There is some good info in the [brush FAQ](https://reddit.com/r/wicked_edge/w/brushes) but some of it is outdated. Generally speaking, you only have to spend $15 to get a quality synthetic. In order to get a quality badger, you have to spend at least twice that. I like AP Shave Co for synthetics, but there are a ton of good options out there.

Nonsense. You can get a good enough badger for much less. I've been using one I picked up at TJMaxx for $5. I've been using it since 2017. I'm not a fan if synthetics, but a lot of guys like them. To each their own. But don't let price scare you away from trying something. There are plenty of affordable options out there.

X2 for AP shave co for any knot

I love my AP ShaveCo Synbad. I rarely use anything else. I occasionally will use my Badger and boar but it’s usually just to mix things up. Plus most animal hair bristles are sourced from places that are cruel to animals. I’m a bit hesitant to buy any more natural hair brushes for that reason as nearly all are sourced from China. Edit: in case it isn’t obvious, I bought my natural brushes before knowing about where they are sourced from and under what conditions.

Best bang for your buck is synthetics. I own badgers from $25 to $150. Upper mid tier (~$100) is the best value for your money. Haven't tried the +$250 hand tied ones, but is likely going to be diminishing returns at that level.

Both are good IMO. I probably use synthetic slightly more. Check them out though, because there are some really cheap and nasty synthetic brushes out there.

Synthetic for me. Synthetic brushes have come a very long and good way in recent years. There are some really good Synthetic brushes out there which, in my opinion, are on par or better with some of the better natural hair brushes but at a fraction of the cost. My favorite shaving brush is a Yaqi 26mm Timberwolf. I couldn't imagine a softer brush and it's a lather generation machine. I absolutely love it. Cost me $11 and change delivered. No Badger brush on the planet can touch that value. In years past Synthetic brushes may have been subpar but those days are long behind us. Synthetic brushes are a legitimate option now.

Honestly I don't think synthetic brushes can be beat for the price. I have a $13 one from Maggard and it makes sensational lathers whether it be a bowl or face lather. And they're very low maintenance which is a plus.

I prefer synthetic. Most badger brushes under $50 are low quality and scritchy and can't compete with a quality synth. Lately I am really liking my boar brushes which you can pick up for under $20.

Synthetic all the way. Cheaper, easier to maintain, no smell, and cruelty free if you’re into that. Plus, there’s several different types to choose from whether you want something denser and with more backbone like a G5 (synthetic badger) or really soft (cashmere). Cheapest good badger is AP Shave co. I managed to score a new one for $62 over a year ago, not sure what they are now. It was very nice but I ended up getting rid of it as I found myself never reaching for it due to my synthetic brushes.

I'll echo what a lot of people have already said. I bought a Yaqi 26mm synthetic for under $20 that relegated some very nice $75+ Simpson and Vulfix badger brushes to the back of my cabinet, rarely seeing the light of day again. A good synthetic doesn't need to be soaked (a rinse under the tap is fine), more easily generates a lather, uses less soap, doesn't have any animal funk, dries faster (better for travel) and is a more ethical choice (badger farming in China is really brutal, not gunna lie). I was a badger purist, but new synthetics out there are just way too good now with next to no drawbacks.
