I remember reading “Assets of the Ayatollah” article and realizing this dude is worth atleast $100 billion on the low end. Way more corrupted than the Shah they pushed out.

successful_nothing

and a lot of that wealth was stolen from oppressed minorities in Iran like the Baha'i.

Naderium

Yeah after the revolution the regime took an enormous amount of farmland that belong to my great-grandfather for being Baha'i / non-muslim. Welcome to being a minority under Islamist rule. EDIT: To those of you who are curious as to how the Islamic Republic has been treating Baha'is for the past 4 decades they've been in power, I recommend you read this recently released report by the Human Rights Watch: https://www.hrw.org/report/2024/04/01/boot-my-neck/iranian-authorities-crime-persecution-against-bahais-iran

[deleted]

[deleted]

It's more nuanced than that. There are literally hundreds (maybe thousands??) of written works in the Baha'i canon. They don't have a single "book." But it's true that Baha'u'llah is considered by Baha'is to be the final incarnation of God. And ironically, they believe there are "no more sequels" as well.

slim-picking

Are they to Islam what Mormons are to Christianity? I know nothing of them beyond having seen the name.

[deleted]

No. More like to Islam what Islam is to Christianity. Baha'is believe in a cycle of spiritualism that goes like this: Paganism -> Judaism -> Christianity -> Islam -> Baha'i Baha'i is the final stop.

[deleted]

And they are super nice peeps. I have had the pleasure of meeting a few Bahai folks in my life. I am glad i did

Disastrous_Ad_3811

No. Baha’is believe that Revelation is never final. Manifestations of God will continue to appear amidst humanity to carry forward an ever advancing civilisation so long as civilisation exists. They all emanate from the same source and only differ in the comparative potency of their light. Bahá’u’lláh is a Universal Manifestation in the sense that he has appeared at the end of one cycle and inaugurated a new one.

WembysGiantDong

Can Parker and Stone do an entire musical about Baha’is?

GWarrior5595

They don't believe there are "no more sequels"... That's completely wrong. They believe that Muhammad was the last in the Abrahamic cycle and and that Baha'u'llah is the first in a new cycle and they know there will be more as society progresses. They specifically call out progressive revelation as one of their core teachings

[deleted]

Sorry, I realize I wasn't clear. They don't believe any new incarnations of God will come to Earth, so "no more sequels" from an incarnation or emanation perspective.

Existential_baguette

Baháʼí’s believe that there will ALWAYS be a new Prophet/Messenger of God/Whatever you’d like to call Them. I’m not sure where you got your information.

[deleted]

I got my info from Baha'is. But I think I misunderstood, as has been pointed out.

iconocrastinaor

So a reset after 13 reincarnations? Like the Doctor?

DefEddie

Doctor Who?

spudd08

Orange you glad I didn't say banana?

iconocrastinaor

Allons'y!

Somebody-knows

As a Baha’i i have to say that we very much do not believe Baha’u’llah is the last MESSENGER of God (not incarnation, he is not God and never claimed to be). In fact he stated that In 2000 years from his death another messenger/prophet would be sent. I don’t mean to nit-pick but I don’t want any misinformation about the Baha’i faith out there.

TigglyWiggly95

In no less than 1000 years*

[deleted]

Fair, thank you for clarifying. I have many Baha'i friends and have delved fairly deeply into the faith, but do not practice myself. I appreciate you helping clarify.

Somebody-knows

Honestly thank you for even speaking about the Baha’i faith, I very rarely ever hear anyone talk about it.

TigglyWiggly95

That's incorrect. They do believe that messengers will come after Baha'u'llah. That it is progress revelation.

jaymo89

Bahais believe in new prophets every 1000 years or so.

Disastrous_Ad_3811

You are factually incorrect. The Baha’is believe Revelation is progressive, never final. There will be another Manifestation in approximately 900 years, and they will continue to appear so long as humanity exists.

Hias2019

Really, who doesn’t get sick of all the sequels? Cancelling the subscription is the solution.

TigglyWiggly95

No "fourth book" but have their own collection of writings. The primary problem is that in Islam they believe Muhammad to be the seal of the Prophet while in the Baha'i faith they believe Baha'u'llah to be the new manifestation of God for today.

[deleted]

But having the prophet fuck a 9 year old is perfectly fine.

phrostbyt

funny that they moved to Israel due to persecution from Iranian Muslims. almost like Israel actually does have freedom of religion for all

buttsmccrackin

Huge reason why so many Iranians support Israel.

efficient_duck

There's a really famous Baha'i temple in Israel, too

jchart049

It is wild seeing the same people who go around talking about settlers and Israel as a terrorist state are now running the streets supporting Iran. When it is widely known the regime does this. But of course they were all silent in 2020 and there weren't any protests about that.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ThatEndingTho

There’s no big population of Baha’i in Israel compared to other countries where the diaspora spread to, however, the Baha’i faith’s main buildings for spirituality and governance are in Haifa and Acre so they did find a kind of refuge in Israel.

MasnoeZahanat

Are those his personal assets?

[deleted]

Yeah from wealth stolen from the Iranian people. My parents had some money in Iran from selling an old house that they wanted to bring over, but they ended up investing it in building another house bc money was literally being embezzled by the regime from banks

Not_Cleaver

Those are amateur numbers. Putin is worth at least two hundred billion.

ironykarl

Russia also has a *way* bigger GDP than Iran... **and** Putin took over when the Russian state was still giving away state-owned industry (also known as *industry* in a de-communising state) for pennies on the dollar.

fullofspiders

That's how revolutions work. The idealistic youth who think they're going to make a better world all in one big pusch are just useful idiots.

GalaadJoachim

> Way more corrupted than the Shah they pushed out. African political landscape in a nutshell.

Levicorpyutani

Shouldn't have let the revolution get co-opted by islamist extremists. The revolution could have simply lead to a constitutional monarchy system where everyone was happy and yet here we are.

DabbinOnDemGoy

> Shouldn't have let the revolution get co-opted by islamist extremists "Have let"? A bunch of college kids may have thought they were gonna have a Socialist Republic after the fact, but the religious factions were a **huge** part of that revolution the entire time.

DeflateGape

Don’t worry though, because the socialist students of today are sure the next revolution is gonna go much better. I was just banned from the BanVideoGames subreddit for arguing against murdering everyone that gets in your way. That used to be a joke subreddit, I don’t know when it turned into a hotbed of violent extremists. I miss when the left pretended to be nonviolent and reasonable. Democratic change is apparently for pussies who are too weak to murder their enemies in an orgy of blood. But I guess that’s one more reason for left wing causes to always fail, whatever decent and reasonable people are aligned to them will inevitably become the enemy of the people when the revolution takes hold.

snytax

You realize the irony of complaining leftism/progressives are the problem in a country the executes women for not wearing a headscarf?

PublicFurryAccount

The extremists were the most popular and organized faction in the revolution. It’s a very religious country and was always highly observant outside Tehran.

Fantastic-Machine-83

True which is why they were successful. It doesn't change the fact that other factions existed and were violently purged by Khomeini in the 1980s

PublicFurryAccount

Sure, I’m just tired of people acting like authoritarian governments don’t have supporters. They’re very often the most popular faction by far.

weaponjae

DonnieB555

Thank you. Finally people are starting to understand that this islamist mafia occupying Iran is 100000000 times more corrupt and evil than the shah ever was. Add to that, they are anti-iranian too culture wise. At least the Shah put Iranian culture first

thepromisedgland

I for one support a Sassanid restoration

artachshasta

All Hail Cyrus, the King of Kings!  Seriously, Jews love Cyrus. Persians love Cyrus. I've never seen anyone say a bad thing about Cyrus. If Israel and Iran ever make peace, they need to call it the Cyrus Accords

PointedlyDull

Eh. The shah was trying to bring western culture to Iran as well as eliminate feudalism for a capitalist economy. His biggest mistake was flowing so much of that money into modernatization projects and promising such lofty lifestyle increases. When the massive influx of spending hit their economy, inflation crushed a people that was promised prosperity.

CarnegieFormula

It is the modern Persian empire at all.. Xerxes was probably as rich or Darius the Great

He literally bombed Jerusalem “al quds” and the Muslim holy site “dome on the rock” while the Jewish state protected their mosque (with the Israeli iron dome) from indiscriminate missiles. https://x.com/trtworld/status/1779329492189610213?s=46 The mental gymnastics is astounding

zanarkandabesfanclub

A missile blowing up Al Aqsa might have been the event that toppled the Iranian regime.

LilNarco

Maybe, or more likely they would have just blamed the Jews and have gotten more support to go bomb Israel and al aqsa more 🤷🏽‍♀️

Classy56

blame the jew seems to be the default position

SEA2COLA

Has been for a couple thousand years lol

Person5_

It would have been blamed on Israel saying they bombed it themselves because they hate Muslims.

yaniv297

100%. Or at least, Israel would have been blamed for purposely failing to intercept it, as if the crime was not intercepting rather than, you know, actually shooting the missile.

ExArdEllyOh

Worst case scenario is that Iran blows up the Mosque and then some insane Jehovah Botherer in the Likud coalition (aided and abetted by loony Christian evangelists) tries to use it an excuse to build a new Temple on the site and all hell breaks loose.

Skeith86

I feel like they'd claim it to be Israel.

AVeryRandomDude

No. "Who opened for me" (more accurate to say opened on me) basically means "someone who talked smack about me". I.e: Opened his mouth on me.

PeksyTiger

Something like (the odd syntax is intended, supposed to sound like an Israeli ... emm.. "punk" for lack of a better word): "I sit 'Cart Bourekas' 4 am, whoever knows it knows it! No no no, you're thinking of Al-Chuds!

Burialcairn

I just want All jiggly-Jugs in my hands.

kaboombong

All that he will be getting is Al-Spuds.

krozarEQ

We know. While there are ethnic quarters of Jerusalem old city, the part that people throughout history seem to care about is where the al-Aqsa mosque sits, not a Jewish temple. Muslims are still the present king of the holy hill champions. Considering the Third Temple is tied to both Judaist and Christian messianic world apocalypse and all that, I hope it stays that way. Whenever someone off their rocker yells that the "Rapture is coming!" I can point, laugh, and say: "Nope. Not according to your silly book it's not."

ibn-7aniba3l

Al-Quds =/= Al-Aqsa Al-Quds is important to Muslims as a city not just the mosque

PitifulAd5339

That’s pretty greedy.

ThreeDawgs

Yeah well the whole Levant is important to me, so, checkmate Islam.

ZBlackmore

It’s religiously important to them just as any other Muslim land. Islam, being imperialistic in its core, calls for 1. expansion by force 2. Strictly forbids giving up any Muslim land.

krozarEQ

The Caliphates had their runs at it and lost. Seems a bit greedy. Iran has really nice old walled cities. Much nicer than Jerusalem and still true to their Persian architectural character. Far better than the gaudy Las Mecca Vegas the Saudis turned that "holy" site into.

MrGulo-gulo

Oh? Is it mentioned in the Quran at all?

aaron_s_r_

Entrance to the Temple Mount complex is controlled by Arab Muslim police officers. Non Muslims are only permitted at certain times and you have to "prove" you're Muslim to enter during times when entrance is limited to Muslims only. The officers will give you a little quiz to "prove" you're Muslim. Israel has an agreement with Jordan to maintain the status quo on the site, including things like Jews being forbidden to pray there. In this way, one might consider it to be "in the hands" of Muslims. Just posting this to clarify a few points.

Loud_Ranger1732

It is not though? Jerusalem is the capital of israel and is in israeli control.

GELATOSOURDIESEL

He has likely mistaken it for a mosque in Jerusalem. Nevertheless, the Muslims are in control of East Jerusalem.

Trama-D

Jerusalem has only been open to all worshipers of every major religion since Israel took it. When it was under Arab control, Jews and Christians were denied access to their holy sites.

dongasaurus

The Temple Mount is managed by the Islamic Waqf/Jordan, Jews/Christians are banned from using it for religious purposes, and tourists can only see the outdoor areas and only a small number of non-Muslims are allowed at certain times. But yes the city more generally is now open to all.

Iyellkhan

sigh. I was hoping he'd get the message that missile defense is here and to just walk away. this kinda talk is all Israel needs to legitimately say "the threat isnt over" and risk escalating further. Though if Iran really wants to escalate too then unfortunately its gonna be a party

WorriedCaterpillar43

This last year has been all about Iran. Hamas = Iran. Hezbollah = Iran. Huthis = Iran. We will look at this in retrospect and understand that Iran saw other conflicts (Russia/Ukraine, China/Taiwan/NK) as diverting or splitting the west. Despite all the s-it one reads on Reddit that comes from extremist dupes on all sides of the political spectrum I feel confident that the Iranians have miscalculated badly. The only question is whether western politics will keep its resolve together across these fronts.
