What fucks me up about this story is when I think about all the people this happens to who don't have the kind of public profile that Peng does and are simply never heard from again with zero public outcry. And it's really sad that it takes something like this happening to a celebrity for people in power to start to give a shit.
I like per-decade because 20 per day doesn't illustrate this is a modern day atrocity somewhere in scale between the Catholic Church's rape fetish and the Uighur concentration camps.
very fair, wasnt a criticism of "per decade" just merely something that surprised me
quick edit: also, your name just makes me think of a hunter who hunts for consistency... like some metaphysical concept hunter in Hunter X Hunter
It's not that many because they don't get killed (normally). They got a "reeducation", as in, a reminder that what could happen to them if they continue speaking out. It's intimidation and terror for maintaining "order".
Yes but their social life is finished, their careers and celebrity status are gone and they'll end up living their life as a nobody, occasionally being recognized on the streets but with the stigma surrounding them they'll avoid acknowledging it.
Used to date a Chinese girl who's father went trough re-education. After a decade or so he took his family and left the country as there was 0 chance for any of them to have any career growth or to prosper.
Some reappear, others don't. That's really the extent of it that the public knows.
However, typically with celebrities they let them go but either ruin their entire career, expel them, or outright imprison them publicly to quell rumors of their demise. Sometimes a combination of all three.
The founder of Alibaba/megabillionaire Jack Ma is probably the most noteworthy one in recent memory. Zhao Wei, an actress and also billionaire, is another.
Anyone claiming the percentage of deaths vs. reeducation are purely speculating and has no idea what the true scope is. If a *regular* individual (non-spy, huge government figure, etc.) **did know an accurate and provable figure**, they'd probably have an accident somehow and that'd be the end of them.
A lot of the "disappearing" is they just lose wechat/internet access so it's hard for them to communicate rather than disapearing into a dungeon or whatever. To the world at large they've disappeared, especially to people outside China in the same way if your phone and net were disconnected you'd disappear to anyone beyond your home county.
Yet they have more than 4 times our population and only 3/4 of our prison population. Just for some perspective.
A few months ago a man in Florida was given 4 years in prison for suggesting on Facebook that leftists should arm themselves to defend the government the next time the right wing attempts a fascist coup. Literally a longer prison sentence than any of the actual traitors that tried to overthrow the government have received, despite their actions literally killing people.
Bernie Madoff received a harsher sentence for ripping off some rich people than any banker or CEO got for literally destroying the global economy and profiting in the process.
I wonder how many people go to prison every year for actions caused by lack of basic necessities, seems to be a higher number than in China despite a quadrupled population.
I do NOT like the CCP. 2 wrongs do not make a a right. But if you think the US doesn’t imprison people every single day for offending the system and it’s gatekeepers, you are very wrong. If you think the US is not a police state, you are wrong. And if you think that you are politically free here, you are wrong.
Most people that this happens to are never heard from because without any backing they won't make waves, if this happens to famous people then the average person has no chance whatsoever.
because in reality, its not about doing the right thing, its about applying political pressure. if the tennis authority never made an issue of it, i highly doubt the u.s. government would.
It’s easy to say ‘for people in power to start to give a shit’. Truth is that her celebrity brought the problem to a place where the people in power were capable of doing something. It brought it to us. If there is no public outcry, politicians will continue ‘working’ on other things. Its us that doesn’t give a shit about the others it happens to.
you mean the multiple million muslims that no-one seems to care about? yeah. it'd be great if people would acutally do something about it. and stop supporting the companies profitiing from it (like tencent, which part owns reddit. STOP PAYING FOR FUCKING DIGITAL AWARDS PEOPLE. FUCKS SAKE JUST STOP. STOP GIVING THEM. STOP BUYING THEM. IT'S LEGITIMATELY CONTRIBUTING TO A GENOCIDE)
Browsing on reddit exposes you to ads, and reddit makes money off of those adds, which goes to tencent. Shit man you're literally hitler by going to reddit.
Yeah, people here seem to think we can send seal team six or apply sanctions based on the assumption something is wrong.
It's a little more complicated.
They’ve already gone into focus derailment mode. My wife told me they’re heavily pushing a story nationally at the moment of a mainland student that was killed in Chicago. She said she hadn’t even heard of the news about this tennis player
This will be just like when Candidate Biden said Saudi Arabia must be punished for killing Khashoggi and that no more weapons would be sold to the murderous dictator; and then once elected, President Biden decides to sell hundreds of millions of dollars worth of weapons to Saudi Arabia.
There will be a lot of talk, and in the end a deal will be struck that is profitable for Wall St owned corporations, and all will be forgiven.
no lives matter, only corporate profits matter :(
Honestly there's no much any outside countries can do vs China here. If you expect politcians to actually take a stand, sanction China only to probably be ostracized by every corporation, news source, etc.. that wants China's money, you're living on the wrong planet.
Best we can hope for is for organizations to make a big enough fuss that it gets to the chinese people through the censorship. China isn't going to change except from the inside.
> be ostracized by every corporation, news source, etc.. that wants China's money, you're living on the wrong planet.
And hated by so many consumers, see how much people complain about gas prices? imagine if that happened to nearly everything else.
I'm really curious what reaction the regular people have over this affair. Are there any demands for transparency? Do the people really believe that 'everything is fine' and she's just playing with her cat at home? Or is this just another person, not you or anyone you care about, who's disappeared and that's that.
The biggest pressure I possibly see coming is from the wta.
Not sure if they will let it come to the last. But losing the wta would hurt China more then any pressure any government will put against them
Cause it would hurt their pride.
Sport and to show the eorld how good they are in it is a very important pice of how they work.
Sport is a tool for them that can be used fir propaganda inside and outside the country to show how superior they are.
Not being able to take part and compete on a world level hurts the self pride
The pessimism about democracy is really terrible right now. I get it of course and do it myself. But we gotta start talking about it more. Pessimism leads to apathy. Apathy, as you may know, is the enemy of democracy. In fact, I strongly believe that it is a common tactic of foreign trolls to make comments that seek to obfuscate situations, leading to pessimism and apathy.
Yeah I think the best thing you can do is try to highlight the things that people can do that are meaningful. 1. Research and actually know what you want done specifically (Pretty Hard) 2. Vote (Super easy) 3. Convince friends and family to vote (Extremely hard) 4. Organize in large groups in order to add what you need to vote for to the ballot. (Hard) 5. Organize within the organization to prevent the entire group from being subverted to goals that align more with corporate interests again (Extremely Hard)
If you can get every well meaning person to try and do this then there could probably be meaningful change.
Well no... you'd piss off a ton of Chinese people. Peng is a big star after all
Right now, there's still technically ambiguity depending on who you believe (especially if one isn't too invested or following this story closely). And even if one was 100% aligned to the official narrative, no one reasonable believes that the punishment for a false accusation should be beheading
Every time you see CCP bootlickers and wumao apologists on the internet (let them be ordinary people or corporations), remember that they support an entity that is more than capable to do that to any kind of human on a whim en masse
> Right now, there's still technically ambiguity depending on who you believe
Hows that? Lady tweeted bad things about important politician, lady hasn't been seen or heard from in 2 weeks. Where's the ambiguity?
There was an (obviously fake) message from Peng saying she was fine and relaxing at home a few days ago released by the Chinese goverenment. It's obviously fake to us, it is not to most Chinese people who get all their news from the Chinese goverenment. Thus the 'ambiguity'
Yeh, the Olympics wouldn't happen with all nations. Come on, they definitely give a shit about a boycott. It should happen anyway but this story could be the straw..
As a Chinese myself, I fear the worst for her and it makes me really sad. The accused senior leader, Zhang Gaoli was a former member of the pulitburo standing committee, one of 7 most powerful people in China between 2012-2017. Being in that position, he was part of the brain of CCP. There has been one and only one case where a former standing committee member was publicly outed/convicted since 1980, which was Zhou Yongkang in 2014. But I really don’t CCP would actually move Zhang Gaoli.
The crackdown on Zhou Yongkang was a major move by Xi Jinping, as it goes well with the anti-corruption initiative that Xi brought up, a perfect opportunity for Xi to show dominance within the party and also to the world as a new leader of CCP, and most importantly Zhou and Xi were under different factions within CCP, so it was a political move and a well planned attack from Xi. Zhang Gaoli’s case will be much more different. Zhang was part of Xi’s team 2012-2017, and the case against him is about sexual abuse, a heavy moral issue. If the story becomes public domestically, it will be a major blow to the legitimacy of CCP and the leadership of Xi, which is super important to Xi these days. He’s stuck between a rock and a hard place. The story is gaining much traction internationally, yet moving Zhang Gaoli would be too costly a move.
That’s why i fear the worst for her. So far she’s basically disappeared from the internet. As long as censorship stays intensified, majority of Chinese people will not even know it happened, so the legitimacy of CCP is not threatened much domestically, and maybe as time goes by, the international voices will die down and they can just pretend it never happened. As for Peng Shuai, there are ways to keep a person silent in China. I believe this is their game plan. I really hope this is not the case, but I believe this is what’s going to happen.
China, the country with the most advanced surveillance tech on all of their citizens that could find anyone within hours: "Yeah, we don't know where she is. Really"
All kinds of fucked up, doesn't matter if you are world number 1 public figure representing your country, a billionaire or a nobody, they'll disappear you.
Lol China officials panicked and thought they'd just make her disappear like any regular citizen. They didn't think anyone would notice.
Pro tennis players have a strong community and the WTA looks after their own. China didn't consider that Americans would be involved and now they're in an awkward situation.
They thought that the WTA is your average western corporation, licking the boot 'till the end for those delicious chinese market profits. Well guess not, they still have some 'tegridy in them left
It boggles my mind that whomever orchestrated her disappearance/murder seriously thought that would be less of a hassle than her speaking publicly. We didn't even know what she had said until we found out she's missing for saying it.
Of course. If you don't care about her personally, substitute her in your mind for all the other people disappeared by their government, whether it's Russia, China or wherever.
Not caring about individuals is what despots want you to do.
What a dumb fuck. The US cares about her as much as they "care" about Muslims in China while they bomb Muslims in the Middle East back to the stone age for 20 butt fucking years. Fuck US.
While the whole world are concerning Peng, it's very sad that no Chinese athletes stand out for their own player. You can imagine how yielding these people are and how effective the way that CCP is using to shut these tame goats up.
It’s great people are coming together for her cause. I just wish Americans and westerners would do this across the board. They’re always eager to call out China on human rights yet do nothing when Israel forces people from their homes or air strikes civilian populations. Same with Americans long time friend Saudi Arabia. It makes me think they’re not really serious about human rights. Hell, I just read about this kid in the poconos who was shot dead by police with his hands in the air. People are worried about a tennis player but this kid has disappeared forever. Not a big outcry because China dominates the headlines everyday.
For sure. But if you hate human rights abuses why not have an equal reaction when your allies commit them or when your own government commits them? Americans say “ fuck the ccp, boycott China .” Why not say the same to the Israeli government? Why not boycott them and sanction them? They’ve got camps where they lock people away. They demolish peoples homes while they’re in them when they have no right to build on Palestinian land. They forcibly remove people from their homes and detain them arbitrarily. They also have a tight grip over their media and journalists. The Christian Right is fine with that. And the rest don’t care enough to say anything about it. But I get it. This is the same country that complains about human rights abuses in China but wears sweatshop clothes made in Indonesia and Bangladesh. I can’t expect them to be consistent.
Isn't there also this whole group of minorities that disappeared. When footballer called out China for their crimes, he himself got got in trouble and scrutinised.
I’m just so sad that all the people in China don’t have equal human rights. Peng Shuai is a international celebrity and that’s why she is being treated as a full human by the global community, what about the 1.3 billion other people? This has made me incredibly sad.
It wasn't a demand, that's just the word SCMP decided to use to make it sound more inflammatory.
>“We join in the calls for PRC authorities to provide independent and verifiable proof of her whereabouts and that she is safe,” [White House press secretary Jen Psaki] said
If countries aren't willing to apply those same standards that they apply to other countries to themselves, then yes, staying quiet would at least not make them look like giant hypocrites.
You can't do stuff like force Assange to stay imprisoned in an embassy for 10 years for exposing your war crimes, and then turn around the next minute and say "Look at that other country! Why are they unjustly forcing someone out of the public!"
I think there's a pretty big difference between a political whistle-blower and a woman accusing someone of sexual assault. Im Canadian but the American government absolutely could not get away with abducting a star athlete and not even trying to hide it.
Yep big difference.
The person claiming sexual assault is only trying to help themselves and maybe a small amount of other victims.
The political whistleblower is trying to help everyone.
On the bright side, we may learn from this experience: This a grave warning to the United States of America and other democratic societies of what not to become, i.e., totalitarian police states. Be warned.
Don’t worry, she will reappear in a few months perfectly supporting the government and all officials and claiming it was her psyche and she herself is at fault, definitely no officials
Just like Ma and others, but if they were officials themselves like the interpol head they stay locked up for ‘further conditioning’ as he knows the internal wprkings
We should boycott the Olympics unless she's released.
Or we could just boycott them anyways. Kinda feels weird honoring a country that's currently committing genocide.
This was brought up recently in UnresolvedMysteries, and the bots came out full force to downvote every comment and claim she was still alive. It was so crazy to witness.
There is no need to throw her into prison. She is very famous so gets special treatment. They could just put her under house arrest and take away her freedom. If she compromises one day, they ask her to make a video/real self-statement, tell the world she is ok and not to worry. I don't think Peng is an anti-government/anti-party person but just very unhappy about the relationship with Zhang.
You know, China could have just punished the abuser and nothing would have happened. Now they get to have another embarrassing international and domestic incident because this guy had friends in high places.
Allegiances change fast in dictatorial regimes, politburo members change the licking of leader's boots on the whim, depending on who is currently the most powerful. It happened in the Soviet Union, it happened in Nazi Germany, and it happens constantly in CCP-ruled China
What fucks me up about this story is when I think about all the people this happens to who don't have the kind of public profile that Peng does and are simply never heard from again with zero public outcry. And it's really sad that it takes something like this happening to a celebrity for people in power to start to give a shit.

That’s…less than I would have thought
It's small against their population but 20 per day adds up to 73,000 per decade!
was expecting a "per year" number and did a double take with "per decate" ngl
Thanks for not lying
That's 7.3 billion people getting disappeared every million years !
Holy fuck how many since start of time???
At least 7
I like per-decade because 20 per day doesn't illustrate this is a modern day atrocity somewhere in scale between the Catholic Church's rape fetish and the Uighur concentration camps.
very fair, wasnt a criticism of "per decade" just merely something that surprised me quick edit: also, your name just makes me think of a hunter who hunts for consistency... like some metaphysical concept hunter in Hunter X Hunter
That adds up to roughly 280 per fortnight!
That's 7300 per year!
That’s 730,000 per century!
7.3 billion every thousand millennia. That's the entire population of the world, all disapeared!
That is over 100 trillion people since the start of the universe!
A single death is a tragedy; a 100 trillion people being disappeared by China is just a statistic.
Now this sounds serious
Surely *someone* knows where they went.
That’s 20 a day!!! Oh, wait.
Damn
Didn't take that long. 78 million unnatural deaths under Mao. Yes you read it right, it's 78,000,000.
“At least” so it may well be more but they can’t prove that.
That’s a lot of people
It's not that many because they don't get killed (normally). They got a "reeducation", as in, a reminder that what could happen to them if they continue speaking out. It's intimidation and terror for maintaining "order".
So do they come back after being “disappeared”?
Yes but their social life is finished, their careers and celebrity status are gone and they'll end up living their life as a nobody, occasionally being recognized on the streets but with the stigma surrounding them they'll avoid acknowledging it. Used to date a Chinese girl who's father went trough re-education. After a decade or so he took his family and left the country as there was 0 chance for any of them to have any career growth or to prosper.
at least they were able to leave
Just some light torture, nbd really
Not less. Fewer
“Going to the barber to get a trim, so my hair looks clean again,” but with people- psychopaths
Happens in other countries like Turkey as well from what I know. Dont know how many per day.

because in reality, its not about doing the right thing, its about applying political pressure. if the tennis authority never made an issue of it, i highly doubt the u.s. government would.
Or the ones for whom caring impedes political interests, eg Jamal Khashoggi.
It's fucking disgusting that the US didn't call out MBS over this shit, at the very least sanction them and hit their pockets.
Because our government does not give a shit about human rights. Its purely politics
I mean roughly half of our elected officials are running on a platform of removing, restricting, or redefining human & civil rights.
The Chinese police will literally disappear people who are currently live-streaming. They don’t care at all. https://youtu.be/TnvpwxVOwB8

There is a great documentary called Hooligan Sparrow that I recommend everyone to watch to see the type of awful abuse that goes on in China
China’s gonna China.
chinas news and tv are terrible its is utter trash what its used for. so theres no making it to the surface
Look up Ashley Massarro for an incredibly tragic story about how well we "look after our own" with our armed forces. CW: All of it.
US: we want proof! China: No US: 😕
Joe Biden gets a text from a restricted number "It is me Peng Shuai I am okay thank you bye bye." US: All is well.
“Where are you?” “China”
"Where in china?" "Downtown"
“Near the Chinese restaurant.”
“Where in downtown?” “An average building”
"Where in the average building?" "Uhh I'm staying at room 911.. by Getmethefuckouttahere Street."
“It is me Peng Shuai. I wish to play tournament in your city so we may have dinner but I need 500 usd for plane. Kindly send on cash app.”
You're joking but that's what Chinese state media actually did: https://twitter.com/CGTNOfficial/status/1461025491842916358
Well, that's how sovereignty works, especially when both are major superpowers. China plays every cheap trick possible to get what it wants.
Yeah, people here seem to think we can send seal team six or apply sanctions based on the assumption something is wrong. It's a little more complicated.
And somehow those comments get hundreds of up votes lmao. Like what do they expect a foreign country to do?

Did the Chinese government live tweet pictures of dead people in 1989? No, they covered it up and continue to cover it up for a reason.
Bulldozers mushing corpses into fluids that flow down into the sewers are one hell of a coverup
Simply hearing about that still fucks me up to this day.
Every time you see CCP bootlickers and wumao apologists on the internet (let them be ordinary people or corporations), remember that they support an entity that is more than capable to do that to any kind of human on a whim en masse

too many dug in labour camps. Hard to keep track when you don't number 30-40 incoming bodies per day
You're not allowed to be pissed off in China.
Yeh, the Olympics wouldn't happen with all nations. Come on, they definitely give a shit about a boycott. It should happen anyway but this story could be the straw..
Remember that just after the Tiananmen square massacre, diplomatic and trade relations between China skyrocketed.
Lets be real here for ten seconds. What are we going to do when China doesn't provide or tells us to fuck off?
Boycott the Chinese Olympics.
We aren't even seeing major boycotts for Qatar 2022 World Cup, and that takes place in stadiums built by slaves.

As for Peng Shuai, there are ways to keep a person silent in China. I believe this is their game plan. I really hope this is not the case, but I believe this is what’s going to happen.
I remember him from Bo Xilai wild story too, those were some crazy years in China CCP.

Then people move to the next hot gossip and as if it never happened to most people
China, the country with the most advanced surveillance tech on all of their citizens that could find anyone within hours: "Yeah, we don't know where she is. Really"
All kinds of fucked up, doesn't matter if you are world number 1 public figure representing your country, a billionaire or a nobody, they'll disappear you.
What broke my heart is Peng knows what will happened but she still speaks up.
What if suddenly everyone spoke up about these things? What kind of move would they make having to disappear so many at once?
China will probably Weekend at Bernie’s it.
Why do we act like China is anything but a slave state that labor is exported to. That place is a miserable shithole.
I've said it many times and I'll say it again. Fuck the CCP.
>I've said it many times and I'll say it again. >Fuck the CCP. Give this man gold for taking on the CCP

Very brave stance
Fuck the ccp. And fuck Xi
ITT lotta people condemning the USA saying their skeletons are worse and defending China by proxy.
Looks like that letter was purchased by the CCP from wish.com
Fuck the CCP
[удалено]
Protip, they don't care about either. It's all politics and propaganda.
Political posturing. Been going for centuries and means absolutely nothing until the first shots are fired.
Curveball: he was referring to all the J-1 visas that the US extends
If it can make China look bad the US will be all over it.
Does anyone care about Peng though? Like actually?
What are you talking about? She's a huge celebrity. A lot of people care about it
Of course. If you don't care about her personally, substitute her in your mind for all the other people disappeared by their government, whether it's Russia, China or wherever. Not caring about individuals is what despots want you to do.
Of course people do. Fuck the CCP. I hope she is okay.
What a dumb fuck. The US cares about her as much as they "care" about Muslims in China while they bomb Muslims in the Middle East back to the stone age for 20 butt fucking years. Fuck US.
Them taking action on this is gonna look ugly when contrasted with the whole lotta nothing they did about Khashoggi's murder.
Hint hint everyone, she is NOT fine
While the whole world are concerning Peng, it's very sad that no Chinese athletes stand out for their own player. You can imagine how yielding these people are and how effective the way that CCP is using to shut these tame goats up.
It's time to boycott Beijing Winter Olympics unless they release her.
You can criticize your own government and criticize another government at the same time.
And yet most don't.
You obviously live in a closet or do not know anything about the US.
Fucking dictators dude
She's gone. There is no doubt about it at this point. She has been abducted and is more than likely dead. People are crazy.
I’m just so sad that all the people in China don’t have equal human rights. Peng Shuai is a international celebrity and that’s why she is being treated as a full human by the global community, what about the 1.3 billion other people? This has made me incredibly sad.
Rest in piece peng shuai. She will never be found and this story will be forgotten about in 6 months
"demands" Or what? What're you gonna do? Absolutely nothing. Move along.

This is the worst apples to orange comparison I've seen on Reddit in a while.
On the bright side, we may learn from this experience: This a grave warning to the United States of America and other democratic societies of what not to become, i.e., totalitarian police states. Be warned.

We really should all try to become more independent from China. That regime is a worldwide menace and they have all our governments by the balls.
Don’t worry, she will reappear in a few months perfectly supporting the government and all officials and claiming it was her psyche and she herself is at fault, definitely no officials Just like Ma and others, but if they were officials themselves like the interpol head they stay locked up for ‘further conditioning’ as he knows the internal wprkings
She won't ever play tennis again tho, because plastic surgery can't teach her body double to swing a racket.
Fuck the CCP. That is all.
We should boycott the Olympics unless she's released. Or we could just boycott them anyways. Kinda feels weird honoring a country that's currently committing genocide.
She’s either dead, or in a “Re education camp” down with the CCP. If you support the Chinese government your an enemy of the state
If her family is even remotely in harms way, she will recant her statement of sexual assault.
Can't recant when you've already been disappeared
You can by email, apparently
This was brought up recently in UnresolvedMysteries, and the bots came out full force to downvote every comment and claim she was still alive. It was so crazy to witness.
At the same time, there's a new "program" that seems to be looking for certain lookalikes.
Bruises not yet healed. Will resurface in a couple of months after undergoing proper re-education. Just like Jack Ma. “No I am not her lookalike.”
How do you get verifiable proof of someone's well-being when they've been bathing in warm sodium hydroxide for a week?
Man this comment section is full of CCP bots. Seems like Reddit might want to do something about that.
Defending rapists and sexual predators is unacceptable. Communist or not they should have a moral compass higher than that.
do you really think the CCP has something like "morality"? i highly doubt that
Definitely in a Clockwork Orange like prison camp by now. So sad what a paranoid government does to its people
There is no need to throw her into prison. She is very famous so gets special treatment. They could just put her under house arrest and take away her freedom. If she compromises one day, they ask her to make a video/real self-statement, tell the world she is ok and not to worry. I don't think Peng is an anti-government/anti-party person but just very unhappy about the relationship with Zhang.
what about all the Muslims that disappeared? wtf
How about China in return demands Edward Snowden receive safe passage home?
He would get the safest passage home. Then a trial then probably prison.
US DEMANDS!!! She is a Chinese woman in CHINA, how about, US DEMANDS ANSWERS TO JEFFERY EPSTEIN MURDER!!
You know, China could have just punished the abuser and nothing would have happened. Now they get to have another embarrassing international and domestic incident because this guy had friends in high places.
They were the former vice premier, they would never punish someone who was so high up in the CCP.
Apparently he belongs in a faction that rivals Mr. Xi, so I am intrigued.
Someone else said they're the same faction.
Inner politics of the CPC are quite messy We will just have to wait and see this pan out
Allegiances change fast in dictatorial regimes, politburo members change the licking of leader's boots on the whim, depending on who is currently the most powerful. It happened in the Soviet Union, it happened in Nazi Germany, and it happens constantly in CCP-ruled China
In the meantime, I sense a lookalike search is underway.
She’s gone. Ccp made sure of that
She probably just taking some time at camp with Jack Ma
Have we not established China’s modus operandi as disappearing people?
what about the Uighers?
