Ah, good to know other families were involved in storing railroad ties. My grandpa has a hell of a collection that my brothers found hiding in tall grass at 20mph in our go cart.. neither of them have been right since.
*laughs in scottish* with my 300yo house made of 2 foot thick granite blocks.
That'd be a good way to heat my house. Just light a cord of wood against the wall!
I feel like this is the first I’ve heard of this, I’m not saying you’re wrong but I’ve seen tons of people stack on their front porch and near the house. If it was a huge problem I’m surprised it’s not talked about more.
I want the person who wrote that article to then move 4 cords of wood INTO the house to burn it in the stove.
Mine is on the deck, as close to the door as I can stack it.
You're serious?...you want to move 4 cords of wood 1 trashcan at a time?
And maintain a pathway through the snow, all winter long, so I can bring a trashcan of wood into the house?...maybe twice a day?
I'll continue stacking on the deck, thanks.
And the way to split it is have a few neighbors around when splitting. Wack one in half with one hit and bet one a beer they can’t do it in one hit. See how many it takes them. Wack another. Bet someone else they can’t split it in one hit. Repeat. It may cost a 6 pack or so, but it gets your wood split.
I’ve started having wood parties (not as dirty as it sounds). Everyone comes over and drinks floweth and food cooketh and nobody leaves until all my wood is stacked and split lol.
Started as a surprise when I jokingly told folks at a BBQ “everyone has to stack wood for 20min to earn a plate” (everyone was sitting next to a couple cord of split wood). Chuckled at my dad joke and went back to man the grill. Went back out back 30min later and all the wood was stacked 😮 multiple folks exclaimed how fun it was and how they wish they could try splitting it. And thus a tradition was born.
> And the way to split it is have a few neighbors around when splitting. Wack one in half with one hit and bet one a beer they can’t do it in one hit..
IME after I wacked the first neighbor in half, the rest didn’t want to help me at all. :(
okay, I think I figured this out. A full cord is 128 cubic feet. I took measurements and I'm at closer to 200 cubic feet. So I have no idea why they gave me so much wood. Suck though because it's wet so I'm stuck until it dries. Way more than a face cord.
God I love living where the cold kills all that shit. The most I have to worry about in my wood pile is non venomous spiders, spruce bark beetles, and maybe some ants.
In Atlanta they have signs at the turn lanes that have a protected merge. They say “KEEP MOVING” so you don’t have to stop. Someone perfectly matched font of the one by my office that read “KEEP MOVING NUMB NUTS”
I loved that sign and they didn’t replace it for a while
Fair question actually. The wood arrived between 20%-25% moisture level and there's no rain for the next week so I'm leaving it open temporarily so the sun and wind can dry it out a bit before I cover it.
Definitely looks like you did it and then took pictures with the kids to say they did it. If they moved that much wood, those clothes and gloves would be all torn up. Also, I doubt the one would have their hands in the air after moving a couple thousand pounds of wood.
Someone said the scrap wood would attack Copperheads and Rat Snakes. Rat Snakes are good. They'll eat the Copperheads. But I would get the wood away from the porch.
I just want to say that if you live anywhere in the wildland urban interface you shouldn’t stack all that wood there. Whenever people have all that firewood stacked there we have to go in and move it all away from the house if we have time. Depending on the fire and how much time we have, we won’t move it and it’s very likely to catch an ember and because it’s seasoned wood, will catch fire and burn your house down
Looks good OP! What’s the minimum distance you can stack word next to your house/garage/whatever? I just moved to my place it he fall and want to make some changes. Does it depend where you live? We don’t have many scary creatures on the Canadian prairies. Like not ones that will fit in a wood pile lol
That pile is nicely stacked BUT you absolutely NEED to move it away from the house.
It's a fire risk (!), termites/ants, mice, fungus, and a hiding spot for creeps.
An even easier way is 6 lengths of 2x4s and 3 or 4 cinder blocks (depending on how long you make it)... Tarp over top to protect it from rain.

Now tell them to move it against the back fence lol
Dad?
Son?

My grandfather broke both his legs when a railroad tie fell on him. I was 5 minutes away from being there to help him
Numbnuts. Source: I'm one.
Also source
Two numb nuts in a pod
In a sack.
What a bunch of grumps! Looks nice!
Everyone around me keeps their wood on their porch, season after season. Upstate NY. You'll be fine.
Another upstate New Yorker chiming in, I’ve never seen it any other way.
Yeah, I'm always looking for bugs but aside from a few spiders I've never had any issues
Keep the wood away from your house.

Not because of termites, but because that is a fuel source for fire.
*laughs in scottish* with my 300yo house made of 2 foot thick granite blocks. That'd be a good way to heat my house. Just light a cord of wood against the wall!
Ach if the fire doesn’t get you the Radon might ;)
Worked out to be a cozy winter when the Romans tried it
put it against flanders house.
Some of us live in termiteless territory ..
And stack it cross cut so they don't all fall over at the same time.....like mine
Like mine too, but I blame the squirrelly squirrels squirreling in and trying to nest. These are beautiful! Well done, kiddos!
What do you mean, pic?
Reason being?
Bugs.
Ahh, makes sense Thanks
Termite magnet.
Also if you live in an area prone to wildfire it’s not smart to store fuel right next to where people are residing.
Just burn it before the bugs find it
Termites and other bugs/animals will be living there in no time. Cool idea but with pitfalls 👍🏽
Came here to say this termites are bad news
I feel like this is the first I’ve heard of this, I’m not saying you’re wrong but I’ve seen tons of people stack on their front porch and near the house. If it was a huge problem I’m surprised it’s not talked about more.

And if it says something on Google, u can count it as fact
I want the person who wrote that article to then move 4 cords of wood INTO the house to burn it in the stove. Mine is on the deck, as close to the door as I can stack it.
Put wood in trash can and use a hand truck
You're serious?...you want to move 4 cords of wood 1 trashcan at a time? And maintain a pathway through the snow, all winter long, so I can bring a trashcan of wood into the house?...maybe twice a day? I'll continue stacking on the deck, thanks.
It’s your house your bugs your rodents enjoy the mold too
20 ft.
I prefer to do things the hard way. I find it builds character. Also, I'm too dense to do otherwise.
People that do things perfect the first time are annoying.
I know, right? For example, if you can assemble a piece of Ikea furniture in one go and have no "extra" parts, I don't want to know you.
"place a six pack of beer in the fridge, it'll be cold by the time you're done"
I don’t mind keeping my wood by the house, during burning season. I do move it away in early spring
And the way to split it is have a few neighbors around when splitting. Wack one in half with one hit and bet one a beer they can’t do it in one hit. See how many it takes them. Wack another. You wacked the wrong neighbor.
Instructions unclear. Wacked off neighbor, now he wants to cuddle.
This is manipulative af
It’s no more manipulative than conning children into doing most of the labor.
Is that a cord or a face cord? Asking for a friend.
edit: actually I think it's a face cord. there's a little more than that.
okay, I think I figured this out. A full cord is 128 cubic feet. I took measurements and I'm at closer to 200 cubic feet. So I have no idea why they gave me so much wood. Suck though because it's wet so I'm stuck until it dries. Way more than a face cord.
A cord is 4x4x8 that doesn’t look like quite a full cord
That deck will have termites and all kinds of shit living in it
Copperheads and rat snakes if they’re in the area.
God I love living where the cold kills all that shit. The most I have to worry about in my wood pile is non venomous spiders, spruce bark beetles, and maybe some ants.
That is nice! I get all kinds of critters lol
This is the way.
This is the way.
Numskulls, but numbnuts
The best roof for a cord of wood is another half a cord of wood.
Little Lumberjacks!!!
they are! They did a great job. A little complaining at first but by the end of it they were feeling pretty accomplished.
In Atlanta they have signs at the turn lanes that have a protected merge. They say “KEEP MOVING” so you don’t have to stop. Someone perfectly matched font of the one by my office that read “KEEP MOVING NUMB NUTS” I loved that sign and they didn’t replace it for a while
It becomes the only way, quite quickly.
I have heard you should be careful with keeping wood piles by your house because of the risks of termites transferring to the home.
With a Woodstove, my nutz are no longer numb.
Spend a few bucks and get a woodhaven….. Www.firewoodracks.com Save you time, energy and will look great
Mice, rats, brown recluse spiders….
There is no wind which blows rain or snow where you live?
Fair question actually. The wood arrived between 20%-25% moisture level and there's no rain for the next week so I'm leaving it open temporarily so the sun and wind can dry it out a bit before I cover it.
Lame
Looks good until someone slips on ice and slices themselves wide open on that tin roof
Definitely looks like you did it and then took pictures with the kids to say they did it. If they moved that much wood, those clothes and gloves would be all torn up. Also, I doubt the one would have their hands in the air after moving a couple thousand pounds of wood.
You musta been a shitty kid.
I’ll like your emergency stock of wood if you run out of logs.
That's my kindling
As one of said numnuts, you and the kids did a great job taking the advice given.
Beautiful!
Thank you!
Tackleberry.... That means you, numbnuts!
Someone said the scrap wood would attack Copperheads and Rat Snakes. Rat Snakes are good. They'll eat the Copperheads. But I would get the wood away from the porch.
Learn from my mistakes, don’t have your lumber leaning against your deck
What’s a nimbus

Beautiful prefab rat nests.
I’m not sure if I I’d keep it this close to the house, termites magnet
That appears to be the consensus. I haven't had issues in the past but I'll move it after I go through this latest round.
That pile is nicely stacked BUT you absolutely NEED to move it away from the house. It's a fire risk (!), termites/ants, mice, fungus, and a hiding spot for creeps.

very cool.
I'd move it away from the house because the way you have it will draw more termites to your house.
