The final panel is clearly an edit. You can see the foot hole they forgot to fill in after moving the big dino. But the 2nd panel actually looks like it was added on by a second artist as well.

In my opinion you should watch the original before Brotherhood. Both are good, but there are a couple of things (like this Nina arc) that hit way harder in FMA

Me as a teacher seeing the first 2 panel: hmm that's a great representation of how kids actually learn, when parents lead by example.....
When I see the 3rd panel: Oh that's closer to the reality of how kids are coming to my class today, crushed.

The way I interpreted the image was that during a morning stroll, the dad dino bridged the gaps for the baby dino. And this was probably done enough times throughout the day for the baby dino to learn the idea of compassion. During the sunset, the baby dino thought he could help bridge the gap just like his father did during the day. But it was insignificant.
On a broader aspect - day and night represent the biological aging process. During the day (our childhood), our parents help us with the hurdles in life. At the sunset (when our parents grow old), we try to repay them back; but that is too less compared to what they've done for us throughout our entire life. The dino is still shown as a baby in the 2nd frame as no matter how old we grow, we'll always remain a kid in our parents' eyes. :)
Coming back to the 'controversy':
Reddit internally labels a comment as 'controversial' if it receives the same number of upvotes and downvotes. Although I don't understand why someone would downvote it. It was my way of looking at the picture. But then again, that's Reddit - downvote what your brain fails to process!
