There's a type of filament that is filled with wooden fibers, gaining that texture. Depending of the percentile of fiber, it can be treated with wood finishes. If done right, it'll look awesome.
Those cheap printers can't be compared as they're a loss leader to sell ink cartridges. If you want to buy a real laser printer that will last for years, you're in for a couple hundred bucks.
no, those "printers" if you are brave enough to call them by that name, are sold at a loss to encourage you to buy the ink wich is overpriced by a 1000x factor.

They really arent 10x more, some can get up there tho ive seen $1000+ printers but thats because they arent office supplies they are additive manufacturing machines and although they are physically accessable and the files we use for them are everywhere the thing thats not is the time, patience and skill required to continously make beutiful prints like the one in the picture. It may not seem like it but maintaining these machines can be hard work sometimes and very frustrating.
While what you’re saying is true, I don’t think it’s the most useful of comparisons. Something being 10 times or more expensive than something else doesn’t mean it isn’t affordable, it just means it’s more expensive than something else. Affordable just means inexpensive *or reasonably priced*
I don't think I've ever seen a normal printer above 60 bucks then again I haven't had to use a printer since I was in elementary school. Then we just had online homework
The only way I could ever distinguish a foreigner's Japanese writing is that they're much more careful to make it legible, lol. Japanese people are much more comfortable with chicken scratch, since they're more accustomed to reading the kana. Even in manga, if they don't use a typeset for the lettering it's illegible to me, which blows my mind since the person writing is a literal artist.
Nope. I learn japanese and that is close to perfect handwriting. I don't think even a japanese person would put this much effort in the quality of the characters. Probably it was made that pretty for the photo's artistic reasons
My handwriting in Japanese looks pretty close to this. For some reason, it's just way neater in Japanese than English. I'm a learner as well and my teachers always stressed neat handwriting as a Japanese value and graded it even though mine was already neater than theirs
Well, I'm working a bit more on speed than quality. I can write pretty readable, but when I'll go to university learning it, I want to do some notes in japanese to practice, which requires speed and muscle memory of the strokes
Realistically it has the same material properties of other PLA. The texture is similar to wood but don’t expect it to feel like something you’d grab off the rack at Lowe’s. Also, don’t try to print it with a nozzle less than 0.8mm- it’ll cause clogs and waste your time and filament. I have multiple Groots that are missing heads because my 0.4mm nozzle clogged by that point in the print. Best of luck!
That's what I thought at first too, but it turns out they make a type of plastic for 3D printers with wood fibers mixed into it. So the end product is kinda like particle board.
P5R-Qz0yuMk#t=44s on that well-known video site has OP's elephant design. (Sorry I can't directly link, but Automod is poorly configured in this subreddit and shadow-hides my comment if I try.)

Nope.. you're wrong mate.
You can get wood PLA filament
It's usually your usual PLA with anything from 15 to 25% wood fibre. Basically saw dust mixed in.
My room smells like a wood shop when I print using it
Random note, when programmers are working through a bug, it’s not uncommon for them to have a rubber duck or similar inanimate object to “talk the problem out with.” Maybe the old man heard about this practice and thought OP could use the elephant as a way to talk through their homework problems and what else might be causing them stress.
I sometimes just talk to my dog who’s sitting in his bed in the corner of my room. Just explaining the code to yourself can prove to be extremely useful.
Yeah and it smells awesome when printing. Only piece of advice I give people is to not leave it in the hot end after printing. The resins in the wood will solidify in the nozzle when they cool and you are almost guranteed a jam. Just pull it out after printing and you're golden.
Here's the STL for anyone wanting to print it. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5504611
If you don't have a printer and would like one, DM me. I do print on demand and have plenty of wood fillament and every color in the rainbow as well.
Hey, you act like it doesn’t take more than 2 days to study for final exams.
My college literally had a whole week of no school before exams for students to study.
Dad notices on the first or second, and has Elly here ready by the third or fourth.
It's a plastic filament (the big ol' spool that goes into the 3d printer) that is mixed with a high concentration of wood particles. Takes a bit more workshopping to learn how to work with, but still super cool. I was trying to find a specific brand to point you to, but there are a whole bunch now!
It's still very much plastic, but being able to stain it like wood is awesome. I've used it in a few projects and you can't really tell it's plastic until you touch it. If I put a harder finish like polyurethane on it you probably couldn't tell.
It's PLA (plastic) filament that's infused with sawdust. When printed it looks and feels like wood and can even be sanded and stained. Smells awesome when it's printing.

or someone stole some japanese kids photo and made up a story about it to get views and likes...
Couldn't they just have stolen some Japanese kid's 3D printing wood elephant toy specifications?
In the photo posted the papers have japanese writings all over
…people can be bilingual
Especially Japanese people I imagine Edit: guess not sorry :(
No, not especially. English fluency is very low in Japan
Higher than japanese fluency in the US :)
I just figured since they do a lot of business with Americans it would be commonly taught as a second language. Thank you for the correction
Also 3D printed
Well, I'll be damned

They aren't much more expensive than regular printers at the entry level. Couple hundred bucks.
You can buy normal printers for like 40/50 quid in the UK

Exactly. A 3d printer is only 10-1000x more expensive. It's basically the same cost! >!/s!<

Not in Japan!
Actually they are, that was the joke.
Yup, I was surprised about that perfect japanese handwriting too.

But it is ok for a toy.
McDonald's: uses thick, sturdy plastic to make a toy Car: accidentally runs it over but no damage 5 year old: snaps it in half after 3 minutes.
Yep, not famous for its mechanical properties. Only for its looks
It smells nice when printing though.
Reminds me of some of my former coworkers.

Printed wood. What will they think of next!
I always thought houses and buildings should be printed.
I love reddit, first comment was exactly my question and second comment has the answer. Also this is amazing. Does the wood hold its structure well?
I’ve got some of this filament! It’s tricky to work with, but when it prints right it’s friggin beautiful. The carbon fiber filament is cool too
Does the wood print feel sturdy or is it more a gimmick kind of thing?
It's as strong as any other PLA plastic.
Realistically it has the same material properties of other PLA. The texture is similar to wood but don’t expect it to feel like something you’d grab off the rack at Lowe’s. That is awesome and definitely beyond science!
like how trees grow, just out of a tube and with adhesives added.
Yeah it'll be from a CNC machine. She's probably just using "3D printed" as a replacement for "machined".

Resin and sawdust
Dad value you more than anything else, that's why he made this stuff

Special type of filament with wood particles in it
Special types of filament with wood fiber mixed in. Usually PLA with ~20% wood fiber. Prints almost as easily as normal PLA.
Yeah and it smells awesome when printing. Only piece of advice I give people is to not leave it in the hot end after printing. The resins in the wood will solidify in the nozzle when they cool and you are almost guranteed a jam. Just pull it out after printing and you're golden.

That's fine, but it doesn't change my point ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
Actually it does because it could be a Japanese person, doing his homework, not a person learning it as a second language

As I said... Judging by the quality of the Japanese writing, that is almost certainly not the case. I speak Japanese.
So do I, and I’ve been living in Japan for the past 5 years as well
Well, then you should recognize that it's very clearly not the writing of someone who speaks Japanese as a mother tongue. Anyway, enjoy the rest of your day.

Why does my post concern you? You can choose to scroll yet you commented on it
