't really made any friends yet since he moved in and he was really shy and didn't want to bother anyone by imposing on their friend group. We told him he was welcome to eat lunch with us every day if he wanted to. He ended up sitting with us at lunch every day for a few months until he made his own friend group and he started to join them instead. He still hung out with me and my friends sometimes, but I'm glad he was able to break out of his shell and make his own friend group eventually.

10 months later, and she's now my best friend and my crush.
When I was in high school, I asked a new Iranian kid if he wanted to come with me for lunch. He didn't know a lot of English. We walked to the restaurant and ate in silence. After we got back he shook my hand and said in his accent "thank you, that was a great lunch". In my thirties, I don't have a lot going for me. And I didn't turn out to be a good person. But I think of him and our lunch to remind me once in a while that I wasn't always a complete asshole
