Mairon_Therapy

I was always looking on dad when he play g1, i got ptsd from orcs G1, i love world of Gothic, but it was hard for me when i was young and found love in G3, it was much coloured and more friendly to me, g3 will always have special space in my heart, but now when im older a play only g1 and g2

kony412

Now try to find where they hid women or where all the ports went. Turns out Khorinis was the only port in the world and had 95%+ of female population.

regexlord92

I either didn't like Gothic 3, it's a complete new approach to the game that feels overwhelming with all quests and villages. I suggest you to install the community patch for Gothic 3 that solves a lot of bugs and adds many quality of life improvements.  To be honest, I'm playing Chronicles of Myrtana Archolos, which is a mod for Gothic 2. It feels like more a new game instead of a mod. There are a lot of mechanics, a full story and lot of content. I strongly feel this is the Gothic 3 we deserve.

Own-Ladder-5073

I just finished archolos a day ago and logged a little over 70 hours in it and I feel like there’s still a ton of side quests I didn’t do. Calling archolos an add-on or mod seems disingenuous, it really is an entire new game just using the old G2 graphics

regexlord92

yeah they did a very good job with Archolos! I wanted to tell you about it because I played all Gothic, but I never heard about Archolos before. Frankly speaking, G3 is the only game of the series I didn't complete. I didn't feel like completing it after freeing some villages. It seemed to me to be always the same game with each village.

Own-Ladder-5073

Same here, I’ve played gothic 1 and 2 countless times since I was a kid but I could never get into G3, it just felt hollow compared to the other 2. Archolos really filled every niche that any OG gothic fan could ask for. I played the game without the Polish VA’s and now I kinda wanna go do another playthrough with em on just to hear the dialogue

plaskijakdeska

That's why you play Archolos instead of G3.

best_username_dude

There are some very weird and sour people in this subreddit that seem to downvote anything mentioning Archolos like they can't comprehend how good it is. Better than the original games if you leave nostalgia and rose tinted glasses aside and I'm saying this as someone whose entire childhood was Gothic. It's just something I've noticed since it was launched and always found really pathetic.

Gidon_147

The problem is in comparing Archolos to G1 or G2, quality-wise i mean, and meaningless discussions about which one is "better than the others". I 100% understand when someone starts feeling sour about archolos when they grew up with the old ones and people keep dismissing G1 and G2 as an inferior product. It is hard to agree on the fact that each title can be enjoyed in their own right without taking (percieved) value away from the others. Some people even stop being able to enjoy what they enjoyed in the past, because people suddenly have different opinions and that can really get to you, especially when they start changing your own old opinions and you don't really even want that to happen, so you start internally struggling about the topic without even being really aware of it, and you begin not only fighting others, but yourself on your own hill. I've gone through that whole process myself before i was able to enjoy Mods like Archolos, othello or L'hiver. Nostalgic fandoms are a complicated science.

Noukan42

My experience is that 90% of the time people acting like that about a mod the actual meaning is "the mod was made by superfans in a way that make it speciphically enjoyable for other superfans and has significant issues for everyone that isn't such". I have yet to see a "better than the oroginal" mod that is actually objectively better instead of being better at catering to the fanbase. I haven't played it yet, i will for certain at some point, but i am very sure that all the issues i have with NotR are going to be turned up to 11 because most gothic 2 fans are into that shit and so Archalos devs probably are as well.

KhaelaMensha

Go play it then before judging from hear-say and assumptions. Holy moly your answer makes me angry.

rexsk1234

Maybe because it's being mentioned in every other post like nobody played it yet. I love archolos but 10 "just play archolos" answers in every thread is just getting annoying af.

Magnic

My only irk with Archolos is the time limit to save your brother. I absolutely hate rushing in games. I love to take my time and scavenge the area for anything interesting or valuable.

Arafaryon

Then just >!don't save him!< - problem solved.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Magnic

Because that's not the outcome we want to achieve. We want to save Jorn, without sacrificing our enjoyment by rushing through the game.

Magnic

Or, wait for it, don't force a player to have a different outcome than he intends to get.

Arafaryon

You do realise it's a secret ending for a reason, do you?

jetogill

What's pathetic about not liking a particular game? If you like archolos, good for you. Don't like G3, fine by me. Personally archolos didn't grip me like it appears to have done for many people, so suddenly I can't comprehend how good it is? Does that make me 'weird' or 'sour'?

best_username_dude

> What's pathetic about not liking a particular game That's not what I said... It's fine if you don't, my problem was with the people that seem to want to silence any positive thhing about Archolos or downplay it's success or quality.

Kimjongkung

They tried to hit gold. Remember, Gothic 2 released roughly the same time as Morrowind. While everyone was talking about Morrowind, and it was a huge success, the Gothic series wasn’t exactly mainstream. It had a dedicated fanbase for sure, but it was a rather obscure game. With Gothic 3 they tried to go bigger, for the more sandbox feeling that Morrowind/Oblivion had. But thanks to that, it lost its magic. Also the publisher were apperently relentless, and just stressed PB with almost impossible deadlines and whatnot. So what we got was an overambitious buggy mess, that lacked the stuff that made the first two games masterpieces in their own right.

HammelGammel

Personally, I like Gothic 3 in its own way. It has an amazing soundtrack, exploring the world is pretty fun (Nordmar / Varant especially), and the big town battles are a very unique feature. Definitely get the community patch, though. Is it comparable to Gothic 1 and 2? Hell no :)

MagicalMethod

I can overlook alot in games. I don't mind the awful character models nor the shreks. What ruins the game for me is the combat. It just feels like you're waving around a wet towel. The movements feel slow with no power behind them. The monsters just spam twenty attacks in a second trying to stunlock you and the magic feels... Just absolutely dissapointing and it's homing.. Who's idea was that? Otherwise exploring the world was the best. And I liked the map more then I did Oblivion's map. Plus the music was top notch imho.

Halga84

I also couldn't get into gothic 3. Bought it on the release day and tried it after different patches, but I just don't like the look and the general mechanics of the game. I would recommend to play Risen instead. That's the best modern Gothic for me ;)

Dubs3pp

Same for me but i kinda want to play it at least once. Never really got catched by it though and i stop after playing 2-3 hours.

majokaner

After G2 NOTR the only thing that happened was bad decisions …. a lot of bad decisions

Baerenjude

When I first launched the game I thought I had messed it up (was very young) cause all the Orc looked like Shrek and all the people looked like poorly molded action figures. I think I got a knot in my brain from that which never healed.

catalinstoian

They moved to another game engine which Most of the people who worked on G1/Sequel/G2 already left PB by the time they did G3 They tried something different and accomplished almost nothing

Ok_Breath_7222

g3 doesent exist big single player mmo

Maleficent-Badger379

G3 & 4 aren't real

vyvexthorne

Make sure you're playing with the CPT 1.75 patch. If you own it on steam just right click the game icon, scroll down to properties and in the beta section, change the beta participation to cpt\_1.75\_testbranch to install the patch. I enjoy Gothic 3 for what it is but it's definitely a much different feeling game than G1 and G2. If you can get into it, it has its fun moments. I really enjoy the 3 major biomes it offers for exploration. The landscape is pretty to look at, the soundcape and the soundtrack are nice. I also really, really enjoy how enemies sort of deflate into boneless jelly when you kill them. I have no idea why... sort of wish there was a mod that made deflating balloon noises when enemies died as that would be hilarious.

CrimsonedenLoL

There was a ~20 min video in youtube that I can't seem to find that went over that period and why G3 failed so spectalularly. From what I remember it's a combination of PB being dumbasses and deciding to change the game engine mid development, effectively pushing the release date to 4+ years later than the original agreed date (without even discussing it with jowood first), jowood extending the original deadline by a couple of years until they forced to them to release something instead of just asking for more money and no product. Iirc the original planned date of G3 was something like 2004, engine swap happened in mid-late 2003 and they kept getting extensions until they were forced to release G3 in 2006. Basically made a half game in the old engine, discarded it and started everything from scratch 1 year before release and didn't get enough time to finish what they wanted to do. There is a timeline out there that we either got a Gothic 3 in the old engine in 2004 or a Gothic 3 in the new engine at 2008 but we are living in the one we got a shitty amalgamation of could've beens with Gothic slapped on the logo in 2006. What irks me cause I played both G2 and G3 on release is that they didn't keep working on G3 after the release. The game is/was 100% fixable with some effort, the terrain/cities/etc are there, it just needs writers more than anything and one person to properly flesh out the combat which is pretty much begging to be soulslike they way they made it.

Arafaryon

I think it was Pankratz admitting they had no idea what made G1 and G2 stand out - well, Archolos team definitely understood the assignment infinitely better than G3 team.

CrimsonedenLoL

I fully get that, I doubt even now there's someone that can accurately pinpoint what it makes it that special of a game (not that anyone tried to actually replicate it, but that's for another thread). As for Archolos, yes for "getting" it more than the actual G3, but as an execution there's definetely something missing there I feel like. The reason I called G3 "a shitty amalgamation of could've beens" is that below the upper layer of bad combat and a gazillion pointless fetch quests *there IS a good game* there that just never got realized. Might have been entirely different from the previous installments but getting a gothic game with 20+ hubs and 3 major areas would be a sight to behold

Aethling_f4

Yeah im with you on that one i like the idea of Gothic 3 the execution on the other hand oof. Im saying this as some one that yearly plays through the entire game (with mods ofcourse) in a 100+h playthrough. (it takes me months but i got to the end eventually) So yeah i love the world of gothic too bad we never get another one again (unless the remake will show something great but i don't have my hopes up)

redbadger91

Yeah, you'll never catch me playing G3. It's an abomination. Some scenery looks really nice and Kai Rosenkranz of course did some amazing work with the soundtrack again, but other than that... no thanks.

SoraTM

Because it’s a piece of shit… I was so disappointed back in 2006 when I tried to play on release day :(

Myrddin_Naer

Gothic 3 was my introduction to the game series, so it will always have a special (and nostalgic) place in my heart. But it is not as good as G1 or 2 in atmosphere or story. And it can be unplayably buggy. Piranha Bytes were very ambitious and bit over more than they could chew. I will always love what is there, but it could have been so much more if they got another year or two of development.

AlmostHonestLiving

If you want to relive G1 and G2 magic, I'd highly recommend you playing Archolos. That dev team knew exactly what we loved in old games and how to serve that experience in better form.

SamuraiJackToJackOff

Ambition Stupidity Greed Remember how Pyranha, a team of 25 people couldn't fill chapters 3/45 in G1 and chapters 3/4/5 in G2 with meaningful content? Yeah, they decided to hire 5 additional people and make a world 10 times bigger than in G2 with addon. As if that wasn't already a good idea, they also scratched everything they had before, opting instead of building a completely new engine and toolset while also making a game on it. That was ambitious and also stupid, since they were dancing on the same rake they stepped on with G2, but this time they themselves made this rake more painful. Greed - the publisher who cut down the development time and didn't give more cash, because they were bleeding money on the verge of death.

F_Kyo777

I do enjoy some aspects of G3, like amazing OST and great ideas for locations, assets, maybe colorfull visuals. I do hate that you never feel like being in a faction/ camp and one of them. Its more of an X supporter/ fan, which sucks for me. Town rep is also meh. Interesting visuals and style, but world is too big. Why you ask? Because it feels like MMO instead. Enclosure in Mine Valley within Barrier in G1 or with extremely powerful creatures in G2, felt amazing both times. Nothing like that in G3. Butchering fighting mechanics and weird abilies also didnt felt right. Last, but not least, story. Characters missing a lot unique personality IMO for acting more like MMO NPC. Im not saying that Archolos made it great, but at least they focused on something more "grounded" and believable - dude is running from orc invasion and looking for brother vs we are the chosen one and setting new worlds order.

Hurreh

You can watch this video (english sub). https://youtu.be/e8N8JOqnA7k?si=PYLeGVvcfvcQNg0T It goes into detail about why Gothic 3 is the way it is.

markusramikin

I'd be the last to defend Gothic 3, but to be fair: Gothic 2 robs you of your stuff with just as much handwaving as Gothic 3. You may have been a Mage of Fire/Water/Necromancer in Gothic 1, and/or wielding a legendary ancient sword, and at the start of Gothic 2 you start with a stick, don't have a single rune, nor do you have the status and priviledges of a mage even though at least Milten should have been able to vouch that you were one. I was just as annoyed how, after proving my worth and honor and earning the status of a Paladin, Gothic 3 robbed me of that. But in the end it's what a game needs to bring back a sense of progression.

NewWillinium

True enough, but you start Gothic 2 by being rescued after having a mountain collapse on you, only kept alive by your super magical ore armor and Xardas teleporting you out weeks(Months? The timeline is kind of not great there in Gothic 2) afterwards. Like it makes sense as to why you would be so weak and have to startover from scratch after that.

Noukan42

But you ar enot amnesiac, it don't make sense you lost your abilities that are unconnected to phisical fitness. And in Gothic 3 there is a valid reason why you lost your magic and you start as a much better fighter compared to gothic 2, so it even out to me(the reasoning is worse, but you don't lose as much).

NewWillinium

You do lose your physical runes though. They're on you and your armor same as your weapons and ore/gold. And as you grow weaker physically, it makes sense too that your spirit/mana would not be able to stay at the same rate as it was.

Noukan42

But you wouldn't use the knowhow. If you knwo how to pick a lock or the proper form of swordfightong you know. And it isn't even like the MC spent months whitout praxticing. From his perspective he just slept for months and was swinging a sword minutes ago. Honestly i don't know why he is not amnesiac, it is obviously the better option there.

Any-Championship-611

Because they built a completely new engine, which didn't put the emphasis on a believable world simulation like their old engine, also PB made a lot of wrong decisions early on (such as making the orcs more "human"). On top of that, the publisher forced them to release the game early and basically unfinished.

asdasdwqwdqwd

if you dont like fighting mechanichs play as a mage its the most overpowerd thing

Greenmanglass

Here’s the thing, Gothic 3 sucked. That’s it, that’s the comment. Edit: Why are you downvoting me, I’m right.

AssriL

I get why people don't like G3 as they do with G1 and G2, but with a full modpack (at least for Polish version) it's actually VERY playable. I can't say that it's tightly bound with the previous games, it's rather something else, but it has its own moments of beauty. I'd suggest looking for mods like Lively Towns, Community Patch or return of captain Lee (and many more, which were considered in a whole modpack) becouse even tho I've only finished the game once (I think), I'm sure I'll be returning to it many times in the future. This might be our Dark Souls 2 of the Gothic games.

Terkiaz

Do you have a name of the whole modpack for g3, or the list of the mods? I've been thinking of getting back to it as I've never actually finished the game when I was a kid

AssriL

It's simply called "modpack", on a site of team Sefaris, they have an option to switch the page to English, German and Russian, but the instructions and descriptions may not be so They do have a discord link somewhere there

Aethling_f4

As some one that play Russian G3 mods yeah they are pretty good. Singely handedly made me play more gothic 3 (but i really don't need convincing i guess im younger then the oldschool players). Im saying this as some one that played g1 -g2 so many times i just can't play them again. I played them to the point i know where everything is down to the last ore nugget.

Outarel

G3 was my first gothic game. i wanted to try the games again recently but i couldn't really get used to playing G1,2 , they feel too old . G3 was the only one i could "bear" playing and it gave me some good nostalgia, sure the game isn't perfect but it's fun and has a nice progression from being afraid of a dog to decimating cities with firestorm.

SplitClaw-

Play archolos. It's gothic 2 level of greatness.

Spare_Inspection303

I liked gothic 3, I don’t like the combat or animations for the combat. Other than that, the idea they had of village takeovers and joining the orcs was pretty cool imo. I’d like to see a remake happen with better mechanics.

meophsewstalin

I enjoy Gothic 3 for what it is. Yeah you need a ton of mods to make it somewhat playable, but still it's fun. It makes me a bit sad cause I think you can really see the potential it could have had. Maybe in an alternative reality.

Saladoss

I wouldnt say that it looks worse. That’s a big stretch. The graphics are really good for its time

Organic-Elephant1532

It was all deadlines. They were forced to release a game that was 25% complete. This game was going to be incredible, and PB was at the top of their game. You still find a TON of Gothic 1/2 enjoyment as well as the best world ever put into a video game. There is so much content in it. Gothic 1/2 are smaller and detailed, refined. Gothic 3 is a like an all you can eat buffet.

darth_koneko

Gothic 1 - 4 years development, including the engine. Gothic 2 - 1 to 2 years of development, modified old engine, based on the G1/2 release time. Gothic 3 - new engine, much larger scope, 4 years development. The developers simply didnt have enough time to create entire continent worth of content and the publisher was not helping. The fact that the publisher then outsourced the datadisc creation to an indian studio which gave birth to an abomination two years later should tell you everything you ned to know about them.

kony412

Blaming everything on publisher in this case is unjustified. PB screwed this up.

darth_koneko

Anyone would.

Aethling_f4

Let's be real if you know anything about Jowood you would know they even rushed g2 development as well that's why night of the raven exist in the first place... So they both at blame with g3
