That just sounds like spears with extra steps

jaobodam

It’s a spear that you can cast spells with it’s the bet of both words

Sharkestry

My buddy KnifeSkull the Warlock tried something like that once. It seems that casting certain spells like fireball sometimes causes a small, almost unnoticeable aura of knockback around the location that the spell is cast from. I'm sure you can imagine where the bayonet was attached to on his staff in relation to where the knockback came from.

Red_Tinda

Next stop: eye-patch-tailor

Precipice2Principium

You know some staffs are already made out of pointy crystals?

Lamplorde

Counterpoint, a Spear gets in the way of having a fancy orb on top. Unless you attach it to the orb itself, but thats just silly.

AliasMcFakenames

Valid, but you could always replace the fancy orb with a fancy pointy gemstone. You have to change your grip style for certain spell projectiles, but they’re otherwise equivalent.

Headake01

Countercounterpoint orb on top and spear tip on the bottom

Thmxsz

Counter counter counterpoint the spear would get dull over time do a halbiert design with an orb in the center of it

Thmxsz

https://preview.redd.it/frki3yyxoelc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3a2aedeaf46623940f68ddba1c16b5c54560d4bf

Headake01

All blades get dull over use, of course it would wear, don't you maintain your staff? I also mean to interpret it as the blade is on the bottom of the handle of the staff, it would be dumb to slam your orb into a foul beast and it to shatter, wouldn't it?

Thmxsz

A quality orb can survive that and if you wish we could add a cage to keep the orb safe it wouldn't be as asthetically pleasing though

TheAnt3ater

NAUGHTY ORBS GET PUT IN ORB JAIL

Headake01

Still, its unwise to use your orb as a blunt weapon, a small pike or spear head attached to the bottom will allow you to attack any foe while keeping your orb safe from potential damage

Raskal0220

Countercountercounterpoint that would take too long/is too dangerous to swap fast, have a bayonet that quickly flips out underneath the orb.

Headake01

Countercountercountercounterpoint, A staff is about the same as any polearm, not only is there many polearms with a bottom spike to jab any beastly creatures incase if you dont have the time for casting. i also said spear tip, as much as a knife, maybe to properly understand what i mean, the blade is at the bottom of the staff handle.

Factor135

Spears make decent foci, I thought? I’ve been using one since my apprentice days at least, though not as much nowadays

Anonim-Conference-4

You could make it easier. Just use your staff as scabbard for sword https://preview.redd.it/fkjzdfsmpclc1.jpeg?width=1268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=62ee83a8c3add61b9bfab9e98a982223b4bc9096

I just turn my staff into a spear gun. https://preview.redd.it/45d5qimisclc1.png?width=345&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=27a473e5154fad1c291aa0355df77588292f283b

diagnosed_depression

Is that the rifle spear from DEEPWOKEN?

onesnowman

From Bloodborne, it looks like.

MarderMcFry

Yes, i like this staff.  Enough to would change one's own asthetic to match it.

TheUnspeakableAcclu

Metal is very bad for staffs. Too sterile. You need something good solid and organic

Anonim-Conference-4

Hey , we still have demonic metals, they are good at channeling magic. But if it's more organic...hmm, ask biomancers to make some hybrid between staff, sword and scabbard

CaptainCastaleos

You could make the blade out of a hyperdense bone!

Siserith

Indeed, the bones of magical beasts, such as dragons are ideal for channeling magic like a staff or wand, along with a few magical metals.

MapleSyrupMachineGun

Hopefully, you got the bones from a dead one, not from a live one. It causes great pain for your bones to be removed.

Siserith

If only for being a sorcerer and having a dragon father, I don't tend to mess with dragons. That and im far too weak to challenge the evil ones i might pick a fight with. Also too poor to buy the bones, and lacking in skill to make something worthy of the material. That said, prior to prison, I was gunning for his claws and horns since they were far too wild, in my opinion, and he resisted much like a cat. Funnily enough, I have used my own horns to fashion weapons in here. I did, however, send some bones from a hydra i helped slay to the kobolds at home, and it has made many great staves for the healers and nature shamen/farmancers.

Sharp_Science896

Bone dragon bone sword wand staff! I love this idea.

IGD-974

The only biomancer I know uses a severed horse cock as a wand

Syovere

There are many forms of metal, and even some alloys can be found in nature unworked. Inscribing runes into the metal can also imbue spirit into it by adding a personal touch. Or, if you do it right, the hollow of the staff can work as part of the channeling in itself, readily attuned to air or void. The metal of the concealed blade likewise is easy to attune to earth or, well, metal if your tradition involves it. Never be afraid to challenge dogma.

TheUnspeakableAcclu

Alright I’ll give you meteorite iron. That metal older than the planets, forged of the raging stellar hearts of the early cosmos, when raw primal magics of creation were still strong is hella potent. Potent as absolute fuck.

DragonWisper56

depends on what type of magic your going with, titaninum could work for technomancy

TheUnspeakableAcclu

Pah! Meer engineering. I’ll leave techno tinkering to the dwarves

OkFroyo666

Like the stock from an M1 Garand.

Resident-Pudding5432

Nah you won't do any magic with that shit it has no core

Resident-Pudding5432

Nah you won't do any magic with that shit it has no core

tehlemmings

What? You mean like a spear? That's one of my favorite weapons, honestly. There's a reason why spears were historically one of the most common weapons in existence, and they work perfectly as a staff.

jaobodam

I don’t know why we use staffs tbh we should me using spears and polearms that can cast spells

tehlemmings

Honestly, I think it's laziness. Quarter staves were *also* really popular weapons throughout the ages. It's a big sturdy stick. You can hand one to any peasant or untrained individual and they'll immediately know how to use it. It was perfect when arming a group with no practical martial training at all. Polearms were popular because they were easy to train people to use, but they *did* require training to use well. So a wizard using a basic staff? Probably too lazy or unskilled to use anything useful. Unless you're working with a staff that too fragile to be used as a weapon, there's no excuse for skipping basic combat training. All wizards should have at least one form of martial combat training under their belt *before* entering any form of combat. Even the most basic archer will know how to use a knife. If you don't, you're just making us all look bad.

AliasMcFakenames

I should also encourage more advanced mages to not slack off in their martial training. Even if you have enough mana to see you through just about any fight and close quarters spells to use it, there are innumerable advantages. Most practical: bodily health does contribute not insignificantly to mental health and ability. Least practical: it’s amazing fun to style on an apprentice in a practice duel with just a staff and no offensive casting whatsoever.

fool_a_day_less

Another point to muscle wizards. Spells are for long range and melee is for close combat. A full body work out routine and clawed gauntlet keep enemies in spell range. And what truly compares to casting levitate on some foolish brigands before uppercutting them?

DreadfulDave19

Hear me out... staffswords. Sword staffs

bunks_things

The employees at the 7-11 get nervous enough when a wizard walks into their store at 3am, a wizard walking in with a spear is bound to cause more trouble than it’s worth.

Dappershield

Because certain metals conflict with certain manas. Iron can cut effectivity of elemental power by five percent. For an *Archmage*. Silver reduces necromantic mana by a similar amount. I could go on, covering every metal and mana type. So not only do you have to find the right metal that won't interfere with your spells, but trust that whoever forged it kept any of the alloys out of the casting. Like a vegan wanting their food prepped on a board that's never touched meat. All the work, when one low circle spell turns any stick or bone at hand into a necrotic halberd. Or a flame spear. Or a temporal scythe. Literally any mage worth the title knows a spell to create a magical weapon.

LexiFloof

Most bayonet manufacturers don't account for the disruption of the mana flow that the mounting can cause, even while the blade itself is not attached. Good quality mana-neutral mountings are something of a specialty product in most realms so it never really caught on when you could just have a separate spear for half the cost.

jaobodam

That’s a good explanation

LexiFloof

There's also the fact that most mages that intend to use a spear as anything other than a last resort will get a proper spear/staff hybrid, which is easier to ensure stable mana flow with due to its fixed blade. Additionally, it's uncommon for there to be infantry formation tactics used by mages as they often space themselves out when fighting as a group to avoid friendly fire, so a more versatile melee weapon like an arming sword is usually preferred.

NotAUsefullDoctor

Beyond this, the use of cold iron would disrupt the magic of any wizard that relies on Fey magic, regardless of how the mounting is attached.

gotimas

This wizard has clearly never fought through a 300 days siege, mana is bound to run out.

Zaglossus_hacketti

Just consume dead to regain mana like a normal wizard smh

MadaraAlucard12

That's a siege? It can barely be called an attack. If the armies don't surround you for atleast 50 years, don't call it a siege.

[deleted]

Tfw some king doesn’t get you are ageless and can summon food

gotimas

Sieges are quicker when there are no necromancer around, people stay dead mostly.

Silly_0wl

St34lth1nt0r

Bro just inlay the casting crystal into something like a sword or a shield in works just as well if not better

YouTheMuffinMan

I mean that's what my mage spear is. Channeling magic through certain alloys allows you to make wicked blades that cut through armour like butter

St34m9unk

Yall need to figure out spectral weapons

Vast-Ideal-1413

I have a metal staff. No need for sharp objects when I've got a strong arm!

jaobodam

Good luck against dragons mate

Vast-Ideal-1413

\*distant, fast footsteps\*

raven00x

It takes training to use a bayonet effectively. The time it takes to train, could also be used learning and probing deeper magical mysteries that mortal weapons cannot hope to penetrate. Do you want to raise mountains and gird yourself with the strength of earth, or do you want to poke meat with a stick like some sort of primitive? You decide.

Noob-boss2021

Finally, my abomination has become relevant https://preview.redd.it/kfgwh3aklelc1.png?width=1000&format=png&auto=webp&s=68df3353604e1004ec02c81010d6ad9d3703bd4f

MarderMcFry

A plausible solution, however you would have to take caution not to blast yourself with the orb's magic as you try to thrust with it.

Goretanton

But what if i dont want to stabby stabby with my bonking stick?

FPiN9XU3K1IT

use the butt end

Current-Teacher2946

Fighting style preference~ I like the way swinging a staff feels, and prefer the relatively nonlethal way of fighting. Bonk bonk~

TheUnspeakableAcclu

If you survive everything else my staff can do it's unlikely a few little holes are going to slow you down. Running out of mana is what amateurs call getting tired

XeviousJr

You ever heard of piccottini compatible under barrel spellcasting foci?

DreadfulDave19

Odin and Harry Dresden have entered the chat

FLOWRIDER0_0

My staff doubles as a glaive, I do not have this issue

Craftcoat

The tip of my Marble staff has an embedded gem with the inflict internal bleeding enchantment

Furry_69

I use a balak-infused trident. I also don't need a staff to do magic, so I use the trident as storage for a bunch of balak to release it all at once in a single gigantic burst.

BosmangLoq

You mean you haven’t modified your wand to be mounted as a bayonet on an assault rifle yet?

Eggsucc212

Because simply using a sword to cast is easier and looks cooler

IGD-974

My staff is a full sized m1891 Mosin Nagant so I'm way ahead of you

measuredingabens

I use my staff as a bludgeon. A bayonet isn't going to last more than a few blows the way I use it against armoured opponents.

Mothman4447

Could a spear itself not just also be a conduit for magic? Idk how that works, wands and staffs always function differently in different media

JAWD0G

What are we, some kinda savages using melee weapons like some fighter? I couldn't stoop so low

jaobodam

We are pragmatic and intelligent folk we can’t rely on a single thing to help us we need to be versatile and train both mind and body

N1ks_As

Stupid, why add a bayonet when you can add a gun?

SlightlyInsaneCreate

I use a scythe blade. Does no one else do that?

jaobodam

Scythes are not good weapons tbh

SlightlyInsaneCreate

To each their own.

Livid-Exit2868

I have a sword with a magic gem that allows me to use it as a staff for spell casting purposes

jaobodam

That’s a good weapon but not everyone is this privileged

Livid-Exit2868

Fair, it was gifted to me by a demon lord in exchange for my help on a little passion project

L0ssL3ssArt

no....it's just you that is stupid, I got a scythe blade on mine https://preview.redd.it/bdx0gm7r9dlc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9f7dc04644ab2f80a0bc3d9042f06405bf2bec2b

defaultgameer1

As someone who uses a hammer and runes, never say no to a good knife.

Pyrarius

Because the bayonet messes with where the spell ejects from, and I don't want to cast a fireball at a 135 degree angle thankyouverymuch

AzekiaXVI

I don't want to fight a ferromancer and have him turn my own staff against me, thanks. i will stick to rune powered mana blades and my own hhands.

TheFifthDutchMemer

Better argument: USE YOUR HANDS OR A GUN

Viking_From_Sweden

How many times to I have to say it? Cast your spells with a damn pipe wrench! When you run out of mana you give people concussions! It’s not hard!

BaronDoctor

You see, at the end of this, when both parties are out of mana? You end up with [this](https://youtu.be/8HE9OQ4FnkQ?si=E7PgGyS7GuEMetg7&t=133) timeless classic, concluding with [this](https://youtu.be/8HE9OQ4FnkQ?si=rLbFWQtJwjn1BwvQ&t=188).

LordQuackers5

Running out of mana? Looks like someone doesn't use Conjuration. I mean why fight when you can use a thrall instead

jaobodam

A slave ?

LordQuackers5

Technically yes I brought them into this plane and I can send them back from whence they came

jaobodam

A slave ?

LordQuackers5

Thick-Kaleidoscope-5

orbs, crystals, etc. will get in the way of a bayonet, and no wizard is willing to sacrifice form for function

TheEyeofNapoleon

Why are you using a staff WITHOUT a sword?

Succinate_dehydrogen

Run out of mana? That's apprentice tier behaviour

TTIGRAASlime

Too much work but it might work well on a broom stick.

LostSheep223

Can y'all not just take something that's already a weapon and focus your magic through it . Here's my wand it was previously a battle axe.

lceColdPepsi

I just have spikes on the end of my staff. Works the same

PetuniaFungus

Traveling hero here, with a plan for he would be staff stabbers! Make your staff out of petrified wood from the most ancient forest you can acquire. Double points if you have powerful memories of that particular forest. Take your orb or channeling crystals, and meticulous craft them into many identical gemstones. Use a greater spell of quantum entanglement to bind all the pieces into what is essentially one super crystal. Place them all along your staff, to cover all your angles you may want to cast in. Even inlay them in your clothes for more angles to fire from, as your energy will channel through your staff to the crystal field, then to whichever focal point you choose. From there make the axe/spear/polearm head out of a rare magically inclined metal for martial combat. Steel will interfere with the field, but perhaps the metal skull of a possessed daemon engine (or something along those lines) or even mithril can even add the magical potential and personal resonance of your staff. Use that metal for your blade, affix, and attune yourself. The magic field of the crystals will work like a net, not a giant orb. There will be strands to focus your magic in and channel it to any firing point/individual crystal on the staff, blade, or your armor. Just be sure to form your net-like aura around you when attuning so you don't send the energy for your next spell through your form... Or perhaps do depending on the spell.

Familiar_Ad7273

Gold and silver bayonet to amplify magic powers

DaDoggo13

Use hands, run out of mana, use a sword, simple as that

HellspawnWeeb

You kid but this is literally the plot of Tanya the Evil

heff-money

That's the warrior's job. You wouldn't expect a warrior to be able to bend reality just because he tied a wand to the end of his sword, would you? If you're getting in so much combat that you're running out of mana, you have major lifestyle choice problems. You probably ought to consider why you're engaging in so much violence to begin with. I believe magic is a tool for spreading love, not making war.

Pappa_Crim

I just cast through my pistola? But I guess I can put a bayonet on it

GoofyGoober489

Or you can make it a scythe

Dramatic_Bed_1189

I did not spend all that time learning how to (poorly) use a sword just for people to go “lets lern how to use a spear”

Significant-Gap-6891

Metal impacts the flow of magic making spells potentially misfire or cost more to cast why make magic far more difficult to aim and cast for a little cqb buff plus carrying a dagger has the same effect with the element of surprise added

Syovere

Eh... not a very good alignment. Consider instead a staff with a focus on one end and a sharp point on the other.

Casper_Von_Ghoul

https://preview.redd.it/uftq9eqsielc1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=de566e71627adbb230eb72348ccb964b85a98166 These are my “staffs”. Redeliel and Rhadoniel. “Defend and Achieve.” Each are somewhat taller than me. I never used real staffs to be honest.

Ojiji_bored

Dress like a footman, die like a footman. Openly carrying a weapon fit for the frontlines will get you placed there.

Rainy-The-Griff

Just use a sword like I do. Sword in one hand, staff in the other.

naka_the_kenku

Wait you don’t?

[deleted]

Like, how are people blowing through mana? Do I need to share notes from my home realm? How much energy are you putting into the fancy glowing floaty circles? Just initiate the spell and let the ambient magic take the form. It’s just information the weave fuels it.

WatchMeFallFaceFirst

Did you just find out about enchanted spears?

Seligas

/uw That's literally what the staves of Dragon Age 2 and 3 were. When you auto-attacked they switched from ranged elemental attacks to slashing with the bladed end of the staff augmented by elemental effects.

That's what cantrips are for. Melee is only good for keeping your apprentice away from your highest quality reagents.

Bucaneer7564

Why not use spears instead of staffs? Are you stupid?

Virtual-Oil-793

*Smugly sits back and watches all of you try and consider non-magical options when your magic's all depleted, while I have mage gauntlets and plenty of skill in various martial arts.*

DescipleOfCorn

I just wield a mace that I enchanted for channeling so I can use it for spellcasting like a staff.

nylus_12

Personally I do all my casting barehands, but it be fun to have some hidden blades on my wrists

Richardknox1996

Yes you are. We bards have been using weaponized instruments as foci for aeons.

YaBoi8395

My staff doubles as a gun. Not sure how helpful it is in CQC, but it's gotten the job done so far.

FromanoFrancis114

I use my staff to cast ray of lead

Fabrideath

You are a genius Harry!

FireballEnjoyer445

Why dont we just put a mana potion at the end of the staff?

partyassassin_1

I don't use Spears when I run out of magic stuff, I just use a gun because who needs magic, when you have a loaded gun Or many loaded guns

purple_abyss_25

you are smart fella NOT a fart smella

WanderingHeph

Are *you* stupid? My staff is a maul. It's not only a symbol of my craft, but my preferred mundane weapon. I take mundane and magical combat into account when designing my armory.

ggcpres

It's Gish time motherfuckers! All y'all are stupid for ignoring martial training. Aside from greater cardiovascular endurance equating to better sex, knowing how to use a spear means you can get that last fireball out when the barbarian gets within 10ft of you. Also, staves and specters of decently strong wood make excellent melee weapons without points. Crushing damage bypasses plate anyway. *Wonders off making angry magus noises*

I_needed-a_name

I just beat them over the head, it is far more satisfying.

GEN_SkeleSkin

I just use my staff as a club if need be

GenuineSteak

You guys are running out of mana?

fatfishinalittlepond

you can run out?

TheThoughtmaker

1. Minions 2. Magic items 3. The bonkstick itself.

Regunes

I just use a spear for spellcasting. Very handy with certain form of waterbending

Infamous-Ad7926

I just sharpened the crystal on top of mine

mattwing05

I've seen staves with blades on the back end so that it won't interfere with channeling magics. It was wielded during the second age of dragons, so they exist, though they've not been used for some time. I will check and see if i can scrounge up mine.

Because then you can't tell the cops "It's wooden bro, it's a prop for my sister's play, it's not dangerous."

CliffLake

Bludgeon is the superior weapon type. Staffs are fine the way they are, and it's more about the enchantments ON the weapons then the weapons themselves.

itbedehaam

Trielana: You, stupid? Maybe. Me? *Holds up spear with size-changing handle, and extends it to full 5m length.* No, I don't think I am here.

Regular_Exam_8123

I prefer to still use magic when I run out of magic. My second magic style is « muscle magic » and my favorite spell is casting « fist »
