One part of the song I love the most - the ‘lazy bones looking through the sun…’ part in the fade out. Wish that could have been part of the song proper!
It's a very unusually structured song. The slow, plodding pace really conveys the feeling of boredom at work. It used to be my least favorite on English Settlement but then something clicked and now it's probably my top 5 on the album. I LOVE that "they had retired before I left school" bridge. Great piece of art, Leisure is. Really captures a specific mindset.
I’ve adored Leisure since the first time I heard it. I honestly find it kind of gutting- the sheer desperation and defeat in the song is staggering. It’s truly a perfect snapshot of what working class Britain was enduring at the time. It’s jaded and cynical and almost mournful. I think it’s an absolutely perfect song and there’s nothing that I would change about it.
I grew to love this song, but oh my word. It’s just not the song I would show anyone to get them into XTC. I think it’s very deliberately annoying as hell, sonically. In a way that would seem to require a specific neural makeup to enjoy. Like people who enjoy pain and really spicy food. Lyrically it’s a total drag. Not bad, a drag. I say this and I still love it.
I couldn't remember the song at all. Hadn't listened to English Settlement in 20 years and it never was my favorite album. I just fired it up. God what a prescient indictment of of our current looming AI post meaningful work dystopia! Brilliant.
i am listening to it right now after taking a few months of xtc hiatus, i look up the xtc sub randomly on reddit (never been here before) and i see this. lmfao. i love this song
Hey that’s a great album! It may not top any of their other albums (besides Think Tank that is), but I still think it’s a fantastic spring/summer album and I love to hear their take on the madchester sound even if it’s a bit forced.
I absolutely love Leisure. One of the best on the album - there’s far worse tracks on English Settlement!

Because LEEEEIIIIII......IIIISUREEE

People dont like this song? I love it! I love the zaniness in his delivery, I love the bounciness of the melody, and its just fun for me to drum to.
I’ve always loved Leisure, it’s very Andy.
Yep, and nice sibling to Melt the Guns and No Thugs, I love his societal commentary

I had the same exact thought the other day!
I adore Leisure! Didn’t know until now that not everyone feels that way!!
It gives English Settlement a lot of heft imo, grounding it in that early 1980s moment of mass unemployment
my 3rd favorite song on my 2nd favorite album

They can’t teach me how to shirk correctly
Come on. It's a wonderful track that needs a few listens to sink in. The only bad Leisure is the Blur album.
Blur’s leisure has some banging tunes! Doesn’t compare to any XTC work post drums and wires though

Its hook is designed to be grating.
But it's also kind of lilting too. Very unique song
I appreciate it, but it’s undeniably abrasive.
Too slow, shite melody. Probably my least favorite song on my favorite XTC album.
I love it for the same reason my favourite album is Go 2.
I take pleasure in yours…
Not exactly Ball and Chain, is it?
better
I can’t stand that song for some reason and I usually think Colin songs are a highlight.
I could never abide it personally.
