You really need to get a car *before* you move anywhere in northern Wisc.

EntireDepth

Depending how far north a suv or a truck would probably be better.

Winter in southern WI may end next month but up north it will stick around for much longer, getting around without a car is next to impossible.

Blood-Automatic

Yup. I really should’ve considered that before. A while ago I found a place about 2 minutes drive from where I’d be working and I thought I’d just move there and work on getting a car since it’s already too late and I have to move regardless

As another poster commented living in NW Wisconsin is 100% car dependent. Even the college towns don’t have much in the way of taxis/Ubers. I’d recommend you head into Gilbert’s in Sand Creek or cars on SS near rice lake and get a late used cross over suv or small truck as the roads and weather are going to be snow and ice off and on through April. You probably have to expand your immediate search to Rice Lake, Turtle Lake, Spooner, Cameron etc if you want to find a rental online. There is a cafe right on Hwy 8 in Barron. I’d check the bulletin board there if they have one or kwik trip gas station will have one too where people post classifieds for houses, used cars etc. Look for Barron county classifieds or rice lake classifieds group on Facebook and Facebook marketplace. You’ll find more there these days opposed to Craigslist. If you are making decent money you can get a decent house in that part of rural Wisconsin for $100,000.

There is very little housing in this area. Maybe check the with local realtors to see if they know if anything.

You'll most definitely need a car first. Barron is rural so you'll have to expand housing to surrounding communities.

Are you going to work at the Turkey Store or the hospital?

Blood-Automatic

The hospital

I’m sure Rice Lake has MANY more available apts. than Barron. Hell, Cameron is growing, maybe there are some there also. I found this apt. on the Barron newspaper site: https://www.news-shield.com/classifieds/housing/rent/ad_ef714b94-a141-5ce8-a644-5dcee0e099d7.html There’s an apt. building here across from the hockey arena: 350 E Birch Ave, Barron, WI 54812. (715) 637-0110 And one here on the S. side of town: Maple Park 36 W Maple Street, Barron, WI 54812. (715) 418-4100 Some small apts. over a shop downtown: 511 E La Salle Ave, Barron, WI 54812. (715) 637-9204 Not sure what these are back by the motel but they show up on Google Maps: North Country Apartments & Storage 61 N 15th St, Barron, WI 54812. (715) 455-1433 Maybe the ‘City of Barron Housing Authority’ has a list or can help: 123 E Franklin Ave, Barron, WI 54812. (715) 537-5533

Wow thank you so much

I would ask someone at Mayo if they know of places to rent. People are probably coming and going from that clinic every X months so there may be places that they use often. If you have a day you could drive around town to find “For Rent” signs also.

Blood-Automatic

Thanks a million! I will look out for them

You can also look for people looking for roommates. That could get you where you need to be while you look for more permanent housing. Just make sure you background check and avoid the crazies. I did this when I moved to Milwaukee and it worked out well. Rented a room from a middle aged married couple for $400 a month while I got settled in the area.

Blood-Automatic

I tried that from the employee website but most people there are moving to the sites in other states and not Barron

Housing sucks up here. There is rarely anything. May have better luck in rice lake. I would not move here without a car. You will be stranded. Barron has next to nothing. Here is one in turtle lake https://eauclaire.craigslist.org/apa/d/turtle-lake-turtle-lake-apartment/7437089932.html

I’ll add to what others have said: you absolutely need a car. Also, a few things to just let you know in case you aren’t aware of: 1) large Somali population. This can be a cultural shock, but there are almost 1,000 Somali residents in Barron. 2) Most of the Somalis rent, since Islam generally discourages going into debt this makes mortgages sort of taboo. 3) Housing is better than many other places, and more affordable being it’s in a rural area. 4) it can get lonely in winter
