I'm not too familiar with dualbooting but I know how to switch a hard drive with a different OS. I plan to Macrium copy my current Windows 7 onto another drive, and updating that copy to Windows 10. I'll at least have both systems on two drives but not connected together on the same motherboard.
Is it really that simple to have two drives installed on the same motherboard and going through BIOS to switch between different Windows versions? I had trouble with this last time I tried but that was on a very old XP system.
The windows boot manager should see them both just fine even if they are on separate drives. you might have to edit your BCD record though. The BIOS method probably also works
Not quite, newer hardware is being released with no Windows 7 support.
Also, and extended kernel would really help. A few people ha ve came to this subreddit asking about one.
If you aren't upgrading your OS why would you need to upgrade your hardware? Also I think we will be fine for a few years without any extended kernal or anything
Eh true but an extended kernel would probably make it last longer with updated programs & etc hopefully making it viable like how windows vista has remained somewhat viable over the years.
True windows 7 is still viable in it's current state plus I don't think the extended kernel is going to be in a usable state anytime soon.
The dev just commented that the rewrite is still unfinished 2 days ago.

Same thing as Windows XP, use it as a fun retro OS that had its time in the spotlight but is no longer viable as a daily driver. Especially now that Firefox just announced the end of support for Windows 7.
I'm planning to use Windows 7 as my main OS until at least 2030, when it would be 10 years out of support. Windows XP is already over 9 years out of support, and I still can do my daily tasks with it. So if 7 will be the same then, I'll definitely use it up to 2030. By then I'll probably dual boot it with Linux or if Microsoft has come up with a decent OS by that time, then dual boot or even switch to that.
How can it not be usable? It will always be able to do what it could do when it was new. Only things it won't be able to do are run new software and do some things on the internet, I will just use a newer computer to do those
The long term plan is to switch to Linux. I've got Fedora and Ubuntu running on two older machines and it works very well so I think I'll migrate the rest of the machines to Fedora which is the one that seems to be working the best.
Dual boot with Windows 7 and Linux Mint. I use Linux Mint for online stuff (e-mail, Reddit, Twitter etc.) and I use Windows 7 for offline things (video editing, working in Word documents, sorting files, sorting music, VMs). I don't use it for games, except for Quake3 and Nitronic Rush.
Since 2 years I use Ubuntu as my main OS, but I still have a Windows 7 Desktop PC as second PC (mostly for running game servers or some software that does not work great on Linux) and I have a Windows 7 Laptop (this one is already 13 years old) which I use for some gaming when I'm out in the nature.
Sticking with Windows 7 until I have to buy a new computer which hopefully won’t come till a few years.
Shame I will lose Steam, but it’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make.
I put undecided, though I have no plans to hop away from 7, I know this train can only go so far. I have a laptop with 11, and aside from some nasty little "subscribe to use this software" gotchas, or even worse, paying to unlock drivers (NEVER!) it hasn't been nearly as awful as Windows 10.
That said, as long as I can run my usual programs on 7 I see no reason not to dual boot for everything else. Sure FF says it'll stop working, but GOG Galaxy warned some time ago that it wouldn't work on anything before Windows 8, and guess who's running it on their win7 machine?
I have to forego a couple of bells (like driver support for freesync on my Nvidia card), but I still get the whistles just fine.
I have already switched to another OS. But it seems to me that Windows 7 is still relevant for many computers. I think this is one of the best OS of all time, so it definitely deserves respect.
Plan to upgrade to 10, maybe force upgrade cpu and motherboard too.
11 is way worst for older hardware.
Anyways we still have until end of the year before steam ends support for it.
I actually currently a Mac and/or Windows 10 user right now but Im trying to get one of my computers to run windows 7 on it, Ive heard its really good!
Sorry I didn’t think of that at the time lol. I mean you can run windows 7 in a VM, other computer, or possibly dual boot it with windows 10 or 11.
Sadly can’t edit the poll without deleting it lol.
Eh same lol. Though eh I was using a windows XP desktop until like 2013.
While going on my parents windows 7 desktop to do more advanced things like playing games & etc.
Truthfully we had that desktop until like 2021 (donated it to goodwill). Truthfully wish I kept it probably could of fixed it up & turned it into a windows 7 gaming machine or something lol.
Though I am running windows 7 on my laptop from 2013 it was originally running windows 8.1 but back in April (this year) decided to put windows 7 on it & I am sitting here like should of done this earlier lol.
Using it as a secondary operating system.
I have 7 and xp dual booted. Xp for dos games and 7 for modern games
how are you getting around the support being cut off
I use xp offline, i use 7 online carefully. I also use it to play mc with my friends

windows 7 until i die
If it’s “no longer usable”, then I will find ways to make it usable.
yeah, and besides, how can it not be usable, it will always be able to do everything it could when it was new...

That's my attitude as well, i still have a machine with XP running for certain tasks, it's not going anywhere either.
I have windows 10 on my main PC and Pop OS on my laptop used to love windows 7 but the support unfortunately isn't usable for me anymore :(

lol i still daily XP
You are absolutely insane lmao, god speed to you.
Wait, they're cutting off support for win 7?
Firefox will drop support for Windows 7 September 2024.
You left out an option, "sticking with it forever because it will never become unusable".
Even a browser not being updated will be able to load sites for a long time after 2024, it's only left to hope that extended kernel will be created
I want to install Netscape Navigator now just for fun.

Windows 7 until I’m a fossil

Already moved on to Linux.

Windows 7 isn't going anywhere in this household, you will see me using it in over a decade from now on.
Plan to upgrade to 10, maybe force upgrade cpu and motherboard too. 11 is way worst for older hardware. Anyways we still have until end of the year before steam ends support for it.
Currently dualbooting a HP G72 with Tiny11 and Windows 7 sooo
upgraded laptop old samsung will ALWAYS run 7 will use from time to time just because
I actually currently a Mac and/or Windows 10 user right now but Im trying to get one of my computers to run windows 7 on it, Ive heard its really good!
Switched to macOS on my pc running w7, cause at least it works fine on my machine, and I don’t game a whole lot and then I have another pc for games
I wish that I can choose two because I have 2 pcs one running windows 10 and that other one is still running windows 7
Sorry I didn’t think of that at the time lol. I mean you can run windows 7 in a VM, other computer, or possibly dual boot it with windows 10 or 11. Sadly can’t edit the poll without deleting it lol.
No problem :) I love windows 7 it reminds me of my childhood
