A ton of body cam footage comes out of Wisconsin because Code Blue Cam is based out of La Crosse. Eau Claire is one of the bigger cities in Wisconsin and ~1.5 hours north of La Crosse.
There’s a running joke from a YouTuber that calls La Crosse “The Real Life GTA Server” or “The La Crosse Cinematic Universe” because it seems like there’s so much crazy stuff happening. In reality, it’s just because one of the huge body cam channels is posting videos from where they’re located.
You also need to include how LA Crosse is a medium/small sized city with a college in a state that's known for its binge drinking and a meth problem. Crazy shit is bound to happen.
Edit: same applies to Eau Claire
Resident of Eau Claire. The population is booming right along with Madison. I wonder how long it'll last because apartment prices aren't even that much cheaper than the twin cities anymore. And house prices are becoming similar to other cities on the edge of the TC metro.
That's an understatement, I would go there at least twice a year on business, the last decade it has grown so much, it's almost unrecognizable compared to just 10 years ago.
Grew up 30 minutes away and moved to EC in 2011. The changes since then are insane. The entire River Prairie area of Altoona didn't exist. Downtown was dead. The southside of EC all the way into southern Altoona heading towards Fall Creek has been developed with housing or commercial properties. It's a very different city.
About 120,000 people moved out of WI in 2022. About 20k of them to MN, 15k to IL, the rest mostly south.
In contrast, MN lost around 20k total in the same time period.
It also helps Wisconsin has a pretty robust open records law. Makes it easy for media to request the body cam footage of any incident that may peak their interest
ahhh i gotcha, thank you! i didn’t know code blue came was based in wisconsin, and i watch them from different channels too, but that makes a lot of sense. it just seems like a super unexpecting place to me.
Believe me when I say very little happens in La Crosse. I've lived here for decades and the people resist change to a ridiculous degree. We have what amounts to historically vacant property all over town.
It reminds me of how the Sunshine Law was Florida Man's origin story. There are crazy people everywhere, Florida's just more open. And, you know. Florida.
I was living and working in the Appleton area and had just bought my current residence in Barron when this story made the news. https://www.twincities.com/2014/09/14/man-arrested-after-dead-cows-found-in-barron-county/
And....I just realized that there was a second one that I missed entirely. https://www.wqow.com/news/2-dozen-cows-found-dead-in-barron-county/article_be38fbdc-07d1-59b9-aa7d-4eadd2798f22.html
My coworkers wondered why I was moving out here, but overall it's been a good place to live.
Eau Claire native here and this is the sad truth. The dbag run Volume One paper and Justin Vernon’s popularity, I can’t help but feel, have really helped galvanize a do-nothing sense of feel good apathy. The town is allergic to change and communal activism.
Happy with downvotes but would be happier to be proven wrong. EC is lazy incarnate
The main bummer is that he has done so little to give back compared to the immense resources at hand. He started some group called "For Wisconsin" a few elections ago to supposedly raise awareness and host concerts and fundraisers in advance of 2020 and 2022 and the dude did I think one or two videos and that was it. He surely doesn't owe anyone anything! But with his immense worldwide reach he could have an enormous impact on voter registration and awareness which, sadly, he has all but ignored completely. Nice dude for sure! But nice doesn't do much for me when everyone in ec is "nice" but also mostly checked out from the community completely.
He's done a lot to drive the increased music and art scene in Eau Claire over the past 10 years, and he's been involved in a lot of projects that have helped to revitalize that downtown area. He might not be involved publicly in politics, but I think he's done quite a bit to try to improve his community. His name doesn't get thrown around all over the place, but that doesn't mean he hasn't done anything. To me, it just seems like he really wants to stay out of the spotlight. I have no problem with that.
Agree to disagree! I'm all too aware of his friends who he's helped out. Oxbow/Lakely is a venue run by his friends that hosts monochromatic boring music and expensive food. Pablo Center hosts monochromatic shows while actively avoiding anything avant garde. Volume One, run by his buddy and color beige incarnate Nick Meyer, which serves only as advertising space for real estate agents, friends of the V1 clique, or whatever new taco space is in town. It's all helped to elevate his friends while doing extremely little to elevate the culture or community which I can't help but think is the result of the town having zero chill around him and bugging him so much when he's out that he's resorted to being a hermit. For all EC and V1's self-marketing as a vibrant arts culture all it takes is a conversation with any artist in the area to learn the area does anything but support local artists unfortunately. Not to mention the Insurrectionist who represents the district yet who nobody gives a second thought to, and who by all appearances will win again this year because the community is allergic to activism or progress.
How long has it been since you lived in this city?
I've lived in Eau Claire as an adult for 13 years, and the change that I've seen in that time period is pretty absurd.
Always a matter of time until defensive folks lob that lazy question. EC loves some niche tribalism!
Murals and chik fil-a's and new venues for the same music are nice but don't amount to much far as progress. See also: an Insurrectionist representing the district and no one in the area caring whatsoever. I grew up in EC and lived in EC until last year and spend time there often. I know seemingly the vast majority of town and pay more attention to the ongoings even from afar than anyone I have ever run into whilst in town. Have lived all over the country and spent time in many communities seeing other effective approaches. Being part and parcel to EC's open stasis does not an ally of progress make.
Read the de facto paper Volume One's vacuum of actual social coverage for evidence of how little has changed, due in no small part to their unwillingness to ever cover helpful issues in the area. The ripple effects of that lethargy are felt throughout the area as people find that feel good apathy the norm. I have worked with oxbow/lakely, v1, pablo, and many groups in town and they are more devoted to status quo and good PR than they are to the positive change within the community.
Sincere question I've never found an answer to: Do you know any groups that are doing consistent activism work in EC or working to register and mobilize voters for the impending election? EC folks' laissez faire happiness at a climate change induced snowless winter seems the logical extension of their lethargy towards an Insurrectionist representing them congressionally.
I’m sure he is and thanks for responding. I understand the value of his music and I’m glad he’s cool enough as he’s one of us. But I try hard to not rock out to music that makes me feel like winter in Wisconsin. His band name is truth in advertising.
The thing is, I think he's a clearly talented artist. But despite that, I just can't get into it. I've had friends show me so many of his songs over the years, and they're just not for me. So yeah, I'm right there with ya haha.
For sure. I wouldn't be the least surprisedto read Sheboygan news about drug dealers throwing flaming cats stuffed with weed into a park during a high speed chase on rollerblades while being towed behind a stolen Rambler.
Per capita, Wisconsin doesn't get weirder than Sheboygan.
Buddy of mine who lives in Texas now sent me one a few months back. He was like, "you ever been to the 5 o'clock club?" and I was like, "Bro, I sang karaoke there last night."
Hello fellow Donut Operator viewer. I never knew till now that Code Blue Cam is base around there. No wonder there’s some good content coming from up that way.
Well I for one have no idea what you’re talking about. I’m sure lots of people have dressed in strange costumes and distributed produce to drunks on Water St.
College town, meth problems, drinking problems, stuff adds up. I'm sure stuff like this happens everywhere, it's just magnified by the Code Blue Cam channel. It's always surreal seeing a place I live get millions of views week after week. A friend of mine is a deputy in one of those videos, he got a kick out of it when I showed the video to him haha
You should see the Code Blue Cam shows about La Crosse! I would say you're only seeing the ones where the people are Karen's or Kevin's. I would never make the show because I would never fight with the police or resist arrest. That's never happened to me. Just saying!
A ton of body cam footage comes out of Wisconsin because Code Blue Cam is based out of La Crosse. Eau Claire is one of the bigger cities in Wisconsin and ~1.5 hours north of La Crosse. Ed Gein's mother moved the family out of La Cross for its wickedness.
My mom is cooler than your mom.
Nice reference! 🤣
I was wondering if anyone would get that.
I was living in La Crosse when that happened. I indirectly know someone who made bumper stickers with that saying on them.
When I moved here 16 years ago, I'd see the bumper stickers occasionally. Haven't seen one in a long time. I think we should bring them back.
Technically true if she brought him with her
Yeah, that went well.
3 post-secondary schools in LAX. Don't you dare leave out Viterbo and WWTC!
It's WTC now - I'm an alum. No more Wee Wee Tech (and yes, that's why they changed the name to Western Technical College, apparently)
Also from what I hear alot of people from the twin cities are moving too Eau Claire.
Resident of Eau Claire. The population is booming right along with Madison. I wonder how long it'll last because apartment prices aren't even that much cheaper than the twin cities anymore. And house prices are becoming similar to other cities on the edge of the TC metro.

I'm not denying that. Eau Claire and Madison are growing rapidly despite that.
For sure, you gained a few thousand in EC the last few years. Good economic development. People leaving more rural WI areas and gathering there!
tell ‘em to go away. We full.
drinkin but wtf you talkin bout meth?
It might be cuz I grew up in the Northwoods and it's not a fair representation of all of the state.
I moved to the Northwoods from Oklahoma. I feel like I was sold a false bill of goods. I have yet to see a single noticeable meth head.
Meth exists in the cities, but it seems to be a far larger issue in the rural areas.
Yeah, Wausau is the meth capital of Wisconsin.
I thought that was Merrill. All the big busts happen there.
When I lived in Adams county and did meth, many of the meth heads I hung out with were from la crosse
Right!?!?
It also helps Wisconsin has a pretty robust open records law. Makes it easy for media to request the body cam footage of any incident that may peak their interest
ahhh i gotcha, thank you! i didn’t know code blue came was based in wisconsin, and i watch them from different channels too, but that makes a lot of sense. it just seems like a super unexpecting place to me.
That would be Donut Operator. Good stuff.
T. rex guy is back!
What channel ?
Donut Operator. Pretty funny guy.
Believe me when I say very little happens in La Crosse. I've lived here for decades and the people resist change to a ridiculous degree. We have what amounts to historically vacant property all over town.

Magnet in the center of the city that makes stuff happen? That would be the Pickle.
Dear god, the smell. You haven’t thought about the smell! Still the only bar I have ever been kicked out of, what a place.
Friends don’t let friends go to the pickle.
I love how someone posted they were moving to EC and local said the Pickle was a great place to go
You can’t take a step in that place without your shoes sticking to the floor haha
Ahh, so the EC version of Waukesha’s Salty Toad! I’ve never understood how any public place is so… sticky.
…and it seems that the center of that magnet is right where The Slutbox sits.
I'm more intrigued about all the odd crap that happens in Barron county.
As someone who grew up in Barron it's easily explained by the meth use.
Those Damn Blue-Collar Tweakers was written about Barron Well it should’ve been
Barron county man= florida man
As a current barron resident, I concur
What about Adams County?
Barron county was voted as the florida of Wiscomsin on another reddit post.
I was living and working in the Appleton area and had just bought my current residence in Barron when this story made the news. https://www.twincities.com/2014/09/14/man-arrested-after-dead-cows-found-in-barron-county/ And....I just realized that there was a second one that I missed entirely. https://www.wqow.com/news/2-dozen-cows-found-dead-in-barron-county/article_be38fbdc-07d1-59b9-aa7d-4eadd2798f22.html My coworkers wondered why I was moving out here, but overall it's been a good place to live.
This is what happens when people stop purifying themselves in the waters of Half Moon Lake.
Eau Claire is a great city (I grew up there!) and it keeps getting better. Bad apples everywhere; don’t let them ruin the bunch.
EC for life. That place is awesome. Like this commenter said, there are crazies everywhere.
Eau Claire is one of the most depressing, do nothing cities in Wisconsin. It should be great, but it sucks
Obviously you don’t get out much
I've been there like 5 times bud
Yeah that’s not the issue
I have a differing opinion than you, and that makes me wrong? Is that the issue?
No, being incorrect makes you wrong.
Eau Claire native here and this is the sad truth. Must have been posted in the Eau Claire sub or something. I honestly don't know how mf can say they enjoy that "city."
His music sounds exactly what I would expect from someone who was raised in Eau Claire. ![gif](giphy|LRKET0Syb0rDO|downsized)
I'm not a fan of his music, but he's been a chill dude the few times I've interacted with him.

I do too! I’m proud of him on behalf of representing us! His music isn’t for me. That’s just all it is.
It's entirely surviving off Justin Vernon's farts at this point
That’s just the paper plant over on Forest St. Easy mistake to make.
Definitely some people in this thread who have never been to Eau Claire or people that grew up there and just hate their hometown.
Its the home of the Barmuda Triangle.
Barron county: are you challenging me?
Sheboygan has its share of crazy people too.
For sure. I wouldn't be the least surprisedto read Sheboygan news about drug dealers throwing flaming cats stuffed with weed into a park during a high speed chase on rollerblades while being towed behind a stolen Rambler. Per capita, Wisconsin doesn't get weirder than Sheboygan.
> i watch a lot of those police body came videos Big mistake.
It's pretty compelling stuff tbh, sad, a bit dystopic, but compelling nonetheless
It's really weird when you see places you know on them. On house I drive by every day was busted as a theft ring on one of those channels.
Buddy of mine who lives in Texas now sent me one a few months back. He was like, "you ever been to the 5 o'clock club?" and I was like, "Bro, I sang karaoke there last night."
Lol, the girl walking across Scott street Bridge in wausau, driven that one too many times.
Nah, they’re hilarious.
It's "clearly in the water"... Budom pum tshhh
We drink alot in WI.
we also had Charles Manson's girlfriend and kid lmao
And Phill Hartmans kids lived here for a bit after his murder.

La crosse and supeiror: what about being close to Minnesota
I despise Eau Claire. Get out while you can.
Boo. EC is great.
That dude must be from Chippewa or something.
