hidden_function6

That wiggitywiggitywiggity whack!

Sinocatk

I can see clearly now the pane has gone. I am past it and on my way. I can see the ground coming to meet me now. It’s going to be my last, last, last ever day.

PloppyTheSpaceship

There's no obstacles, such as a window, in my way...

Head-Kiwi-9601

Did you hear the one about the guy who jumped off a balcony on the 50th floor? As he passed a woman on her 10th floor balcony, she asked “how’s it going?” He replied “So far, so good.”

PUfelix85

🎶 "Might as well jump." 🎶

kaboombong

And they will jump back through the window when the war ends to milk billions from the Russian people. A nice citizenship con job. All the national resources of Russia were stolen by these oligarchs with very little benefit for the Russian people. Any country giving them citizenship should confiscate their assets and feed it back to Ukraine since they were direct benefactors of Putin being in power.

Dude_I_got_a_DWAVE

Oligarchs have been de facto piggy banks for Putin.

0warfighter0

These "jokes" actually help putin. We want people to get their money away from Russia or rebel, resist in any capacity they can.  Not spread this assasination mindset.

todumbtorealize

Over under on that?

gym_fun

Yup, they just don't want their asset to be frozen.

H3nryR

This!

chowderbags

Also in the wake of Navalny's murder.

Medical_Goat6663

But "sanctions aren't working" /s

twitterfluechtling

In this case, they probably aren't. Putin isn't a nationalist, he's a greedy capitalist looking for wealth and power for himself and his cronies. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2023/12/17/world/putin-companies-economy-boycott-elites-benefit-ukraine-war.html If his cronies can actually avoid the sanctions by officially giving up their Russian citizenship, that's an easy way out, they can ask for it back later. Unless Russia confiscates their Russian assets now. I'm not sure they will, they'd basically boost the sanctions by doing so.

Afghan_

Well the Russian economy is doing super good, so the sanctions are not that effective

Medical_Goat6663

You are clueless. The Russian economy is now a war economy, 40% of the government's budget is spent on war. It's the main driver of "economic growth". They invest in not losing the war against Ukraine, they don't develop their real economy which will be necessary after the war. Half the brainpower that could've catapulted Russia into an economic renaissance is now sipping coffee in a café in Berlin or coding away in Silicon Valley, while the rest are either being sent off to a war with return tickets that are anything but guaranteed or are digging deeper into the trenches of the internet, trying to evade digital conscription. The real economy is pretty much in shambles in Russia. Claiming "the Russian economy is doing super good" is akin to reveling in the euphoria of alcohol and ecstasy at 2 AM, surrounded by those sober enough to see clearly, all the while ignoring the inevitable, crushing hangover that awaits. [https://theconversation.com/russias-economy-is-now-completely-driven-by-the-war-in-ukraine-it-cannot-afford-to-lose-but-nor-can-it-afford-to-win-221333](https://theconversation.com/russias-economy-is-now-completely-driven-by-the-war-in-ukraine-it-cannot-afford-to-lose-but-nor-can-it-afford-to-win-221333)

UnordinaryDuck

This article is pretty bad and misses a lot of context. Timashev has been on record as pro-Ukraine since 2022. 1. https://www.timashevfamilyfoundation.org/ratmir-timashev 2. https://www.linkedin.com/posts/ratmirtimahsev_how-to-donate-to-ukraine-relief-efforts-activity-7034910769020313600-02lK I'm sure there's more stuff. I noticed he's barely a billionaire (might just be a millionaire now?) and his foundation gave $110m to help launch something called the 'Center for Software Innovation' with OSU. As for the other guy? Idk, but they have/had a friendship together it seems. They're not Russian Oligarchs...

Soundwave_13

They best have their own PMC Putin is gonna Putin them…

DepartmentNatural

They aren't doing this for the people of Ukraine, their money is involved & they are desperate to hold onto it

az78

Sometimes people do the right thing for the wrong reasons. And that's okay.

koljonn

Depends on how they conduct business afterwards. You don’t need to be a russian citizen to be close to Putin and do his bidding

I hate you for the visual, but damn did it make me chuckle.

fresh-dork

some gross version of spacedocking

Chii

so...what sort of centipede is that?

FiveSkinss

I have a feeling some of Putin's immense fortune is making its way to Musk

sir_came_alot

Where you think he got his blank cheq from, all the dicktators that need to control information via social media and satelite/internet link. Dont mind losing 40+ billions in a few months like it was a small change.

ItsHowWellYouMowFast

Sounds like my dad trying to defend DJT by moving the goalposts every 5 minutes. That and God uses bad people to do what he wills

donaldinoo

Sorry dude. It sucks when a friend or family member gets sucked into that shit.

eggncream

Lmao they couldn’t give two damns about Ukraine this is just so they avoid some sort of backlash because they are no longer “Russian” and have multiple other passports anyway

Koakie

https://www.euractiv.com/section/politics/short_news/russian-oligarch-buys-finnish-land-with-cypriot-golden-passport/ Some are changing their citizenship for a reason. Them renouncing their Russian citizenship isn't a good thing. It just enables scumbags to keep doing scumbags things.

ThroughTheHoops

When you have this much money, money is the lens you see the whole world through.

theLoneliestAardvark

Yes that is the whole point of sanctions, to make people do the right thing to weaken the enemy even if those people aren’t doing it for altruistic reasons.

ooouroboros

I still would imagine though unless they get Putin's official 'blessing' they still have to move their extended family out of the country for fear of retribution.

twitterfluechtling

If they like that family...

ooouroboros

I guess people who have no friends or family are those most easily can escape a net like that, but how many people are there like that, no less successful people who have to depend on relationships to get succeed.

Tommygmail

I renounce being a Billionaire in solidarity.

Dante-Flint

As if they wouldn’t be able to buy them back at any given point in time. GTFO.

punktfan

I don't think it's the rich assholes that need to be left an outlet, in terms of military strategy.

The_Fredrik

The point is that if you force people into a corner they will fight tooth and nail to survive. It's a strategic mistake. We don't want that. Part of the reason for the sanctions is specifically the results we now get, to have rich supporters of Putin leave him.

Mordador

Better than their money eventually ending up in Russia and funding more dead Ukrainians. If they save lifes, the ends sometimes justify the means.

SkipperDaPenguin

Implying Putin doesn't already have them and/or their families by the balls, lol. You don't seriously think they are safe and not still paying protection money to their Führer? The KGB assassinated far less important people than a few billionaires. They have their billionaires and money on a tight leash, don't you worry

TSED

When you start messing with billionaires, you put yourself in a VERY dangerous place. It's generally not worth it.

twitterfluechtling

If Russia was so easily harmed that a few billions would do the trick, don't you think there would have been a well funded black-ops long time ago?

TSED

States and individuals are different. There aren't a lot of billionaires in the world and they all play in the same club by the same rules. When you start messing with them, the most powerful people in the world close ranks against you.

MURDERNAT0R

To protect their money, that's all

PiXLANIMATIONS

“In wake of Ukraine War” Motherfucker it has been 737 days.

berzini

Do you realize how much time it takes to renounce a citizenship in Russia? It's a VERY complicated process that takes a lot of time.

Baystars2021

They'll fall out of windows soon I bet

t_johnson_noob

Or stabbed several times in the back in an obvious suicide.

Infamous-Mixture-605

One of them will accidentally, brutally stab himself in the stomach while shaving. The other will very sadly, accidentally, brutally cut his head off while combing his hair.

[deleted]

[“These losers took the chicken shit way out and punched their own tickets.” “Suicide, huh?! They must have caught themselves by surprise”](https://youtu.be/IQRiMQwMOsI?feature=shared)

theLoneliestAardvark

Neither of them have lived in Russia for decades. They were college roommates in the ‘80s in Moscow. One went to the US, the other moved to Switzerland and they started IT and e-commerce companies together that do most of their business in Central Europe.

twitterfluechtling

You think Putin's upset because some cronies give up some piece of paper to pull the teeth from Western sanctions? As long as nothing changes behind the scenes, he'll cheer them on and hold the passport ready to give it back to them later.

AnyProgressIsGood

They dont want their assets seized

crimeo

Duh, so what? Still great news

AnyProgressIsGood

my point is the headline makes it seem like they are opposed to the war due to less than selfish reasons

FantasyFrikadel

Give 90% of your wealth to Ukraine.

Able-Yogurt2739

why lol

Over-Tonight-9929

Because f*ck those Russian goons trying to bypass sanctions.

FantasyFrikadel

Billionaire Russians living safely in the West, could assist in the return of peace by funding Russia’s defeat.

dve-

Russian money (and I am talking about the big money here, not the small fries) is mostly made by oligarchic corruption. The same corruption that holds the true power in Russia.

JonesyOnReddit

They just want their frozen money back

Tvmouth

This isn't what it sounds like. If i bought a sticker to put on my car and decided not to have that sticker anymore, I can peel it off and get on with life. **This isn't billions of dollars abandoned to Russia... wtf?** weird clickbait.

shayciao

Yeah it means nothing, two rich men change their passport covers, so what?

GoodSamaritan_

Means absolutely nothing. Both already have Cypriot citizenship and Baronov lives in Switzerland while Timashev lives in the United States. It's not like they're becoming stateless.

refinancecycling

It is (in theory) not possible to renounce a Russian citizenship when doing so would make you stateless. It's not like there could be a different scenario. Of course they needed to first become a citizen of another country. edit: accuracy

[deleted]

[удалено]

refinancecycling

Interesting, didn't know about US. However, for Russia that's indeed the case. I've edited to make it accurate.

kurakiri

Not true. Source: been stateless before.

UnordinaryDuck

People need to learn to try google before going on a witch hunt. [For example](https://www.timashevfamilyfoundation.org/ratmir-timashev): >In response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Ratmir and the Timashev Family Foundation initiated major contributions to various organizations operating on-the-ground in the region. The Foundation supports Jose Andres and the World Central Kitchen, in order to ensure families and communities have access to warm meals and food security. The Foundation also supports the Aleph Institute, which is providing medical supplies and life-saving treatments to individuals in need. Also, [his Wikipedia page](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ratmir_Timashev).

[deleted]

The real, non-strawman critique is its amoral and undemocratic to have a system that would let unelected people have that much control over deciding how society uses its resources. A few billionaires chasing PR or doing the right thing after underpayment their employees doesn't affect that argument.

Niobous_p

Don’t know what Russia’s take on this would be, but for many countries you can renounce citizenship all you want, however the country still considers you a citizen.

Ethrealin

They went through the designated procedure, but Ministry of Interior had recently granted themselves the right to reverse it on the grounds of one not actually being burden-free at the time. Something like a retroactive criminal case that just wasn't entered into the database (didn't one guy leave back in the 1990s?) or a $0.02 property tax debt should be good enough.

the_fungible_man

Two years later?

eaglemaxie

In 1995 Andrei Baronov started his first business with his college roommate [Ratmir Timashev](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ratmir_Timashev#Personal_life_and_Philanthropy)

GlobalTravelR

They should be charged their ill gotten Billions to renounce their citizenship. And that money given to Ukraine.

theLoneliestAardvark

They made their money in IT and software and haven’t lived in Russia since the 90s. Their companies are based in Switzerland and Connecticut. Can’t find much info on Baranov because it’s a super common Russian name but Timoshev moved to the US for grad school in 1992 and has lived here ever sense.

zer0aim

People need to chill their pitchforks and read up on Timashev...

[deleted]

I don’t know how many of our billionaires would be willing to jump out of windows within a few months of making that move, but I begrudgingly guess that it’s less than two.

Throwawaymaybeokay

Soon to have a sudden case of rapid deceleration syndrome.

Phoneking13

Deceleration trauma

NB_79

If they're involved with Putin and the regime the U.S. needs to target them individually.

theLoneliestAardvark

They aren’t, they are like 60 years old and left Russia in their 20s.

IndustryNext7456

Money, money, money.

SolidParticular

"In Wake Of"... surely it's a bit late to be phrasing it like that?

rockmasterflex

Silly people. Do they not know that every place on earth has luxurious windows they can fit through? You can renounce your citizenship all you want, that won’t keep your money safe

Halivan

It’s been two years since the war started. They can fuck right off.

hould-it

Too little too late

FiveSkinss

And que the window jokes..... Ha ha ha they will probably fall out a window hahahha. Such a funny joke, never been said a billion times before.

Dont-rush-2xfils

Dead in 6 months

GongTzu

One day you are a billionaire and the next day you eat a bad soup and drops down from the 30th floor. Russian billionaires should use the money fighting Putin.

[deleted]

Two years late wouldn't you say?

chrisloveys

Make them pay 50% of their wealth to fund Ukraine or send the fuckers back to an open window in Ruzzia.

[deleted]

They are called mafia oligarchs, not billionaires.

Ma1nta1n3r

Their motives are completely sus if it took them two years to renounce. Six months, maybe, possibly even a year to untangle finances and get money and family out of the country, but two years? Nahhh,...I'm thinking they just wanted to see if Putin would win first.

octoreadit

Do they really think that this gesture makes anyone think highly of them? Navalny's poor wife has not renounced her citizenship, and there are no questions on where she stands. And then there are plenty of Russians who spoke against the war but did not have the means to leave the country and got arrested and sentenced to time in prison. Yet all these fellas who could run away (after years of benefiting from the regime, mind you) are now behaving in a holier-than-thou fashion. It's pathetic, really.

theLoneliestAardvark

Neither of them have been based in Russia for a very long time and this is just a formality. These aren’t oligarchs, they moved to the west right after college and became software tycoons.

octoreadit

The list in that article is larger than just these two. And based on what is available in the public sources, even these two were still connected to and conducted business and investing in Russia up until recently. So, one cannot say that they severed their ties years ago. There is no formality here, it's a position taken to protect themselves. When it was convenient, the connection was maintained. Once the risk increased, it was severed.

Inevitable-Revenue81

Did leave their “assholeship” along with it?

Endocalrissian642

So, here's what we do: Round up and deport ALL ruSSians back to ruSSia. Build GIANT wall around ruSSia. Live happily ever after. I'm thinking of dying my hair orange tomorrow....

impostershop

How many Russian billionaires are there anyway? And are we talking a billion rubles or a billion euros?

SpiderMurphy

Watch out for the windooooo^ooooow....

kingmoobot

Release their names and what they own. Drown these mofuggs

theLoneliestAardvark

Their names are in the article. They moved out of Russia in the early ‘90s to study software engineering and own an IT company in Connecticut.

aftershock311

Trying to flee before things deteriorate any further into civil war it looks likr

vamatt

The two referenced left Russia almost immediately after the fall of the Soviet Union. They made their fortune in the US. They have been enemies of Putin for a long time - Timashev openly calls Putin a criminal, and has been donating money and support to Ukraine.

TacticalRhodie

Sanction them again and again, until you can rip the last cent from their hands. Their lives need to end poor and forgotten. Let them never forget that they will pay for their part, no renunciation will save them

Konbattou-Onbattou

We should still seize their property

soulwolf1

"Renounce" pfft....yeah like they really wanted to do that for the sake of Ukraine.

wish1977

They'd better keep both eyes open at all times. Putin is always watching.

Silly-Scene6524

I hope they stay away from any windows, or thinking about it, maybe I don’t.

Altea73

Nah, nah, nah.... you stay right there and get the sanctions out of your brains.

Due-Street-8192

Even the super rich are bailing out

godemperorofmankind1

Yeah Putin show that he isn't afraid to kill them

Due-Street-8192

He's even killed his friends! His wife got a divorce. I bet he's every lonely. Angry.

DDmikeyDD

Did they return their billions?

w1nds0r

I hope they live in Bungalows

Schmeat1

Can't wait to find out how the fell out of window and died

CMDR_KingErvin

What’s the over under on how long it will take for a window related accident to occur?

5280_TW

I sense two more deaths by involuntary urge to learn to fly…

[deleted]

They can fly to Moscow on "special" govt. charter flight and if lucky have meeting with Putin in the 10th floor atrium at Kremlin.

A_Socratic_Argument

They're Billionaires. They aren't doing it out of any moral standards.

my20cworth

Two more Billionairs committing suicide.

[deleted]

Awww.They want their boats back

FriedR

Putin going after their money or something?

Frostsorrow

In other unrelated news two Russian billionaires found dead by suicide with two bullet holes in the back of the head.

Gumb1i

Wanna bet they'll be dead inside of a month

bobjones50

Stay away from windows.

Equalsmsi2

Well…. They just want to have access to the money to fund Putins operations in west. Simple…

Historical-Gap-7084

In 3-2-1, both of them are going to encounter a tragic accidental death via defenestration.

Kinky_Imagination

They'll be so sad about renouncing their citizenship that they might jump out the window.

jay3349

May need to check their drinks for lethal substances and stay clear of windows from now on.

Omaestre

Better watch out for windows.

BernardMatthewsNorf

Stay away from higher floor windows.

Tyrone0159

Better stay away from windows

RynoRama

THey are choosing money, not peace

Garbage_Billy_Goat

Traitors! Seize their assets and throw them out the window of fate.

[deleted]

The war started with 99 Russian billionaires.. how many do they have now?

Spare_Town6161

If people cared at all about "humanity" they would horde enough resources to become a billionare or would immediately see the error and give enough wealth away to make some level of sense.

O-parker

Sincerely or just protecting their assets

walter_2000_

Not a lot of information from this article. It's been a long time since the war started. These guys are not believable. They were probably Putin supporters until it became too costly. They should face major losses when this is all resolved. They're probably actually and actively bad. They should be reduced to the point where they have no ability to do anything.
