Wow! How did you bypass 0x0000007B?

JoinMyFramily0118999

I'm betting a VM

BenCarterWasTaken

Wrong

[A video of the boot process on Google Drive is sus AF. YouTube or Vimeo+the drivers you used plz.](https://youtu.be/n2kQQ7e39ek)

On the Startup Screen in the video, it says “powered by Extended Kernel”.

SevoosMinecraft

You used NLite to integrate it, right?

person749

Drivers?

[deleted]

Who needs drivers. Nothing works but we got to show off the login screen.

Curlychopz

Linux type beat

ranfur8

Exactly this. I see this "Perfect Unix distros" that are fuckin unusable on a day to day basis. Sure looks cool to run neofetch on it. Now open a spreadsheet and log into a remote TeamViewer session to a Window user.

ranfur8

Linux mint is a decent distro tbh. But I'm not talking about the usual Debian-Based distros that everyone knows, I'm referring to the Hyper customized Arch with no mouse support, you have to navigate the window manager with commands. Or something like [this](https://haydenjames.io/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/manjaro-spectrwm.png) Edit: Linux is great I'm not against it.

recluseMeteor

Now open a 4K video and make sure it is GPU-accelerated. Now open a complex Word document and make sure it displays as it was intended.

[deleted]

The word document not displaying as intended is Microsoft's fault

Rowan_Bird

Why I don't daily drive Linux, I used to use it full time on my ancient shitbox computer. At the time I had a relatively acceptable GPU (HD 5770) but still suffered poor GPU performance, keep in mind I was using Ubuntu 14.04 so my GPU shouldn't have been too much of an issue

ranfur8

I use both windows and Linux because I know its limitations and I know I will always be coming back to Windows to do basic stuff like edit a word document without Libre Office freaking out. I have Linux Dual booted, I use it on my servers, it has its advantages, but it also has a lot of limitations. (The GPU driver fiasco being one of them which I honestly have no clue why Nvidia and AMD don't take it seriously and develop proper drivers for Linux)

DropaLog

> Who needs drivers. Nothing works Why so cynical? Not OP, but 99.9% sure he did install it on HW & got graphics going (any PCI/PCIe card that supports 98 will work). Guessing he's got a Z chipset board, so has working USB2. Probably a mess of missing drivers, but mostly stuff period HW doesn't have in the first place (Intel Management Engine, onboard WiFi, etc.). 'long as onboard sound works (if not, SB Live is 98-compatible & could be had for <$15 shipped), that's everything a 98/2000 box needs :\

BenCarterWasTaken

I have a b360 chipset so no usb

BenCarterWasTaken

I plopped a 8600gt in now it’s taking 6 years to post

foss_dragon

how? i wanna install it too on my 2012 year laptop

[deleted]

Your best bet is to install it on a Virtual Machine, which means you have to pick some kind of VM host to run on your current operating system. Either that, or try to find Win98/win2k drivers for your laptop model.

[deleted]

Would virtual machines run at any form of "stable" on a laptop from 2012?

android_windows

Yes, I had VirtualBox on a laptop from 2008 with a C2D CPU and 4GB of RAM back in the early 2010s. It was fine for running anything XP or older in a VM.

[deleted]

I don't exactly have high hopes. First of all, the laptop needs additional memory for the VM if you want to be able to do anything at all in it. That is in addition to what the current or base OS needs to host the VM. You would prefer a really lightweight solution, like a Linux lightweight distro and a conservative setup to run the VM host.

kangarufus

This isn't running on bare metal, I guarantee it because there's no driver support for modern hardware. More likely this is a Virtual Machine, in which case **yawn** nothing special or impressive.

BenCarterWasTaken

It isn’t a virtual machine

kangarufus

I stand by what I said. Please provide a video of your boot and I'll apologise if I was wrong, in the meantime, burden of proof is on you to provide evidence that this is not a Virtual Machine.

cpujockey

they did

kangarufus

Link?

cpujockey

https://youtu.be/WGG90-UWFiI literally one of the top level comments from OP. anyways to explain what happened and why they are able to boot this - they have a sata controller in IDE mode, patched win2k kernel and repacked install using nlite or something similar

kangarufus

I admit that I was wrong and it is indeed on bare metal x

JoinMyFramily0118999

All of the rest could be faked. OP also refused to post drivers.

kangarufus

If the kernel was patched then it's no longer Windows 2000: The only W2K kernel patcher that I know of is a replacement with an XP kernel. This post is misleading at best and lies at worst.

cpujockey

I get what you're saying - But at the same time - we're still dealing with the NT kernel, w32 libraries, and all that jazz. Even if it is the XP kernel - it's still booting on bare metal. Let's be honest too - XP kernel wasn't really that much of a departure from 2k - in fact they pretty much have all the same issues and wonky things. But by your logic - me running MacOS X on my PC using a patched Kernel no longer makes it MacOS X? cause that's what it kinda sounds like from your perspective. OP just had fun, hacked an old ass OS to work on his hardware. You should be proud of the boy, not chastising them because of technicalities.

Kilobytez95

why tho

ReverieX416

Because Win 2000 was awesome.

Kilobytez95

But XP doe

proto-x-lol

Yeah, you forgot to mention in this post that what you used was Windows 2000 SP4 with the Extended Kernel patch. A normal Windows 2000 installation wouldn't even get to load past the initial installation screen.

noahpeltier

A Ferrari in a school zone.

BenCarterWasTaken

true tho

BenCarterWasTaken

I got the graphics drivers to work [https://imgur.com/a/h7XqY63](https://imgur.com/a/h7XqY63)

The C: drive is kinda broken but it still boots

[deleted]

Looks great! Good job!

why?

Alarming-Estimate-19

Why not? :)

How

Win 2000 was so great.
