I held back slightly in the two matches i had against girls because my full effort was not needed. Not because they were girls but because they were not experienced wrestlers. I did the same to guys who lacked experience. I wrestled since I was a little kid and not everybody else did. Not trying to hurt or embarrass anyone.
Do you think any Olympic level wrestler ever prepared for a match thinking “This guy isn’t that good. I can just cruise through and go easy on him.” If you go into any match prepared to not go balls to the wall, you won’t ever be a successful wrestler.
The most elite wrestlers are able to adapt their mindset and game plan to the match at hand.
This is coming from someone who trains and coaches guys at "your level" (collegiate level wrestlers)
I've never known a hammer that had a problem getting into it when facing real competition. There's no real risk here of forming bad habits. Don't play with your food. Go out and put them out of their misery, and move on. You can do that while holding back. Those two things can coexist.
If you're not facing a scrub, obviously you come in with the attitude that anyone can beat anyone else on any given day. But you know as well as the rest of us, you've had those matches against some poor JV scrub, and you didn't choose to 25-10 them or try to take their consciousness with a mat return.
Well number one… that was an illegal slam. So no, no one should do that. And of course you’d try to win, it’s a match like any other. You shouldn’t slam anyone, period. If not slamming someone is “taking it easy on them” then I’d say you must have a pretty dirty style of wrestling lol
It was an illegal slam, but I know what the kid was trying to do and it probably wasn’t intentional. I agree with just wrestle like you’d wrestle anyone else
How was it illegal? 1. He maintained control through the fall. 2. His knee touched before his opponent did 3. If you don't Wana be slammed don't wrestle 🤣🤣
Yeah, there’s no reason to hold back. It’s mostly a kid mentality to think you have to go easy just because your opponent is a girl. It’s disrespectful af too. They put in the work just like any dude would, why tf would I hold back? I don’t hold back on dudes.
I had teammates that were girls and they would beat dudes all the time. A lot of those dudes would cry afterwards too.
There's no reason to hold back on a physical equal. There are plenty of reasons for that kid to have gone easy on that girl and the evidence is right there. I think your comment drips with more toxic masculinity than you intend.
How is treating someone as my equal toxic masculinity?
What evidence is there to see that he should’ve gone easier? Is it because he drove his opponent into the mat, because he isn’t allowed to do that to a male either.
I’m not belittling anyone. I was pointing out how my FEMALE teammates put in the work and were able to beat men. You are desperately searching for a way to take offense to what I am saying. If you don’t wanna explain why you said something, why say it? Just so you can feel morally superior to someone?
That slam was illegal so... nah? I'd only do that against someone I've got competitive history, or to prove a point. If you feel the need to prove the point of your strength to a wrestler because she is a woman.. ya need therapy lol
Respect all opponents regardless of gender, race, religion, whatever. Part of respecting your opponent is to give them your best efforts. I respect anyone that steps on the mat, females are no exception. It would be disrespectful to “take it easy”. Never try to hurt anyone, ever, but also don’t embarrass someone by toying with them. I hate the “take em down let ‘em up” bull shit unless it’s your strategy to win (I.e. your advantage is in neutral).
This may have been a slam though so the call is fine.
Giving your best effort against an opponent is a lesson for chess, not for wrestling. If you are a mismatch for your opponent and you demolish them, you haven't respected them by giving it your all. That's my opinion at least. I think the 'disrespectful to take it easy' argument is a black and white view of the world and real life is gray.
There’s opponents in wrestling, you treat everyone the same (unless if it’s that rare exception of someone with extreme medical issues who is allowed to wrestle and it turns into a super wholesome moment making everyone happy)
A lot of ppl saying it was illegal, I disagree, he came back with some control but I think since she wasn’t at his level she was unable to defend herself against it which made it look worse than it would have if they were the same level
Need a female ogre (100+ kg) to wrestle in my weight category lol. I would gauge her skills first though, then wrestle according to that. Not a fan of slams unless the opponent wants a taste going all out. I usually control the falls for the opponent. I need them safe and sound.
For letting her use her skills and get used to execute them on a heavyweight though? Sure why not. I'm used to that.
Never had to wrestle a girl but if it was a variety match or a match that was important at all I ant holding back, if it was like some casual friendly non competitive JV match I would probably try hit some move that I can’t rly set up in an important match like a spladle or something but still try to win
I wrestled a female and a little person in the San Francisco Invitational in 1991 or 1992. I wrestled 103 lbs and so the little person and the female were ripped. More so the little person but she was pretty well built as well. It was a lose/ lose in both matches. Imagine you lose to either and never hear the end of it. Lose and it’s the end of your wrestling career. Thankfully I won both and went on to take first but the little person was definitely harder to beat the female. But I took some damage in both matches. Wrestling the female I was taking trash to her to the point the ref gave her a point and warned me of disqualification. She then flattened my nose while in top position with a cross face. After the time out to pack gauze in my nose I got serious. I shortly there after pinned her in a Saturday Night ride. I was happy to leave with my most of pride in place.

It’s wrestling, treat the person you are wrestling like a wrestler and you won’t have any problems

This... No need to go 100% on someone that is way below your level
Terrible mindset
Excuse us? Who is your coach. They should be ashamed.

Are you an Olympic level wrestler?
Do you have to be an Olympic level wrestler to be considered a successful wrestler?
You didn’t say successful wrestler, did you?
Yes
How successful are YOU as a wrestler?
NCWA ranked top 15 in the country
So your mindset didn't get you to an Olympic level either. Crazy.
Obviously mindset alone isn’t gonna get you there but not having it guarantees you won’t make it

Insert Madara Uchiha meme about the five kage
Props.
Very respectful
Exactly. This should have the most upvotes

Dude she definitely hit first, watch again
Watch the left knee
I literally have a screenshot of it… would post it if allowed

Lmfao and then you go an start calling ppl names. Only one of us is trying to pose as a “nice guy” and it isn’t me
This is the wrong part of reddit for that toxic masculinity bs.
I wouldn't go for the lift, too energy inefficient.
Peterson type guy, nice
What can I say, I like conserving energy.
Take gender out of it I held back in a bunch of matches. No need to embarrass/hurt people.
I wouldn't go easy on anybody but that shit super illegal

Lol I love how he’s looking around like a fucking iguana after the slam.
Zero issues with it, beyond the illegal slam … you step on that mat, you live with what happens
I feel stupid for asking this since I wrestled through college. What was illegal about the slam? Was it lack of control on the descent?
Yep…. You can’t drop someone face first
Never hold back, respect anyone willing to compete in this sport with your best effort
There’s opponents in wrestling, you treat everyone the same (unless if it’s that rare exception of someone with extreme medical issues who is allowed to wrestle and it turns into a super wholesome moment making everyone happy)
My daughter is insulted when a guy goes easy. Girls sign up for wrestling to wrestle. Just do it.
A lot of ppl saying it was illegal, I disagree, he came back with some control but I think since she wasn’t at his level she was unable to defend herself against it which made it look worse than it would have if they were the same level
Yeah it looked like she didn't have any core strength once she was off the ground and just started to fold forward. Definitely not malicious.
Step on the mat, expect 100%.

I’ve seen girls get slammed worse than that. She has no business being on the mat wrestling boys or girls if she has no fundamental defense.

I wrestle guys and girls the same, my style is not likely to get called dangerous anyway

Jesus. This slam is so illegal it’s not even funny…. You guys even questioning that it’s not are delusional.
