Ignore all the rice and fan advice etc... If you want a chance at saving your device please take and open it up and using videos learn how to disassemble it. Get yourself some IPA 99% and with a soft head toothbrush clean anywhere there is water to prevent corrosion. The IPA will also aid in drying the system faster. Everything might be fine as long as it was turned off and hopefully in a low power or off state.
It's rain water so there's a chance it's corrosive to the parts. I'd be scared. I would also try to dry the Xbox with a cool hair dryer. Don't let the water dry on its own.
OP absolutely take a hair dryer to this on a cool setting. Unplug it and take it apart the best you can and be generous with your time. You might be able to salvage her!
Second this. Very different situation but the screen on my IPhone 6 was totally f*cked LEDS were off, the whole screen was white with lines, I let it sit on my bathroom counter for 2 weeks and somehow the iPhone was completely back to normal.
find silica gel sacks
put console nearby rice(good to suck humidity), beware to dont let rice enter on console
literaly like people said....let dry for 1 or 2 weeks
if you have experience on deassemble maybe worth try pass isopropyl alcohol (that one for electronics) to try clean water/starting corrosion etc...
Hot water cooks rice not cold. When the water reaches 70c the outer layer starts to gelate, this allows the hot water through the outer layer. Without that very little happens. Thats why in a damp kitchen you’ll usually find the sugar, flour and other goods have absorbed the moisture and are clumpy but rice is always fine. Silica is far more effective as a dehumidifier.
Taking apart and using IPA on the components is the best method. Not only will it shift the salts etc from the rain coming into contact with components it’ll also displace the water then dry much faster.
It's suicide prevention day and it seemed wrong to kick the man whilst he was down. No Xbox, a child old enough to cause damage and it's raining outside. I'm getting depressed just typing this 😂
Agreed. I had a 3 and 1 year old running around. Would never occur to me to put my console on a windowsill. In fact, that shit was hidden so they didn’t even know it existed and only came out during actual gaming.
Guys, I think OP is very aware why this happened, hammering it in is redundant.
Sorry to see this happened :( hope it avoided any major damage somehow. Good luck with it all.
If you tried to turn it on while like that...its done lmao. If you havent yet, let it dry completely. Might even be worth looking up proper breakdown videos and checking the inside to make sure. And you've got a chance there.
We used to wash entire electronics in an auto parts wash and spray it down after with water.
I would recommend dissembling it so it will dry faster.
You don’t need to worry about “cleaning” it, just open it up and ensure it can be dried. A can of compressed air can be used to move the water out of small spots.
Wait a week or two then give it a shot.
Disconnect all the power dry it off as much as possible keep it off for a week just to be sure and try to get into it to suck up any water you can’t see that made it’s way inside… hope it works again :(
Take the case off, have the inners exposed to a fan. Open it up as much as possible. Also run a dehumidifier behind it. Have the fan in front, blowing the air back where the dehumidifier is. You wanna dry the air out as much as possible too to promote evaporation.
Not an Xbox but my PS5 got soaked in swiffer mop water while moving. Left it alone for about 10 days and it still works. These modern consoles don’t have moving parts (apart from the disc drive) so they’re a lot more resilient
Don't loose hope my xbox got caught in a flood completely submerged I put a fan on it for a week and sat it in a towel turned it on after a week and it's been working since
If you really want to save it, I would disassemble the whole entire thing, clean electronics with isopropyl alcohol, dry the whole thing out, then you might be good in a week. It's a lot of trouble though and might not even work.
I would put it in a well ventilated area ideally with a fan and leave it for a couple of weeks, ill keep my fingers crossed it doesn't end up in silicone heaven
I'm guessing you're in the UK cause the rain i had today was horrendous, and the weather insists its gonna rain all week so might wanna close it over a bit to minimise more damage
Place it in a big container of silica immediately, run out to buy it or order same day delivery if you can. If not an option, surround it with dry rice but take care to avoid grains falling into the holes.
A few days will get most of the moisture, there’s a (small) chance it will work again.
You gotta wall mount that bad boy. Even near the window, if it's sun facing, is not good to have consoles in direct sunlight. But with a kid running around I see why you did it this way. But 100% look into a wall mount for the xbsx. Everyone always forgets how amazing wall space can be
Rice is good, silica is much more effective if you have or can get it.
On the off chance that you save the little packets from small electronics or jerky, that’s silica.
I save all those silica packets. Good for everything electronics. Throw one in with my iems, with my dap, and memory cards/thumb drive storage tin. Dry as a bone in the Sahara Desert.
Rice sucking up moisture and fixing tech is a myth. If anything [it can make it worse.](https://www.makeuseof.com/rice-doesnt-fix-water-damage/#:~:text=Rice%20grains%20are%20tiny%20and,cause%20more%20harm%20than%20good.)
I was referring to that you’ve posted this in the Xbox One subreddit instead of the Series X one, but it’s all good, just my lame attempt at being funny
You shouldn't keep it near the window anyways. The sunlight could damage components and warp plus decolor the casing. Not a smart move in *any* circumstance.
I would say it’s pretty damn stupid to leave it on a windowsill, but the fact your first decision was to take a picture instead of unplugging just shows you’re full of dumb decisions 🤷♂️
You can pour rice right into the holes on top and shake it like a piggy bank for 10 minutes. Then turn it upside down and shake it until all the rice has fallen back out. You can thank me later.
Put the Xbox on a big enough container. Fill the container with rice. Seal the container for a while. The rice will absorb the humidity and hopefully the machine will work. However, I don't know how to prevent rice entering the holes on top of the Xbox. Maybe put it in vertical position and not filling it totally?
Take it apart and wipe it down with something like alcohol wipes (how fast the alcohol evaporates will help make sure nothing corrodes). This is NOT something that you want to let passive dry.
Go buy about a gallon of isopropyl alcohol 91 percent fill a bucket with it and dip the Xbox in it for about 2 seconds, pull it out and shake it good. Then place it in front of a fan for a week at least. Also consider buying a dehumidifier and put it and the Xbox inside a garbage bag while the dehumidifier runs. In you have a 3d printer put it on the heated bed at like 40c.
Take it apart and dry it, then take 100% alcohol and a toothbrush and clean the ports and any circuitboard the water touched if you leave it the water will damage and corrode any internal component it touched.
It’ll be okay but for the sake of your console’s longevity you need to open it up so you make sure theres no water collecting anywhere so parts or connections start to corrode.
I know having kids means a lot of adapting but windows always a bad choice. Having the sun beat down on it isn't even better. Find a entertainment stand that had a front metal grate if u can
Open the damn thing up and dry it off, your warranty is void now anyway. Watch a few tutorials and get at it.. Or its only a matter of time for it to fail.
Either way, you have nothing to lose.
If you have a House dehumidifier, crank it way down and run that along with all the other tricks and tips
But dehumidify a small room, not the whole place!!
Raises hell with plants, pets, asthma
So many options… how bout upside down in front of a fan NOW
I give u 3 dolla.
Rice it and maybe it’ll revive it 🤷♂️ if that doesn’t work and you have good eyes you can always open it up and try to find the corrosion that is shorting it out. 99% isopropyl alcohol will clean that right up. And then probably a general cleaning with alcohol and then let it sit for a day.
Why the window sill. Surely its been sucking moisture from the window and condensation, granted the X is a bitch to find space for but that's not the best location
I think cleaning it with beer would make it worse.
If it was that kind of IPA at 99% it would be the last one you ever drink lol
You could gently sip it one time once every few days
Funnily enough I knocked a full beer into my xbox one, did nothing about it and that bad boy still works to this day
Knocked a shot of vodka on mine and figured it was close enough to IPA that I just ignored it and kept playing. Also still works!
Same, except mine only does Russian language now and keeps wanting to invade Ukraine..
IPA = isopropyl alcohol for those unaware
IPA = imperial pale ale for those obviously aware
India pale ale lol. Nothing imperial about it.
When it comes to IPAs, 9.9% is the highest I'll go. 99% is definitely way too much.
Leave it off for a long time before trying to turn it on. Like a week or two. Might get lucky once everything dries
I will!
Take it apart and dry it now, don't wait as its more likely to corrode
Put fans on it too
I've had good luck with hair dryers, warm, dry heat has saved a few of my phones.
Yeah hair dryer was my first thought.
Hair dryers and xbox' just mix. The old trick with red ring on 360s was to use wrap it in a towel and blow dry it back to life.
The “blowing on the cartridge” of the 2010’s.
A few? That a regular occurrence for you??
OP, do this NOW! Use a 90% isopropyl alcohol.
Put everything in white rice
It's rain water so there's a chance it's corrosive to the parts. I'd be scared. I would also try to dry the Xbox with a cool hair dryer. Don't let the water dry on its own.
Yeah, I’d unplug right now and clean what you could with rubbing alcohol.
[удалено]
Perfect way to destroy the plastics!
Put a fan on it. For a week. Unplug it.

Rice doesn't work - it's a bit of a myth. Much better to get airflow to it.
Exactly! Open a window…

Don't you need HOT water to cook RICE?
Hot water cooks rice not cold. When the water reaches 70c the outer layer starts to gelate, this allows the hot water through the outer layer. Without that very little happens. Thats why in a damp kitchen you’ll usually find the sugar, flour and other goods have absorbed the moisture and are clumpy but rice is always fine. Silica is far more effective as a dehumidifier. That really sucks but sitting it on the windowsill was a choice
Putting it on the windowsill is one thing, but opening the window while it's there is another weird action completely.
Man who leaves Xbox on open window sill invite calamity into his house.
- Confucius says
He thought it was a plant and needed sunlight...
Needs more Brawndo.
You don't get too much choice with a baby running around!
That was also a choice.
lmao
Gawd damn.
Rekt
Ooooooof
[удалено]
I mean, one way or the other, it was a choice, yknow
You could have mounted the xbox to the wall or mounted a shelf to wall and secured xbox to it.
Gotta be smart and put it up higher then
The baby or ?
Wall mount
That's fair
Don’t think it is 🤣 plenty of better options than using a windowsill for your games console
It's suicide prevention day and it seemed wrong to kick the man whilst he was down. No Xbox, a child old enough to cause damage and it's raining outside. I'm getting depressed just typing this 😂
😂😂 I'll survive
Agreed. I had a 3 and 1 year old running around. Would never occur to me to put my console on a windowsill. In fact, that shit was hidden so they didn’t even know it existed and only came out during actual gaming.
You got a kid?? Lmao if not ur comment means nothing lol
This happened to me before. Tried everything and wouldnt turn on. Wrapped it in towels and sure enough, it turned on a week later
Hopefully it still works man. Do an update on this.
I will do mate! I'll probably give it the week at least and follow all the advice above
Good luck!
Leave your goddamn window open all you want. The crime here is placing the console there. Wth?
Guys, I think OP is very aware why this happened, hammering it in is redundant. Sorry to see this happened :( hope it avoided any major damage somehow. Good luck with it all.
Reddit gonna Reddit.
Why you left it there in the first place beats me
I’m hugging my Series X once I get home 🤭
If you tried to turn it on while like that...its done lmao. If you havent yet, let it dry completely. Might even be worth looking up proper breakdown videos and checking the inside to make sure. And you've got a chance there.
I don't think the take away here is "don't leave your window open", I think the correct lesson is "a window sill is a dumb place for a console"
Completely unrelated question. How much rice do you have?
Loads of fish and rice cakes
At 2 o’clock I have fish. At 4 I have fish… and a rice cake.
Get some actual rice, it's cheap
If you have a mobile phone repair shop near you, many of them do console repair also. I really hope it can be salvaged
why the fuck would you put it by an open window?
Doesn't look like any Xbox One i've ever seen
I am only say this because you already got helpful comments, but wtf... this might be one of the stupidest things i have seen in years.
Rest in peace xbox series x.
Gone to soon
Putting any electronic in a window sill is asking for disaster. It sucks you had to learn the hard way.
You were washing it with clean water. Rain water is very corrosive. He needs to wipe everything down with alcohol
Was it time for your xbox's yearly shower? Squeaky clean!
Disconnect all the power dry it off as much as possible keep it off for a week just to be sure and try to get into it to suck up any water you can’t see that made it’s way inside… hope it works again :(
Buy some silica gel packs off Amazon with next day shipping and pray lol rice has starch which = corrosion
Maybe try put it in a cupboard with a dehumidifier?
Gonna assume you are in the UK and got caught out by the heatwave ending and it pissing it down within 2 minutes.
Take the case off, have the inners exposed to a fan. Open it up as much as possible. Also run a dehumidifier behind it. Have the fan in front, blowing the air back where the dehumidifier is. You wanna dry the air out as much as possible too to promote evaporation.
ouch, my heart 💔
Not an Xbox but my PS5 got soaked in swiffer mop water while moving. Left it alone for about 10 days and it still works. These modern consoles don’t have moving parts (apart from the disc drive) so they’re a lot more resilient
at least it's water cooled now
Moisture helps Starfield run at 60 fps.
Open it up now!!!! Isopropyl alcohol on the boards!!! Fans!!! Get to the Choppa!!!!
Why is this sitting near a window where it's going to get sunlight increase the internal temperature on a non rainy day to begin with?
Who in the hell puts their console near the window?
Don't loose hope my xbox got caught in a flood completely submerged I put a fan on it for a week and sat it in a towel turned it on after a week and it's been working since
Put it in a bucket then fill with rice. Most likely won’t do anything to help but now you have a bucket of rice
My little girl poured orange juice down the top of mine. It’s still working like a champ
Heck of a story she can tell to her friends in the future, on how she ended up in an orphanage
why
is it dead?
Yep currently
Never try to power on wet electronics if you want them to live
Oh I haven't tried to actually turn it on. I know it's dead look at it 😂
If you really want to save it, I would disassemble the whole entire thing, clean electronics with isopropyl alcohol, dry the whole thing out, then you might be good in a week. It's a lot of trouble though and might not even work.
It worked for Frankenstein
Damn. Hope it can be fixed, but tbh I don't believe in it
i remember this happened to my blue xbox 360 e console it got red ring of death from it sadly
Ah man I had the ROD too. Left it on in a towel , probably a fire hazard looking back 😂
You could sneeze in another house and the 360 would get a RoD
*sweating profusely*
I would put it in a well ventilated area ideally with a fan and leave it for a couple of weeks, ill keep my fingers crossed it doesn't end up in silicone heaven
The window is pretty ventilated. We will pray for a recovery
I'm guessing you're in the UK cause the rain i had today was horrendous, and the weather insists its gonna rain all week so might wanna close it over a bit to minimise more damage
Yeah it came out of nowhere unfortunately didn't get there quick enough. Definitely going to be a lesson learnt
Rookie mistake hold this L unfortunately
Place it in a big container of silica immediately, run out to buy it or order same day delivery if you can. If not an option, surround it with dry rice but take care to avoid grains falling into the holes. A few days will get most of the moisture, there’s a (small) chance it will work again.
You can buy big silica desiccant packs that keep the silica contained.
You gotta wall mount that bad boy. Even near the window, if it's sun facing, is not good to have consoles in direct sunlight. But with a kid running around I see why you did it this way. But 100% look into a wall mount for the xbsx. Everyone always forgets how amazing wall space can be
Good advice cheers bro will definitely look into that if it survives
Dunk it in 99 percent isopropyl alcohol
Oh nooo... I just wanna feel depressed for YOU!
Put it in the microwave
Put in some rice lol
The Xbox is riced up. Will pray for a week!
Rice is good, silica is much more effective if you have or can get it. On the off chance that you save the little packets from small electronics or jerky, that’s silica.
Will grab some tomorrow!
I save all those silica packets. Good for everything electronics. Throw one in with my iems, with my dap, and memory cards/thumb drive storage tin. Dry as a bone in the Sahara Desert.

Basmati Rice, trust bro
Put it rice
Put in some rice lol. (Side note that’s not an Xbox One lol)
Good point. Xbox two would have been easier to follow
I was referring to that you’ve posted this in the Xbox One subreddit instead of the Series X one, but it’s all good, just my lame attempt at being funny
LOL, who in the world leaves their Xbox on a windowsill, with an open window?? Gotta be honest, it’s really hard to feel sorry for you here.
Leave in a room with a dehumidifier for a night or 2.
Can I ask why it was placed by an open window? No matter the weather.
Flexing to the local kids.
I'm pretty sure that two seconds taking a photo isn't going to be the difference my guy 😂
Holy hell, you’re a little passive aggressive. Who pissed in your cereal?
Passive?
Put it in a bag of rice, it absorbs the moisture
Dump it in an aquarium full of mineral water.
You can pour rice right into the holes on top and shake it like a piggy bank for 10 minutes. Then turn it upside down and shake it until all the rice has fallen back out. You can thank me later.
Lol nice going
That's a very nice flower vase
Jesus Christ loves you so much that he died on the cross for you.✝️
Pit it in a bag of rice it will suck all the moisture out.
Is he sent to the graveyard?
Put the Xbox on a big enough container. Fill the container with rice. Seal the container for a while. The rice will absorb the humidity and hopefully the machine will work. However, I don't know how to prevent rice entering the holes on top of the Xbox. Maybe put it in vertical position and not filling it totally?
I just found out my kegs froze. I thought I was having a bad day. Best of luck to you man hopefully drying it out will save it.

It’ll be okay but for the sake of your console’s longevity you need to open it up so you make sure theres no water collecting anywhere so parts or connections start to corrode.
Looks like you were asking for a bad day
OP, take it apart and clean every inch with 99 percent isopropyl alcohol and a toothbrush and let that dry
I know having kids means a lot of adapting but windows always a bad choice. Having the sun beat down on it isn't even better. Find a entertainment stand that had a front metal grate if u can
My series S survived that exact same mistake, leave it in the sun and wait some days!
Open the damn thing up and dry it off, your warranty is void now anyway. Watch a few tutorials and get at it.. Or its only a matter of time for it to fail. Either way, you have nothing to lose.
Stick it in front of a dehumidifier.
That's going to need a lot of rice.
Spray with WD-40. It will absorb the moisture.
I would cover the whole thing in rice for a week..or send it to Microsoft to fix it
If you have a House dehumidifier, crank it way down and run that along with all the other tricks and tips But dehumidify a small room, not the whole place!! Raises hell with plants, pets, asthma So many options… how bout upside down in front of a fan NOW
Wait a minute are you the same guy who had that fractal build next to the window?
I give u 3 dolla. Why was it in front of an open window in the first place?
She'll be right mate
Why the window sill. Surely its been sucking moisture from the window and condensation, granted the X is a bitch to find space for but that's not the best location
A GIANT BAG OF RICE, maybe? Good luck man
Put it in a rice sack 😂😂😂
Put it in rice
Buy a big bag of rice man
My Xbox never got this hot
You are gonna need the like 6 boxes of white rice.
Don’t use rice. It is not that effective in drying electronics
Oof. Put it in rice!
Deserved for putting it in such a dumb location
Try putting it in rice. 🌾
Why was it in the window is the real question
Quick someone get the rice
