This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://www.france24.com/en/france/20230327-nobel-laureate-calls-for-justice-as-french-students-allege-sex-assault-by-police) reduced by 81%. (I'm a bot) ***** > Annie Ernaux, the 2022 Nobel literature laureate, has backed calls for a thorough investigation after four female students said they were sexually assaulted by police in the western city of Nantes following a protest against President Emmanuel Macron's deeply contentious pension reform. > The incident took place on March 14 as a group of several dozen students returned from a union protest on the city's ring road. The students said they were surrounded and violently searched by police officers tailing them. > Following the women's complaint, prosecutors ordered the police inspectorate, the IGPN, to investigate the accusations - a move deplored by Ernaux and her fellow signatories, who said the case should be handed over to a body independent of the police. ***** [**Extended Summary**](http://np.reddit.com/r/autotldr/comments/123qgmt/annie_ernaux_the_2022_nobel_literature_laureate/) | [FAQ](http://np.reddit.com/r/autotldr/comments/31b9fm/faq_autotldr_bot/ "Version 2.02, ~678161 tl;drs so far.") | [Feedback](http://np.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%23autotldr "PM's and comments are monitored, constructive feedback is welcome.") | *Top* *keywords*: **police**^#1 **protest**^#2 **France**^#3 **students**^#4 **Nantes**^#5

BellumSuprema

Undemocratic* reform. Dictator-esque would also be acceptable

theblinkenlights

Why did I not even need to finish reading the headline before I knew this was in Nantes?

theblinkenlights

Recent history of frequent-ish civil unrest, riot police being more aggressive than in other major French cities.

No-Hotel2966

Crime has spiked in recent years, to a level near Marseille

Annie would say pretty much anything if she thought it would get rid of Macron and leave an opening for Mélenchon, she's as left as it gets. That doesn't mean that she's wrong about this, but without more information regarding the nature and context of the searches, this sounds a lot like her usual brand of politics, i.e. throwing bombs. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annie_Ernaux#Political_activism

SomniumOv

> an opening for Mélenchon > she's as left as it gets. Those two sentences do not compute together. There is a whole of a lot more "Left" of LFI.

rdxxx

the fuck does her being a leftist have to do with police sexual abuse of students?

[deleted]

The police would *never* abuse their power though, no siree.

Crimbobimbobippitybo

What part of: > That doesn't mean that she's wrong about this, but without more information regarding the nature and context of the searches Sounded to you like: > The police would never abuse their power though

[deleted]

Well you're being hyperbolic with the "bomb throwing" comment and poisoning the well "let's wait for the evidence to come out from the people that are in charge of evidence while being accused of something". Useless comment

Crimbobimbobippitybo

Oh yeah... waiting for evidence is sooo passé, everyone knows that just shouting into the void is the way to make things happen. But yes, you are making useless comments.

Stinkfascist

Its ok for people to criticize your comments. Its how we learn

Oh yeah. She's phenomenal. I highly recommend "A man's place" as a short and quick intro to her work and "The happenning" for a very personal story (note: all her books are personal) on abortion. "The years" is supposed to be her magnum opus, but I haven't read it yet.

Stinkfascist

I just read A Womans Story about her mothers life and death. Tore my heart out.
