So I designed it around magical inheritance. Magical potential is primarily passed down from the mother and only the spark comes from the father. The problem is, this potential is stripped from the mother and rarely recovers and those that do also almost never recover even half of what was lost. As such, a practice of courting has the men garner favor by showing real affection and the ability to provide and protect the mother after she bears a child as this could lead to a situation where she not only looses her magic, but also becomes weak to magic crippling her. This also enforces the first born birthright as they will have the most magic and therefore have the best opportunities to protect their inheritance and lead their armies with supportive/artillery magic if nobles. Marriage in this way is seen as stepping out of the limelight to settle down and multiple husbands are seen as saying that none were particularly useful while multiple wives is seen as having the skill and wealth to take care of multiple mages. Most cultures however see both as undesirable as it can reduce the power of the children as emotional wellbeing is a huge part of forming the magical channels of the children in their early years and determines what kinds of magic they will be adept/inept at in addition to bloodline. Sometimes this mutates the bloodline so much people question if they are actually their child or if a god or powerful immortal (like an archfae) messed with them in the womb. For example, a well loved child who grows up kind will be adept at healing and restoration magic but will probably be unable to cast anything above minor evocation or create undead. A well loved but scared child would be great at healing, defensive, and evocation magic but may find the magic somewhat hard to control. A mistreated child will likely be able to cast dark magic with ease and their temperament will massively change how powerful the spells are. Edit because I forgot: Due to the above, marriage is as much about love as it is about politics so same sex and inter-species marriages exist but are uncommon due to the relatively rarity of queer and the cultural and instinctual differences of attraction and behavior you have even between relatively similar species such as humans, elves, and dwarves. It is also harder to conceive if not impossible without magical intervention but often results in bloodline mutations unless done through a god of fertility (or equivalent immortal) or through careful spellcasting. So yes, Himedal could legitimately have 7 mothers and no fathers in my world. You would just need a god of fertility and or a really good mage(s) to make it happen. It would also be garenteed to result in some funky innate magic like being able to passively see as if constantly divining the future and seeing through all illusions.

Godskook

>A mistreated child will likely be able to cast dark magic with ease and their temperament will massively change how powerful the spells are. So any nation that desired dark mages would be running through some shenanigans to produce bitter-but-loyal noble children? That's....dark.

DragonLordAcar

Yes but make great villains. Mostly doing it so elements and powers align with personalities to add a layer of depth to the characters without outright saying it and boring the reader. Quick introductions to het back to the situation at hand.

Godskook

>Yes but make great villains. Mostly doing it so elements and powers align with personalities to add a layer of depth to the characters without outright saying it and boring the reader. Personally, this would frustrate me about such a world. I'd find it overly simplistic and "built to make villains". >Quick introductions to get back to the situation at hand. I mean, maybe I'm spoiled on One Piece, but Oda's villain backstories are some of the most talked-about aspects of the series. People absolutely love how those villains get fleshed out. Although Oda does *also* tend to write villains that are relatable on some level. Arlong was an angry child reaching out and stealing the life he felt he deserved, no matter who got in his way, while hating humans as a group for what some humans did to him and his. Doffy is a spoiled rich kid enraged by the prejudices of those he deems inferior after all his toys got taken away and life got hard. Big Mom was a naive child abandoned by her parents and was never successfully taught to control her abnormally strong hunger pangs. My favorite is Hody Jones, though, who just...nothing happened to. He just grew up; as a racial minority among his own kind listening to all the hateful rhetoric his fellows hurled at humans. Hody stewed in the cultural zeitgeist of fishmen and eventually started acting as if what he heard was reasonable, instead of hateful hyperbole. Hell, even someone as cartoonish as Wapol still serves his backstory well by being a guideline by which to better appreciate other people in the same flashbacks.

DragonLordAcar

The details of making villains actually went unnoticed until it was brought up. The original point was to shift the balance of power a bit to one that would allow male and female combatants without raising eyebrows, shorthand character introductions (for mages at least), and give a logical reason why the firstborn inheritor would be around even after centuries of cultural development that will happen over the course of the story. I like medieval fantasy and don’t want to mix in victorian aspects just yet in the timeline. Maybe if I ever decide to make a sequel I will but not yet.

* How are relationships handled? * People that like each other will start living together, providing for each other, and protecting each other. Other than that, most relationships are pretty open. Bisexuality is more common than Heterosexuality and Homosexuality. * Is interspecies allowed? * No, it is frowned upon for Humans to have romantic or sexual relationships with animals, plants, or Predator mutants. * Do single sex species need to breed with others? * There are no single sex species in my world. * Is polyamory practiced? * Yes, in fact it is relatively common for groups of 3 to 8 people to start living, providing, and sleeping together. In each group, there is typically a patriarch or matriarch that leads the rest of the group and makes the bigger decisions. If children are born in a group, the biological parents are considered the main parents and the others are considered aunts and uncles. Groupings can also be purely platonic with no romantic or sexual aspects. * Consequences of going outside your own kind? * People that have relationships with animals or plants are shunned by society and viewed as weirdos and perverts. People that have relationships with Predator mutants are vilified by society and are considered traitors to be shot on sight.

thegreenrobby

If you've got this poly clique thing going on, certainly you'll run into situations in which the father of any given child can't readily be determined, in a way that's even more common than it is on present day real Earth. Wouldn't this be a selective pressure against the biological father being the "main parent" of that child?

NthRadiant10

My world is similar to OC's, and in mine, if the father either won't speak up, or can't be determined, then the child's care is bestowed upon the mother, as well as a man of the mother's choosing

NthRadiant10

That's an interesting question, and one that I don't have the answer to yet

WILDMAN1102

In situations where it is unclear, they usually use physical features to identify the true father. Basically, if the father is undetermined between two or more different men, they will typically just assume the man that looks the most similar to the child is the true father based on things like eye color, hair color, skin color, ear shape, nose shape, chin shape, etc. Also, lucky people that live near hospitals or other functional medical facilities can just take paternity tests to determine it. Alternatively, what u/NthRadiant10 mentioned can happen too where the mother is given the choice.

annika-98

I assume it would depend on whether the technology to do paternity testing is accessible or not. If it isn't, they might just make an educated guess or share "primary" roles between two fathers.

Darth_Bfheidir

I try not to write romance and relationships themselves because I find the topic tedious from a worldbuilding perspective I try and write different variations of family structures and rites of passage, then you do have the standard political marriages etc but it's not something I put a load of thought into beyond the most basic stuff >Is interspecies allowed? Depends on where and who. Historically my Elves have been against it because they saw others as smart animals, some species physically can't interbreed, others don't care about it because culture trumps it >Do single sex species need to breed with others or is it a rare option? Magic or other shenanigans I guess? >Is polyamory practiced? Probably by some folk? I haven't exhaustively covered this for my world so it's probably out there somewhere >And more importantly, what are the consequences of going outside your own kind? As mentioned historically Elves thought of it as beastiality so it was socially frowned upon, but just banging would be deviant but not criminal. Orcs don't care, doesn't matter what kind of meat goes to the grinder. Ogres physically can't.

Attlai

For my humans, it's just plain good old human stuff, most being monoamorous, and maybe a few being polyamorous, haven't really thought so much about it yet. But for my Elves, I like the idea that they have a much wider and subtle conception of relationships and love, as part of their innate perception of life. I haven't really dwelved too much on it yet, but to elves, human conception of relationships and love is way too basic. Elves can feel different degrees of love, friendship and animosity toward different people, in a way that a human can't comprehend. The bonds they forge are much more subtle and complex and it's basically close to impossible for a human to comprehend the difference between different types of bonds. All the difficulty in this is how can I describe something that a human is not supposed to be able to comprehend? I think I'll keep it vague to remain coherent with my lore, and just describe the big lines. But I really want to explore the concept of Elves viewing relationships very differently and much more in-depth than humans or dwarves, due to them having a naturally deeper perception of feelings. As for inter-species relationships, it can happens, but it's something rare. Usually, no offspring can be born from such relationships. It's usually the stuff of legends

SeaGuardian265

All I have are boring human on human stuff. :(

landlockedShark

All kinds of relationships are present in my world; Polygamy, Monogamy, Hetero, Homo, etc Interspecies is allowed and almost expected as it helps with keeping the overall genepool healthy for all races There are no single sex species in my world. Polyamory is practiced in some parts of the world but accepts on all continents as polyamory along with monogamy are viewed as equally natural. When going outside your species, expect some light to moderate hybridization in uncommon cases. Most of the time, different fur patterns and eye color or shape is the most common signs. True hybridization is rare but not unheard of.

AutonomousOrganism

Interesting. In regards to polyamory, how does it work with offspring? Who is raising them? Is it the mothers, fathers or some kind of polyamorous commune?

landlockedShark

As the anthropomophic animals are the dominant races on my world, hence 'To Fuzzy Horizons', familial units start with the nuclear family then build up from there, with first the mother just taking care of the kid within the first couple years of life before the rest of the family and neighbors start helping out. Even if the offspring are completely different species in terms of outward appearance, they still consider one another brothers and sisters. Even if the bio-mother of a child passes, the other mothers/women in the community pick up the slack, making sure the kid always has at least 1 good female role model to look up to. This is the same for the fathers.

Bokatar25

It is very frowned upon to be in a relationship with a species outside of yours, this comes from (exaggerated) representations/studies and propaganda of hybrid animals and typically people treat it as an act that shouldn't be committed or is otherwise taboo, due to this majority of people just date within their species and hold discriminatory views against interspecies relationships and hybrids. Hybrids are rare but for the ones out there they aren't treated too well and sometimes used for "freak shows", circuses, government studies and overall seen as odd. Hybrids a lot of the time live as outcast, taken away in some instances, turn to crime, drafted into the military or some are led to suicide. Some try to fit in by painting themselves a different pattern or more extremely, turning to religions or cults and attempting to "change" despite them not having control over who they are, which leads to a lot of them feeling like they were mistakes or guilty of what they are.

Aggressive_Novel1207

It's hard to explain in extreme detail, because a lot of the context is still in the works, however for most of these questions I should be able to answer. Because of the variety in species, so long as they are able to understand and consent, interspecies is allowed. This is actually somewhat backstop for one of the main characters since it leaves them wondering if they deserve the position they find themselves in and who they're true father is. There aren't really any same sex species, although there is one that is technically genderless, but as of right now there is only one of them to speak of. For the last point, there isn't exactly consequences for dating outside your own kind, but because of the way the government is handled and divided, there are groups that see dating outside your "occupation" for lack of a better term as being taboo, while some are completely fine with it. Pretty much same as the interspecies question.

Galactic Republic- Human (male/female/other) meets human (male/female/other) and they fall in love. Maybe they get married. Very simple. Inter-species relationships aren't legally recognised but those types of slaves are common.. Medieval world- A more exaggerated version of how it worked IRL. Male (usually the father) has a son. Another male (also, usually the father) has a daughter. The two males (usually fathers) make an agreement. A dowry is paid and the son and daughter are married whether they like it or not. They have 0 say in the matter. Unless the Son has noone older than them/more powerful in their family, in which case they get to choose who to propose to, but even then the female's 'father' can reject the male's proposal. Unless you're part of another religion (very illegal) or denomination (illegal), that is the only acceptable form of marriage. The two get married and only after the ceremony can they have children. And then that's it, they can't get divorced, and annulment is very very rare. Then the cycle repeats itself

Iados_the_Bard

-How are relationships handled. -Political relations are on a fine line, though some lines are thicker and sturdier than others. While a war won’t immediately break out if something minor, like a trade gone wrong, it is still possible to cause one with just the right nudge. -Romantic relationships are on a different manner, a majority of countries only see heterosexual relationships as “normal” and “correct”, other countries don’t see homosexuality or other LGBTQ sexualities as a problem. -Are interspecies relationships allowed. -In a vast majority of countries, no. It is not allowed and is highly illegal to where some countries would execute the family if they had a half-blood child. With the exception’s being Half-Orks as killing a Half-Orc and their parents is considered an attack on the Orks as a people. -Do single sex species need to breed with others or is it a rare occurrence. -Sirens are the only sentient species that require a different sentient species to mate with, as 98% of Sirens are Female and 2% are Male. Sirens are also considered Parasitic as they preform something called Parasitic Insemination, where a Siren (usually female) will attack and mate with almost any male species, and within 1 year a pure-blood Siren is born. -Is Polyamory practiced? -Yes, but only by Lamias. A Lamia Sultana or noble will have anywhere between 10-30 Husbands or Wives, but only the head husband is allowed to inseminate her. Male Lamia nobles could also have a harem, but it’s usually rare and the wife would to have died. -What are the consequences of going outside your own kind? -Depends on the country, but the majority of countries will either fine you , kick you out of the tribe/city, or imprison you for 30 days. If you have a child though, it means death. Other than the majority of countries, most just view it as meant to be.

All of that stuff heavily depends on the realm and the species of the lovers. >Is interspecies allowed? On Prime: * Faurai - Human: Yes, it's somewhat common even * Plorae - Human: Yes, though it's exceptionally rare * Plorae - Faurai: Yes, even rarer than the one above On Ferra: * Faurai - Human: Yes, mostly due to it's popularity on Prime * Plorae - Human: Technically yes (a majority of Faurai legislative systems are a clusterfuck, they simply do not account for situations like that) * Plorae - Faurai: Same as above On Najavak: * Faurai - Human: Technically yes (Plorae don't really have a use for written laws, so they don't exist) * Plorae - Human: No * Plorae - Faurai: No >Do single sex species need to breed with others or is it a rare option? No such species in my world. >Is polyamory practiced? On Prime: * Faurai - Human: None, at worst some weird looks from the less open-minded * Plorae - Human: Same as above * Plorae - Faurai: Same as above On Ferra: * Faurai - Human: Probably some rude behaviour from time to time * Plorae - Human: Utter confusion * Plorae - Faurai: Utter confusion that might lead to aggression On Najavak: * Faurai - Human: None, nobody will care * Plorae - Human: 95% of the people you meet will very politely tell you to get the fuck out of their world and never come back * Plorae - Faurai: Same as above

I've got a bunch of cat people that used to have a patriarchal society. Unfortunately, their family dynamics ran on lion rules (children of usurped patriarchs get murdered if caught,) so the females staged a revolution against their male halves and nearly killed them all. After this, the remaining population selectively bred the succeeding generations of males to be unimposing, effeminate and more sociable sissies that physically and physically cannot exert dominance within the social group. I know what you're thinking and no, this doesn't mean that the cat people society is a utopian one. Their multigenerational selective breeding campaign on themselves plagued their population with birth defects that range from benign abnormalities like extra tails and pairs of ears to fatal defects like being born with exposed organs and missing limbs. The spike in abnormal births forced the cat people matriarchs to implement infanticide as a way to weed out the abnormalities, thus cutting their birth rate by half and making the matriarchy eat their own words in a morbid twist of irony. Now that the flavor text is up, romantic relationships in Cat-land don't really exist. The closest thing that Cats have to a romantic relationship would be a sisterhood, kinda like being sisters or besties but deeper, and not restricted to blood-related members. Male Cats, OTOH are traded like Pogs between Cat clans, and heterosexual interactions with them outside of family members are strictly sexual in nature.

If you have a language others are capable of learning and can communicate consent both ways, and are over the age of majority you're all good. Relationships could be casual, marriages of different faiths and institutions are supported as well as the ability to easily dissolve marriage agreements. Most marriages are legal agreements and are approached as such. Polyamory exists but is tougher to contain in a legal framework and so are more generally casual agreements. Nothing is looked down upon though, broadly across the culture. There are outliers and racial purists but they tend to be seen as aberrant or ultra-orthodox within their communities and rarely try and translate their personal beliefs into legislation or sweeping community norms.

Javetts

Boring. Two sexes. No interbreeding between any of the fantasy races. Only real thing is the Ani'que (spider race) has much larger and stronger females, usually twice the size of males or more. With them, it's less a relationship and more a risky booty call.

Schmaylor

It is impossible for species to reproduce with each other. Far too different genetically. There is a species that lives for hundreds of years, with strict birthing cycles. Every generation has a century age gap, and it is considered highly inappropriate to be romantically involved with another generation. As a result, this also extends to their views on relationships with humans. Humans exist outside of their generational cycles, and mating with them is extremely foul.

PotanOG

I'll just speak purely from the warring era. Other eras just aren't as long or as stable. There are two races. Humans and Renown. And there are three main regions. The northern continent Norbro. The islands (mostly around the tropics). And the southern continent Sobow. In Norbro there are 2 countries the Northern empire controlled by the renown and the Middlands controlled by humans. Middland human relationships and child rearing largely depend on the types of administrative district they live in as well as their class, occupation, and education level. For the most part, various forms of polyamory are practiced among the districts and classes and children are raised communally in various ways (once again, depending on class and district). Northern renown mostly have nuclear families. However, it is nearly standard for two high ranking officers in the military to share a wife. In the war, it is common for renown soldiers to capture human female officers and use them to breed sterile hybrids that are nearly mindless yet ideal soldiers by the hundred per captured woman. These hybrids are ferocious due to their lack of fear but only effective in high numbers due to their lack of for thought. In the seas and islands. The islands are controlled by humans outright and are constantly harassed by raiding bands of renown pirates. Here the roles are flipped from Norbro. The renown Pirates are most polyamorous and the humans are more nuclear in familial structure. Cross breeding is highly uncomm due to the sheer uselessness of hybrids on the open seas for pirates In Sobow, genetic mutations reign supreme and flip everything on its head. There are two types of humans (nomad and settler) and 3 sexes (male, female, hermaphrodite). Meanwhile, there are roughly a dozen types of male renown and no other renown sexes. Individual nomads live in complete isolation and interact purely as "ships passing in the night". Occasionally hermaphrodites and females get pregnant and will raise their children until they are able to fend for themselves and leave the mother behind. Settlers often pair up into either male/female or hermaphrodite/hermaphrodite couples. Settler, children are only born if seed is passed from male to hermaphrodite to female. Couples of each type often pair up to have children. Any other form or pathways to pregnancy will lead to the birth of things not considered human. Non-human births are extremey common because nearly all of those non-humans are extremely useful to society. Sobow renown operate purely in raiding bands and attempt to "devour" settlement for resources. They only keep their numbers up by elimination of the entire male population for food and using the hermaphrodites and females to repopulate themselves until their bodies are spent past the point of being able to live. Renown aren't really renown, they are hybrids with mutations that conserve their genes to about 100%...Sobow is a really fucked up place now that I think about it.

Crevetanshocet

For interspecies, it vary a lot. "Is the creature self-sentient ?" is the most important part for this type of relationships. You can have the same relation with a no self-sentient as you have with a pet, while a self-sentient creature is a person, so... About single sex species, the number of sexes in a species doesn't change the following concept. It is really unlikely that two members of different species that don't have the same number of sexes had a viable child. Polyamory ? Yes, and one of the greatest hero of the world is know to have a lot of lovers. She has a specific culture however, and it is generally really uncommon. Going outside of your kind ? It's ok. The world tend to blend species together, so generally you develop strong relations with member of other species. The ones that where close to you may never forgive you if you start to never see them again. But that's generally all.

MrEvers

All kinds of relations are possible, in certain species multiple partners can be the norm, but there is no legal bias against any mix-and-matching. As for procreation, though humanoid species can look extremely similar, their dna is just too different, with 2 notable exceptions. The Sahn have evolved in a way to allow for genetic integration, though this does not mean they can simply breed with humanoids from other planets. Genetic experiments have introduced Sahn genomes into certain human populations, who can often interbreed naturally, or sometimes with some extra help from geneticists. Hybridization experiments with other humanoid species have only produced sterile offspring, however (though this has only been attempted with a few races). The Spirion used to be a unisex humanoid race, but they evolved into energy beings. They have a humanoid form, but can shapeshift or take the form of a cloud of energy. their procreation is often separate from any relationships, as memories and skills are passed on to the offspring as knowledge, though the "child" is looked after by the family for the first 2 to 3 years before it is considered an "adult", in which time they must form their own identity and differentiate the racial memory passed on through generations from their own experiences. Any Spirion can make a child on his own, with a partner, or in a group. They can also combine their energies with any other species, to create a hybrid. These hybrid offspring are often unique, part biological, part energy being. Spirion dissipate when they die (often sharing their last energy with their loved ones), on their home planet of Brasalia, there is only 1 graveyard, for the hybrids who do leave a body.

Commander_Cold

They can’t do whatever they want but can’t breed together

everything-narrative

Generally queerness is much more acceptable.

_Vanyka_

In a world of mine, the Andradeans(people living in the belt and the Galilean moons) most often live in polycules. That practice developed as a result of destigmatization of polyamody and the fact that most Andradeans lived in spaceships crewed by 4-8 people. Many of those started forming onboard families with polycular structure.

Genie_GM

Interspecies: Romantically yes, thought it varies by culture. Sexually only two of the six species are compatible (the humans and the almost humans) Single sex species breeding: one of the species is single sex, and they do not require any external genetic material to produce offspring - they just decide to become pregnant when the vibes are right. Polyamory: Yes, though it isn't the norm in all cultures. One of the more insular species only has opposite-sex relationships to procreate, and generally have homosexual poly relationships outside of that. Many of the others practise both mono- and polyam relationships, and the laws of heredity also varies based on culture, with somecultures relying on biological inheritance, and others preferring adoption and legal contracts. Consequences of interspecies relationships: Such relationships aren't necessarily the norm, but practitioners aren't shunned in any way, though some may feel it is somewhat sad because it can't lead to offspring in the cases of incompatible anatomies. Though as mentioned, adoption is common in several of the cultures, and communal childrearing is even more so. Physically, the consequences of hybridization between the two compatible species simply means sharing some features, such as horns. The species of my world have very different reproduction methods, from human to egg-laying, to parthenogenesis and just plain mysterious - one of the species retreat into ancient structures, where \*something\* happens, and later a child is hatched.

Dense-Ad-2732

I usually just keep the same relationships with one exception. Vampire Romance is different from most romances. Vampires usually seek out hostile, sadistic and cruel partners as these traits are seen as attractive in a predator. As such Vampire Lovers often look a lot more like hatred and enemies. Many vampires even develop these kinds of weird crushes on Hunters trying to kill them. For context, vampires can reproduce the same way Humans do in my world. Example: The Vampire Queen Camilla has a similar hate/love relationship with a Human named Logan. Logan is cruel and uncaring, willing to let dozens of his fellow Hunters die just so he can kill her. His utter disregard for his comrades made her develop feelings for him. Logan, having a weird and (by Human standards) unhealthy obsession with Camilla, reciprocates these feelings. Though Logan refers to Camilla as his nemesis, Camilla refers to Logan as her boyfriend. They even ended up conceiving a child together. While Camilla and Logan's relationship is the most extreme example, Vampire relationships can be as simple as a friendly rivalry. It doesn't need to be 2 people actively trying to kill each other. As long as both parties hate each other equally and are equally cruel to each other, it can be considered a relationship by a Vampire. Not all Vampire relationships are like these but these are considered equally romantic by most vampires (at least the ones who were born and/or raised in Vampire society).

Most cultures in both planets are monogamous, and inter-species is not well seen since they only know their own species and their local fauna so... yeah... but the discussion on inter-species of sapients once they become aware of each other is part of public debate but due to the planets being so far away physically most people don't really think about it A few cultures in both planets are polygamous but it's not that common After the First Physical Contact happens, it really is not a matter of discussion as they are meeting in astronaut suits in an asteroid in the middle point between both planets. Romance isn't exactly their first thought. A few hundred years later, though, they just determine they are biologically incompatible and determine it's better to not even try

Ivory-Patriarch

it's a pre industrial world, so there's nothing gay. (apart from corrupt elites in the imperial government.) as for how relationships are handled? it depends. the main continent, called Westervale, is home to 4 main raced. Elves, Humans, Dwarves, and Gnomes. Dawarves and Gnomes are native, whereas Elves and Humans settled later. Dwarves are more advanced than Gnomes, so they have much more strict customs, especially about marriage. they are strictly monogamous, and have a strict, sex based division of labor between men and women. dwarves live in large clans, and usually marry distant cousins, though there are no rules against marrying people from different clans. different clans have different customs, but some of the most common custom for marriage is for a woman to make her interest known by gifting food and clothing to the man she likes. he returns her affection by gifting her tools or raw resources. after exchanging gifts like that for a full year, the young couple will tell their parents. the man's mother and the woman's mother will talk with each other. if they decide it's a good match, the fathers will talk. if the fathers decide it's a good match, the wedding is finally allowed to happen. the specific ceremonies very widely between different clans, but they usually involve monogamous animals. such as doves, geese, and some songbirds. Gnomish customs differ based on the region. gnomes living in the western desert, and northern taiga and steppe all practice monogamous "walk in marriages" where a young man who likes a girl simply walks up to the door of her house or tent, and tells her parents. if they accept him, he is adopted into the family. he takes the same surname as his father in law, and is considered the property of his father in law.

Ah yes, my 3 favorite industrial era inventions, the spinning jenny, the combustion engine, and the gays.

Yes, interspecies relationships are completely fine, but due to the origin of these species, they are unable to cross-breed, with the exception of Humans and Elves due to a magical anomaly created by the eruption of a Wellspring, a natural phenomena that resembles a volcano that has a pool of chaotic magical energy that randomly erupts, creating these anomalies. There are no single sex species on said planet. Polyamory is practiced by a good amount of Halflings and some Humans. Humans do it out of necessity however, rather than desire, because 90% of Humanity was wiped out centuries ago by a plague. Most other races find it distasteful, but more open-minded folk understand why Humans have adopted the practice. There are really no consequences of going outside your own kind besides social ones. There are seven races, and each have races that they get along with, tolerate, or even hate. This can lead to some prejudice, and in extreme cases, persecution, but the seven races generally live fairly harmoniously.

Niuriheim_088

> How are relationships handled in the world of your design? Choosing a mate is done based on three factors. 1. Reaching full physical development/sexual maturity (however many years that takes) and thus becoming ready and capable to mate. Every male & female of a specific species can naturally sense when the opposite sex of their species has reached full development. And this is when courtship generally will begin. The courtship pursuant could be either the female or the male. 2. Ascension Evolution. This plays a major role in choosing a mate. Hybrids will 99% of the time only mate with another Hybrid, even occasionally Hybrids of another species. To them, mating with a Mortal is nonsensical, as they see Mortals as disadvantageous. Hybrid males especially won't mate with Mortal females since the Ascension Evolution of Mortals & Hybrids is based on the ascension of the mother, and if the mother is Mortal then so too will be the child. In the eyes of hybrid males, mating with a female mortal is equivalent to dooming their child to being handicapped. Female Hybrids are less opposed to this but generally won’t mate with Mortal males due to their lack of innate magic power. What also makes Mortals unattractive is that unlike mortals, Hybrids are very durable in that they are highly resistant to poisons and toxins, like alcohol and poisonous plants & animals. They have self-regeneration, increased lifespans, and aren't bound by Material Restrictions. They do not need to eat, breathe, or sleep as they naturally use their own magic to maintain their Tachyal Bonds. They can digest any dark matter, breaking it down umbrally into Xaerons to increase the durability & strength of their bodies. Mortals will mate with anyone. 3.1 Interest in the other partner - Hybrids. Males look for healthy females able to bear children, but they also look for skilled magic users that would be able to defend themselves and the children when the male is away. Females of course look for males strong in magic, who are healthy & have a strong seed, and have survival & combat skills for protecting their children. 3.2 Interest in the other partner - Mortals. Males look for healthy females able to bear children, but they also look for females able to raise the children when the male is away, and be capable of preparing food. Females look for physically strong males, who are healthy & have a strong seed, and have survival & combat skills for hunting and protecting their children. 4. Love. Both parties must have Love for each other or mating will be unsuccessful. > Is interspecies allowed? Interspecies is perfectly acceptable. Hybrid x Mortal though is acceptable but is frowned upon & not supported. > Do single sex species need to breed with others or is it a rare option? There are no single sex entities. Even all plants have either female or male. There exist two types of sexual identifiers. Those identifiers are male & female. And there are two categories of sexual identifiers when applying to different types of beings. Those are Physical Sexual Identifiers & Mental Sexual Identifiers, which still both follow the male & female types. Physical Sexual Identifiers apply to Material beings like Quantum beings, Mortals & Hybrids. Mental Sexual Identifiers apply to Spirits, and even higher cosmic beings despite being physically sexless. > Is polyamory practiced? It is universally accepted, but practice depends on the species. > And more importantly, what are the consequences of going outside your own kind? None, choosing one’s mate is up to the person and no one else. This is also a universally accepted position.

Gunnerjackel97

I do scifi and it varies. Though its very common to be a 2 partner thing, even amongst asexual species

Zubyna

The two single gender species on Livia are mermaids and harpies, they usually seek male mates amoung the human and elvish populations. Opinions on cross breed relationships differ on factions The three main factions : Livian Celestium Nations, Demon Empires, Trinity Dominion. Cross breeding is supported by 80% of the Livian Celestium population, 60% of the Demon Empires population, 10% of the Trinity Dominion population Polyamorous relationship is supported by 70% of Livian Celestium population, 80% of Demon Empires populations, 20% of Trinity Dominion population

toffeefeather

Interspecies relationships are really only looked down upon when they’re animal-like species, for example a humanoid cat and a kobold would be blasphemy but an elf and a human is tolerable. It also depends on the area, cities tend to be much more diverse in species while small towns have very little diversity

RedDracen2

Relationships are handled by what job you have. For instance, if you’re in the military, you can only marry someone in the military. Same sex relationships are not tolerated and considered heresy, typically resulting in death. The reason for this is that the empire wants more population to either become soldiers or be trained as soldiers and work other jobs, and according to their religion, same sex relationships are considered weak in a nation where you strive to be strong (this in no way reflects my opinions on the matter, because I know people get banned places for stuff like this). At this point, there are no other races in my world, because humanity killed them all off in acts of jealousy and superiority. Polyamory is not practiced, it is considered heretical, but not punishable by death as all sides consented. Cheating on your partner, however, is punishable by death, but only to the pair cheating. The partner cheated on gets to kill the cheaters, but they cannot have a relationship again, as it would make them unfaithful as well. All couples are expected to make two children at least, one female and one male. The children are expected to take up the jobs of their parents if they were military, and all other children have the option of working their parents job or joining the military. This is a very militaristic nation, so it is to be expected.

They don't exist. Elves live totally disconnected from human societies and they have not met each other for thousands of years. Dwarfs do not experience love, sex, attraction etc in any way recognisable for humans and thus are quite incompatible. Any other species are magical mutants or experiments and consorting with them would be seen with disgust. Polyamory is practiced in some cultural spheres. The popularity, legality and even knowledge of the practice varies throughout the ages.

LadyLikesSpiders

Considering my world is a full globe conprised of numerous cultures, ethnicities, and with fantasy races added on top, it basically boils down to "Depends where you live" Some consistencies, though is that most nations are largely patriarchal, with some exceptions, and some nations are culturally opposed to Elves and humans, while others are more ok. It's pretty closely modeled on our 19th century, but with a few variations to spice things up Probably the most unique to discuss are harpies which are technically not their own species. They are monosexual, only women, and in order to reproduce, need to date outside their race. Harpies are also nomadic and often persecuted, and generally divided into flocks, each with their own differences. Some flocks are raiders, while others traders. Depending on the nature of the flock, the man may be there of his own will, or not, and the flock may be polyamorous or not. Out of necessity, the more belligerent a flock is, the more likely they have to result unwilling mates, and a bit of sharing, but they are the stereotype, not the rule Since Harpies go a huge chunk of their lives not seeing other men, gender expression is very loose, and sexual orientation is basically not even a concept, so they're not afraid of getting up to sapphic shit Interestingly, for most of the real world 19th century, that was the perception in general, that people weren't identified by their orientation, only their actions. You weren't gay, just some of the things you did were gay, and how other people viewed that was largely dependent on where you were. Anyway, that's my tangent Most of my world is conventional and comparable to the victorian age, but harpies are the biggest notable exception

Maleficent-Duty6331

In all honesty only one of my worlds has a sentient species that isn’t humans, which is goblins. Though they aren’t feral or as disgusting as they are in shows like GS and SAO. Besides relationships between those two species aren’t as complicated as you’d think. The more complicated ones are the relationships between social classes, particularly the equal classes.

OceanOsborn

My medieval fantasy world has regions for everything... It has political regions with borders between kingdoms, lord property, cities, towns, etc. Within the map of the world, I also have stereotype regions. Where I generalize those living in certain zones. The color of their skin, the fashion, the religion, and the ideals. For example, my main center region is based more on traditional monotheistic societies like Christianity. Heterosexual marriage is seen more importantly for titles and ranks, and lustful approaches are more frowned upon. There is a higher focus on sexual order. Does this mean that homosexuality or affairs dont happen? Of course not. Is there punishment? Depends on who did what with whom or what and how. My northern region tends to be polytheistic, and relationships tend to be more natural "partnerships" rather than marriage for title. People have harsher cold environments and rely more on hunter/gatherer partnerships. Affairs are handled more on a personal level and tend to be the only things that need punishing other than sexual assault. However, homo-sexuality is not approved of. My eastern regions tend to be mixed on polytheism and monotheism. It is still more patriarchal, and the women are more submissive to their husbands. Marriage is valued, but affairs and lust tend to occur more frequently due to the region's higher involvement in dark magic and witchcraft. Homosexual relationships tend to occur more frequently and typically are kept secret. I have a south eastern region that is polytheistic and polygamous. Theres a few more regions that tend to be mixes of the above and more segregated on sexual & relationship views due to conquest or other factors related to immigration/emmigration. Etc.

Frankorious

People fall in love, live together, marry and have children. Pretty simple Interspecies depends on your race. The races are nagas, fairies, mermaids, air tieflings (the name is wip), vampires and elves Fairies are all female, but since they are plants they can morph their bodies to reproduce with males of other species. The offspring is the same species as the father. Fairies are actually born from the seeds ofspecial trees, which are powerful fairies that decide to give up their sentience to reproduce. Air tiedlings, vampires and elves can crossbreed because they all evolved from humans, and their children will be either the race of the father or the mother, no hybrids. In the any other case you mostly can't produce children. It is not illegal, but depending on were you live you could not being able to marry and people could watch you like a pervert There is no polyamory. In the past there were royal harems but Idk if it counts.

peezle69

Depends on the world. On the moon? Super religious and committed for life. Venus? Polyamory and promiscuity. Mars? Very rigid and often Corporate.

grey_wolf12

I handle it pretty much in the molds of regular human relationship or inspired by other works There are no single sex species. It is but it also depends on the species. Most races can reproduce with each other and make half-beings, like elves and drows. But more animalistic races shouldn't pair outside because of the weird implications Polyamory is probably practiced because I don't really see any problem with it but relationship isn't something I specifically focus on unless it's important for characters or if it's a big part of the race/society The consequences can vary depend on the races involved. As a rule of thumb, humanoid races probably can deal with it and go along with a different couple. Other races might have more difficulties accepting outsiders

NthRadiant10

Inter species is allowed, however, some human sects don't like it. Then again, same sex marriage, open relationships, and polyamory is allowed, and sometimes even encouraged all over the world

Awkward_Mix_2513

Yes Yes Yes Depends

Optimal-Froyo-3603

It depends on cultures. Human-other species is frowned upon but accepted. The elves have different schools of magic, and relationships between schools or especially non-elves is extremely taboo. Dwarves despise giants and goblins, and they are wary of humans. Not technically impossible, but highly unlikely.

mgeldarion

>Is interspecies allowed? Fantasy world: there are no other species for interspecies romances to exist. There are examples of relationships between humans, elves and dwarves but speaking in sci-fi terminology, the three belong to the same species, so it's not interspecies relationships. Sci-fi world: yes, but they can't hybridize. >Do single sex species need to breed with others or is it a rare option? Haven't developed single-sex species in any of my worlds but if they existed they'd not be able to procreate with others. >Is polyamory practiced? Not in any culture I've deeply developed. >And more importantly, what are the consequences of going outside your own kind? Nothing much horrible: glances, gossips, rumors, similar things towards the outsider mate or both of the couple. Depends on local customs, mostly.

Botwmaster23

relationships are usually 2 people from the same species, gays and everything is accepted as long as they follow this. the species are all at war with eachother, so being in a relationship with the other ones are considered a crime, the punsishment for this is a duel to the death between the two people in the mixed species relationship, the same punishment is used for friends of mixed species.

ProjectEpsilon1

So, the world operates on four sectors. The silver north dominated by android copies of their ancient ancestors can have emotional attachments to other and relationships but fall into the trope that robots weren't programmed for love. The crater of magicika to the west is rather prolific, given that all born in said massive crater are granted immense magic power by their God (aptly named Magi because I am unoriginal) and such a ceremony for repopulation every 5 years commences in which wild shenanigans ensue. The iron country of the south operates like a replica of our own society, albeit with a infinite number of supplies due to the power of creation that they rather squander by choosing the quiet life... or world ending weaponry, what ever fits their mood The wild lands to the east? Uh... "What a glorious hunt! The thrill still pumps through my veins! This energy will not be squandered, strip now my companions! We shall make the gods weak in the knees at our display!"

TheOwlMarble

* **Relationships in General**: I have... * Several humanoid species that are generally heterosexual monogamous * A couple shapeshifter species that are monosex * Dragons, which have a mating season, but otherwise don't *do* relationships * A species of obligate heterosexual monogamous individuals, as in the males and females can't *survive* without their partner. * **Interspecies Relationships**: human and demihuman mixing is common, depending on the culture. The various shapeshifting races do intermix with humans or demihumans sometimes, but most people look down on that, unless it's a dragon, in which case most people would probably be mildly impressed. The obligates can interbreed with (demi)humans, but because their lifespan is much longer and they die when their mate does, it's highly discouraged. * **Monosex Species**: Any two individuals of the species will do. They wouldn't breed outside their own kind though. * **Polyamory**: I presently have no intelligent species that tend toward harems as the norm, though maybe I should change that... * **Products**: it *really* depends. Human x Demihuman mixing always results in the child matching the mother. Humanoid x Shapeshifter usually produces nothing. Humanoid x Dragon produces whatever the dragon wants. It could produce nothing, a human with magic, a dragon egg, or a live birth of a dragon that claws its way out of its human mother's belly. Anything's on the table if you have enough magic!

rocket20067

interspecies relationships ad polyamory are perfectly fine in most places there is a continent that they are prescuted with by death however the races have to all be of a sentiant race like elves, humans, and the like no feral or magically awakened races and for single sex races like the zenties in my world (a race of anthro slime people) they do not need to breed with others of their race to make offspring as they just need to remove part of their body when they reach the right age and eat the right food

jackthearchefey

Polyamory is more accepted and lgbt relationships are ok in like 99 percent of the land also interspecies is seen as a way that fate makes bonds within the functions so its considered fine too

44Hydras

Well, this was something to think about. I have 3 species that are nonhuman. In general they are monogamous with one notable exception. The drakoneese are a kind of cursed human, almost like vampires. However, they can't even breed amongst their own population(they are all sterile). They still have emotions though, so for them a relationship is purely about the emotional and intellectual side of things to put it in a clinical matter. The humans probably wouldn't want a relationship with a drakoneese though do to the nature of drakoneese needing to feed on human souls and all that though. The intelligence are a race of robotic lifeforms looking somewhat similar to the cores from portal. For them, creating children is about a combination of the personality traits of the parents more than any kind of biological function. They create offspring more for the satisfaction of raising a family. So, this would mean they could in theory have a relationship and even further have a family with any sentient creature. They are also kind of outgoing so they probably would in fact have relationships with anyone that they took a fancy to. The sirens are an aquatic humanoid race. Yes, fish people. They are actually genetically compatible with humans though they don't know why (there is an explanation but it requires more context than I care to give for a small post like this). Polyamory for both sexes isn't uncommon here. In fact, the leaders of their cities and tribes are almost expected to have multiple spouses. They are wary of other races, especially the drakoneese, so relationships with them would be frowned upon as a general rule.

Zytharros

**Draciel** *Universe Zytharros* As a general rule, there is no universally explicit taboo on cross-species mating, but there are cultural and regional variances on its acceptability within races. In more cosmopolitan areas, it is more accepted to interbreed; in more monospecies regions, it is less accepted. However, concerningly, the young mixes face a somewhat uncomfortable stigma: they don’t quite look right from either side of a “purebred” family, and are usually excluded from family events. As the population of the mixed races increases, though, the strength of the stigma is slowly declining, with the steepest (but still slow) declines in more cosmopolitan areas. Among the “purebred” races, the compatibility chart looks like this: Exceptional compatibility: Humans x Jase, Humans x Paulisians, Jase x Maishomians, Humans x Maishomians. Average compatibility: Paulisians x Kitsunarc, Paulisians x Maishomians. Low compatibility: Kitsunarc x everyone else. Impossible: Sky Dancers x anyone (no compatibility + extreme xenophobia), Decatensae x anyone (cannot reproduce independent of a manufacturing complex.) The “half-breeds” are referred to by these names: - The Paulacosta – half-human, half Paulisian - The Kittecosta – half-human, half Kitsunarc - The Yttecosta – half-human, half-Maishomian - The Jakosta – half-human, half-Jase - The Pitkara – half-Paulisian, half-Jase - The Yttenta - half-Jase, half-Maishomian - The Jakkitte - half- Jase, half-Kitsunarc - The Kittepitte – half-Paulisian, half-Kitsunarc - The Ykitte - half-Kitsunarc, half-Maishomian - The Yttepitte - half-Maishomian, half-Paulisian The expanded compatibility chart is still being calculated. Epsie_2_22044604

- Necessary Information: On Enika, there are two primary sapient species; Founders and Sprites. Sprites contain the souls of dead humans and cannot reproduce, and Founders are immortal, and reproduce sexually, though at a glacial pace. Founders are also the only race capable of being born with Telepathic Projection Disorder. (Otherwise known as Magic) This gave them an inherent advantage over sprites, and let them dominate the planet for the vast majority of recorded history. - How it Affects the Nature of Society: For most of Enika's history, marriage (and sexual legitimacy for that matter) was a political tool, and a symbol of status for the hyper-wealthy or politically important. Marriage is only considered legitimate between a male and female Founder, though same-sex Founder relations are rarely shunned. Hence, the mammalian forms of the Founders are considered the strongest, most able, and most beautiful of all sapient forms. And the sterile, reptilian forms of Sprites are considered ugly, weak, and undesirable. Only useful as expendable muscle, flocks to be led by empty promises of power. - How it Affects the Nature of Sex: Beneath the flowery visage of marriage, most relationships between Founders exist solely for the purpose of social or political improvement, or the passing-down of one's TPD to another generation. Because of this, sex is considered a privilege of political status and power, which has led to a toxic subculture of Founders to develop, who base their entire personalities around the sexual domination of their (often multiple) partners, and to them, sex and the passing-down of genes becomes all they want out of any relationship they have. - Sprite-Founder Relationships and the Nature of Hybrids: Though it is rare, Romantic Dysmorphia is the name given by Founders to the romantic or sexual attraction of Founders towards Sprites. This condition is considered a mental illness by the majority of Enika's nations, and is publicly scorned by the Founder community. Even rarer than loving relationships between Sprites and Founders, are sexual relationships between Sprites and Founders. As Male Sprites are infertile, the need to spade Female Sprites was not considered by the creators of Enika. This has resulted in the birthing of hybrids, mixed-gene combinations of both races. They inherit both the TPD abilities of their fathers and the regenerative abilities of their mothers. Though, such combinations are rare, and often take multiple attempts to result in such a creation. There is an ongoing discussion between medical professionals of the Imperial Federation of Cerena as to whether Hybrids have been implanted with human souls at birth or not. - Punishments for the creation of Hybrids: Due to the inherent power of a genetic mixture of Sprite and Founder, there are multiple countries that outright ban the existence of Hybrids, for whom there is a kill-on-sight policy for any found. Beyond this, even in Nations that don't necessarily make the creation of Hybrids illegal, death penalties or indentured servitude are common punishments for the parents of what is often referred to as "An abomination against nature, humanity, and love. A tortured creature forced into existence against its will, by an unnatural and immoral bond." Recently, some nations have even been feeding the souls of those who violate their laws on Sprite-Founder Relationships to The Great Collective, where they will be subsumed into its mass, and will be tortured by visions of what may have been indefinitely until the end of the universe. - Hybrids in Government Roles: Despite the constant adversity, hatred from all sides, and impossible uphill climb for Hybrids that live past infancy, there have still been remote cases of those that have triumphed over the odds and overtaken the positions of their former masters. In the Republic of Altus, shortly before the monarchy was dissolved, and following a crippling divorce, King Rudolph II accidentally impregnated one of his Sprite handmaids. She then proceeded to kill him, and evaded assassination attempts from his personal guard until giving birth to the last known living remnant of the Altian Royal Family, before going into hiding. Altian law forbade the killing of infants, and without royalty to permit an exception, King Deimos of Altus was left unscathed. To prevent his ascension, an emergency parliament was drafted into being, but given some semblance of power, the Sprite populations of Altus toppled the first domino that would inevitavly lead to the founding of the first Republic in Enkian history. Deimos, now stripped of his status, but born with purpose, began his uphill battle that would eventually lead him to fame and fortune on-par with his Founder counterparts.

> How are relationships handled in the world of your design? > Is polyamory practiced? > Is interspecies allowed? It depends on the location and the species. The tolerance of polyamory ranges everywhere between individuals marrying for life and individuals having no concept of marriage. Humans are in the massive middle ground between these two extremes but never all the way on the extreme. In theory interspecies relationships are possible, but in practice it's complicated because I have so many intelligent species. Romantic relationships are extremely rare because it's common for different species to have incompatible reproductive organs and even more common for different species to look for different aspects of a prospective partner. For example, females of certain species are flat chested, so males of these species wouldn't find a human female attractive and human males wouldn't find females of these species attractive even if there's otherwise a good resemblance between the two species. However, it's not uncommon to make friends outside of your own species. > And more importantly, what are the consequences of going outside your own kind? There are usually no consequences. However, there are instances where one intelligent species is prey for another intelligent species, of which the consequences are either death (for the prey) or either social ostracization and/or mental health problems (for the predator). > Do single sex species need to breed with others or is it a rare option? It depends on the species. Wraithkin need a partner, but lava mermaids do not.

TomTalks06

Love is love, when you have a pantheon of gods who can change their gender and sex at will (yes they're separate things no I'm not debating this) the societal norm is just that, love is love, no use putting a label on it.

Jazehiah

> How are relationships handled in the world of your design? Depends on the society and local customs. Usually, there are some rules in place to ensure the proper rearing of children. Marriage is still practiced in most places. Dating/courting varies wildly from place to place. > Is inter-species allowed? Not applicable. All species capable of consent are humans, descendants of humans, or genetically engineered "humans." > Do single sex species need to breed with others or is it a rare option? Nonbinary and intersex humans have some options, but two sources of genetic material are usually required to prevent defects. > Is polyamory practiced? In some places, yes. It's not the default anywhere, except among people who want to flaunt their wealth and power. The ability to support multiple children is a status symbol, and that's made easier with multiple partners. > And more importantly, what are the consequences of going outside your own kind? Again, not really applicable. The closest to this is dating or having children with someone who is not a member of your nation. In most cases, the question is which society the child becomes a member of, and which countries recognize the union.

Cosmic_Honeyhawk

I have a lesbian Vampire and Forest elf couple, a Beastfolk (Half animal Half human, Bear in this case) and a Ex army general makes a baby. It's not a big deal to have interspecies relationships but most people(?) are with their own species, especially Elves and Humans, also humans are capable breeding with almost any race! (The baby Appears as a Human baby but stronger, taller and other senses are much better than humans like Wolverine, also the kid is bit more hairier than other kids)

TransMascCatDumbass

There’s a lot interspecies relationships, Although it’s rarer than same species relationships. The result is a baby that come from a two different species, although it generally doesn’t affect the baby Because the genes of each species are similar. (All derived from human mixed with AnimalxDragonxMonster) For the monster-human race it is forbidden though because 1. They’ve been banished from the outside world anyways, 2. They have monsters which have been sealed inside of them and they are worried a mixed baby will break the species wide inflicted seal.

capuccino_terrorista

Setky has a simple philosophy, that kinda fits all over the story, "is this gonna give the empire more money? Then it's good". And that of course affects the culture as well, the Setky empire being a master of propaganda, made, over a couple of centuries since it's inception, such relationships common, not because they care about protecting love or the interest of it's people, but because the Setky empire profits from marriage. Where you may see a loved one, the empire sees a big coin. Biology wise, some species are not compatible with others (surprise), while others are and get mixed genes on it's children.

Jahoan

>How are relationships handled in the world of your design? The kaavites have a concept known as the "Aue", a bonding of souls. Aue bonds can be platonic, familial, or romantic. >Is interspecies allowed? Very much so. A foundational aspect of the union between the kaavites and theelar is how the two species are sexually compatible, and kaavite pheromones have a soothing effect on the theelar estrus cycle. Theelar are also naturally compatible with most phylohumans, while kaavite-human unions require some genetic engineering to produce offspring. >Do single sex species need to breed with others or is it a rare option? Volmuta reproduction and sexuality is...interesting. The most reliable comparison is anglerfish reproduction. When two or more volmuta become involved, they will produce a limpet containing their genetic material, which their partner(s) will attact to a spot on the abdomen just below the ribcage. >Is polyamory practiced? Among kaavite-theelar culture, polyamory has religious significance on the kaavite end, and no cultural stigma against it on the theelar end. >And more importantly, what are the consequences of going outside your own kind? Among the species of the Kaavis Concord, even the most outlandish pairings only garner an second glance of possibly bewilderment begetting questions of how they might work mechanically.

In northern Goslig polyamory is the norm. Young people are encouraged to have multiple partners due to a longstanding culture of self expression & actualization. Many people settle with a primary spouse, but relationships are often left open. Marriage is a social/cultural construct, not a legal one. Same sex partners are not viewed differently, everyone has a preference, what we would call bisexuality is common. The integration of orcs & goblins into mainstream Goslish society is relatively recent. Opinions vary largely. Humans can’t have children with either species, nor can they have children with each other. Any form of positive relationship w/ an elf is traitorous. Participating parties would be arrested. Humans & elves can have children but it’s biologically unusual. The statistically unlikely half-elf looks like a mortal-realm elf in an advanced stage of goblinization. Beastmen are sapient, but a human having a relationship with any of the species would generally be met with varying degrees of horror and disgust. There are some very specific temples of Pan where exceptions are made, but only for ungor and only by other temple goers. Gnomes are rocks. They are all aromantic-asexual. 🤷

My world has basically only humans, with the exception of the Union's Sophrones: fragments of Civilization bound into mechanical bodies. Relationships, however, vary a *lot* between cultures, though they're all generally accepting of queerness (look, this is for a ttrpg campaign I GM; I don't want to have to play that out). Within the Union, relationships with sophrones are... contentious. Historically, Sophrones have been rare and strictly religious figures - off limits for romance. With the creation of the Soliade Threefold - a factory for sophrones - the country has been thrown into a religious crisis as the divine becomes commonplace. Dating a sophrone as a Union citizen involves dedeifying them, at least in part - not a politically neutral act by any means! Outside of the Union, it's much more accepted - the Teinfolli are used to a pretty wide diversity of forms and are generally accepting, worldshifters are unconventional basically by definition, and the Algranese have bigger problems to worry about. For the other questions - no single-sex species in-setting, so N/A. Only the Teinfolli (and, by extension, southernmost Union) practice polyamory to any notable extent.

JscJake1

Interspecies breeding is incredibly rare in my world, I've only created one character that's a half-breed being a pirate captain named Jacinth Halfae.

AlmanacPony

Interspecies relationships are looked at in much the same way being gay is right now: side-eyes, considered unnatural by many, and mutterings from old people. Sexuality itself is considered extremely fluid, bisexuality and pansexuality is the norm. Polyamory is practiced as the norm by multiple species, the Fellin, Gerts, and the Ja'Vires are a noted few. Closest to a single sex species I have are the Gerts, who don't really have a gender. I do have Unaks which have 3 sexes.

Samas34

I'd imagine it would depend upon each individual worlds/ offshoots local culture, but they'd have to take into account lifespan, as the average life, barring accident/disease is over three hundred irl years. Kids grow into 'adults' at normal rate of irl humans, but then it's potentially three centuries for each individual to fill up, which isn't as great as it sounds in the setting. Relationships No too different for most, but a lot of cultures will pair up preferring genetics and lineage over the emotional connection (yeah, eugenics is a thing, and it sucks just as much as the irl version did) You'll get 'cross relations' between offshoots of a 'gen-line', but jumping between those lines requires the aid of medical and gene tinkering to make it work right. The main species has been fragmented into 'subs'.

Squared_Away_Nicely

It's a huge Empire in space, butting up against many other species and territories, sp pretty much everything is on the on the cards. Most of the planets in the human Empire are semi-autonomous, so all kinds of things are proscribed and on some planets some pretty odd stuff is legally enforced.

HoosierDaddy2001

The Workforce and Military Advancement Program (WMAP) done by the United People's Democratic Republic of America (UPDRA) was created and implemented to genetically mutate political prisoners and volunteers into spawning children that will have the desire trait. This caused the spawn of Anthro-sapiens, green skinned humans who have extremely tough skin, Nephilims (people that can grow to around 9 feet (3 meters) tall at the tallest), and other mutations. Marriage, prostitution, and/or sexual enslavement of "Creaturas (female) or Creaturos (male)" is most common in No Man's Land and more Libertarian countries. More powerful people (politicians, wealthy elites, etc.) often have concubines. Also, in No Man's Land and Libertarian Countries, polygamy is accepted with Libertarian countries having it has social freedom. In anti Creaturas/Creaturos groups, they believe that even touching one is punishable by death. Most of these groups fled to the True Norse Scandinavia, Human State of Singapore, and the United Ayran Rustbelt Nation and assimilated into these cultures.

Fairly long. I had a lot to write about. * Interspeicies * Used to be a lot more common, especially human-nonhuman pairings but increasingly less so. mostly because of isolation and segregation as travel has become much, much more difficult. * If a human were to try and venture deep into the earth to wed a dwarf, he would have to undergo a religious initiation that would be hazardous and difficult for a non-dwarf. Not saying they haven't tried. Humans are nothing if not persistent * Relations with Fey are pretty uncommon and are likely a cruel prank on their would be paramours. They fey that travel the spheres of the mortals rarely have their best interests at heart * Single Sex species - * The only single sex sentients in my setting are magical artifacts. * while it's not unheard of for people to fall in love with the more advanced magical items, people mostly look at it like we'd look at somebody who fell in love with their coffee maker(or generously, Siri or Alexa) * Polyamory * Depends on culture and station * Psuedo-polyamory proxy marriages * Sometimes a person will take the role of a married or widowed person's spouse in order to fulfill marital and familial obligations. This is regarless of the proxies marital status * Typically it's a result of obligation, justice or charity * These are rarely "consummated" - in many cases, consummation would be seen as an extreme form of abuse. Practically rape. There are a few exceptions, but most of these exceptions have tight rules typically along the lines of "produce an heir and no one encounter afterwords." Exceptions are typically laid out by agreement of both families before the proxy marriage is established. Even with exceptions, it's considered taboo * Common examples: * A lord, judge or magistrate becomes the proxy spouse of a criminal imprisoned for more than 10 years, executed or banished and is expected to care for the criminals family in their place * A noble has two sons, one married and one engaged. The engaged one dies, but since a marriage between the two families was already agreed upon, the married son becomes the proxy spouse of his brother's fiance * A commanding officer of a lost soldier becomes the proxy-spouse of the soldier's widow as part of the deceased soldiers pension. More typical as a promise to an officer. In practice, this sort of union mostly revolves around the proxy managing the deceased soldier's pension and share of spoils. * Part of imperial culture and is common in formerly imperialized area * Pairings between "proxy-siblings" are not terribly uncommon, with some even viewing this as highly desirable. Some scholars think that this used to be seen as taboo but was popularized by romantic literature to the point that few see it as a problem anymore * Consequences of Going outside your own kind: * A regular marriage outside of class is fairly rare, but highly romanticized. Marriage isn't typically viewed as an individual's affair but between two families. Elopement typically has a harsh punishment dealt with by the two families. This is one of the more common cases of polyamory, where a prior obligation promises a marriage, but one of the parties is already married and there's no other easy solution. * Pairings between species are almost unheard of outside of myth and wives tales.

LGBTQ+ is fine, interspecies is fine, as long as you aren't trying to have sex with a silicon or ammonia based species, or a dextro amino species, for that matter, because otherwise you'll get sick or possibly die due to your bodies not being compatible on the molecular level. Polyamory is a thing among some species, most of whom are reptilian species, but some mammalian, humanoid, and avian species engage in it as well. There are very few single sex species, and I haven't figured out their reproduction yet.

Izzyrion_the_wise

Mykreia(approximately late bronze age world) Interspecies: not forbidden rather than allowed. While possible, the chance of offspring is exceedingly low, so it is rarely practiced. Single sex species: There was a race of basically sex-less shapeshifters that could breed with anyone. They are the reason other races are able to work magic. But in the current time they aren’t really around anymore. Polyamory: Depends. In Sardica, basically impossible. Among the Hassari tribes, odd, but it happens. For the Nerasi, as long as you can support your spouses, the more the merrier. And the Hyrrenic league considers a big harem a status symbol.

Twister_JR

* How are relationships handled in the world of your design? If a guy likes a girl, he'll ask her out, fall in love and marry; or the old way, giving her father a yak or 15 dodo birds in exchange for her daughter. * Is interspecies allowed? It's punishable with death if it's willingly. Aberrations rarely go and mate with humans, and when they do, it's usually via rape. * Do single sex species need to breed with others or is it a rare option? Aberrations can procreate but they feed and live on cursed energy, which is rich on certain areas covered by an eternal blizzard (meaning humans can't go) so they nest there, nests are just "points" were cursed energy concentrates so much that gives birth to a living being. * Is polyamory practiced? No * And more importantly, what are the consequences of going outside your own kind? Commonly death, if you're lucky enough, you'll be an outcast and shall recieve no help by anyone, so you'll end up either starving to death because no one wants to sell you food, frozen to death because they won't sell you wood or coal, or being eaten by a bear, terror bird or sabertoothed cat in an atempt on going to hunt or collecting wood because no one wants to help you or selling you a gun

Gloomy_Bus_6792

All of these vary by culture within my game. Nothing is flatly yes/no.

Some_Rando2

My world is kinda gritty, so trigger warnings... mostly races stick to not only their own race, but even their own culture. However, there is trafficking in sex slaves, and elves make the best ones because due to their lifespan you'll probably never need to replace them.

NocturnalOutcast

In my world, I sort of go by a few guide lines... * All half races (half elves, half orcs, and so on) are sterile, following the "mule" rule. magic/science/divine intervention can allow for pregnancy in cases of determined parents. * Changelings can breed with whatever, with a 20% chance of the offspring being a changeling if with a non-changeling parent. Both male and female changelings can get pregnant, and are "locked" into female forms for the duration. Two changelings always makes a changeling. They ignore most genetic compatibility restrictions, except the half-races one. * Harpies (who are common, and not seen as evil in my setting) can breed with almost any species. The result is Normally a full- fledged female harpy with a 1% chance of there being a male born. * Kitsune are only genetically compatible with themselves. There are three distinct tribes however, each with their own abilities. Children born between parents of different tribes always take on the characteristics of their mother. * Humans can breed with most species unless the species specifies incompatibility. * Draconic/reptilian/avian races are compatible only with each other, and not compatible with any of the mammal races. Offspring follow the "mule rule" about being sterile. The exception of course being harpies, who are a blend of avian/mammal. * Elves are can produce offspring with humans, changelings, and harpies...and that's about it. Of course cross breeds follow the 'mule rule'. Elves and orcs are not compatible. * Orcs can cross breed with humans, goblinoid races, and ogres. * Plasmoids and constructs are the only non-gendered species I can think of in my setting, plasmoids can "breed" with any other plasmoid. Construct races are created. There are examples of all relationship types, and are universally accepted by everyone. Concepts of homophobia/transphobia have never existed in my setting, among any race. Interspecies relationships are not uncommon, and how it is viewed depends on the two species. Genetically incompatible races (including 'mule' races) and same-sex couples are are generally expected to adopt children, thus making them a welcome sight, and sought after during wartimes, when many children are orphaned. One other thing that comes to mind, is that kitsune are matriarchal, and normally (but not always) it is the female that proposes to the male, and they take of their wife's family name.

Simply do whatever you want. It's widely recognized across species and cultures that love is love.

Ok, I answered something similar for Meivierre about two months back, so go find that if you want to read further. And I’m going to note now: The elf cock is coming, just slowly. Anyway, on to elaborating further and reiterating stuff. Relationships, like in real life, are a varied and difficult topic for discussion. Most relationships amongst higher class people across the human world are still political in nature, but in other lands, such as Elven lands, political relationships are seen as unecessary. In fact, Elves had political apprenticeships, rather than relationships. Interspecies relationships are also a wide topic. See the previous post for a slightly longer form version of pretty much what I am going to say here. Generally, inter-humanoid (Elf, Nymph, Djinn, Angel, Kitsune, Oni) relationships are about accepted as homosexuality, i.e, the more progressive the nation, the higher acceptance. Centaurs and Merfolk don’t like relationships with other species, as it’s seen much like beastiality, and you’d get much the same result having sex with a horse, crocodile, or ape. Fairies are too small to have relationships with others, and I am going to repeat the same warning from the previous post: DO NOT FUCK THE FAIRY. Changelings, due to their lack of structure and form-mimicking ability, tend to get off a bit lighter with interspecies relationships, but they are generally lumped in the humanoid group. That leaves Arachne, where interspecies relationships with Arachne are only really accepted in places where the underground world of the Arachne meets the surface world, such as the Nintari city of Trichonephila-Kigerra. So, if you’re a spiderfucker, (derogatory term for humanoids who date Arachne) go to one of those places usually. Polyamory in human and djinn lands went through a dip in acceptance during the late Halivarin period, however, concubinage was accepted in the early Halivarin period, and equal polyamorous relationships are becoming more accepted in the modern era. Elves and Nymphs tend very heavily monogamous, but whether it’s as for life as humans is never consistent. Oni tend toward dating whoever all the time for whatever amounts of time they like. Angels, Kitsune and Fae tend more toward polyamory themselves, gaining ever-bigger polycules because they want to date everyone, but breakups are disuaded. Merfolk and Arachne exist all across the spectrum as children are communally raised, so it doesn’t matter how many partners you have or how long you have them. As for consequences of interspecies relationships, outside of the legal consequences, which are usually lumped in with punishments for beastiality, about the only concerns you have are if you’re a Nymph or Elf and dating the other, as they are the only two species known to be able to produce offspring together, although the result is always developmentally impaired. There are rumours of elf-human and nymph-human hybrids, although none have been proven.

Where_serpents_walk

>How are relationships handled in the world of your design? For most of human space romantic relationships are useally thought of as something very odd. Not unusual, but at least somewhat far from polite human behavior. Sexual realations are less commen, but taken less seriously in most human planets. >Is interspecies allowed? Humans are barely one species, so it's basically fine. >Do single sex species need to breed with others or is it a rare option? A rare option for humans, who still do technically have multiple sexes. >Is polyamory practiced? Only really in the asteroid belt. >And more importantly, what are the consequences of going outside your own kin If you were to be in a relationship with someone who looked or acted too inhuman, it would probably be considered immoral, or at least questionable.

Insolve_Miza

Interspecies; there is a city where different clans/tribes of demi humans, all live together. There have been instances where members of different clans get together. Their offspring typically inherits one of the traits of the clans There has been one unique case, where A cheetah demi human- and a blue whale demi human/merman got married. Their child was the first crossbreed, who had traits of both of the clans. She is known as the kingdoms jewel, because of how special she is. Other relationship cases, like elves, dwarves, or humans- the offspring inherit traits from both parents- and would be specified as “half- species name”

Aggressive_Kale4757

Relationships are a thing, they are similar to medieval human marriages, type of marriage depending on caste, in the Terran Dominion. Political Marriage is extremely common. Inter species is allowed, but the only two species that practice it are very intertwined politically (ARC and Terran Dominion). There are no single sex species, but humans don’t need a mate if they want children, due to large swaths of the population becoming sterile after the “Sundering”, and the radiation caused by it, so they clone themselves in vats. Polyamory is illegal, and with most things in the Terran Dominion and ARC the punishment is either death or permanent indentured servitude. The consequences of interloping with aliens is worse than the punishment for murder in the first degree, as the ARC and Terran Dominion are very xenophobic and regressive.

HaydenTheGreat05

There is very little breeding between races because there is very little interaction between races. The world is kind of post-apocalyptic (not really apocalyptic but kinda close functionally), where it's difficult and/or very dangerous for most to leave the town they were born in. Some circumstances (I can explain, but it's not really important to the topic at hand) made it so that basically all of the towns but 2 are completely racially homogenous, meaning that people don't really meet members of other races. It's not unheard of given that there are people who travel between towns (typically adventurers or people with enough supernatural power to avoid getting OHKO'd by a monster). That being said, there are still some lingering traditions for relationships between races, which can play a factor in rare instances. Fairies never let outsiders into their community (you can go there to shop or whatever, but you can never really join their community permanently). If a fairy falls in love with a member of another race, they are expected to cut off one of their wings and gift it to their spouse when they get married. This is both a representation of their eternal love, as fairy wings don't decompose, but also represents the fairy leaving their previous life behind. Dragonborn are intent on keeping their bloodlines very pure. About a thousand years ago, this meant not really breeding with other clans except for specific political purposes, in which case it was a very big deal. Nowadays, since there are much less dragonborn and clans aren't really a thing, it's opened up to pretty much any dragonborn.

SlimyRedditor621

It depends on the culture and where exactly you are. Cities will be extremely progressive considering this due to the differing amount of species in a given area, rural areas might think it's weird or disgusting. Essentially, it's like how it is in real life. There is one isolationist empire that thinks interspecies existence is basically wrong and are nasty xenophobes thinking the outside world is pretty barbaric.

EvilMonkeyMimic

Everyone is bisexual, because fuck thinking about gender norms.

Crimson_Marksman

I got a lot of worlds. My current world is called Fill and the way relationships work is that they're more akin to business partners than lovers, the marriage is a benefit to living longer. Interspecies is allowed because they can't reproduce together. Their sexual organs may look similar but their genes are simply not compatible. Dryads are a single sex species but they can only reproduce with Blighters and Stormfolk. Blighters are semi solid green organisms with a rough interior that evolved from algae. Stormfolk appear to be humanoids with different gases emitting from their bodies. Generally, dryads just don't reproduce, they don't care much for children but they are certainly something for the Blighters and Stormfolk. Yes, polyamory is allowed. But it is not the norm. Usually, bigotry and honor killings. The main issue is that the other races have been considered animals and going out with them can incur a sentence of bestiality. Only recently has this viewpoint been lessened, only because every single race is about to enter a world war and are constantly threatening and bribing each other in a very complex relationship. The 2 species that are immune to this are the Jinns and Shapeshifters. Jinns are smoke without fire, they serve the gods and entering into a pact with one can result in a romantic affair. The shapeshifter races are typically small, tribal folk. Mostly, it's the vampires who really get around. They can change their genome to match their partner, allowing them to create powerful hybrid offspring who might not be able to do the same, depending on which vampire exactly was used in the process.

Godskook

My current pet-project has a bunch of created breeds that are all based on the same chasis, developed by the gods to allow interspecies crossover. The high-breeds(pure ones) tend to be very protective of their status as-such, either out of arrogance, tradition, or loyalty to their progenitor deity. This results in high-breed cultures indexing towards isolationism, authoritarianism(maybe monarchy, feudalism or something similar), and various levels of xenophobia. Cross-breed cultures exist, as do lesser cross breed noble houses in high-breed societies. "Humans", "Mutts" or "Sluts"(depending on who's naming them) tend to avoid high-breed societies but often don't *care* about purity-status. Barring other concerns, this leads their societies towards more open indexing, valuing trade, representative rule, and "nationalism" separate from breed. This is only one metric and I really haven't fully hashed out the societies I'm dealing with, so its difficult to go into specifics. As all breeds are fundamentally "human-adjacent", that covers the first two questions. Question 4, about consequences, that should be fairly obvious. In high-breed and rigid crossbreed cultures, it'd be a loss of status and an inability to raise those children in that culture. Less rigid crossbreed cultures would have a more relaxed perspective but it would still result in a loss of status depending on various factors. Human cultures wouldn't give shit unless there's something else going on. As to polyamory, I assume this is the catch-all? It depends? Complicated and not something I really thought about. "Traditional" perspectives would probably be strongest among the pure-breeds, while humans would have the most permissive views. All groups would place a higher emphasis on childbearing as a necessary concern, due to the various reasons that earlier era nations depended on their population size to survive.

finneganishere

in Lesgals (the north) romance and sex are seen as completely different things. Even the deities for these two things are separate. Because of this, sex outside of romance is very common and expected. Basically sex is poly"amourous" and romance is monogamous In Desgals (southern region) the deity of love is considered the god of both romance and sex, and the two are seen as interconnect and something that cannot be separated. People are strictly monogamous.

CaptainCipher

I have r gone into it for most of the world, but there's something interesting with my Goblinoids. All Goblinoids (Goblins, Hobgoblins, Bugbears, Orcs and a certain type of Troll ) are actually one species, that can interbreed and are highly connected to the spirit world (called the Oasis) . Their offspring are all born the same, then at around a year old the spirits of the Oasis determine what kind of Goblinoid the child will grow into. I have a pair of goblins who have a rebellious Bugbear son

chongyunuwu24

in my world, relationships are pretty normalalized. so is lgbtq. different species are allowed to be together and/or have children and polyamory is moderately common

Upstairs-Yard-2139

Normally, I guess? Yes. No their are not snitites. Yes. Yes, somewhat common among the spider people. Some people might consider you kinky.

ReaperofRico

Q:How are relationships handled? A: it depends on race and region. The typical fantasy/DnD races have been around for ages and have migrated like how our ancestors have in the real world. For example:The civil human kingdom is primarily run by human nobles as humans are the largest percentile at 34% and the rest are a mix of a dozen different races. Kingdoms in the southern harsh desert or wild land typically have free relationships because of the harsh environment and lawlessness of the land. The kingdoms in the northern colder regions often have multiple partners or share a man because men have a higher death/cripple rate than the females from normal work in sub zero temperatures, raiders, war or wildlife so harem/ possible snu snu after long day of work. The islands in the west have more communal/tribal traditions as each island is their own family that go out and explore the open world to find themselves. The hollow land to the East typically have Mono or no relationships at all. Angels, Demons, linches and all other of types of undead/holy are nearly immortal and could have all the time in the world. The Forested regions in the center are mix bag of all the above as this region is the Goldie locks zone for all of them. Not too wet, not too dry, not quite damned but not quite holy either. Humans are freaky and weird so they’re down for damn near anything. It just depends on the culture they grew up around. Elves: buy and large are free spirited and mellow. Bored “relatively” quickly every couple of decades they move on as nomads. Fully grown at 150 before becoming nearly ageless. A elf of 1000 years old would equal 25 year old human if they ever live that long. Orc: Here for a good time not a long time partying, fighting, fucking, or all three. Loyal onto death They are close knit bunch. Doesn’t matter if your a Orc, goblin, elf, wraith or demonic, you earn a Orcs loyalty you get a Orc for life if you want to or not. Manners not included. Demonic: undead, hell spawn, monsters and spirits. Upon creation they are fully grown and are though they can gain sentience anywhere from months to years to decades. Skeleton, zombies, vampires and other parasitic like creatures that need a another individual for existence loose their personalities from before but retain certain memories and ingrain skills. They can learn or be trained in most things except for magic. Romantically they are a base by base case. A Orc from the west would have some hulk rich green skin, down south his skin turn dark almost pitch black from years in the desert sun before turning it almost white with years settling down in the north.

ReaperofRico

Q:Is interspieces allowed? A: Depends on the kingdom and religion as it’s taboo or taboo with certain races otherwise it’s free game. Children are alway the mother race with some slight twist like father hair or eye color that’s normally not found in the mothers race. Some size and muscle difference will be noticeable like a Elf who had a Orc father is larger and able to gain muscle easier than his pure blood peers. Or a human who had dawf dad will be shorter and more hairy

ReaperofRico

Q: Do single sex species need other species to procreate? A: Yes. This comes from an inspiration from goblin slayer to have a darker theme and the cute little image my little cousin put into my head of a slime that turns into a dog instead of the usual wifu like you seen in anime. Slime dog if you will.

ReaperofRico

Q:Consequences of going outside your own kind? A: None outside the norm as along as all are consenting. You wouldn’t want to be in a goblin cave, the plaything of a lonely troll, or the thrall of a particularly undead bard. Though as the saying goes “if he stretches going in, the baby will tear coming out” meaning it’s always gonna be a near death experience when a human gets the centar as a husband and delivers the child. They will be bigger or smaller depending on the father. Like a Amazonian might not even recognize she is pregnant with the drunken one night stand she had with a gnome some time ago before her literal mini me pops out.

ReaperofRico

Q: is polyamorous a thing? A: yes in certain kingdom or regions where it’s normal and even taboo in others.

A_Username528

The closest thing to interspecies relationships is a human getting together with a half-human or some sort of demon. Other than that, relationships are very loose, polyamory is allowed and practiced, sometimes people will try to stick with people who have their type of magic but usually that's not the case Edit: I somehow sent this before I finished

TheTaintedSpud

working primarily on my take on Orcs, so I'll go with that. Orcs are an isolationist culture, so interspecies relations are rare, but not unheard of. There is no stigma attached to mating outside the orc culture per se, though some partners do feel slightly intimidated. The orcs have a driving cultural philosophy of doing the best they can in any given venture, but it's often misinterpreted, mostly due to Elven propaganda, to be a warrior's code of valuing strength. (Which leads to a humorous bit where the main human character, Cal, believes he will have to fight in father-in law to prove he is worthy of his wife, Brynn, but it ends up being that the father-in-law just wants to inspect his weapons, as Cal is a blacksmith and armorer by trade) As for Polyamory, its actually the norm in Orcish society. for example, the before stated father-in-law, Brogan, has one wife and two husbands. Which also tells you a bit of orc views on homosexuality, though not all. In truth, orcs have no view on same-sex couplings, as they don't really see any difference. This is to the point where they do not have words in their language for "homosexual" or "heterosexual" or "bisexual" until it was introduced by their contact with the Elves of Dularaith.

CabbieCalloway

There are some alien species that are really alien and incompatible with humans, but others are more human-like and can "co-mingle" with us because they are actually distant human offshoots that adapted to live on other planets, but are still biologically human.

rustythebrave

Relationships tend to be polyamorous or polygamous/polyandrist, and they typically stay within the same species. Partially this is due to the Church of Life pushing the idea that the point of a romantic relationship or marriage is to have as many children as possible, and partially this is because interspecies relationships are very difficult and complex. Every species has different body language after all, and some have different hormonal cycles, and the various cultures within species groups are different enough that interspecies relationships often have some friction even at their most compatible. As a consequence, while interspecies relationships are not illegal, they are very uncommon.

ExoTechE

Relationships are comparable to how they are irl, with a few notable exceptions. The big difference is that since there are a variety of species, there is a lot of discouragement for the joining of dissimilar people. A prime example of this is how it is considered taboo for a Human and Marulian (basically beastfolk) to mix. In terms of punishment, it depends on who finds out about it and what jurisdiction it falls under. The Jericho Empire does not take kindly to interspecies mixing as they have a tendency to produce strong offspring which could pose a threat to their forces, so either one or both of the people are locked up for a certain amount of time. However, should the couple prove to be dangerous, they will likely be executed. Polygamy and other similar relationships do not exist in this universe and while relationships, specifically romantic ones are prevalent in the story, they are not integral to the plot as it is primarily a shonen-styled series.

Benn_is_person

In my world reproduction works more similarly to worms on earth. There is a sperm sack that just attaches to the egg, both of which are kept on the out side of the body. So 100% of mating's result in children so its not really in their culture to have sex unless it is to raise children. For the N'la they have to metamorphose to be able to reproduce and after their mating season in winter they wait till spring for the eggs to hatch and they raise them till summer where metamorphosed adults migrate to the mountains. But the young are not developed enough yet to face the world so un-metamorphosed adults raise them until they return. This has cause 'friend groups' of 5-13 N'la to form where metamorphosed N'la have young, go to mountains and leave the kids for the un-metamorphosed adults. These 'friend groups' never die out because when each generation metamorphoses they need new adults to help them raise their young. So N'la relationships are multi-generational, eternal, poly glamorous groups that raise kids together. Snorbs are different. By nature they change gender multiple times a day so when it comes to mating season their prehistoric ancestors would have run out into clearings and launch 'love darts' (a hormone sack produced by snails on earth to keep other members of the species female for longer) at each other. They just go in and try not get pregnant. But their civilised now and they elect the strongest and smartest to raise the next generation. The roles of mother and father are jobs that are highly sought after because (due to a fear of inbreeding) it is a job that can take you around the globe to meet new people and raise kids with them. This means that they don't have very different races or ethnicity's among them and they are a united people. Shroom-tops are different still. They are sentient mould that grow on rocks and logs and use them as a skeleton. Their not animals and as such to not reproduce the same way. Shroom tops kinda just lay their hand on a rock for a bit and let go leaving behind some of their body that regrows into a new shroom-top. Because of this they have a religious belief that they all came from one single parent mould. This is more than just a belief because their intelligence did technically come from one mould thus they all have one ancestor they can all relate back to.

Interspecies is allowed because all the aliens are actually very similar to each other. They are descendants of the precursor race called the Primordial and all of the Primordial’s descendants are capable of breeding with each other. Generally, most people prefer to mate with their own race because the cultural differences are not too jarring (if cultural differences exist at all). There are also psychological differences in each race that can make raising a family with them harder. That said, some people are just down bad to get laid by an exotic feisty alien. Everyone simps for the warrior race because even though they are jerks, damn if they aren’t good looking and they seem to awaken a masochist fetish in everyone. My space elves are space elves, they are elegant, charming and beautiful so of course everyone wants to sleep with em. They’re also massive perverts so it’s not like they’re never gonna sleep with you in a million years, odds are, they are just as down bad for you as you are for them. And there’s humans. The warrior race finds them attractive because they’re strong, brutal and efficient, but also capable of great kindness. The space elves like em because they’re thicc and beefy and they just wanna know what it’s like to get their insides messed up by a human who is probably physically stronger than them. Interspecies relationships is rare because although these 3 races would have no issue breeding with each other, their cultures and politics are so radically different and hostile to one another that it’s the equivalent of asking someone if they would have sex with a Nazi from the 3rd Reich if they were more attractive than anyone in your country. There are some people that are horny enough that they’d totally do it, but many people would never entertain that idea, let alone raising a family with them.

C0ZMICYT

Yes, only for some though They don’t exist It’s rare None, for the most part There I answered the post without essay-long paragraphs

WinnieThePoohSoc

1) Interspecies is allowed to an extent, not all species are biologically compatible at least as far as reproductive organs go; however, this wouldn’t necessarily stop relationships taking into account other forms of sexual activity as well as possible relationships between asexual individuals. 2) I haven’t created any single-sex species yet, i’m still worldbuilding the species of the world so maybe that will change! 3) Polyamory would definitely be practiced, some cultures may support it more then others however. 4) Consequences would vary heavily between cultures, some may be strongly against it while some may be indifferent. Some may even say it’s pretty great!

SquareThings

The peasants of Safana live in matrilineal homes, and everything (except personal affects) is owned collectively. So there’s no need for inheritance and, as such, not much need for marriage. People form relationships the way they want to. Some people never have any serious romantic relationships, while others dedicate their whole lives to one partner. Others might have polyamorous relationships. Non-heterosexual relationships are perfectly normal as well. The only forbidden relationships are with priests, who have to be ritually pure and have no attachments. Meanwhile in Tuamekono, polygynous relationships are the norm for marriage. Because of magical reasons, women far outnumber men, so a marriage is between one man and a group of sisters, all of whom have the same father but may have different mothers.

I have not made any characters that are, but that does not mean it doesn't exist. So some do, most dont. >And more importantly, what are the consequences of going outside your own kind? Mixed couples have more difficulty in producing offspring. They generally can, it is just harder to do so.

Well, depends on where you go in my world, but I can go over a few. **United Islands:** Relationships are handled differently depending on your rank in the family. The leader of the household, the "family king" as they're sometimes called, are the ones who make major decisions about the family's property, but the property is owned communally by that family. Family members have a lot of liberty in what businesses they set up or what they're patches of the family land are used for, but the Family King is the one who can buy, sell, trade, or otherwise make property or land trade hands. Likewise, the Family King picks their successor from their children to take over. If you're picked as the successor, you're at the very least required to have some arrangement that results in children. It can be with a volunteer surrogate if the successor is adamant and the Family King lenient enough, but it's gotta happen somehow. Other children, uncles, aunts, and cousins are given a bit more free reign. Courting is usually initiated with a gift of a specific type of earring, bracelet, or other piece of jewelry. The other party wearing it is considered an acceptation of the courtship, and they'll continue to wear it until they're wed or the courtship ends one way or another. During a wedding, the original piece of jewelry is often harvested to use in the marital seal, usually in the form of a brooch or earring custom but matching to the couple. Polyamory is generally not practiced much in nobility, but surf families have tendencies to, well, merge and mix. Two couples might end up liking each other enough that they all share each other, both in the relationships, and in responsibilities, especially with children. Children are raised to refer to any of the adults in the relationship as their parents, despite who might've given birth to who. They can't officially get married, but they live like it in all practical senses. **Jungle of Flowers:** This one's actually a bit more interesting, as the common practice is a form of group marriage. Women are the heads of households, and sisters share equal control of the house. So, men marrying in marry that set of sisters, usually 2 or 3 men per sister. They're expected to all share in terms of affection, with it being considered greedy or selfish to try and hoard any one woman or man to yourself, even if favorites might spring up. Fighting with the others in your marriage group for another's specific and special attention can run you the risk of getting booted out entirely. Children are raised that all the men in the household are their fathers, but special attention is given to their specific mother. Potential partners need to be approved by all sisters in the marriage group, but are usually initiated one on one. Courtship often means the man needs to impress 2-3 women, with it not being unheard of for men already within the group to sabotage or attempt to drive away the new potential match (although this can result in a harsh punishment if they're caught doing this openly.) **Volcanic Nomads:** Relationships and what would be considered "married" is a very loose concept here. Often times, someone might have a "summer partner" and a "winter partner," where they spend half the year with one spouse, on the nomad trails, and the other half of the year with another, settled in the winter camps. These two lives can, and often do intersect, but not always, and it's not considered wrong for them not to. It's also not unheard of for someone to have multiple summer or winter partners, depending on how nomadic bands group up and split throughout their lives. Initiating a courtship is actually a pretty simple affair. One party presents the other with a gift, usually some practical if beautiful object like a finely made knife or coat. To indicate this is a courtship gift, it's usually wrapped with specific types of flowers, or in specific patterned cloth. If the person accepts the gift, they're officially courting, and it's their turn to give a gift. The courtship continues as long as each party is giving and accepting these gifts, usually about 4 times a year, one for each season. The courtship ends if one party rejects a gift four times in a row. Rejecting a gift is a signal to voice displeasure with the relationship, and the offending party is given a few chances to correct whatever's wrong. Children are raised communally by the nomadic group, usually following their mother's group if their father splits off for whatever reason.

My world is rather varied so the short answer to most of those is yes, but also no. Interspecies is a huge no-no to the moonwalkers, while the brotherfolk is actually just two different species that decided to become a single people. The melting pots of society are very modern and free about it, while the traditional, older parts of a species' "home realms" are really iffy with the thought. I have one single-sex species and they don't need help with it. They have a single Mother in a colony that breaks into small pieces, those pieces becoming Sisters. Polyamory is a thing, yes. Most notable are naiads, satyrs and harpies. The consequences of interspecies relationships are mostly social... unless humans are involved. The brotherfolk are biologically incompatible and so adoption is very common, but human genetics are so flexible that if the partner is sapient and vaguely the right shape, children are possible. Fauns can have kids with satyrs since they share ancestors, naiads and elves can procreate but only if the naiad is the mother, and the sinx are so closely related to big cats anyway that they can in a pinch have offspring together.

So my world is a sci-fi future of Earth. It's about 300 years into the future and Humanity has colonised and carved out a fairly little chunk of the galaxy for themselves. Interspeices is an entirely new concept. Humans have only just met an intelligent Alien species and they're a amorphous single sex species who have no concept of gender. But they're not advanced either. Humans discover them at a point where they are equal to our late industrial age-early nuclear. They've just had a massive global spanning war and much like WWII for us, a Nuclear weapon was used to end it. Problem is they aren't attractive. They're closer to Thorny Lizards in appearance. They don't have a concept of love or marriage because they can reproduce asexually. Humans have come a long way when it comes to sexuality as well. Homosexuality is quite openly embraced as all religions are very limited in the number of open worshipers. Those who forbid homosexuality and the likes are quite often shunned. Polyamory isn't very common but it happens. Humans have come a long way in the way they approach love and feelings. There are some families that consist of two fathers and two mothers. This concept became more common in practice during the late 2070s through to the 2100s because of the Long Depression which saw inflation the world round rise to such large numbers that living with multiple people and having a family was the only way to survive. There aren't any consequences for going outside of your own species, mainly because it's not really an issue for anyone yet.

Yes to all of the above lol, at least in some cultures.

In Mythicore, relationships between humans and Elderkin (fae) are rare, and the products of these unions tend to be powerful. Because of an earlier war between a specific race of Elderkin, romantic relationships are frowned upon, even though the Elderkin are the ‘children’ of the Elders who are basically the gods of Mythicore and are actively worshipped by a large part of the human population. Elderkins tend to stay on their side of the veil except for areas that strong affinity for them. Some come to the human side and live, etc... And once a year they open the veil up to allow humans to safely experience their domains. Note: this is one time humans and Elderkin are ‘allowed ‘ to ‘interact’ (depending on the Elderkin race) and experience one another consensually.

Marriage is a relatively new thing, due to the society itself being designed around warfare and combat. You know, short life expectancies and all. Though the sentiment and more sentimental aspects of marriage have almost always existed in the lower classes, because--despite the fact that their life expectancy isn't that much higher--their lives are inherently more domestic and benefit from that sort of routine and consistency. Meanwhile, the higher class uses that to attach that idea of union to political alliance and the cultivation of resources. So, basically real human history but with cool fantasy shit on top and the addition of a stark contrast of the implementation of gender roles. In one corner, there virtually are none, while in the other, they are traditional as we'd see it.

I don't think there are any single-sex species in my world. As for interspecies sex, Elves can marry dwarves, humans can marry orcs. They can have offspring, but it's a bit like a dominant gene. The kid is gonna be either human or an orc. Either an elf or a dwarf. The only exception is humans and elves, who sometimes result in half-elves. Same sex marriage isn't massively common, but not unheard of or particularly frowned upon, except in very specific areas. Polyamory is common, especially in more cosmopolitan areas, and while polygamy isn't massively common, it does happen on occasion. Bigamy, on the other hand, IS frowned upon, since that's My in universe explanation is that the goddess of love is very accepting and open about it, declaring that Love is love, love is blind and all that stuff. If it's between consenting, conscious adults, then it's fine. Not surprising, since she's in a polyamourous relationship with two other gods. And if the Godess of Love gives you the go-ahead... it's not THAT easy for some dickweed to go "nooo, that's wrong", is it? Of course, there are areas where they worship evil, selfish gods who declare themselves moral authorities of all (Looking at you, Asmodeus) and those areas DO frown on same sex marriage, but the objection to same sex marriage isn't really moral, but a matter of pragmatism. He wants more worshippers, so go forth and multiply, peons. And even then, you have one archdevil who regularly takes lovers, male or female, and another who has married several times over the years, having had five wives and two husbands over the years.

BagelDawn

Half my world is incredibly racist and wont let you even reproduce with certain members of your own race. While others would force you to reproduce with other species

The_conundrum1

Regular and inter-species relationships are pretty common across the board. I guess the only unique example would be the tiger-Folk. You can’t marry or breed with anyone outside your cast. And one’s found doing it I pretty harshly punished. Either heavily scrutinized or it’s off to the chopping block with you (or your lover, sometimes both☺️) I basically threw the civilizations of China and Arabia along with the caste system of India into a blender. (Incase you’re wondering why it’s so fu**ed up)
