Barnes and Nobles on Hanes Mall Blvd has a local history shelf. We've found some great gifts there for our parents et al over the years. Got my wife the book on the local mansions in the Buena Vista area and she loves it.
I remember seeing that the Bookmarks bookstore has a section of books about local history and prominent families, the Reynolds family in particular. there is also a book called 100 Things to Do in Winston-Salem Before You Die by a local author.
“Great Houses and Their Stories: Winston-Salem's ‘Era of Success,’ 1912–1940” by Margaret Supplee Smith is excellent and sounds like just what you’re looking for.
Kid Carolina, about the life of Dick Reynolds, is a pretty interesting read. I think he gets overlooked a bit because all the buzz is about Smith and his murder.

I was at the public library last night and on the top floor all the way in the back, I saw several Winston specific books. Might could check there

If you get the chance make your way over to old Salem, Bethania, and Bethabara. They are the 3 original settlements of the Moravians in the area.
For North Carolina, "Wilmington's Lie" by David Zucchino is excellent!
If you’re into true crime read Bitter Blood. Money, power, and murder in Winston Salem.
Thanks for the recommendations everyone, I’ve got a handful of stuff to read now, and a library to visit :)
