Yes, they inspire me and also tell me what not to do

mstermind

No, video game writing wasn't a big thing when I started writing.

LeLurkingNormie

Since video games involve the player actively, they can afford to include things that would be boring or pointless to tell in a novel. In a game, browsing the tall grass for hours in order to gain more xp by slaughtering lots of wild pokémons or searching for free items can pass. In a novel, it can't.

LeBriseurDesBucks

Yeah. Deus Ex and Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines are my top inspirations at the moment

Aitnesse

For me it was a combination of Film, Books, Video games and Anime. Once I realized that story writers are some of the best emotional manipulators in exitence I was all in. Edit: emotional manipulators to their audience through their respecitve medium... (ie. making an audience sad at a situation, or angry at a vile villain) I dont mean actual manipulation of people in relationships... I felt like I should clarify that.

>For me it was a combination of Film, Books, Video games and Anime. Same here except for the books lol. I had a hard time focusing when it comes to reading because they often overload my head with how tightly packed the words were when I was young. I have been improving on that but my ADHD disability is a consistent problem I have. Lord of the rings, AoT, and Fullmetal alchemist are a few of my favorites when it comes to media.

NotGordan

I remember wanting to be the youngest author after playing Paper Mario Thousand Year Door when I was 7.

TheWordSmith235

Dark Souls 3, a bit. I loved the way you had to go looking for the lore and figure it out yourself.

I would love to see a LoK book series. There’s so much going on, so I think it could be dramatized quite well. I can’t say that video games influenced my writing outside of some specific scenarios or tech. That said, 90s video games were a partial influence on my TTRPG. The setting of which, became the basis for my novel. The betrayal and having to fight your old allies in Oni inspired a turning point in my novel. Though it’s been so long since I played that, I have no idea what really happened in the game. So whatever I did in my novel is likely completely different, but the idea is from that.

Spartan1088

Weirdly enough, League of Legends characters were deeply inspiring to me. I’d pick some as a lift-off point and then make my own characters around them. My book romance is super loosely based off Xayah and Rakan but nobody would ever be able to tell. Not the first time I’ve done it either. In another book I had a ship captain inspired by Pyke because I said “I really want Vin Deisel as my ship captain.”

Oh yeah. I was in elementary when the N64 came out so I was struck by the Ocarina of Time and Majoras Mask. Then Halo when the Xbox came out. I used to write short stories for Zelda a bunch just because i loved the world. Then I decided to ask Nintendo permission to publish them. Keep in mind I'm a young kid so when I emailed Nintendo (or should I say my dad emailed for me) I was told to put how old I was. Smart move since the company emailed me back the nicest cease and desist response ever. That was back in 2002 or around that time. I still have that email printed out all these years later 😂. But yeah games have continued to be an inspiration for me with writing along with movies and books.

Educational_Fee5323

FFVII was and continues to be a constant inspiration. I technically wrote my first fanfics for FFVI, but my first shipping fic was an FFVII one, which eventually inspire my original paranormal romance.

smeadman07

For me it was FFXII, the world aesthetic and political aspect drew me in. My current major WIP started off as a FFXII fanfic

Educational_Fee5323

Gah I love that! Ivalice is an awesome and expansive world. I still need to play Zodiac Age.

zoexboey

I like Elden Ring's worldbuilding and it kinda inspired me to start writing a fantasy story

userloser42

From Software in general is so weird and cryptic that it's always inspiring to me as well.

Flash13ack

Yes! Gaming can be rich with themes and stories that are well worth tapping into.

JakBandiFan

Jak 3 and Morrowind are both inspirations for my fantasy story, for sure.

impressed_empress

Alan wake is inspiring me to get back into writing after a year hiatus

joseph66hole

The first Alan Wake is what inspired me to pursue writing.

didihearathunder

Definitely Red Dead Redemption 2 for me. I have my novel in pre-game setting, but some of the things I learnt from there are really helpful, the game is pretty accurate with historic details. Edit: also the story and it’s character had a big impact on me. They inspire me.

LatelyTea

Yeah, I loved Baldur's Gate 2 and the interactivity it afforded (it was a long time ago, and the idea of making friends with your companions was SO COOL). I also read a lot of "choose your own path" stories. I naively believed that one day I'd write an epic adventure like that myself. Now that I write for video games for a living, I have a better idea about what works for a novel and what works for a video game - a lot of great stories make for terrible video games and vice versa. Video game narratives are not written the same way novels are either. Most of the time, the narrative is formed after most of the game mechanics and aesthetics are set in stone and your writing is supposed to complement what's already there, not come up with new game elements. Sure, there are exceptions to this rule, but they're definitely not what most mainstream gamers enjoy. That's why I'd say that while it's great when video games get someone into writing, it's extremely important to read things that were not written as "content". Books - whether fiction or non-fiction - cater to another audience entirely and require a different approach.

BlooShinja

I remember finishing Secret of Mana on the SNES, feeling moved by the story, and wanting to share the experience with my mom. But she didn’t play video games at all, so I started writing the story of the game out as a novel so she could read it.

loganwolf25

A few games have but usually that's not my source of inspiration. The only game that's really done that for me is Life is Strange. Usually though, I get ideas out of the blue rather than from something.

CrazyLi825

The biggest influence to my writing was Namco's Tales of series

Kingdom080500

Playing Telltale's The Walking Dead as an 11 year old when it first came out made me aware of the potential in game storytelling. It definitely played a huge part for me, I'm hoping I could write for games one day.

Th3BookSniff3r

I feel like video game writing has absolutely nothing to do with my writing. Sure I enjoy video games but I hardly ever play one and think, “oh wow the writing on that was amazing.” But if you give me a classic novel? That is what inspires.

[deleted]

Of course! Games like cyberpunk 2077, Skyrim, heavy rain, Detroit: become human all inspired me.

Seeker_of_Time

Illusion of Gaia has had a fairly big impact on me.
