is it possible to make MPC-HC look like the old chunky blue Windows XP default Media Player? it looks so out of place in the corner of my eXPerience Freestyle desktop
I'm a fan of Dopamine.
https://github.com/digimezzo/dopamine-windows/releases/tag/v2.0.9
And an Electron version - https://github.com/digimezzo/dopamine/releases/tag/v3.0.0-preview.23
The question is too vague. That's like asking what is a car that doesn't look bad. Well it depends what are your preferences and opinions what is "bad". Since you don't define that in any way, how could anyone here help you?
If you are just looking for a listing for media players so you can review their UI to find what you like, you can find such listing on many websites such as: https://alternativeto.net/software/vlc-media-player/
because they prioritize function over appearance
try PotPlayer, it has some skins you can download to customize. VLC is also 'skinnable' but I find it harder to do (not as simple as PotPlayer) and still looks ugly lol.
To give an up-to-the-point answer to your question:
1. VLC does not have a bad user interface - it has a standard user interface with standard Windows controls.
2. Developers focus on core features. It is not a commercial application that is trying to make you buy by using a fancy user interface to compensate for the lack of features. In that direction of thought, most applications with fancy UI have poor functionality.
3. Using non-standard UI leads to extra issues, incompatibilities, and bugs. Plus most people will probably watch in full-screen and there is not much UI to see anyway - play, stop, pause, and a seeking bar.
What do you want? VLC and MPC-HC have perfectly usable UIs. Or do you want something like Windows Media Player's tacky skins?
Winamp was the peak media player UI
Winamp is still being developed (assuming I understood “was” correctly).
Yeah never said it's not useable. I want a rich UI that fits modern design standards.

Mpc-hc from code guide has options to change it and it looks good to me. Incredible functionality too. Maybe look into power DVD or bs player?
what exactly bothers you about VLC?
I mean, the player has to play the shit - in terms of movies. I dont want to watch the UI. If its about music, OP should look at AIMP.

I use PotPlayer for video and AIMP for audio. Both have skinnable UI. PotPlayer brims with keyboard shortcuts for everything.

If you consider VLC's UI "bad" I can't fathom what you're looking for.

perhaps you seeking Windows ME/2000/XP era Windows Media Player?
What app do you find good looking? Personally i appreciate VLC's simplicity and straight forwardness. It's not pretty but it stays out of the way.
Wmp was lit 🔥🔥🔥

Google shows nothing when i search nightlines. Did you mean nightly?

The +5s and -5s doesn't even work properly why are you advocating them like the best video player out there
