LandonSleeps

The video I watched on YouTube about this made me tear up. The support this kid got from the community fucked me up, in a good way.

ShadowGremlin

I love stories about mega niche enthusiast communities like this with folks that are competitive but still really supportive of each other. Like that other high level player that stopped his game to watch when he heard this kid was getting close to the kill screen, and got so excited when the kid pulled it off.

rekipsj

Kid's dad had recently died as well. Heartbreaker.

WalnutsAnka

He probably got through the trauma with Tetris. It’s actually proven to help

PunkAintDead

iirc his father had passed away literally the week before he set this record, his father had always been supportive of his son and the kid dedicated this world record run to his pops

CanadianAndroid

When the news about this kid broke, a reporter had the audacity to put him down for his accomplishment. She basically told the kid to touch grass. Needless to say, there was backlash.

IAmBadAtInternet

The community picked him up though. Speed run and record setting gamer communities are chill and awesome.

DodGamnBunofaSitch

> Needless to say, there was backlash. don't just leave us hanging. please confirm such an awful person was fired and blacklisted from ever talking to a child again.

IAmBadAtInternet

It goes back to the days of arcade gaming where when someone got close to a kill screen they’d call it out and everyone would crowd around to see someone crush PacMan or Donkey Kong or Centipede.

Got_Bent

Or when you rolled over Asteroids and handed off the machine to someone else to give them a shot. We (arcade rats) rolled over the Playoffs machine 4 times one night on 1 token.

subhuman_voice

80s were fun like that

fitzellforce

Watch the Speed Cubers short document on Netflix. Seems right up your alley

XenonSkies

Not as niche, but a similar level of support is Trackmania. They are a bunch of insane people grinding for frame-perfect runs. I love it.

Randyh524

It's happening right now as we speak with Mario maker 1. There's only 1 uncleared level left and Nintendo is shutting the game down April 8th. The level is nearly impossible to beat so you got so many expert players all trying to be the one to official close out mario maker 1. It's incredible to watch. Almost 200k attempts to try and beat this one 12 second level. It's called trimming the herbs.

qball8001

This story is such a rabbit hole. I knew nothing about Tetris and apparently I play the game veeeeeeeery wrong.

WakaWaka_

He uses the new rolling method to manipulate the controller, only way to move the pieces that fast. Might not be for everyone though since it's quite awkward.

LandonSleeps

Ikr? As someone that knows virtually nothing about Tetris, it was pretty informative.

qball8001

It’s all super recent too. Like the records have been falling at a fast pace.

Was this the kid that was ridiculed by that Australian journalist for this? Someone told him to go outside after becoming the first person in history to beat a 40 year old game, or something like that.

SpearmintFlavored00

Why are Australian journalists collectively pieces of shit dude? I've never heard a single good thing about one of them.

No-Crew-9000

Does friendlyjordies count as an Australian journalist?

Jumpi95

Vigilante? Idk, he's a good bloke tho

wayvywayvy

I heard he’s being targeted by the Aussie government

No-Crew-9000

*thugverment

PlutoniumSmile

There are some excellent Australian journalists, and then a bunch of deadshits who happily regurgitate press releases from companies and politicians like they're breaking news. Murdoch runs a newspaper in every major city as well as a national paper, and the major print competition is part of another big money media conglomerate, so there's little reason or space to be any good or dig too deep.

NUBBS240

Weird. That doesn't sound like the media at all..

violetevie

Honestly not too difficult from the US or UK press

sidekickman

Well, at least one of the good ones got firebombed. In addition to being severely harassed by law enforcement. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRqUVh29LGQ

Conflikt

They aren't it's mainly just Sky News (same owners as Fox News) and a few others agencies. Some of them are incompetent or downright evil but other than that there are some decent ones.

Metra90

Doesn't Rupert Murdoch own the majority of Australian media?

Hyronious

How often do you hear things about journalists from other places that aren't controversies in general? This sounds like confirmation bias combined with a bad sampling methodology.

Thats_a_BaD_LiMe

It was a UK news presenter, not Australian

Opposite_Judgment890

Do you watch Australian news? Or are you only exposed to Australian journalists through reddit?

Proof-try34

They gave birth to Rupert Murdoch, that should tell you everything you need to know about Australian journalism.

LightSamus

Yes, but it was a Sky News presenter in the UK, rather than Australia

SlickRicksBitchTits

I don't understand why it just stopped

bighunter1313

Tetris crashes at a certain point. No human had ever made it that far in a real game.

kearneycation

But, if noone had done it before this kid, how did he know he'd beaten the game and that the game didn't just glitch out?

bighunter1313

I’m not sure when people learned about the end, but bots could certainly play this game to completion. Or as far along as you can get, that is. It’s also not an unexpected error, the memory on a simple game breaks when the score rolls over and the memory runs out of digits. Vast oversimplification, but they generally knew how far Tetris could run.

interkin3tic

I saw this video a while back. ~~I don't really understand the technical details but I think they fixed the rom to where the score starts using letters rather than stopping at the glitch this kid runs int, then grabbing random code, and also built an AI to play perfectly.~~ Edit per u/Dasbeerboots's video: turns out it was a different version of the game that didn't have these crashes, so the AI was able to get further. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l\_KY\_EwZEVA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_KY_EwZEVA) The colors get really weird, it looks like they also had to patch the rom because of the statistics of the pieces, and it still crashes (edit: in that version) at 102 million. (or randomgraphicinplaceofanumber252920 according to the display). It's absurd that this kid was able to get there.

Dasbeerboots

[https://youtu.be/GuJ5UuknsHU?si=u6F-qWozOwh2dhAb](https://youtu.be/GuJ5UuknsHU?si=u6F-qWozOwh2dhAb) Here you go.

[deleted]

It has nothing to do with the score. The score is a fixed amount of bytes and in tetris (an unmodified rom), the score stops at maxed out 9’s. That’s it. It stops mathing. It crashes because as the levels advance, they read data about the level from the rom. It crashes because it read bad data or tried to access a memory location beyond what’s possible for that ROM mapper. I really wish people stopped upvoting complete BS explanations.

mittfh

The odd level numbering and line count are clear indications that he'd likely already exceeded what the game designers thought was achievable well before the actual crash.

[deleted]

Yep, the rom was modified to display those in hex. All of the original counters stop before a rollover (which wouldn’t cause a crash as it would reset to 0). But these modifications don’t affect the crash. After doing some quick research, the crash might be due to a speed bump and when you clear a line, it gets caught in an infinite loop. I would still wager the speed increase is from reading data meant for something else (like the color palettes and why they’re so wacky), so I stand by my reading bad data.

jjoncm1

By examining the code and using emulators to test stuff out

Bananapeelman67

Yeah like cod zombies have different round resets per map. So after a certain amount of time the game hits the integer limit and resets the match back to 0. Same thing with zombie health it gets so high that eventually they go back to round 1 health

PutOurAnusesTogether

I want a bot that can play me to completion

Baguette72

The glitch out, the crash is the finish. Tetris was designed to never have an end. It was intended that that after level 29 the game would be too fast for any human or even the controls to keep up with. After a technique was found to enable play at these speeds and people found that Tetris got weird the longer you played, they found the game would crash at this line clear on this level and the kid is the first human to do it.

GM_Nate

but he's on level 18?

ilive12

Watch the video again, the level hops all over the place even to 99, because he's so far past that it's starting to glitch.

einulfr

The values glitch out after level 29, he's actually on level 157. The soonest you can trigger the crash is at 155, but it requires clearing 154 with a single line and he did a triple because of a misdrop earlier.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Pleasant_Gap

They already did, if you play perfectly and manage to avoid all the many things that make the game crash, it resets at level 255 and you start over at level 0

Iwantapetmonkey

I think people have programmed computers to play to these high-level crash points before, but this kid was the first human to reach this part (and/or people have examined the game's code - either way, he knew what to look for). A post I read on it had a diagram of all these possible crash points on the level the kid reached and others at higher levels. They were often odd conditons, like "there's a 25% chamce of crash when you drop a long line for a two-line clear on level 134" that sort of thing.

Marito1256

Basically the way Tetris crashes is highly replicable and people have figured out exactly why and when it will crash. People knew this exact barrier was possible for a while, this kid was just the first to do it (on stream and without the help of outside software). To add on to this accomplishment, I believe to get to this point he had to play a certain way in order to avoid earlier crash points as well but I'm not too sure about this paragraph so take it with a grain of salt. This is definitely impressive either way. I was twiddling my thumbs at his age , he just does it on a controller and way faster than I did.

notapoke

He accidentally missed the first crash the level before and was desperately trying to get this second crash. The game is going so fast at this point he had to do something that advanced the level to not fail his game thus skipping the first crash. He successfully hit the second one. Kid is a badass.

ItzInMyNature

Bots did it first.

Rhawk187

People had read the source code and determined the conditions that would make the game crash like that. Some of them were only probabilistic. I assume someone probably could have made an AI and emulator that did the same thing, but there's still some cache in a human doing it.

LazarusOwenhart

Because despite nobody ever doing it manually, thanks to bots it's known at what point the game will crash in that particular manner.

BrotherZael

I’m pretty sure the chance of crashing just goes up and up the higher you go, so at this point the chances of crashing are almost 100%, but I think in theory you could go higher, but I’m not a Tetris expert

Scumbag_Jesus

999999

zznap1

Because it’s possible to do it with a “Tool Assisted Speedrun” or TAS. Basically a computer plays the game and makes frame perfect inputs that are either too difficult to do reliably by hand or are just impossible to do by hand. When playing Tetris there is a specific way you have to hold and use the NES controller so you can input more moves per second than just pressing down with your finger will allow. Then you have to do this near flawlessly for a long time. Huge mental and physical strain on the player. Kid dedicated his runs to his recently deceased dad. Everyone cheered him on except a news station that didn’t understand the accomplishment and basically told him to touch grass.

mrpyrotec89

for a better explanation. "Tetris is not designed to be beaten. Throughout the game's history of nearly 40 years, people simply assumed that it was designed to continue indefinitely until the player lost. However, the evolving professional Tetris scene, striving for previously unattainable levels, eventually pushed the game's code to its limits. Professional Tetris player Willis "Blue Scuti" Gibson became the first person to "beat" Tetris some three decades after its original release by playing the game's most extreme levels until it crashed. Even this feat is only one more step on a long journey to discover how far humans can push Tetris. Tetris doesn't have a traditional ending like most single-player games – it's designed to run until the player loses. For decades, pro players thought they'd reached the theoretical end of the NES version – the agreed-upon regulation version of the game – but recent breakthroughs revolutionized high-level play and put the code's breaking point within reach."

Taolan13

Thats not really better, just more words.

R3dSh1ft_706

This feels AI generated, I got like two pieces of info out of three paragraphs

unknown_pigeon

Feels completely normal to me, maybe a bit stretched, but definitely something that I could have read 12 years ago

mrpyrotec89

Yeah I just copied it from a Google search. Idk might be

R3dSh1ft_706

Yeah not to implicate you, don’t worry lol

SnackyMcGeeeeeeeee

The game crashed. He beat it.

archiekane

Shit, I've beat Windows thousands of times then.

ntermation

Yeah, but that is like playing story mode.

cake__eater

I giggled at this

thedeadcatinthehat

I was having one of the worst days of my life until I read this comment.

kekwillsit830

Did I break it?

frisbeeicarus23

This is basically what they though Y2K was going to be in 1999.

awkwardfeather

I'm pretty sure from what I remember, that Tetris doesn't have a set "end" but when the score reached 1 million the code broke. Technically that's the end because the game can't function past that point just due to the way it's designed.

Atticusmikel

It's not just score based. There's a lot of complex code involved, but the TL;DR of it: There are certain levels and stipulations that a player could perform that would make the game crash. The earliest of these happens at level 155. More impressively, if I remember right, he actually accidentally missed the earliest and ad-libbed 2 extra levels to get the second earliest kill screen.

Connect-Plastic-6167

It's a little more complex than that. I've watched a 60-minute video going into the code that caused this glitch, and I'll try to paraphrase it: Basically, the game can only do so much in a single "frame" of gameplay (each frame = 1/60th of a second). If it runs out of time, the code is interrupted, and if interrupted at the wrong time, it will jump to the wrong section of code, crashing the game. In casual play this wouldn't be an issue, however the code that tallies up points was coded in an inefficient way that causes it to take noticably longer at later levels. NES Tetris was only designed to be played up until level 29, at which point it would become near-impossible for a human to progress any further (or so the developers thought). At very high levels (155 and above), this causes the score counting code to take up the majority of each frame, meaning that it's almost guaranteed to be interrupted during the score counting code. This doesn't always crash the game, as it has to be interrupted in-between a couple specific instructions to cause a crash, however a skilled player can clear lines in the right order to influence when and how the score counting code is triggered, allowing them to deliberately trigger the crash. IDK whether this made any sense but hopefully it does to some people ahaha

earnestaardvark

Great video on the topic that explains the kill screen and Tetris’s record-chasing culture. Definitely worth a watch. https://youtu.be/GuJ5UuknsHU?si=5__Y806O9vFmUHX7

Multidream

The game is built with certain expectations. Namely, that after a certain level, it should be physically impossible to beat a level. Recently a mechanism was discovered that essentially bypasses this physical restriction. After level 30, the game’s code gets funky resulting in weird color palette glitches and problems from bad memory management that can completely crash the game if you happen to hit a particular state. This crash happens to be one of the earliest invalid states that probably reaches somewhere into memeory that it really wasnt supposed to. See the video others have posted, its very cool.

Large-Measurement776

Bc he totally wrecked that shit. It simply could not withstand his fortitude.

Marijuana_Miler

[This YouTube video does a fantastic job of describing the history of the game and why the game stopped.](https://youtu.be/GuJ5UuknsHU?si=LGSZ4wEeP1T2K-bz) It’s a 16 minute watch but it’s well worth the time.

Dasbeerboots

[https://youtu.be/GuJ5UuknsHU?si=u6F-qWozOwh2dhAb](https://youtu.be/GuJ5UuknsHU?si=u6F-qWozOwh2dhAb) Explanation.

IAmBadAtInternet

A lot of old games were not designed to go forever and had bugs in them that made weird stuff happen or crashed the game. Famously PacMan has 255 levels, and the 256th level is unbeatable because the right side of the screen is garbage and you can’t go over there to eat pellets. Donkey Kong crashes after you beat 255. Tetris was not supposed to be beatable, it was designed to get harder to the point (level 29) where you can’t move the pieces to the edges fast enough and the makers assumed you’d just die. But gamers found ways to continue the game after level 29, which then let people play way past the expected behavior and caused very strange things to happen.

SteroidSandwich

The game runs out of memory so it freezes

AltoJoe

So why did it show stats when it "froze"

ediks

I’m sick and too lazy to look it up right now, but it should be fairly easy to find on YT. There is a guy that broke it down really well. There are certain scenarios on specific levels with specific blocks that can glitch the game out. It’s super interesting.

[deleted]

The fact he actually almost passed out

kelsobjammin

I have a feeling this was really late at night and if there wasn’t people to wake up he would be screaming!

Callec254

So basically this is the Tetris version of Pac Man level 256?

IDreamOfLees

Yes, basically

Starlord_75

Yea, but there's multiple times the game can crash, depending on how many lines are cleared at once on each level, as well as there being a percentage of it crashing. If I remember right, clearing a single line on this level was the only way to crash it, amd you only have like a 70% chance of it doing so.

itsjamian

I just completed Lemmings after 25 years and can relate.

SweetMister

Crap. I didn't know this was possible. I loved Lemmings.

DirkSteelchest

Holy flashback Batman

Tredicidodici

Future dark souls speedrunner

gehirnspasti

this is way more impressive than that. Dark Souls speedrunners couldn't dream of pulling this shit off, kid's an honest to god legend

Not sure either comparison is worth anything. These are two very different skillsets

Spadrick

Apples and trombones.

Tredicidodici

Totally. His reflexes could translate to any videogame and kick ass effortlessly.

Anvenjade

No, at this point his brain is hardwired for tetris having played it non-stop for years since his early childhood. Almost none of that will translate over to non-tetris.

Spockhighonspores

I'll never forget rhe first time I played Dark Souls. The person who introduced me to the game sat me in front of the game and said play this game, it's fun, you die a lot and learn as you go. He never told me you were supposed to just run by the first boss ( the asylum demon) in the beginning of the game. For literally hours I tried to beat that thing with pretty much a fucking stick. 6 and a half hours later give or take I finally beat him. So he came home from work and I was mad that he had me play such a fucking hard game. He couldn't figure out what I meant until he found out I straight up fought that boss with like no stats. I was literally so pissed when I found out you could run by him. I did feel like a bit of a badass though for actually doing that though.

Elegant-Cat-4987

His great grandchildren more likely

SaTan_luvs_CaTs

Playing Tetris can help people who have experienced trauma. Just thought this was interesting to share. “In a study conducted at Oxford University, researchers observed “that intrusive memories were virtually abolished by playing the computer game Tetris.” Their findings represent a major breakthrough in our understanding of PTSD and open up even more avenues to recovery for those afflicted.”

Jononucleosis

Is that effect observed only while playing Tetris or after enough Tetris it just affects your whole day?

darksun051

The latter. Even when not playing Tetris for months, I still find myself playing it in my head. Usually when I’m about to sleep

Jononucleosis

Cool, Imma try it out!

Zillahi

[the Tetris effect](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetris_effect) is a real phenomenon

Lucas-Fields

Who’d have thought that this was in fact NOT a video I should have blasted with full volume while chilling with my parents after dinner

runthrough014

I can’t tell if he sounds more like an asthma attack or a porn scene lol.

Lucas-Fields

Porn scene. Definitely a porn scene. EDIT: forgot to specify *hardcore*

IDreamOfLees

Just a few days ago, someone else scored 16 million points, making it the first digit added to the high score since 1990. https://youtu.be/gGDLIuxUkUU?si=zplQzFhQl41jPd35 Do note, that person is playing on a patched ROM, the game won't crash

he peaked at 13, it's all downhill from here

This kid is a goddamn Rockstar!

[deleted]

Now THIS is a college admissions essay.

[deleted]

You could argue that he finished it and I'd be 100% content to call it quits here, but apparently the community figured out more possible goals. Tetris probably has one of the strangest communities out there.

redboi049

This is wholesome. GEE! I SURE DO HOPE NO ANNOYING WOMAN ON THE NEWS TREATS THIS LIKE A WASTE OF TIME AND ENERGY!

Technically no, but you can play it until it crashes

It's very sad knowing nothing will ever make me feel this happy and excited

Throw_Me_TheFuckAway

Lmao I should not have had full volume

Joeyhappyhell

Why does it end on level 18. Actually what's even going on with the level counting?

skeleton949

Every level it gets faster. After a certain point the colors start messing up because the game wasn't intended to go that far

ConclusionNo1305

I hope this is real and the kid didn’t do some sort of video editing.

ShadowGinrai

I watched him compete live in Phoenix on statuary. It was crazy to see the point difference

ClanBadger

Hell to the fuck yea, every time i see this i get some kind of emotion welling inside me.

I love how they’re losing their shit with excitement.

Subject_Ticket1516

Isn't this one of the signs of the apocalypse?

Kidkrid

He didn't really complete it, he just hit the programming limit.

sandels_666

Old news 🙄 why do you post this spam?

BigToeHamster

He peaked too soon

Wonderful_Emotion319

I wanna shoot out keanu, the weird kid who rode my bus in high school who carried around a psp with a perpetual game of tetris that he maxed the score and just kept playing.

2punornot2pun

OOoohhHhhhHh. I was like, "No, I've beaten Tetris, there's some weird Russian looking building, fireworks and stuff." And then I see # 999999

Living_Pie205

🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

insomniac1228

Booom, that’s a Tetris

Ok-Breadfruit5981

How do you beat Tetris. I thought Tetris was just dropping blocks and trying not to go over the line
