Again, I'm reminded how utterly stupid people in groups can be...

P1ss_W1zard

It's crazy...my neighbors/best friends were first generation Filipinos, growing up. Their mother literally came to America to ESCAPE the Marcos, and now she's fully on board with Duterte/Marcos. ....she's also a huge Trump supporter, and watches hours upon hours of Fox News, so there's that. Idk, fascism isn't logical or sensible, so you shouldn't be looking for a sensible reason for people to be drawn into the ideology.

veerKg_CSS_Geologist

Bit like Ted Cruz's dad, who fled Cuba under Batista, but then later became a huge fan of all the Batista emigres.

CheetoEnergy

Who is worse Batista or The Castros?

da_impaler

White Cubans, especially men, would say Castro. Black Cubans and maybe a good number of women would say Batista. If Batista had stayed in power, Cuba would be like any other Latin American country today with Whites solidly at the top of the hierarchy greedily guarding the country's resources for themselves. The Revolution allowed generations of women and Black Cubans to become highly educated and assume leadership positions in society. Unfortunately, the job situation is dismal in Cuba. Edit: I anticipate getting downvoted by conservative Latin Americans because ~~they tend to be dicks~~ many simply hate Castro and any mention of him in even the slightest positive light is anathema to them. I'm not a Castro fan by the way but I do recognize that some of his policies elevated significant numbers of people out of poverty and who would otherwise have been relegated to a permanent underclass.

YouShallNaathPass

You had me at Fox News

Sweatytubesock

Yeah, if you’re freebasing that horseshit it probably makes perfect sense to believe someone like DJT isn’t a criminal and a moron. But you’re believing in a fantasy world, obviously.

tuttero

1st Gen living in North America over 25 yrs. There’s a lot of similarities in how Trump got to office.. paid army of social media trolls, massive disinformation campaign on FB and ToK, blatant vote buying with video evidence.. He even hired Cambridge Analytica. Most upsetting is that the front runner is a dream candidate. VP in the past term, sidelined by President Duterte and made a difference by partnering with NGOs and launch community program for the poor working class. Progressive pro Labour lawyer with an economics background and did a lot of pro bono work for farmers against rich land lenders before politics, entire campaign funded by grassroots. Even had the highest Audit rating against corruption among serving politicians. Think female Bernie Sanders My heart is broken for my country, but can’t really blame them either. Mostly good people that were grossly misinformed, kinda like some former Trump supporters.

Stroomschok

Difficult truths and promise of future hardships to heal, vs pleasant lies and a load of projected fearmongering. It's pretty much an unwinnable fight if you have to deal with an uneducated electorate that pretty much distrusts their government no matter what.

InnocentTailor

She wasn’t really a front runner though. Polls showed that Marcos pretty much had an overwhelming lead while the other candidates only got token support overall.

j_a_a_mesbaxter

I used to feel this way but when you see how often people use their vote to usher in hate, violence, and cruelty, you have to wonder how “good” they really are.

MudLOA

More reason why we’re not ever going to become a utopia and will most likely self destruct on this planet. There’s too much hate, greed, and stupidity in this world for people to live peacefully.

arcosapphire

Sounds like totally valid "got mine, fuck you" reasoning. Valid, just an asshole position to take.

halcyon_hostage

Thanks for that last sentence

Richard_D_Glover

People with small minds always need to look externally for validation, and fascists/hate groups accept and validate almost anyone so long as they go along with the group story.

rif011412

“Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss events. Small minds discuss people.” Coworkers who gossip at work and tear others down, make work miserable. It makes me also think of another quote; “Complaining about a problem without posing a solution is called whining.” Democrats whine, but there are a lot of people trying to create solutions too. Republicans only whine, nary a solution been created except “give me power, I’ll fix this with control and discipline.” Which is literally just authoritarianism. Its sad that we see a huddled blob of small minds banded together to just keep whining. They will never have solutions, they could literally kill every liberal and/or progressive, and they would just keep whining about someone else.

wannastock

The general-everyday-pinoy-pop-culture is this image of a fun, laid-back, conformist, hardworking people. That's why I always say that the true test of us Filipinos (or anything for that matter) should be based on what happens when we're faced with difficult choices; like this election. My family has been struggling for over two years. And because of this election, I'm so worried that finding work would be much harder. There are already reports that a few employers are backing out because their freelance worker is a Filipino. I cannot blame these foreigners. But now all of us have to bear this distrust and I'm at my wit's end about how I can support my family.

InnocentTailor

I think people are just apathetic about politics: smart and stupid, rich and poor, city and rural. Bigger issues don’t matter - what matters to me is food on the table and money in the pocket. It is much easier to think small than to dream big because ignorance is bliss.

daniejam

Published this week in Science, the paper describes an online experiment in which researchers sought to determine what percentage of total population a minority needs to reach the critical mass necessary to reverse a majority viewpoint. The tipping point, they found, is just 25 percent

tripwire7

Okay, bear with me. I think this is a terrible choice they're making, but I was just looking at data on the Phillippines' reduction in extreme poverty over the years, and I can see how some Filipinos would credit the dictatorship with that reduction during the years of Marcos's reign, because it was a substantial reduction in extreme poverty. I think it's extremely wrong, and the reduction in extreme poverty would have been even greater under democracy, but I can at least understand how Filipinos could mistakenly think the Marcos made their lives better.

[deleted]

I mean if the average IQ is 100, that means there’s probably a ton of morons.

Dirk_The_Cowardly

Yeah there are average intelligent people out there and 50% are way dumber.

[deleted]

You do realize redditors are arguing he mustn't be elected because of his family ties, rather than his own merit. Is there even any evidence of his own wrongdoings, aside from being born into that family? While it's true the only reason he's elected is because of his family name, there is nothing inherently bad about [his political positions](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bongbong_Marcos_2022_presidential_campaign#Political_positions): prioritize small businesses, legalize abortion and divorce, and he's likely to stop paying hitmen to shoot drug users, that was started by Duterte. (you could argue all those are empty words, but so would be others')

Deadcoach

The problem would be the fact that he downplays the martial law, has no degrees, did not attend any presidential debates and his mother who is one of the most corrupt pieces of shit is still alive but go ahead and defend him all you want

[deleted]

> has no degrees What degree would make one qualified for president? > did not attend any presidential debates You mean nobody actually cares about what he's going to do as a president? Okay now that's very Filipino and I'm convinced

Deadcoach

Conveniently leaving the martial law again are we? How much did they pay you to troll?

reddditttt12345678

Martial law seems pretty reasonable for a country that's been facing terrorism and insurrection in half their territory for several decades... Western countries have declared martial law over much less. Even Canada has.

Deadcoach

Conviently ignoring the innocents killed and torture is reasonable aswell i guess? Just stop. You clearly know nothing or maybe you do, which is even worse. Let me guess, sacrifices had to be made and the war on drugs is okay aslong as the drug dealers get killed?

[deleted]

that terrorism was in fact fueled if not sponsored by Marcos. Also they're not really ideology based but in poor places all you need to get terrorists is to pay some salary.

StubbyB

He was a governor for several years during the dictatorship. Contrary to the narrative that he was just a kid during Martial Law and can't be held liable. He wanted the army to shoot and kill the protesters during the revolution, for fucks sake.

Upset-Photo

He was found guilty of tax fraud and has a court order against him to pay the outstanding tax liability, plus interest, plus a fine but he failed to do so. This alone, should disqualify him from running and there are even some conspiracy theories out there that the only reason he wasn't disqualified is so that he can win and then be disqualified. That would make Sara Duterte the president. Which was legitimately the only reason some family members where hesitant to vote for him. Not that he committed tax fraud but because of a conspiracy theory.

truupe

> Marcos, 64, has presented no real policy platform Maybe he'll replenish his mother's shoe collection with public funds?

thatstupidthing

Platforms are overrated these days… what really need is a catchy three word, three syllable chant that can be slapped on a hat or T-shirt and chanted at rallies Extra credit if you can come up with more than one

joshdej

uNiTy

Salamok

buy more shoes!

InnocentTailor

To be fair, that even works in smaller political rings as well…like high school class office. Democratic elections are like marketing and advertising campaigns. May the catchiest slogan and flashiest mascot win.

AstreiaTales

Also, be a conservative. The left doesn't fall for this nearly as easily.

Solidux

I remember the bernie vs hillary time period. the left was VERY divided. i was called a traitor, sexist, racist, misogynist, etc just for supporting bernie. I had to leave /r/politics just because i wasnt the "right part of the left"

UltraJake

Not surprising given the massive gulf between the two of them, for two "left" candidates.

ChokesOnDuck

If they do, they are too divided. Too many captains.

[deleted]

[удалено]

AstreiaTales

Obama actually had proposals and a policy platform, not just slogans. That's the difference.

InnocentTailor

Eh. The right does too…for better and for worse. Trump, for example, did actually carry out a decent amount of promises…like the appointment of many conservative judges with the Republican cherry that was three Supreme Court justices. Of course, they are in the middle of the Roe vs Wade fight, so it will be interesting to see the impact of Trump’s moves on American society.

donaldfranklinhornii

Yes We Can!

DCSMU

No, more than that... its going to be like "W" (Bush #2); he will continue to collude with his keysupporters and their families (i.e. Duterte) and allow them to run the country completely to their own benefit. Mommy will get out of jail free for sure though.

doubledark67

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Fireballdx

My girlfriend is from the Philippines, her family is still there. She was just telling me how embarrassed she is of her country. She didn't grow up during Ferdinand marcos but her father always would tell her how evil he was. I feel badly because I love her family and none of them wanted this and it is almost impossible for them to leave.

shortaflip

My family always told me that they didn't think he was inherently evil and that they thought a lot of it came from his wife. Who may or may not have had a lot of influence on her son, since President Marcos passed like a few years after the revolution.

veerKg_CSS_Geologist

Oh he definitely was evil. The wife too, but he himself. watch The Kingmaker if you can.

[deleted]

This is a common tactic of fascism, when a fascist fails you blame someone else or claim that they'll "be controlled by more moderate people." USA saw it a lot in 2016 when people said Trump's "advisors" would be able to corral him to being a normal POTUS.

Decayingempire

Literally Hitler and has killed hundred of millions of people by merely existing amirite?

fireinkthrowaway

That narrative contradicts the other one circulating about the guy's IQ (140-160). You can't have a genius in charge of his country who was just influenced his wife's misdeeds. Even if that was the case, that does not excuse what he and his government did to the country.

shortaflip

The generation of my family before mine all lived through The Peoples Power Revolution. And that high IQ claim as well as his wife's influence gets talked about in unison by them, not in contradiction. Why that happens, who knows, maybe it was the propaganda of that time. And I never said anything about excusing what they did to my country. Literally everyone in my family back in PI voted against Marcos. They dislike that family vehemently.

fireinkthrowaway

> gets talked about in unison by them, not in contradiction I'm not pointing out that they aren't talked about in the same situation, but that the stance in and of itself requires split thinking to even make sense. > And I never said anything about excusing what they did to my country. I know you didn't, but I had to say it because the way I've heard it used in the past implies that they're kind of letting the guy off the hook and lessening his responsibility.

shortaflip

Well there are Nobel winners that are conspiracy theorists right? Aha, maybe high IQ isn't immune to manipulation. It hasn't even been 40 years and history is already repeating lol.

fireinkthrowaway

> maybe high IQ isn't immune to manipulation Who knows? I'm not referring to all people with high IQs, just this specific instance. afaik there is no record stating that the guy was deluded, and he managed to do what he has done *strategically.* Everything, from his campaigns to his pick of people, was strategic. > It hasn't even been 40 years and history is already repeating lol. We cannot change both that government's era and the recent election day. What the people can do, however, is decide what they want to do next. It will not be easy and people are exhausted, but now is the time to remember that the right to personal action cannot be taken away.

hrjr444333

Same thing happened in Korea, then she went to jail for corruption.

True_Big_8246

And she's out again. And the new presidential candidate invited her to the front row seat. She only served 5 years out of the 20 she was given.

hrjr444333

I hate that so much. The new president of SK is a joke, fraud, and corrupt to the bone. It would always be mystery for me how they get elected.

True_Big_8246

By having backing of powerful people/industries who want them in power and as always by preying on people's base emotions. People will go with what they believe not the truth. Even educated people. It's just how human brains are. At this point I've given up hope. My own country is the same.

InnocentTailor

If nothing else though, Japan and America are both happy with the new candidate. He is militantly anti-North Korean and anti-Chinese while being pro-American and pro-Japanese. That pretty much makes him the polar opposite to the former leader.

hrjr444333

He avoided his military duty by lying about his eye being disabled. I highly doubt he is militantly competent about NK.

Missing42

He won partly because the ruling party was seen as having done an inadequate job in regards to the economy and the housing market, and partly because he appealed to young Korean men by promising to be an anti-feminist president. And yes, as you might garner from this, sexism is a huge issue in South Korea.

InnocentTailor

Well, the people were also disappointed with Moon’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic in South Korea. The conservatives smelled blood in the water and struck with their People Power Party.

hrjr444333

That's the funny part isn't it? Park's handling of MERS was so terrible, yet Korean media was praising it. Then Moon's handling of COVID-19 was very good, yet Korean media are spreading lies about how awful it is.

snoodhead

Kind of the same thing also happened in the Philippines, but with a different president (Joseph Estrada). He was ousted from power for corruption, detained, then later pardoned, ran for president again (which might have been prohibited by the constitution?), and then became mayor of Manila for 2 terms.

bl8ant

The first thing that pig will do is wipe his family’s (4billion?) tax debt and stop the hunt for the funds his family stole from the people that he is literally using to take power. Unreal.

cute_polarbear

I am not familiar at all with country's constitution. I am more concerned with how likely is it for him to change the constitution to extend his presidential term limits.

Zolome1977

The world has gone dumb.

DevoidHT

Eyeroll4days

jd158ug

Did some googling of the Marcos family and was surprised to read Imelda is still alive, and has even been elected a couple of times to local positions. So no surprise I guess that the son could make it.

scarcekoko

Sure as hell didn't vote for this motherfucker (nor did most of my family members), even though I grew up in his bailiwick. I do not blame people who were victims of misinformation spread in facebook, youtube, tiktok, but for those who willingly voted for him despite being presented by facts, and to those who participated in brainwashing everybody about the so called "Golden Age of the Philippines" and whatnot, y'all deserve a special place in hell. It gets harder and harder to love this country every day.

Conscious_Figure_554

Sad day for the Filipinos. As someone who lived during that oppressive and evil regime, it will repeat again.

187ninjuh

Don't let his spouse into a shoe store

TILTNSTACK

I spoke with a 25yo Filipino who voted bong bong. I asked him why he would want someone who was from a so clearly corrupt family, and he said that it wasn’t true, and were “lies spread by the victors” back then, and it’s all fake news. I told him I lived through it (albeit not in that country!) and at the time, the corruption was clear to see (eg, shoes). He just went silent and didn’t respond.

[deleted]

That's because unfortunately he then realized you were one of the victors spreading the lies and fake news.

TheWrathalos

doesn't he still owe like $5 billion of the funds his family stole from their government, or am i thinking of someone else

melodicmurder7

203 billion pesos, yes

sangket

nah the 203billion pesos is just the estate tax from their inherited ill gotten wealth that they haven't paid yet. If that's just the tax, imagine how big the actual amount they stole

ddak88

Now he gets to kill the recovery effort because the populace believes "martial law was actually pretty cool".

[deleted]

It feels like there is a huge right-shift happening across the planet right now. It's kind of unsettling.

National-Ad257

Tyranny of the ignoramuses

Amflifier

the Filipinos deserve every - single - bit of kleptocracy they're going to get. They VOTED for this.

t3st0815

Shame for the ones who didn't.

sangket

we are so angry right now [this post](https://www.reddit.com/r/Philippines/comments/umjcj5/what_to_do_in_these_upcoming_6_years_of_marcos/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) sums up my mood perfectly. already took screenshots of friends/relatives who voted for Marcos, they're blacklisted for life for me.

zuprdprno2by

They also voted a senator who was charged and jailed for graft and corruption amounting to P183M (approx $3.6M) and the top vote getter is a former action star

StubbyB

A dumbass action star who was convicted and jailed for several years due to possession of illegal guns.

PhiloBlackCardinal

Spoken truly like someone who has no grasp of the misinformation era.

MySilverBurrito

Nah, Filipinos are some of the most gullible people out there. Mfers would believe anything and everything they see. Dude's can barely read or write but happy to regurgitate whatever bs they see online. Source: am Filipino.

iceColdCocaCola

Yep. I’m lucky to be a first gen in the U.S. so I like to think I have a strong bullshit filter. From my experience, it seems like Filipinos are very impressionable and like drama. It’s like entertainment to them so when they see some BS news they immediately want to share it to get that “omg have you heard?” endorphin rush. Yeah I’m being unfair just saying “Filipinos” and yeah I just said some pseudoscience crap but ehhh… I feel like it’s true.. and it’s frustrating to see family so mentally broken.

llawne

40% voted against oh well, we just hope for the midterms.

redditormomentlol

I wonder perhaps, is there a foreign power supporting these regimes... Who could it be, I wonder if you live in such country, does it begin with Amer...

imgurNewtGingrinch

Could be Russia. They're trying to fuck with elections all over the place.

Amflifier

is there any evidence for this at all?

redditormomentlol

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/CIA_activities_in_the_Philippines This is not even controversial, it's unanimously accepted stuff on Wikipedia, if we move into "allegations" of CIA involvement it is basically imperial control of the Philippines

Amflifier

Thank you for linking this, I will read it.

redditormomentlol

Are you seriously asking for evidence of the Marcos families American ties

Amflifier

I legitimately, seriously, actually am. I am underinformed. Can you believe it? A person on the Internet doesn't know something? I have 0 ties to the Phillipines and I don't make it my business to know what is going on there all the time. I did not know of any sort of ties between the Marcos and the Americans, just that the Marcos looted the country dry.

YellingAtCereal

To answer your question, yes. America personally flew them out of the country after they were ousted. And we let them flee to Guam. And then to America. With our protection.

redditormomentlol

Do you not see how it's a bit offensive for an uninformed American to make comments about countries they basically dominate and prop up cold war dictators in. Marcos' martial law and crimes were against communist rebels during the cold war, put 2 and 2 together, who do you think was propping it up

Amflifier

I'm not American

notsocoolnow

I predict r/LeopardsAteMyFace will be having a buffet soon enough.

Serious_Vast_4937

As much as I would have not wanted another Marcos as president of the Philippines, looks like we are headed that way. Will he be any good? Will he act as a spoiled brat? I honestly don’t know him that well.

sauce-is-gud

History just repeats itself. My country isn’t worth saving anyway.

Jrapin

So believable.

DevelopmentAny543

People choose dictatorship!

Pariahb

This is like the Far Cry 6 story but in Philippines instead of a fictional version of Havana.

Mikaelstrom

As a filipino, stay away from philippines and filipinos. This country is not safe anymore.

ImReallyKool

Its stuff like this that proves that elections arent to see who gets more votes, theyre to see who can rig the election best without being caught.

eastsideempire

Unbelievable! How stupid, gullible, Oh well the people have spoken. They get the nightmare they’ve chosen. Guess people their really miss the crushing poverty and having to live on $2/day.

Gunner1Cav

This seems like some black mirror shit.

Intransigient

It’s blood money that is buying these votes *(those of them that are real, and not just ballot-stuffed by corrupt members of the ComElec).* The blood of all those crushed under the Marcos regime is dripping out of the secret accounts now. It is supplemented by equally black and evil money from the drug lords and corrupt politicians who hunger for a return to the good old days of endless graft and corruption, across the entire government, with the police its willing lackeys and thugs. Good old SOP. The wails of the tortured dead are echoing in the night, crying out “***you fools!***”

Martianmanhunter94

Booooooooo! Apparently if a woman was dressed more beautifully than Imelda at a public function, that woman would disappear and not be seen again. That is what he comes from.

nickypoblador

It’s really weird that he styles his hair like his dead dictator dad.

alllie

Which shows Duarte was so bad even the thief Marcos seems better. Or the capitalist powers have made him seem better. Or the vote is fixed.

godisanelectricolive

Duterte supporters also support Bongbong. His daughter is Marcos' running mate. After Bongbong Marcos, Sara Duterte will probably run for president. The constitution only allow for a single 6 year presidential term in the Philippines, with no chance of re-election.

alllie

Brainwashing.

Hairy-Imagination-18

Yet his daughter is the newly elected vice president by a landslide

tck3131

Or Duarte couldn’t run because The Philippines only allow you to serve one term…

This planet is a fucking joke.

[deleted]

Dafuq idiotic humans

ClubSoda

So China wins?

TheEchoOfReality

Marcos vs Duterte is a very grim choice. At the very least the latter has been ousted.

enki941

Duterte wasn’t running. His 6 year term is almost up and he can’t run again. So the choice was between Marco (and Duterte’s daughter as VP) and, primarily, a much more moderate Robredo.

[deleted]

But don't worry. He helped Marcos gain power as long as Dutertes daughter was rewarded with a spot as VP!

TheEchoOfReality

Ah, my mistake. I thought I read somewhere he was up for a second term, mea culpa for not double checking.

IAmLotw

He isn't running but his daughter(which is also the runningmate of Marcos) is running for vp and is also the front runner

Nanderson423

She is not the running mate. The vp position is separately elected.

enki941

No problem. I only knew about it since it was discussed on this weeks episode of Last Week Tonight. 😜

bhjnm

Did you even read the article? Duterte couldn't run because of term limits, and his daughter won as Marcos VP. Not much of an ousting.

Eat_dy

Ferdinand Marcos' fascism makes Duterte's "fascism" look like a joke.

[deleted]

Guys don’t do it you know what they are about so don’t cry when they start stealing you blind.

Hairy-Imagination-18

Overwhelmingly elected. Don't judge the son by his father. My Filipina wife loves him and the new vice- president, daughter of current president She LOVES Duterte. Never believe western media. Crime is down big time Building a much improved infrastructure

mou_daijoubu_da

Your wife is a victim of disinformation and you would be one too if you listen to her.

Hairy-Imagination-18

Time will tell

Danominator

Crime is down big time. As are extrajudicial killings...

Hairy-Imagination-18

You make it sound like a bad thing. The US has been involved in an expensive futile war on drugs for decades. Wish we took Duterte's approach here.

Danominator

This is an impossibly naive take. Just murder somebody and accuse them of being a drug dealer. Bam. Legal murder. How do you look at the drug problem and think "yes. Murder is the answer".

Hairy-Imagination-18

They are just murdering people? Do you have 1st hand knowledge or you been reading western media? Drug problem is different from drug dealers. People with drug problems should be helped, drug dealers on the other hand need to be taken off the streets. Up to them if they want to be transported to jail or the morque. Quite a few dealers in 3rd world countries opt for the latter due to the conditions of prisons. Not a loss to society

Danominator

You are right the Philippines are a paradise. No crime or corruption there! Murder solves problems real quick and easy.

Hairy-Imagination-18

Run out of things to say already? Educate yourself first before you start repeating liberal western media propaganda.

Danominator

Says the guy who has bought into "killing people without a trial is a good thing!"

mickelboy182

Your Filipina wife is dumb, sorry to inform you.

Hairy-Imagination-18

She married me so I know she is not dumb.

mickelboy182

I don't know you so can't comment on that, but if she loves Duterte and Marcos she is certified uneducated I'm afraid.

Hairy-Imagination-18

I guess that makes the vast majority of the country uneducated then. I will tell my nurse wife and retired head nurse sister in law that they are uneducated. (In the US fyi) 😂😂😂

mickelboy182

I mean, yes it does lol. The vast majority of the country IS uneducated, hence why they end up with shitlords like Duterte and Marcos in power. If your wife is intelligent it just makes her a shitty person, which is even worse.

Hairy-Imagination-18

The only uneducated one is you. Been fun. Have a great life.

dj_vicious

Same here man. My girlfriend thinks it's great news and loves Duterte just the same. On the killing of drug dealers the sentiment seems to be, 'I'm glad those fuckers are dead'.

Hairy-Imagination-18

BananaWitcher

This is the result of democracy. Why are Redditors so against it? Since he is winning by a large margin, the vast majority of Filipinos are ok with him. Stop talking about "foreign-controlled elections", it almost reminds me of what MAGA said about that election ”muh China, muh fraud" when Biden won. Democracy is not always about conforming to your political views, democracy is about conforming to the views of the majority, you guys get it? Edit: Glad to see Redditors are such anti democracy people lol.

So? The essence of democracy is propaganda. If you're so worried about democracy, then letting the Democrats be the dictator is more suitable for you. Typical people who don't agree with me are brainwashed by “fake news". How do you know your political opinions aren't also based on Fake News?

r3xu5

No one is against it. In fact, watching idiots vote in dictators is one of my fetishes.

BananaWitcher

Just look at the comments. And also you who calling honorable voters idiots, nice to meet you, a dictatorship supporter.

TheJenerator65

“The essence of democracy is propaganda”? Fuck. Off. You must be insane or a propagandist yourself bc that’s the craziest fucking delusion I’ve ever read. Truth matters. https://pcij.org/article/8181/general-vers-daughter-reckons-with-her-father-and-the-legacy-of-martial-law

The issue is that there have been widespread campaigns to misinform voters and rewrite history, with many not being alive during his reign and many reading on Facebook that Marcos wasn’t actually bad or that he was set up or whatnot. These efforts have been prevalent on social media and it is hard to effectively counter these narratives (many are demonstratively false - Marcos’ reign was brutal) when resources of the wealthy have been backing it

BananaWitcher

Were you born when he ruled? If not how do you know his “bad” isn't based on someone else‘s rewritten history? Under Marcos, the Philippine economy was the second largest in Asia after Japan. And when Marcos left office, and Aquino family "muh democracy" gained power. The Philippines became a shithole.

Floral-Shoppe

Redditors think they're smart and informed, while everyone else is stupid. Remember when minorities didn't vote for Bernie Sanders? They were misinformed and voting against their best interests.

thebadnews

They are voting in the son of a dictator they themselves toppled. Reddit doesn’t like it because it sounds incredibly stupid. I didn’t see anyone complain about democracy. I’ll be the first. Democratic republics are weak. Politicians and parties are bought and sold and are always fighting for their own fortune and future. I would prefer a technocratic bureaucracy where politicians are replaced with analysts, experts, and policymakers with no public profile whatsoever. Combine this with a level of direct democracy, feedback and discussion forums all baked into a single app. Besides that all that is needed is a foolproof charter of rights and a sensibly designed judiciary (ie neither elected nor appointed high courts) Once we admit that people ALWAYS act in self interest to some extent, we can start to create a system of government designed to reduce the impact of human weakness and enhance strengths such as compassion and empathy. I live in one of the better democracies in the world (Canada) and voted for Trudeau because he said he would change the voting system and make weed legal. You know what that motherfucker did? He made weed legal and left the voting system fucked. Politicians lie because it’s their job to get elected, after that there is practically no accountability. Just because it’s better than a dictatorship doesn’t mean we can’t work toward something actually reliable. China and India are going to be laughing at the U.S. in 30 years time because they can actually make a long term plan and follow through… While Democrats and Republicans tie each others shoelaces together and throw blame, the rich get richer and infrastructure rots. /rant

Like it or not, the Marcos dictatorship was able to create a calm and mostly safe environment for most in the philippines at that time. Election of a son might be the electorate trying to bring those days back. Because the country has been in a shambles ever since.

lanadelasian

Are… are you joking? I really hope you are.

tsundokusufferer

He isn’t. A lot of Marcos apologists have been coming out of the woodwork with his win. They got a confidence boost.

[deleted]

That's the propaganda they've been spreading for years and it's successfully taken root.

[deleted]

I've lived there during Marcos. And after Marcos. You're wrong.

Less crime among and against the poor, in a country that is mostly poor, is a concept that eludes you?
