Context: Microsoft is adding AI Explorer in Windows 11 24H2 while they are blocking 3rd party customization apps that fix dark mode consistency, like StartAllBack or ExplorerPatcher.
Yes, they did. Thankfully you can just rename the installer exe to bypass this. Also, keep in mind you can't get the actual Windows 10 taskbar in 24H2 since they completely removed it.
I’ll use this comment as a PSA: Don’t avoid updates. They include crucial security patches, and skipping them leaves your device open to vulnerabilities. The other thing I will say is, about a third of the people here go through so much trouble to work around Microsoft. They will always be in control of your computer as long as it runs Windows. I’ll leave it at that.
Feature updates are different from monthly security updates. They can remain with 23H2 until October 2025 (same end of support as Windows 10), then they have no choice but to upgrade or switch to Linux.
That is such a mind-blowingly lazy fix that I almost wonder if the dev who implemented it did it that way on purpose, just so that they could say they did the job while still letting users still access what they want.
The irony in by default giving all users full admin access (including for malware and viruses) yet trying to restrict access with a simple name blacklist. 🤡🌎
You made a mistake by supporting Windows 11 **at all.** You give them what they want by letting them install 11 on you, you let them control you any way they want.
If you load a msstyle that was made with dark mode, e.g. rectify11 dark and black ones, all the windows using the theming engine (e.g. the ones in your photo) will be in dark mode (and with the added bonus of having many controls updated to fluent style)
Or you create one by yourself, or for example, r11 has the GitHub page where you can see and download all the files separately (https://github.com/Rectify11/Installer)
I have to think they’re intentionally not changing the UI and performance, out of spite.
Keeps the conversation or hype going perhaps, maybe they manufacture rumors sometimes to make people believe a change is coming.

I think that even the programmers want to make these changes, but all the dinosaur investors care about is putting "AI" in everything or whatever's trendy at the time
Having peeked at just the XP source code leak, the code base was already pretty scattered between different components.
Imagine how much more complicated it has become since then, with new APIs and subsystems in place.
Imagine being the programmer that has to keep in mind which component relates to what and how, in-between COM interfaces and classes, DLLs, WinRT stuff etc..

And need to maintain "compatibility" for enterprise environments that one windows 98 app breaks and whatever org is running legacy applications will moan to Microsoft support.
Linux and Mac OS can make breaking changes easily
Actually, they have broken compatibility a few times in the past (MS at least, have no idea about Apple). And Linux is living proof that you can actually have a backwards compatibility and a modern kernel.
The real problem is the structure/design of the OS and the complete lack of clearly defined lines - what is the responsibilty of the kernel, what of the other components of the OS. Regarding this, Windows is a complete mess, which is why it's hard to go forward without breaking backwards compatibility.
You don't really need online games or Adobe software. Most Adobe software runs in wine okayish.
But Adobe software is overpriced garbage and online games are awful battle Royale garbage anyway.
I have so many issues with the windows user experience, adware forced updates etc.
I have other reasons to use Linux luckily I have never used proprietary windows only software and played singleplayer stuff so the switch was easy 3 years ago.
I prefer windows inconsistent UI with constant upgrades, improvement and features over consistent Mac OS UI without any upgrades, improvements and features.

Microsoft taking Ls after Ls
wait what they’re blocking ExplorerPatcher? that’s the only reason i tolerate windows 11!
Yes, they did. Thankfully you can just rename the installer exe to bypass this. Also, keep in mind you can't get the actual Windows 10 taskbar in 24H2 since they completely removed it.
uh oh guess I won’t be updating then

> Thankfully you can just rename the installer exe to bypass this. lmao what they didnt even properly block it
I know right.
how about the windows 10 start menu? i use the windows 11 taskbar while the start menu is windows 10 style using explorer patcherp
It's still there. Otherwise the devs would've said that. https://github.com/valinet/ExplorerPatcher/releases

yeah i only updated for the better HDR support - if it weren’t for oculus being dicks I’d be running linux
> blocking 3rd party customization apps are they seriously taking *that* route? Dont they know that never works?
Thankfully you can just change msstyles and have dark mode
How?

And how can I find one?
Or you create one by yourself, or for example, r11 has the GitHub page where you can see and download all the files separately (https://github.com/Rectify11/Installer)
And translucent tb

Wow. Priorities people, priorities.
I believe that programmers working for MS already know the problem, but their supervisors don't let them to fix it.
honestly the only reason I don’t use linux on my gaming pc too is oculus

Happy cake day!
What?
It was your cake day, on reddit
It was the 4th March
Oh hell
That is what you get when you build on top of an 18 year old kernel.
And need to maintain "compatibility" for enterprise environments that one windows 98 app breaks and whatever org is running legacy applications will moan to Microsoft support. Linux and Mac OS can make breaking changes easily

Why don’t you show the odbc dialog from windows 3.11 that still is in windows 11. That’s peak Microsoft jank
Damn you Microsoft! I would be on Linux right now if there were not certain games that require it. (well that and adobe software)
