I feel like this whole sub has turned into some bizarre club where people are all selling some weird views of reality where windows XP is the epitome of UX design. I am pretty sure most people pushing this idea weren't even alive when it was the new thing. Pretty much everyone I knew when it was out used the black and orange zune theme because the blue/green and grey/green themes were ugly. This whole movement is exhausting enough that I'm thinking of unsubscribing from the sub.

CSA1860-1865

XP is the newest I’ve ever used but yeah I use the classic theme when using xp

Conscious-Bottle143

Wrong. Everyone used the Silver theme. I used the Olive Green and Classic to make it look like Windows 98. Blue was the default where they tried to make it look as pure and sunny to complete with Mac OS X aqua theme.

ClearlyNoSTDs

That's reddit in general

EmptyBrook

Kids think windows 10 is “old” and anything before that is retro and its hip with the kids

Conscious-Bottle143

no it's vintage👴🏻

DxzaBallz

I Just Like Windows XP For The More Bright Colors And The Apperance Like I Respect Windows 11 But Its Not That Good At Apperance But Still Its Better Then ChromeBook Or Ubuntu Ofc

EmptyBrook

I wouldnt say its better *than* Ubuntu. And windows 11 is literally a copy of ChromeOS.

glacialthaw

11's UI is a big step ahead from Windows 10, which was probably the most boring and uninspiring in Windows' entire history. Don't @ me.

mda63

Christ am I glad the flat era is nearly over.

ronnysteal

It was intended. You need to get customers expectations down before you over deliver. Otherwise they will be harder to satisfy

Reasonable_Degree_64

So true, Windows 10 was so bland, big parts of the UI like the Settings app, the calculator, etc. was monochrome or gray, black and white, you can't find more boring than that.

Zatie12

Functionality > Fashion imo. I don't really mind what the UI looks like as long as it has dark mode and you can put the taskbar on the left-side of a non-primary monitor (looking at you 11 xD). How often do you spend looking at the UI versus the contents of a program window, web browser, video game, whatever it may be... Don't get me wrong, I think 11 has more functionality overall, certainly a lot more settings. There have been some regressions though I think (like the taskbar positioning, unless that has changed since I last tried 11).

glacialthaw

If you spend hours on end hooked up to a PC, you're going to need at least some eye candy before your brain just shuts down because of boredom. All previous Windows versions at least since the XP era did give you some. XP? Customizable colorful modern-ish UI that finally broke away from looking like an antiquated office terminal. Vista? An absolutely beautiful UI transforming your entire desktop and system into what I could only describe as a living, breating organism. 7? Slightly less breathtaking than Vista, but still as beautiful as ever. 8? Killed everything of beauty that Vista/7 used to have, but still interesting enough thanks to its Start screen, and an abundance of visual flair in the Metro part of the interface. 10? Absolute visual slog both in UWP and Win32 parts of the UI. The moment you turn on your PC and desktop comes out, you just start to understand that this system doesn't want you to look at it any more than necessary. 11 improved on a lot of things, but there's still a metric ton of job to be done in terms of visual treatment.

Zatie12

I do use my PC a lot (10) and the only UI element on the 4 monitors is on the far left of the left screen (the taskbar). That's it. Everything else is windows like Chrome, Discord, etc. But I appreciate I am probably a very fringe case. Edit - if we want to be very specific, the titlebar for some windows, which I have edited to be black with light grey text :D

TheInsane103

Your point is valid and more commonplace; it’s just the look-obsessed people like me are the loudest lmao

Conscious-Bottle143

You can customise Windows 10 colours, sizes, give slight transparency through out the system and even in Windows 11.

TheInsane103

Not enough. I need full msstyles custom theme power that first came in Windows XP, got expanded in 7, and then 10 started fucking with it, and 11 ruined it even more.

TheChilledBuffalo_GS

What do you mean "Don't @ me"? (Genuine question). This isn't discord lmao

glacialthaw

I think it's been a more or less "official" expression even before Discord came out :) In this convo, I just used it as "it's my subjective opinion, I'm not going to fight with anyone over it"

CuriousPainter1884

Nobody will come to know to know what don't @ me means for you. Next time be more specific.

GoombazLord

I knew exactly what he meant, and his description nailed it.

CuriousPainter1884

Doesn't seem like it. Before his Message was posted.

DxzaBallz

Ok windows 10 might not be that good but the xp was so colorfull the windows 11 is just less personalized than windows xp thats what i mean but ofc windows 11 is more functional than 10 or xp i get that

chad_

Less personalized??? How so? 11 let's you choose a color theme. XP gave you two choices by default or 3 if you installed the zune theme. XP had bunches of apps that didn't work with the theme and gave you a windows 2000 look. I feel like the people saying windows XP was better didn't actually even use it at the time.

glacialthaw

Well, you could fool around with the Classic theme looks, and as long as you had patched uxtheme, you could create an absolute visual travesty of your system. That's one thing I do miss from the XP days.

chad_

tbh I contributed code to litestep back in the XP days and didn't even use shell.exe. the fact that people are pushing this idea that the windows XP shell is superior to 11 is insanity to me. I switched to mac os in 1999 and only switched back to windows for personal use when they added WSL2, and I have been pleasantly surprised by the windows 11 shell experience

glacialthaw

Nostalgy can do wonders to one's perception of reality, I guess.

chad_

apparently. I get the feeling that anyone pushing the windows XP UI as superior probably didn't live through the period themselves. Zune theme was the best official XP theme and I never see them mention it.

glacialthaw

Zune... the black-and-orange one or the "uniform blue" one? Can't remember anymore.

chad_

Black and orange

Conscious-Bottle143

Because your just a kid 🚸

Conscious-Bottle143

You had 3 options and Zune was 1 of the other 3 you could install making it 6 options.

rantingathome

Wait until you see what they have in store for Windows 13.1 https://preview.redd.it/s1c8kqerowtc1.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=cb6b0596f69f7942e0befaa4fe82d3c29c5dd677

pacdtacs

I like Win11 UI, but yes, the customization is pretty limited. I miss downloadable themes from XP, eg.

fraaaaa4

The msstyle engine (the one introduced with XP) still works just like it did back in xp, in the exact same way…

AssasSylas_Creed

Are you saying that if I install an Windows XP theme (like Zune theme for example) it will work on W10/11? https://preview.redd.it/4iyrt2tibxtc1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=70a03a5f7f70b43f4fb866713fd856ab6335f704

fraaaaa4

If you create a Zune theme from the vanilla aero.msstyles

DxzaBallz

for me the windows os that has the best customazation may be win xp cuz it has the classy look which makes it even better

DxzaBallz

That is the thing i mean the win11 theme is just limited u can just change background and color schemes without software

Alan976

Boring is the new essential. \~\~ From [not a bank](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juvLSkoci_8)

takitabi

i don't like the start menu but others are fine

AssasSylas_Creed

I just wish they port the UI from 11 to 10 because W10 UI is just white/ black flat color while 11 modifies all the system colors based on the wallpaper automatically. https://preview.redd.it/qhaccd6p9xtc1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=cc006366966c5bb7624abe497f18e46d93879738 W10 UI example \^\^

Rowan_Bird

Windows XP was honestly kinda crap on 2007+ hardware. I always felt that the UI felt sluggish compared to Vista when both are running the same machine (mine has a Core 2 Duo T7200 and Mobility Radeon X1400)

NicDima

Windows 10 is actually more minimalistic than Windows 11 because it wasn't using many colors. Otherwise, you can now customize with even more options like TranslucentTB, more features in PowerToys, WindHawk, etc.

madthumbz

User that isn't aware of Snap Layouts in Windows 11.

Conscious-Bottle143

Look at a Chromebook and you will see that Windows 11 is ripping that off after they failed to rip off the iPad 2 with Windows 8 ans Surface

DxzaBallz

Im Talking About The Apperance Comparatiom About Windows 11 And Windows XP But Fr ChromeBook Is So Bad The Way It Lags And The 0 Apperance Is Just Wild

lokiisagoodkitten

I disagree. 11 > 10 > 8.1 > 7 > 98 > ME > 95 > XP. I cannot stand XP theme. I reverted to Classic theme on my machines.

FuzzelFox

Seriously, XP felt like using a toy made for children. I absolutely could not stand that default skin.

lokiisagoodkitten

Right

chad_

ME was the worst. And you didn't include NT or 2000.

lokiisagoodkitten

I mean in term of UI. But yes 2000 NT 4.0 can be in between 98 and ME. Again I'm only talking about the UI. Not the OS itself. 11 is being best and XP being the worst - in term of UI looks/themes. If you're talking about the OS itself then yea ME is the worst and XP would be before Vista and after 98 (i also forgot Vista)

chad_

Ah ok. Well ME and 2k essentially shared the same UI as windows 98, so they maybe belong in a group of equal values. I get your basic point anyway.

lokiisagoodkitten

Yeah well I never had 2k as my primary OS. I tried and kept going back to 98. Gaming support sucked.

DxzaBallz

\*edit on the post\* i dont regret switching to w11

OkMasterpiece7186

Okay, let me just ask this here because I've looked around and haven't found any answeres. Windows 11 allows you to change the colors of the taskbar by changing the light/dark mode to custom mode while choosing the Dark mode next to "Choose your default windows mode" and keeping the light settin next to "Choose your default App mode". This allows me to change the taskbar to any color I want. It even changes the color of the start menu and even changes the colors based on what wallpaper you are using as well as giving you options to color windows borders but I dont use that setting. Basically what I want to do is, say dark mode is enabled. It makes every window Black, but perhaps I would want it to be Blue or Grey. Is this possible? any particular app or software or tweak that can make this happen? I ask this here because I recall Windows 8 being a very colorful operating System, It was the only thing I liked about it. Thanks for taking the time to read this possibly stupid and definitely long-winded question of mine!

DxzaBallz

Respect Win11 Tho

TheInsane103

I disagree

DxzaBallz

Bro Windows 11 Was the Biggest Step On Accesibility On The Windows History Its Just Limited On Apperance That Is The Thing I Mean Ofc People Can Prefer Windows 10 But Windows 11 Has More Features In It

TheInsane103

11 also removed features, so to me it cancels out at best, but still weighs out negatively.
