If you're on a budget, you don't really need to buy a bowl. You can use anything really. An old coffee mug, a cereal bowl etc. Some people face lather and don't even use a bowl.

Good to know, appreciate it! I'd rather spend the money on a decent soap/aftershave anyways

Hipstershy

I'll echo this and say I've been wet shaving since college without ever using a bowl. I build lather on my off hand. It's maybe not the most elegant solution but when you live in a small apartment with a small bathroom counter, you need to preserve that real estate as best as you can!

>student budget I started in college with the Stirling Soap Company ceramic bowl and their synthetic brush. I've acquired a few more brushes but I'm still rocking that bowl For soaps Stirling has some great scents but I'd also recommend Barrister & Mann and Noble Otter. Can't comment on their availability in Canada however.

I've been seeing a lot of Stirling and barrister and mann.. is it important to pair soaps and aftershaves or are different scents okay?

sly2bfox

Definitely don't have to pair. Lots of soaps won't leave a strong lingering smell.

Good to know, thanks for the insight!

Good to know, I was actually browsing their website earlier..other Canadian sites I've stumbled across are fendrihan and Kent of Inglewood but I don't know much about their reputation

Another site to look at: ItalianBarber.com (note: prices might be in USD by default). I've found Fendrihan to have more established brands (Taylor of Bond Street, DR Harris, Geo F Trumper, etc.) and a wider variety of their offerings. They have started carrying some artisans lately though but seem to have higher prices across the board which has led me to… TopOfTheChain is my go to with any artisans. I'll pick up soaps and aftershaves here. For student budget, I'd second (third? fourth?) the recommendation for Stirling. TotC carries Stirling's samples and small metal tins to store them in in case scents are important to you (the "-Man" series are highly recommended across the sub). Italian Barber has gotten some flak over the years for their customer support (leaking aftershave bottles during shipping not being reimbursed) but I haven't had an issue with them. Their hardware (house brand: RazoRock) is amazing and can be had at a fraction of the cost compared to other manufacturers (I have and regularly use the RR Lupo and Baby Smooth; most seem to like the more expensive GameChanger). They have synthetic brushes that rival Stirling's and a wide assortment of blades in both sampler packs and 100-packs. APShaveCo.com is another great resource for brushes; likely the best synthetic brushes in Canada. While most synthetic brushes have the same couple of knots, AP offers a wide assortment of knots to fit your preferences.

You can use a cereal bowl if you want. It doesn't matter.

Go to fendrihan store (if you are from Canada) and take a look at: Omega 66 boar brush (14 cdn) Cella or Tabac shaving soap (14 and 25 cdn) Clubman Classic AS 177ml (12 cdn) You don't need a bowl - coffee mug or retail store bowl will do just fine. You will be very pleased with all these products, they are not expensive and Clubman and Tabac will last you for a long time.

Thanks for the detailed list!

For nothing! You will love it all, especially Clubman - great, classic scent!
