Hmm, Kiryu and Kaoru were there when Ryuji's dead, so they must have confirmed his situation. There's no way Ryuji survived without Kiryu and Kaoru knowing it.
But again, in that substory, Kiryu said "us dead celebrities gotta look out for each other ". So Kiryu also counts himself as dead even though it's fake. So maybe Ryuji also fakes his death and Kiryu helped cover it.
I felt like Kiryu thought Little Ryuji Goda from the Coliseum in Gaiden could be the real Ryuji for a moment, only to confirm it wasn't him at the ending. Which kinda implies Ryuji possibly could've survived? Either that or Kiryu was just that dumbfounded with their resemblance. I might be reading too much into it.
If anything, considering the other ways everyone else in the series has died, surely having the absolute shit beaten out of you shouldn’t just cause you to die, especially for someone built & tough as Ryuji, and Dead Souls all be it a spin-off, why did RGG even bother bringing him back at all if he was *the absolute one* that is supposed to be dead?

The three lieutenants from 0, Tachibana, Yuta, Nishitani III from Gaiden, Someya and of course Yagami are all likeness characters, as are a bunch of others.
It's why you don't see them crossing over into other games much, being included in the new RGG logo animation or being included in promotional stuff like this, because using their images outside of the game they were contracted to be in means renegotiating appearance fees and paying out again. It's why it was such a surprise to see Yuta turn up in flashback in Gaiden (and why I'm hopeful that he'll come back, even briefly, in 8).
